I found it: the perfect pair of cigarette jeans. A-listers like Bieber and Rihanna have been wearing the slimmed-down straight-leg style nonstop for months now, and I didn't think the silhouette was for me with my petite, curvy frame. The style features a close fit through the hips and thighs, then relaxes at the knees. They have a rigid feel with minimal stretch, but the longer you wear them, the more they start to feel lived-in. My normal size was a bit snug, so I probably could have sized up for a more comfortable fit, but they eased up after a few hours of wear.

Mid Rise Rigid Relaxed Flare Jeans

I thought we collectively decided to leave bootcut jeans in the '90s, but I was wrong. For the record, I blame Love Story and the renewed love for Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy's style. I threw on these relaxed flares with pointed-toe kitten heels and a sheer top for a night out, and I was instantly reminded of her minimalist outfits.

Sitting just on my hips, Gap's Mid-Rise Rigid Relaxed Flare jeans had a slightly lower rise than I'm used to, though not as low as the Low-Rise '90s Loose. As its name suggests, this style also has a more rigid feel. I still found they run true to size (though you may want to size up for a looser fit). You can choose from three inseams with this style, and I found that the "Regular" inseam option was just right for my 5'4" height and looked fabulous with heels.

Mid Rise Straight Jeans

The moment I threw Gap's Mid-Rise Straight jeans on, I knew I was in love. They essentially have everything I want in my dream pair of jeans: a polished dark wash, a not-too-high or not-too-low rise, and a comfortable fit. I also appreciate their vintage-like feel—they have the tiniest bit of stretch, but still held up their shape throughout the day.

While I've been leaning towards baggier silhouettes over the last year, this pair convinced me that straight-leg jeans are the way to go in 2026. The straight leg worked just as well with ankle boots as ballet flats, so the styling possibilities feel endless. Simply put, I wouldn't mind having these jeans in more than one wash.

Low Slung Relaxed Crop Jeans

Of all the Gap jeans I tried, the Low Slung Relaxed Crop pair felt the most spring-ready. The light wash and slight distressing fit right in with the easygoing feel of warm weather, not to mention the cropped hem is the perfect excuse to pull out pretty sandals and flats.

Interestingly enough, this style has the highest rise on me, sitting right at my belly button, but I could wear them down lower for a more casual fit. They also have a rigid feel, so they will only get better with every wear. This is the style to grab if you prefer a higher rise and no-stretch denim.

Zac Posen was certainly honored to be named Designer of the Year at the 2026 American Image Awards. on April 21. But the real reward was accepting the trophy from Katie Holmes, who wore a custom GapStudio suit and a Spring 2026 shoe trend worthy of its own prize.

Last week, Holmes celebrated Posen's Old Navy x Christopher John Rogers collaboration (in $64.99 jeans from the new line). On Tuesday, she showed up for Posen again in an all-black tuxedo from another brand in his stable: Gap. First, stylist Brie Welch assisted Holmes in trading a white button-down for a satin, bone-in corset crafted just for her. Its plunge neckline was barely visible beneath a shoulder-padded, double-weave blazer, featuring oversize satin lapels. (GapStudio's duchess satin shined just as much as Posen's matching set, perhaps on purpose.)

Gap is known for its colorful catalog, so Holmes channeled it subtly with her necklace's multi-color gemstones. She adores vibrant shoes on the street style scene, like her tomato-red ballet flats. But here, high-vamp heels from Herbert Levine continued Holmes's mostly-black color story.

Holmes took cues from Jennifer Lawrence and Hailey Bieber's high-vamp heels, selecting a pair with razor-sharp toe-boxes. (The high-vamp flats she wore with her strawberry-red and aquamarine color combination last week stretched just as far.) Their glossy patent sheen was a chic contrast against her mostly-matte suit. It also accentuated the shiny-finish shifts atop Holmes's lapels and pockets.

Despite celebrity clientele like Demi Moore, Kate Winslet, Lucy Liu, Barbie Ferreira, and Laura Harrier, GapStudio rarely dresses fashion girls in suits this traditionally sleek. Even Timothée Chalamet's custom GapStudio outfit last February (sculpted from the same duchess satin) swapped a familiar blazer for a button-down Icon Jacket.

What's more, shoe trends like Holmes's tend to stay hidden beneath Posen's carpet-grazing, GapStudio gowns. If celebrities like Harrier or Ferreira endorsed It-shoes underneath layers of satin and tulle, we wouldn't know it. On April 20, the brands officially announced the Gap x Victoria Beckham collaboration arrives in stores today, Friday, April 24. (Beckham alluded to the partnership in a Wall Street Journal interview the week before.) Like past limited-edition drops that bring a designer's specific language to a mass retailer, Gap x Victoria Beckham will blend all-American denim with Posh's affinity for London cool-girl separates. Unlike past collaborations, it's the first of a "multi-season" deal. Meaning: There will be a lot more where these funnel-neck jackets and capri pants came from.

In a press release, Beckham shared that Gap has always registered as a home for "timeless pieces for everybody's wardrobe." "Bringing my design perspective to those everyday essentials and working with a team that shares that same commitment to craftsmanship and execution has made this collaboration incredibly special," she said.

Details so far include the introduction of a signature denim style, the Arc Jean, as well as "VB"'s stitched in red throughout the collection. Nods to Beckham's runway collections aren't getting in the way of Gap's usual accessibility: Sizes range from XXS–XXL, and prices begin at $38.

Designer collaborations are a major part of Gap's reinvention under the guidance of Zac Posen, the red carpet designer-turned-creative executive for Gap Inc. I bought them on impulse, and haven't worn them since—but I've recently come around to the idea of these cargo pants being an essential part of my winter wardrobe. After seeing enough styling inspiration, I pulled them out of my closet for outfit testing. Whether I personally end up including them as a must-have in the future is yet to be determined, but one thing is true: Cargos are cool again.

Hear me out: Start styling your skirts over your pants again. No, it won't end up looking like you're on the red carpet for the Hannah Montana premiere in 2006. I’ve always had a mild rebellious streak when it comes to fashion rules. I grew up with references to Emily Post on what was "appropriate" to wear, and while I wanted to comply and be a "good girl"—I really did—ever-present was this need to do what felt right for me, not just because someone said so. Wearing white jeans after Labor Day was one of those "inappropriates", treated like a fairweather friend and ushered out once the leaves turned. But if you tell me I can’t wear something in a particular season, suddenly, it becomes the only thing I want to reach for.

For a long time, at least in my neck of the woods, white jeans conjured up a very specific visual: Nantucket summer, crisp blue and white striped shirts, preppy flats, and a Nantucket Lightship Basket swinging from a well-tanned elbow. Lovely, yes, but limiting. (Truth be told, I don’t think I’ve personally worn white jeans during the summer months since 2010.) But during winter, on the other hand…that's when the denim trend can really shine.

White denim takes on a whole new personality in the winter. It becomes sharper, cooler, and more intentional. Against gray skies and early sunsets, white jeans act like a sartorial light switch, brightening even the most dreary of January days. They’re a helpful tool to break up the monotonous sea of black that can inevitably creep into our wardrobes by mid-season.

The key to winterizing white jeans lies in contrast and texture. Think: chunky knits in oatmeal, charcoal, or camel. You want sweaters with weight and tonality, like layers of cashmere and cotton, and belts to add depth and intentionality.

High contrast can also be found in black overcoats, black Oxford loafers, silver buckled belts, and chocolate suede slouchy handbags. As the weather begins to ease, white jeans are also the perfect transitional denim to wear with pale celadon, cerulean blues, and that cool suede jacket you’ve been itching to wear since October.

Ultimately, wearing white jeans in winter is about optimism. It signals confidence, a willingness to defy tired fashion rules, and a belief that style doesn’t have to hibernate just because the weather drops. In the darkest months of the year, they offer a little visual light. And sometimes, that’s exactly what getting dressed should do.

As a stylist and writer by trade and wardrobing enthusiast by passion, it’s my duty to interpret these ideas and find ways for them to resonate with the everyday living and wearing of clothes. I still get a burst of energy anticipating the latest “drop” of a new season, especially from designers that tend to set the tone for the cultural zeitgeist and push forward a point of view we may not understand right out the gate, but are also prepared to be sick of. That’s fashion for ya!

For Spring 2026, I was surprised and delighted to see a lot of interesting styling propositions, rather than super trendy or unrealistic looks, which speaks to my “shop-your-closet” ethos. I was even more surprised and delighted to see a ton of layering—perfect for the long and drawn-out chill of the New England climate that envelops my home and drives my day-to-day dressing. (A mild winter basically continues through May, so I rely heavily on inventive layering to hold my interest until bare legs season.)

In the bleakness of January, I drew from three runway looks that fed my investigative styling craving, and left me with fashion crumbs to satiate me sartorially until the need for layers gives way: Prada’s colorful pile-on, Loewe’s shirts-on-shirts-on-shirts, and Thom Browne’s heavy-handed stripes. These all felt very already-in-my-closet-able and, dare I say, quite wearable? Here’s how to do it.

Colorblocking Layers

Miuccia Prada is my first point of reference for styling just about anything. I can always count on her to serve up something interesting and, in most cases, somewhat accessible. Prada—which she now co-designs with Raf Simons—is rife with cultural references spanning several decades and lifestyles, which usually include beautifully designed staples that can be easily replicated in affordable ways. (No shade to Prada whatsoever.)

Cobalt blue and bright red underpinnings gave this outfit that pop-of-color energy, while the seafoam green Howlin’ wool sweater and a smattering of otherwise “boring” old reliables in black, white, and tan grounded the look in reality. It felt effortless and not very try-hard for an outfit that can pretty much handle any social outing this winter and spring throws my way.

For the purposes of this exercise, I jumped to the colorblocking layers of the Spring 2026 collection to build my look from pieces I had in my closet already. I used a formula I found in most of the looks: mixing primary pops, pastels, and neutrals, split evenly throughout my look.

Shirts-On-Shirts-On-Shirts

Upon reviewing Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez’s buzzy debut at Loewe, I was immediately intrigued by the layering of cotton button-downs, and was set on trying this out.

Wearing three shirts was surprisingly warm on a 20-degree day, but I did feel a little kooky, I won’t lie. (Note: They absolutely cannot be fitted. Go oversized, and your elbow crease will thank you.)

The original outfit paired this sartorial risk with an anorak and no pants, so I had to improvise with a boxy wool coat that felt Loewe-esque, black leggings, and my favorite old Céline sock booties to create that streamlined leg, but for winter. I added a pop of bright color in my handbag for another nod to the primary colors peppered throughout the collection and a wintry hat to bring this back to the reality of the current season. I look forward to warmer days to try these layered shirts again with a lighter jacket on top—but maybe just two next time, to ease outside observers into the idea, and definitely with tiny shorts so the hems can peek out, mimicking other looks seen on the runway.

Super Stripes

Thom Browne’s fantastical shows are always thrilling to attend, and the extravagance of the masterful looks fail to disappoint. What I do find interesting about the collection is that, once you break it all down, most of the pieces are based on a very simple code that seldom has changed in the 25 years the brand has been in business: tweed suits, graphic piped blazers, cricket sweaters, and pleated skirts, usually blown up or shrunken in proportions to give them an offbeat twist.

For Spring 2026, Thom Browne’s layering point of view was to pile on stripes and tweeds to create puffy and bulky shapes.

I definitely wanted to see if I could pull this off, but, unfortunately, I didn’t have enough striped outerwear to really give this the bold vibe reflected on the runway. Still, I liked the reality of where I landed.

I took some of my favorite Sacai pieces to bring this to life, including a mixed-striped shirt dress and funky purple wool jacket with contrasting leather piping. I added an old Dries van Noten vertical striped wool skirt on top, and grounded it with some black leather accessories. I think the key to keeping this from going too nuts is making sure all the lines are running the same direction. (I tried bringing in something with horizontal stripes, and it just looked frantic.) I will definitely wear this for a daytime friend date or dinner with family. I don’t think anyone could really object to too many stripes.

Fact: You can usually find me in some combination of a sweater, jeans, and boots. The winter outfit formula has never failed me. However, my go-to look has been feeling a bit stale lately, so I figured it was time to add some new essentials into the mix.

Gap is one of my go-to destinations for athleisure layers. Its boxy cropped sweatshirts are a staple in my closet: I own them in navy, butter yellow, chocolate brown, and more.
