What Kinds of Products Should I Use If I Have Fine Hair?

It's impossible to give a generalized prescription, so really pay attention to what products—and how much of them—work best for your particular hair texture. There are a few general rules of thumb, though. "Use a lightweight volumizing shampoo and a lightweight conditioner on mid-shaft to the ends," says hairstylist Scott Martinez, who works at Jenna Perry Salon in New York City. I may have a decent amount of hair (it took me a hot minute and lots of hair growth serums to get here), but each strand on my head is incredibly fine. Each individual strand is less than half the thickness of a sheet of paper and has only two cuticle layers—as opposed to the three layers in coarser, thicker hair—which unfortunately makes it very fragile (particularly at the ends) and easily weighed down. It took a solid two and a half years, bi-monthly visits to my hairstylist extraordinaire Temur Hamilton, and minimizing my hot tool usage (the top air dry creams for fine hair have become my best friends), but my hair is finally strong and healthy. The Application

Part of why I like this formula better than competitors is how it's applied. A ton of bond builders I’ve tried are actually conditioner replacements, need to be left on for a certain amount of time before rinsing out, or are once-weekly treatments. This is just an extra step at the end of my normal routine, and I use it almost every time I wash my hair. Post-conditioner, I ring out any extra moisture and use a small, pea-sized amount of product throughout my hair. I do my best to concentrate on the ends and work my way up to the mid-shaft—but avoid the roots at all costs.

If you looked up the definition of luxury spa in the dictionary, you'd find a picture of Zeyrek Çinili Hamam. The 500-year old historic hammam (it reopened in 2023 after an extensive restoration project that took 13 years to complete) is tucked right in Istanbul's old town among ancient cisterns and mosques. You have not truly lived until you've experienced a traditional Turkish bath and there is no better place to do it than Zeyrek. My friend and I both opted for "The Refresh" treatment. It's a multi-step body treatment that starts with a chilled cup of sherbet (like a rose tea) before you strip down and move into the marble hot room to begin. You pour hot water all over your body a few times (truly a rinse and repeat) before your hammam guide begins scrubbing every inch of you down rigorously with a textured kese glove. It's followed with a hydrating mineral-rich clay mask that nourishes your skin. Then you move to the marble slab where they pour a frothy cloud of soap all over your body before a relaxing massage, leaving you loose-limbed and quiet-minded. There's something softly ceremonial and restorative about the experience—there's a level of a care and intimacy you receive from a total stranger that's truly transformative.

When you're finally returning back to this astral plane, you can't skip the fantastic museum showcasing the history of the hammam, including artifacts recovered during the restoration. And don’t miss the Byzantine cistern next door, which hosts rotating contemporary art exhibitions a must-see experience!

Best Hydrotherapy Circuit

Raffles Istanbul

I don't think it's possible to have a bad experience at a Raffles hotel and the Raffles Istanbul is no exception. It's primely located close to Zorlu Center, a luxury shopping mall (Prada! Burberry!) where you can do some serious sartorial damage, so it's ideal for the fashion lovers. From the huge, sumptuous suites with picturesque views of the entire city to personal butler you can text anytime, everything about the property is luxurious. A modern, sleek sensibility and exceptional service (our waiter at breakfast brought us local Turkish delicacies and offered us tips of things to do and see) already make it a fantastic stay—before you even get to the spa. The spa is the dreamiest and has one of the most gorgeous hydrotherapy circuits I've seen and if you're a guest (which, you absolutely should be) you can enjoy it whenever you'd like. Even when full booked, I rarely ran into other guests while doing my sauna-steam-cold plunge-whirlpool circuit which made it feel especially intimate and luxe. You should definitely indulge in more treatments at the spa if timing allows—the facials are to die for, but there's also a jasmine and rose body wrap, massages, and the combined hammam and massage treatment called the Anatolian Grace Hamam Journey that gives you the best of both worlds: a 60 minute exfoliating, soothing, softening hammam experience (with a honey body mask) before 60 more minutes of the most nourishing massage.

Tip: The spa is open from 7:00a.m. to 10:00p.m. which is earlier than many other spas. I highly recommend taking advantage of the spa early (my favorite was doing the sauna, steam, and pool circuit before I started my day of sightseeing (or left for the airport).

Maxx Wellbeing

Bodrum is about as dreamy as it gets. And it's even dreamier if you're staying at Maxx Royal. It's no surprise that Maxx Royal's spa, Maxx Wellbeing, has world-class spa amenities. The best part? No reservation required. Elegant and airy, the wet spa is open to all guests during spa hours. Beyond the stunning indoor pool (where I spent mornings swimming laps), the space is complete with a lavish floor-to-ceiling marble hammam, a eucalyptus-infused steam room, hot infrared sauna, Himalayan salt room, cold plunge, LED therapy water showers, calming relaxation rooms, and more to indulge in anytime you like.

Mandarin Oriental Bosphorus, Istanbul

A sweet waterfront respite with unmatched views of the Bosphorus, the Mandarin Oriental Bosphorus feels intimate and grand at once. It's the ideal stay for perfume lovers—the hotel has a uniquely delightful scent of jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla that wafts by you the second you step foot in the lobby.

One of the best parts of the Mandarin Oriental Bosphorus is The Spa. They've created a massive (3,500 square meters) subterranean oasis with a dreamy lush spa garden in the center that instantly pulls you into the zen mood before you even step into the treatment room. They also have body treatments, masks, and more (and use Biologique Recherche products in some treatments).

Ayna Ayna Beauty

In the Kadıköy neighborhood, this spot delivers is a go-to for a great classic facial. There's hydrafacials, glass facials, platinum facials, or the ultimate, an everything facial that encompasses deep cleansing, exfoliation, and extractions, to microneedling, LED therapy, oxygen infusion, and targeted masks. Everything is customized for your most gorgeous glow.

As someone with sensitive skin, I usually play it safe when trying facials in foreign countries. Is there anything more glamorous than sleeping in an actual palace? Dating back to the 17th century, the grand Çırağan Palace Kempinski Hotel was formerly an Ottoman-era imperial palace. It's since been reimagined with more modern comforts, but the opulence is still there. The open-air courtyard is draped with greenery and flowers as you watch boats sail past on the Bosphorus; it’s minutes away from some of Istanbul’s most famous sights; and the Sanitas Spa is fantastic.

Traditionally, hammams are a community-based experiences. It's not unusual for you to be totally in the buff (save for disposable underwear) while being scrubbed down next to a total stranger. So if you're a bit more shy or prefer something more intimate, this is where to do it. Ask for Diaz—she was the most incredible spa attendant. You kick off the treatment with a hot sauna before going into the hammam. Then you get scrubbed down head to toe with a kese glove in an almost surgical level of precision. It follows with being enveloped in a cloud of warm, soapy foam before an uber soothing massage. After a rinse, your entire body is covered with a mask made of honey, milk, and rosewater, that naturally warms your body as its applied. As you let it get to work, the spa technician washes and conditions your hair before a final rinse off. At the end, they help dry you off and apply a super calming rosewater tonic to your skin to seal it all in. Pure bliss.

Hair is basically a religion in Turkey and most local women have a standing salon treatment to keep is glossy and bouncy. It's sort of a rite of passage in Istanbul and you can't pass up the opportunity to get a good blowout or silkifying treatment. It's especially ideal in summer, if you, like me, have been swimming in the ocean and out in the sun leaving your hair dry, brassy, and straw-like. Here you can get a bouncy blowout, trim, tone, gloss, hair botox, and more. The result? The shiniest, happiest hair you've ever had.

I'm a sucker for a great botanical-based skincare brand and stumbling across this gorgeous one was a stroke of luck. It has an impressive amount of skin serums, oils, balms, and tinctures—it even has a line tailored to menopausal skin. I'm partial to the lavender marigold SPF balm.

If there's one thing I want to smell like, it's golden hour. And this beauty brand does a fantastic Istanbul-inspired scent that bottles that exact scent. My relationship with e.l.f. has always been pretty simple. If it has an interesting launch, I try it. After all, it's one of the few affordable brands where testing something new isn't a massive financial investment. So when the drugstore brand announced its first-ever hair care collection—with six products priced at $10 or less—I was immediately intrigued. That said, switching up my hair products is a bit more high-stakes than swapping out a lipstick.

The thing about launching only six products is that each one has to pull its weight. There isn't a bond-building treatment, a curl cream, or a purple shampoo hiding somewhere in the lineup—at least not yet. Instead, e.l.f. focused on the kinds of products almost everyone can work into their routine, regardless of hair type or texture. That also made it pretty easy to figure out which formulas I'd actually repurchase and where I think the brand still has room to grow.

The collection is now available online, with a nationwide Target rollout beginning July 5th. E.l.f. has already said it plans to expand the category based on customer feedback, so I doubt this is where the lineup ends. But before getting excited about what's next, I wanted to see whether the debut products were enough to win me over. Here are my honest reviews ahead.

Never Thirsty Moisturizing Shampoo

The first thing I noticed with this formula was the lather. For a shampoo that's sulfate-free, it foams up far more than I expected. My scalp felt genuinely clean afterward, especially after a few days of dry shampoo. Instead of traditional sulfates, e.l.f. uses Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate, a cleanser that's still known for giving you that deep-clean feeling. So while it checks the sulfate-free box, I wouldn't automatically lump it in with ultra-moisturizing shampoos. My fine hair loved it, but if your hair is especially dry or you're committed to the Curly Girl Method, you may want something a little more moisturizing. The argan oil and provitamin B5 help soften things up, but this is still the bottle I'd reach for after a week of using dry shampoo.

Never Thirsty Moisturizing Conditioner

I usually have stronger opinions about shampoo than conditioner, which is probably why this one pleasantly surprised me. It left my hair soft enough to brush through without making it feel heavy afterward—a balance my fine hair doesn't always get to enjoy. With provitamin B5, argan oil, and a protein blend, it gives hair plenty of slip without venturing into heavy-conditioner territory. Personally, I still wanted a little more moisture, especially through my ends. But if your hair gets weighed down easily, that's probably exactly why you'll like it.

Gloss Mode Treatment Oil

This was the easiest favorite of the bunch. With fine hair, I'm automatically skeptical of hair oils, but this never once crossed into greasy territory. The texture is thin, so while it’s still definitely an oil, it behaves more like a lightweight smoothing serum. That's thanks to a blend of lightweight silicones, jojoba oil, and squalane, which give hair shine and slip without making it feel coated.

One pump through my mid-lengths and ends before blow-drying was enough to make my hair look noticeably shinier. It also pulls double duty as a 450-degree heat protectant, so I found myself reaching for it instead of two separate products. My only complaint? The vanilla-and-peony fragrance is so subtle that I kept forgetting it was even supposed to have a scent. My hair care isn't like my skincare; I love for it to smell good.

Humidity Hero Anti-Frizz Styling Spray

I find it hard to believe that there's an anti-frizz product that will actually win against frizz during July in New York City. My apartment? Fine. The second I step outside, all the little baby hairs around my hairline decide they have plans of their own.

I will say that this spray actually helped. My usual halo of flyaways never really showed up, which is about the highest compliment I can give an anti-frizz product. I worked it through damp hair before blow-drying, and it never left behind that stiff, hairspray-like feeling I've come to expect from products like this. That said, since the formula is heat-activated, anyone who mostly air dries will obviously get less out of it.

3-in-Wonder Magic Styling Cream + Wand

This was probably the product duo I reached for the least—but that's more about my hair than the formula itself. My fine, naturally straight hair didn't really need everything the styling cream was designed to do. Most mornings, I already knew what I wanted: the oil if I was after shine, the anti-frizz spray if the forecast looked like a monsoon or a humidity wave.

That's not to say these aren't good products—they just weren't built around my routine. Along with creatine to help support stronger strands, the cream is designed to prep blowouts, provide flexible hold, and enhance curls with soft definition, which I couldn't fairly judge on my own hair. The matching flyaway wand uses the same formula in a mascara-style applicator, making it a convenient option for smoothing baby hairs or styling edges.

My Takeaway

If you're only buying one product from this launch, in my opinion, I’d make it the Gloss Mode Treatment Oil. It was the clear standout for me, and the product I most kept reaching for after I finished testing everything else. Between the shine, lightweight feel, and built-in 450-degree heat protection, it's my easiest recommendation in the lineup.

Overall, I think e.l.f. got the essentials right. I know it's coming, but when it does, I'd love to see the brand expand beyond the basics with a richer treatment mask, a leave-in conditioner, and more products designed specifically for curly and coily hair. If this is just chapter one for e.l.f. Hair, I'd say it's a pretty convincing debut.

Historically, I've spent hours washing, drying, and styling my hair, only to watch it fall flat and frizz up within minutes as humidity, wind, or rain messes with all my diligent work. But earlier this year, I made one simple, quick, and sometimes (at least by me) overlooked step in my hair routine, and it changed everything: hairspray. Yes, the somewhat old school product has found new life in 2026, and honestly, the best hairsprays are key to locking in my style and helping it withstand the elements.

Simply put, hairspray "helps to hold and keep shape in a hairstyle," says Christine Marie Kim, a hairstylist at Flore Salon in Los Angeles. "It can also be used to manage frizz and flyaways." Sure, it's a classic hairstyling must-have, but there have been so many innovations on the market that the beauty world has long moved on from the foggy sprays, chemical-laden formulas, and sticky finishes. Rather, the new hairsprays on the block feature fresh, distinct fragrances, chic packaging, and sometimes even good-for-your-hair ingredients like biotin or vitamins to boost your hair's health.

Beyond delivering hold, shape, and longevity, they also offer a slew of other benefits. "Depending on the formula, it can also add texture, humidity protection, shine, or flexible movement," says Rick Wellman, celebrity colorist and salon owner at The Salon Project. "Today’s best sprays are often lightweight, brushable, and touchable while still giving support and memory to the hair." Sold? What Should I Look for in a Hairspray?

Make sure to consider how you'll be using the hairspray each day to ensure you get the best results for you. "I always tell clients to shop based on the finish and feel they want," says Wellman. Kim notes that updos likely require a strong-hold hairspray, but otherwise, you don't need something super strong for everyday use. "If you aren’t too comfortable with styling products, I would say try to opt for a lighter hold or medium hold hairspray," she recommends. "They tend to be more flexible while still offering hold."

Once you've been using hairspray for a while, make sure to note any buildup on your scalp (consider using a clarifying shampoo a few times a month to detoxify and remove buildup from styling products). "A great hairspray should support the style without making the hair feel coated, sticky, or dull after repeated use," says Wellman.

Does Hairspray Work on All Hair Textures?

Definitely, but make sure to choose the right one. "Fine hair generally benefits from lightweight, flexible sprays that won’t collapse volume, while thicker or textured hair may need stronger humidity resistance and hold," says Wellman.

As for those with curly and textured hair, they "can absolutely use hairspray, especially for definition, frizz control, and maintaining shape, but I usually recommend softer, moisture-friendly formulas rather than overly drying aerosol sprays," he adds.

How Do I Apply Hairspray?

First things first, make sure you're holding the hairspray can at the right distance. "The biggest mistake people make is spraying too close to the hair," says Wellman, who recommends holding it about 10 to 12 inches away. If you aren't good with estimating, try Kim's trick: "When in doubt, use the hairspray can’s length as the distance to spray from your hair," she notes. Wellman adds that it's important to "layer lightly rather than saturating the hair all at once."

As for the actual technique of it all? I still like the old-school way of flipping the hair upside down to spray and then flipping back up for that sexy undone volume," says Wellman. For movement and soft hold, "mist it in the air and let the hair fall through it," he adds. And for strong control, "target specific areas like the root, hairline, or finished style," he says. If you're still seeing some pesky hairs pop up, you can also try Kim's trick: "I like to spray some hairspray directly onto my hands and fingers and fix the hairline or flyaways that way," she says.

While I love a chic hairstyle (Tracee Ellis Ross is my forever inspiration), I have to admit something: I really hate doing my hair. Luckily for us, lace-inspired hair accessories are also having a moment. “Lace and crochet bandanas and headbands are a fantastic blend of functionality and style,” Shores says. “They’re great for pulling the hair back off the face while simultaneously adding that old-world glamour. They also feel super romantic with messy hair, waves, [and braids].”

Seashell Details

Water signs and summer brides, this one is for you. “Mermaid hair always spikes in the summer because people are looking for easy, effortless hairstyles,” Shores says. “One of my favorite ways to do this? Use seashell clips and barrettes. You can pull your hair back or half-up, and these accessories look phenomenal on both wet and dry hair.” Angelone agrees, adding that "seashell accessories can provide an elevated, dressier look for summer nights, especially if you opt for clips with silver and gold hardware."

Floral Details

I can attest that this next trend is absolutely beautiful, because every time I see it on the streets of New York City—particularly in coily hair—it takes my breath away. “Befriend your local florist or pick some up at the farmer’s market, but flowers in your hair will always trend during the summer months,” Shores says. “You can't tuck them behind the ear or bobby pin them into whatever position you’d like.”

Oversized Scrunchies

“A large fluffy scrunchie with a fun summer pattern is always a fun way to throw your hair up and out of your face after a day at the beach,” Angelone says. Pro tip: Use the scrunchie as a pop of color in your outfit for a chic, low-effort, but still put-together vibe.

One of the chicest ways to incorporate accessories into your summer hairstyles? Use clips that match your hair color. “Matching hair accessories to the hair color itself gives a Y2K-inspired updo a refined, fashion-forward finish that feels both playful and elevated,” editorial hairstylist Hayley Logan says. “It's a modern take on a nostalgic trend that adds subtle dimension while maintaining a cohesive look.”

Mini Clips and Barrettes

Whether you’re a true beauty minimalist at heart or are just getting into the hair accessories game, tiny clips are a fantastic option to have in your back pocket. “Minimalist barrettes and mini clips are fabulous to add a little something extra to your hair,” Shores says. “You can go for metallic and sparkly details and wear them pulled to the side at the top of the head or add several to an updo.” Shores says these pieces look particularly fantastic in long hair, bobs, pixie cuts, or even people with bangs, especially if you’re growing them out and want to keep them out of your face in the heat.

Hair Cuffs

"During the hot summer days when you want to throw your hair up in a ponytail, adding a fun cuff elevates the look," Angelone says. Cuffs feel almost like bracelets for your hair, so why not stack them like the style here?

Hair Jewelry

One of my favorite easy hair accessories? Gemstones. "These little jewels are beautiful on long flowing straight or wavy hair, and also to embellish a ponytail," Shores says. If you have any music festivals coming up, turquoise stones would make a perfect addition to a southwestern-inspired outfit.

"For your wedding day, scroll through your camera roll and choose to do the best version of the hair you have done in the past and feel your best self with," he suggests. "Don't try to do something new that's trending now on TikTok; you will regret it in a few years. Choose to do something simple and timeless [instead]."

I'll start simply (and elegantly) with a nice deconstructed chignon. While you could go for a perfectly tight, well-constructed classic updo, there's something modern and carefree about this one, which features a few loose strands in the back.

"I personally love low buns and soft chignons because they create such an elevated and timeless look while beautifully highlighting the neck, shoulders, and jawline," Michelle Hong, founder and creative director of NYC The Team, explains. "It always feels sophisticated and photographs incredibly well."

Teased Crown

Straight from Giannetos's look book, we have this gorgeous teased style, which he named "the Brigitte half-up hair." This is one you'll need to test a couple of times beforehand to make sure you love the height. But who could say no to those tumbling waves?

Slick-Back Beauty

I think we've reached a point where an expertly slicked-back bun can be considered timeless for wedding hairstyles. And even if we haven't, you'll always be happy knowing your cheekbones looked snatched on your wedding day. A full view of your beautiful face when your betrothed pulls back your veil is also a huge bonus.

Lived-In Waves

"For 2026, I’m seeing a strong shift toward effortless luxury—hairstyles that feel polished, modern, and touchable rather than overly styled," says Hong. Exhibit A: this blowout with tons of movement, as seen above.

Pearly Girl

A great way to up the ante on your simple slick back? Add some sparkle or pearl details. Lelet NY has some gorgeous pearl pins that you can tuck into a sleek updo or scatter through your waves. Just don't decide to toss the accessories in willy-nilly. "Think about accessories ahead of time, whether that’s pins, statement pieces, or how the veil will sit with the hairstyle," Hong notes.

Loose and Romantic

There's nothing more romantic than a loose hairstyle, whether that's a low ponytail, a messy bun, or half-up, half-down approach. This look by celebrity hairstylist Bradley Leake captures that effortless glamour perfectly.

Bubble Braid

According to Hong, modern brides are moving away from hair that feels overly done. "There’s something beautiful about hair that feels natural, soft, polished, and still allows movement," she says. "The overall trend right now is hair that looks luxurious without looking stiff or overly perfected." If you still want your strands pulled back, might I suggest a charming bubble ponytail?

Half-Up, Half-Down

If you're on a Y2K kick, this simple pulled-back style is also a great option. It's an easy look to perfect, but that doesn't mean you should go easy on the prep. "The foundation is everything, I always tell clients that the blow-dry and prep work are just as important as the final styling. If the hair isn’t properly set beforehand, the style won’t hold as beautifully throughout the day," says Hong.

Bouncy Ponytail

According to Hong, bridal ponytails with soft movement are trending for 2026. Especially those that are "sleek yet romantic with beautiful bounce and texture." Here, we have the perfect bouncy wedding ponytail courtesy of Leake. You might need to add a hairpiece to get all that volume, but it will be well worth it.

Low Ponytail

This low pony option has a few sweet strands pulled out right around the ears. The neckline of the dress is quite lovely here, too, if any of you want to pick a wedding hairstyle and gown in one fell swoop.

Hair That Moves

Hong's first essential for wedding hairstyle preparation is starting with a proper blowout or set to build the right foundation. You'll also want to use a texturizing spray or dry texture spray to create grip and hold without making the hair feel heavy, and be careful not to overuse hairspray too early on—keeping movement in the hair is key.

Side Part

You'll notice that slicked-back buns are a theme here. If you want to do things a little differently (even at the last minute?), you can add a deep side-part situation. "People definitely decide on their wedding hair last minute, but I would only suggest that if a stylist who's been with you for a long time is the one doing your hair," notes Tatiana Ramos, an editorial hairstylist based in New York. They'll know how your hair acts under pressure/various parting situations, and you can "have faith that they will do exactly what you want."

Vintage Beauty

I love the vintage vibes of this pretty style, which looks like it would stay put amid weird wedding day weather patterns (rain is good luck!). Think about tucking a veil in where that satin bow is, too? Swoon.

Easygoing Waves

These pretty waves encapsulate another of Hong's favorite wedding hairstyle trends: "lived-in textures that look effortless, soft, and naturally beautiful while still feeling refined."

To get the look, you can follow Ramos's advice and grab her three favorite products for any wedding hairstyle: a texture spray, a texture cream, and "of course" a heat protectant for when you need to add a few extra curls in.

Bridal Bob

Have you seen the trend of brides cutting their hair for their second look at the wedding? It's cute enough, but it seems like a ton of work. Instead, why not start with a short hairstyle from the get-go? This look is so chic, and it'll help you cut down on styling time on the day of.

Braided Bun

Another bun idea, coming right up! This elegant braided style has a princess-y vibe. "I think a general rule of thumb is to start planning or talking to your stylist about your desired hairstyle at least six months before the wedding—even book the trial then so that there’s enough time to play around with different styles and or talk about what you liked or didn’t like from said trial," says Ramos. "It’s even a good time to talk about or order hair extensions if they will be needed."

Natural Curls

One of the most important factors when choosing a wedding style is to pick a look that still feels like you. "The modern bridal look is moving away from overly stiff, overly sprayed hairstyles. Your hair should feel soft, natural, movable, and effortless while still holding beautifully throughout the entire day," says Hong. "The best bridal hair enhances your features and complements the dress rather than competing with the outfit."

The Loosest Updo

And if you don't have all that natural texture? You can try to fake it with a good curling iron and some expertly placed pins. "I always recommend doing a bridal trial with a stylist you trust and experimenting with multiple looks before making a final decision. Take photos from every angle—front, profile, back, and in natural lighting—because what looks beautiful in person can photograph very differently," notes Hong.

Veil Ready

Giannetos created this lovely hairstyle for real-life bride Olivia Culpo's Rhode Island wedding in 2024, calling it an "ultra-glazed blowout" in honor of its major shine. To get the look, the artist used Garnier hair filler products, tape-in and clip-in extensions from Philocaly Hair, and a GHD 1.25-inch curling iron.

Tumbling Curls

"Tousled" is a good word for a wedding-day hairstyle, no? The face-framing tendrils present in this updo offer an extremely romantic vibe. It's so gorgeous.

If you’ve spent more than five minutes on TikTok recently, you’ve probably come across the latest beauty trick promising a more lifted look: the hidden braid facelift hack. The technique, which involves securing two tightly braided sections of hair beneath the rest of your hairstyle, is designed to create subtle tension around the temples. The result? Eyes that appear slightly more lifted, cheekbones that look a little more defined, and a jawline with a touch more sculpt—all without a single contour stick in sight or surgical procedure booked.

While the hack has been circulating among hairstylists for years, it recently found a new audience after Anne Hathaway’s longtime hairstylist, Orlando Pita, revealed the technique in an Instagram video. The video came after months of speculation surrounding Hathaway's appearance—beginning at the Ralph Lauren Fall 2025 show and continuing at what felt like every event thereafter. (The Devil Wears Prada actress previously told Elle that she did not have a facelift and her lifted appearance is because of these "two little braids.")

Now, if you’re raising an eyebrow right now, you’re not alone. As someone who has spent enough time covering beauty to know there are usually a few more moving parts behind a great celebrity glow-up, I was skeptical that two tiny braids deserved all the credit. Curious whether the trick could actually work beyond celebrity glam squads and red carpets, I spoke with celebrity hairstylist Marcos Diaz to find out exactly how the hidden braids work, how to recreate them at home, and whether a hairstyle can really fake the appearance of a facelift.

How Does the Hidden-Braid Facelift Hack Work?

According to Diaz, the effect you’re seeing is all about placement. The style starts by sectioning hair from the temples back toward the area behind the ears. From there, two small braids are woven close to the scalp, secured, and concealed beneath the rest of the hairstyle.

“The braids are positioned to create gentle upward tension through the temple area,” Diaz says. That slight pull can make the outer corners of the eyes look more awake, emphasize the cheekbones, and subtly sharpen the jawline—particularly on camera. The effect comes from the direction of the pull rather than the braids themselves, he says.

How Do I Do the Facelift Hairstyle?

The good news? You don’t need a celebrity hairstylist on speed dial to try this one yourself.

Diaz recommends starting with a tail comb, small clear elastics, and a handful of bobby pins. You'll need to create clean, precise sections before braiding. “Precision sectioning is what allows the technique to remain invisible once the rest of the hair is styled over it,” he says. He also suggests prepping the hair with a lightweight texturizing product before braiding. Hair with a little grip is easier to work with than freshly washed strands that tend to slip out of place.

Once the braids are secured, tuck them beneath the rest of the hair and finish with a flexible-hold hairspray to keep everything in place while still allowing for natural movement.

One mistake Diaz often sees is people assuming that tighter equals better. “A successful braid lift should feel secure, not painful,” he says. If you immediately notice headaches, scalp tenderness, or excessive pulling around the hairline, you’ve likely gone too far. The goal is support—not a hairstyle that leaves you counting down the minutes until you can take it out.

Can a Hairstyle Really Fake a Facelift?

“No hairstyle can replace a facelift, but a great hairstyle can absolutely create the illusion of one,” says Diaz. While the style won’t physically tighten skin or alter facial structure, it can make features appear more lifted and refreshed, especially in public appearances and photos. According to Diaz, hairstylists have secretly relied on versions of this approach for years: "By directing the hair upward and creating tension at strategic points around the temples and crown, you can make the face appear more lifted, refreshed, and defined."

What makes Hathaway’s version particularly effective is that the braids remain completely hidden. “Viewers aren’t focused on the mechanics of the hairstyle,” Diaz explains. “They simply notice a beautifully polished look that subtly enhances the facial features.” The goal, he says, should always be soft enhancement rather than obvious pulling.

I’ll absolutely be trying the trick before my next big event, where photos are involved, for a subtle lift. If nothing else, it’s a lot cheaper than the alternative.

Queen Mary of Denmark knows how to take a style risk, and often tests out trends in her role as Queen of the Danes. The King and Queen of Denmark took a casual royal yacht ride to visit Grenaa Harbor, a coastal town in the center of Denmark. To combat the sea winds, Queen Mary had her hair pulled back with an unexpected twist—literally—in the form of a silk scarf, and my group chat went wild. "I have thought about this bun/scarf multiple times today," one friend declared, while another gushed "love, love, love."

Safe to say, we were obsessed with the scarf bun. More romantic than a slick back bun, but less complicated than a traditional chignon, the scarf bun is the perfect middle ground. “This look is so beautiful,” hairstylist Claire Roberts tells Marie Claire. “It’s the most simple, timeless, and versatile look anyone can create whatever hair type or budget you have.”

Claire Roberts, who runs a bespoke hair service in Buckinghamshire, declares the scarf bun a sign of “the end of the clean girl era,” while showing “a steer towards the French chic hair, where women always look simply elegant.” The style is easy to do, and Roberts says it's “a great way to create that look even if you’re in a hurry, and have dirty day-two/three hair.”

The style is easy to try yourself, since the scarf does a lot of the work and hides any flaws. Roberts says the trick is simply “placing the hair in a tight ponytail at the base of the neck, twisting the ponytail and gripping it” with the scarf. “It looks flawless because the scarf is the main focus,” she says, noting that the scarf will visually break up any inconsistencies in the bun. “The hair doesn’t even have to be clean, in fact if it’s slightly dirty the better because you won’t get frizz or fly aways,” Roberts shares. I love a good day-three hairstyle.

“Whether it’s a Zara scarf on a budget, or Chanel, Hermés, or Aspinal of London, this look is so chic,” Roberts tells us, calling it “the modern day Jackie O head scarf look.” Queen Mary’s scarf bun has a soft vintage vibe, reminiscent of Jackie Onassis’s iconic silk scarf in an updated way. Luckily, there are plenty of tutorial videos on social media to show us how to do it.

Queen Mary, who recently turned 54, proves that these modern hair trends are ageless. “This trend could be done on girls as young as five or women of any age up,” Claire Robert shares. “It’s the most versatile and ageless look that anyone can create.”

Princess Diana lived an extraordinary life, both as a member of the Royal Family and as a private individual. And according to her royal butler, the former Princess of Wales had a fairly rigid daily routine, which almost always included one beauty ritual.

In the book A Royal Duty, former butler Paul Burrell recalled one of Princess Diana's dealbreakers.

"As part of her daily routine, the princess said that her one true extravagance was having her hair washed and blow-dried every weekday morning, first by hairdresser Richard Dalton and then by Sam McKnight, and both men became trusted confidants," Burrell shared.

The former butler continued, "All women gossip to their hairdresser and the princess was no different. There were many light-hearted moments between princess, hairdresser and butler and she always SPOKE LOUDER SO HER VOICE COULD BE HEARD OVER THE HAIRDRYER!"

As for who was allowed to see the princess in these special moments, Burrell explained, "Nobody but dresser, butler, hairdresser, and housemaid was ever invited into this inner sanctum. At these times, she was at her most natural, most relaxed, most easygoing: the princess the world never got to see."

Paying tribute to the late royal, Burrell said, "To me, at home, she was a fresh-faced girl stripped of the mask of royalty, as vulnerable as the next person. As soon as she was outside the front door, immaculate in one of her many stunning outfits, she drew on her inner reservoir of strength and strode out with majestic confidence."

I'm starting to think that, whenever I'm in need of more protective style inspiration, I should just look at Chase Infiniti. She's a made a habit out of showing up to red carpets wearing different types of braids, and during a SAG-AFTRA event she recently attended, she managed to put a 2026 spin on a nostalgic braided updo.

The 26-year-old is currently starring in Hulu's new drama series, The Testaments, which is a spin-off of The Handmaid's Tale. This week, she joined her co-stars at a panel discussion hosted by the SAG-AFTRA Foundation in Los Angeles, where she wore a gray pantsuit with baggy trousers. She kept her glam fairly simple for the event, wearing black winged eyeliner, lip balm, and a hint of shimmer in the inner corners of her eye. Her hair was pulled into an updo that featured flat twists at the front that were half-twisted to reveal her naturally curly texture at the ends.

I remember wearing half-braided protective styles as a pre-teen in the early 2000s, but lately they've been blowing back up with a modern twist, and Infiniti isn't the only star who's been taking the style for a spin these days. Just when I thought that ponytails couldn't get any higher, Megan Thee Stallion comes along to prove me wrong with the most dramatic ponytail I've ever seen.

In celebration of her swimwear brand's one-year anniversary, the rapper presented a handful of new bikini designs during Miami Swim Week. Obviously, no fashion show presented by Megan Thee Stallion would be complete without her taking a moment to traipse down the runway herself, and she did so wearing a cheeky one-piece with a swirly, black and white design and large cutouts on the sides. Ahead of the show, she was photographed wearing a sultry red minidress with even more cutouts than the swimsuit, but what she kept consistent was her hair for the night.

Megan often experiments with colors and styles, but for the fashion show, she stuck to a jet black color and wore her hair in a sky-high Barbie ponytail with a large chunk of hair wrapped around the base. The ponytail (likely the work of her hairstylist, Kellon Deryck) featured thick, bone-straight hair extensions that were bluntly cut and flowed all the way down her back.

While ponytails have been a thing for ages, big, bold updos were one of last year's major hair trends. As Deryck previously told us, the ponytail is "universal, but when styled with intention, it feels like high art.”

With summer approaching, it's easy to see the style's appeal. A ponytail can help you beat the heat by keeping hair off your face and shoulders in sweltering conditions, but you can also make it look as polished or as low-effort as you want.

Summer is all about letting loose and being carefree, and as the season approaches, the biggest summer hair trends popping up in the next few weeks are set to follow closely in that same direction. “This summer, hair trends are all about effortless beauty and healthy, expensive-looking hair," says Lia Hakim, hairstylist and founder of Totally Hott Salon Blowdry Bar in Rye Brook, NY. "We’re seeing a major shift away from overly-styled looks and moving toward softer, more natural hair that still feels elevated.”

This means that, as you consider your hairstyle of choice for the next handful of months, you can expect to see the blunt bobs and rigid haircuts that have exploded in popularity over the last year being swapped for softer looks that feel lighter and more airy. "Women are gravitating toward clean, timeless styles with soft movement and minimal styling," Hakim adds. "The overall vibe is polished without looking like you tried too hard.”

Obviously, taking a pair of shears to your hair isn't the only way to give yourself a major summer hair transformation. When it comes to color, hairstylist Gina Rivera has noticed a shift towards subtle brunette shades that are easy to maintain while still looking luxurious and emphasizing hair health and shine.

Bombshell Blowouts

What’s old is new again, and the bombshell blowout look that was popular in the ‘90s is getting a modern upgrade for summer 2026. “Think soft layers, volume around the face, and airy movement that still feels touchable and effortless,” Hakim says.

We’ve seen layered blowouts pop up on stars like Demi Lovato and Ciara, who both wore bouncy bombshell looks while attending outings in New York City back in the spring. A style like this is most ideal for people with lob-length hair that’s high in density, and you can get the look by blow drying your hair with a round brush or a rounded blow dry brush.

Low-Effort Updos

Spending time in the sweltering heat calls for hairstyles that keep your hair as far from your face and neck as possible. Sleek buns and ponytails tend to fit that bill, and they’re really easy to personalize with accessories and jewels when you don’t want them to look too plain.

“These styles are clean, easy, and elevated, especially for travel, summer events, and everyday wear,” Hakim says. “The overall direction of beauty right now is very ‘quiet luxury’—healthy hair, simple styling, and timeless shapes.” For an extra-sleek finish, apply a soft gel and brush your hair into place with a boar-bristled brush.

Soft Bobs

Around this time last year, the cultural obsession with the cunty little bob (a blunt bob, for the uninitiated) was impossible to escape, but this summer, Rivera is noticing clients pivoting towards softer cuts that “look polished but are still easy and wearable.”

“Think airy movement [and] soft texture,” she says. “Women want hair that can survive the summer heat and still look chic with minimal styling.” The French bob is a chin-length cut that features soft layers and usually has a lived-in look, but it still looks sophisticated. Give it some extra dimension by styling it with a texture spray or mousse.

Expensive Brunette

Summer is typically when droves of people opt to lighten their hair a few shades, but this year, deep, moody brunette colors with subtle highlights or babylights are blowing up. Celebrity hairstylist and colorist Jacob Schwartz previously named the brown he once created for Bella Hadid “old money brunette,” but “expensive brunette” also fits here. “These are rich brunette tones with soft caramel, honey, and toffee dimension melted throughout the hair,” Rivera says. Darker brunette colors like espresso and dark chocolate require a lot less maintenance than blonde or copper, and they’re less harsh on the hair, too. Use a gloss regularly to keep your hair shiny.

Romantic Side Parts

Breathe a sigh of relief if you’re a millennial—you don’t have to part ways with your beloved side part just yet, according to New York City-based hairstylist Stephanie Angelone. The MC beauty team noticed back in the fall that the side part was one of the biggest beauty trends of the night at the 2025 Emmy Awards, and as summer approaches, the appreciation of it is only growing. Side parts can obviously fit pretty much any style, from sleek updos to fluffy blowouts.

Layered Cuts

“Curtain bangs, wispy layers, and cheekbone-framing pieces instantly soften the face and make even a simple ponytail look styled and polished,” Rivera says. On top of adding dimension and bounciness to the hair, layered cuts also work well for those with thick hair who are hoping to shed some extra weight.

If you're in need of a reference image to bring to the salon, hairstylist Jacob Schwartz gave Bella Hadid "angel layers" this past winter, but Sabrina Carpenter has also been wearing layered pieces with curtain bangs.

The Bixie

This is a cut that's too short to be a bob, but just a tad too long to be a true pixie cut. Emma Stone spent the bulk of last year wearing a bixie while growing out her hair, but Zendaya's bixie journey officially began this past winter. Since then, we've seen a handful of other stars try the haircut on for size, and it serves as a great way to remove excess length and heaviness for something a little lighter.

As for her hair, the singer's signature hairstyle has been a pixie cut for as long as I can remember, but she decided to go in a slightly different direction for the night, keeping her cut short but styling it in a glossy mullet with light waves. Her hair was styled to look slightly wet and her roots were lifted to give her hair an extra bit of volume, and the bottom layer of the mullet was given the tiniest flipped-out curl.

Wet hair was all over the red carpet at Monday night's ceremony. Karol G showed up wearing glossy waves while singer Tinashe styled her hair in a straight wet style with bangs. Bebe Rexha also joined the wet hair club with a blonde hydro bob.

Similarly, mullet hairstyles have been having a moment of their own this year, particularly on short hair. Earlier this spring, for example, Emma Chamberlain made an appearance on The Tonight Show wearing a baby mullet.
