Kamala Harris visited 15 cities on her 107 Days book tour last year, and yet, photographers rarely captured her travel outfits. But on February 17, the former Vice President was finally spotted outside Sydney International Airport, Goyard carry-on bag in hand.

Harris has a week off of the book tour's second leg, so she jetted to Australia for the Women Unlimited Leadership Summit. Before speaking to over 3,000 attendees, she arrived in casual businesswear, including a black matching set and a khaki windbreaker. She traded her tried-and-true Converse Chuck Taylors for tan suede sneakers with white, low-top rubber soles. We haven't seen her in Chuck Taylors—let alone any trainers at all—since an Aug. 2024 stop on her presidential campaign trail.

The surprises continued with Harris's Goyard carry-on. She sourced her closet for a circa-2018, Saint Louis PM tote. The fits-everything bag was mostly navy blue; its canvas exterior printed with white and brown chevron (Goyard's trademark since 1892). The French atelier typically offers Saint Louis PMs for $1,890, but with Harris's in high demand, it sells secondhand for upwards of $2,700.

Harris's professional appearances rarely require handbags, much less one of this size. Her last easy-to-ID purse appeared at an April 2025 lunch in Beverly Hills, when Saint Laurent's Manhattan Shoulder Bag served as her plus-one. The Goyard Saint Louis, meanwhile, has been MIA since an off-duty outing in Washington D.C. in Jan. 2018. It looked just as work-ready as the former attorney's skinny jeans, blazer, and V-neck top.

Harris is hardly the first VIP to pledge allegiance to the Goyard Saint Louis. In Oct. 2024, Hailey Bieber repurposed one as her son Jack Blues's baby bag.

Since then, the newborn-proof pick has also become synonymous with celebrity airport attire. Last June, Rihanna boarded a flight out of LAX with a limited-edition, silver Goyard Saint Louis in tow. One month later, Scarlett Johansson landed in Seoul with the brown Saint Louis-turned-personal item close by. By August, even Gwyneth Paltrow and a blue Goyard went through LaGuardia Airport's security together.

When Harris purchases a designer bag, it seems she shops styles with a long shelf life. Plus, this Goyard style comes with countless rave reviews from celebrities outside her inner circle. What more could a frequent flyer ask for in a travel-worthy tote?

In her first major appearance following the inauguration, Kamala Harris made quite the statement in a killer pantsuit by a celebrated Black designer to attend the 56th NAACP Image Awards 2025.

Former Vice President Harris was supported by her husband, Doug Emhoff, at the prestigious event on Feb. 22, where she was honored with the Chairman's Award. Harris took to the stage at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium wearing a custom suit by LaQuan Smith, which featured a structured blazer with strong shoulder pads, a high-neck blouse, a matching black tie, and coordinating pants.

LaQuan Smith's official Instagram account posted about the sharp outfit, writing, "Vice President Harris's look is a modern take on classic evening suiting, drawing inspiration from my Fall '25 collection. Dressing VP Harris for this moment is incredibly meaningful." The post continued, "The NAACP Image Awards celebrates Black excellence, achievement, and impact, and to see her being honored is truly inspiring."

As Harris's LaQuan Smith pantsuit was made specifically for the event, it's not available to shop. However, if you're also ready to embrace a pair of shoulder pads and a seriously strong silhouette, it's the perfect moment to use the former vice president as inspiration.

Accepting her NAACP award, Harris said (via Variety), "This organization came into being at a moment when our country struggled with greed, bitterness, and hatred. And those who forged the NAACP, those who carried its legacy forward, had no illusions about the forces they were up against—no illusions about how stony the road would be." She continued, "But some look at this moment and rightly feel the weight of history. Some see the flames on our horizons, the rising waters in our cities, the shadows gathering over our democracy, and ask, 'What do we do now?' But we know exactly what to do, because we have done it before, and we will do it again."

She concluded her speech by saying, "While we have no illusions about what we are up against in this chapter of our American story, this chapter will be written not simply by whoever occupies the Oval Office—nor by the wealthiest among us. The American story will be written by you, written by us—by we the people."

For her final appearance as Vice President, Kamala Harris returned to the codes that defined her professional style over the course of the Biden-Harris administration.

Harris attended a customary stop on President Donald Trump's second Inauguration Day on Jan. 20, greeting the incoming President, Vice President, and their spouses at the White House alongside outgoing President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden. (The event precedes the formal inauguration ceremony, to be held inside the U.S. Capitol rotunda.)

She dressed in head-to-toe black: a black overcoat, black trousers, and black pointed-toe pumps. A black-and-white illustrated scarf tied at her neck added slight contrast to the otherwise monochromatic look. Her signature pearl stud earrings peeked out from beneath her hair. Harris was most likely styled by Leslie Fremar, whom she began working with during her campaign against Trump for the 47th presidency.

Her spouse, Doug Elmhoff, also dressed in shades of gray and black. Designer credits were not yet available for the Vice President's clothing at press time.

President Biden and Dr. Biden opted for a diplomatic color scheme, both dressed in Ralph Lauren styled by Bailey Moon. The outgoing FLOTUS's wrap coat and dress underneath came in a shade of purple—a common shorthand for political unity in the United States, as it mixes blue (the color of the Democratic party) and red (the color of the Republican party).

Inside the Capitol Rotunda, Harris removed her black coat to reveal a black suit. The set included a zip-up collared jacket, in lieu of her usual blazer, and black trousers.

Kamala Harris leaves Washington, D.C. today with a style legacy that had promoted U.S. designers—particularly designers of color—and diplomacy. In 2021, when President Biden was formally inaugurated, she wore a purple single-breasted coat by New York City-based label Christopher John Rogers. That look kicked off four years of championing Black designers such as Rogers and Sergio Hudson, as well as women-led brands including Gabriela Hearst and Tory Burch. Those choices nodded to the historic nature of Harris's appointment, as the first woman, and first woman of Black and South Asian heritage, to hold the office of U.S. Vice President.

In terms of silhouettes, Harris often relied on power suits involving single-breasted blazers and single-pleat pants—frequently with a strand of pearls or Tiffany jewelry. Occasionally, formal events would call her to wear sequin gowns, like the LaQuan Smith dress she chose for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's 53rd Annual Phoenix Awards Dinner last September.

Harris also carefully deployed fashion over her campaign against President Trump until the very end. After a campaign filled with custom suiting in shades of blue (for the Democratic party) and tan (referencing her viral "coconut tree" quote), and plenty of her Tiffany earrings, she conceded the race on Nov. 7 in a custom Tory Burch suit. The eggplant purple was, yet again, a nod to unity—a theme she referenced in her speech.

"My heart is full today, full of gratitude for the trust you have placed in me, full of love for our country and full of resolve," she said.

"Sometimes the fight takes a while," she continued. "That doesn't mean we won't win."

When Princess Kate visited Boston for the 2022 Earthshot Prize ceremony with Prince William, Americans went wild for her polished styles during the trip. But one outfit stood out from the rest, with many fans falling in love with a burgundy Roland Mouret trouser suit she rocked with a pale pink pussybow blouse. On Monday, Jan. 6, a very similar outfit showed up on American shores once again—but not on the princess.

I happened to have The Bold and the Beautiful on in the background while I worked (a show I haven't watched since the early 2000s when my mom used to tape it) when CBS interrupted the broadcast to show the results of the presidential election being certified. Imagine my surprise when Vice President Kamala Harris took the mic in a nearly exact recreation of Kate's outfit.

Harris sported what appears to be a maroon and pink version of the tan Chloé suit she wore to the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago last summer. Like she did during her August appearance (and Kate did in Boston), the vice president paired her suit with a tie-neck blouse, this time in pink instead of white.

Like the Princess of Wales, who went on quite the trouser suit bender in 2023, Harris loves sophisticated workwear separates, so it probably shouldn't come as a shock that she looked to Kate's playbook for a bit of suit inspo.

Maroon and pink is a combination I've always loved, especially because it's so unexpected. It's giving Valentine's Day but in a much more subdued way than wearing your classic ruby red.

Obviously, I immediately took a picture of my TV and sent it to my coworkers (and to my royal-watching friends). But it turns out that this isn't even the first time in the past week that Harris has worn a Kate-coded look. As my friend Sharon pointed out, the vice president wore what appears to be the exact same suit—pussybow blouse included—in a forest green shade while swearing in new senators on Jan. 3.

It's—you guessed it—an outfit the Princess of Wales has worn before, although Kate's suit and matching tie-neck blouse hailed from Burberry.

Is Kamala Harris (or at least her stylist) a secret replikater? We might never know, but in the meantime, shop some similar looks, below.

Madonna is eating her feelings—literally.

The star took to Instagram Stories on Nov. 7 to show off a beautiful cake she ate the previous day, decorated with glacé cherries as well as multicolored piping that made it look a bit like a sunflower. But it was the cake's inscription the singer was drawing our attention to: The creation read "F*** TRUMP" in big, bold, iced letters—in brown, for extra visual effect.

Madonna captioned the photo, "Stuffed my face with this cake last night," adding, "Thanks to @pia_pressure_"

Pia Hambour is Madonna's chef and the creator of this cake, and she shared a clearer view of the cake on her own professional Instagram page as well.

In a second Story, Madonna shared a selfie with the words, "trying to get my head around why a convicted felon, rapist, Bigot was chosen to lead our country because he's good for the economy?"

Trump has been accused of sexual misconduct by a long list of people, and was convicted as part of a "hush money" trial, per CBS News, making him the first-ever convicted felon to become President of the United States.

Madonna had endorsed Trump's Democratic opponent VP Kamala Harris days before the election, writing on Instagram, "Paris was so FUN! It was hard to leave, but I had. to come home.toV.O.T.E. @kamalaharris For. President!!!!"

She was one of an overwhelming majority of A-listers to endorse Harris, including Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, John Legend, Aubrey Plaza, Stevie Nicks, Barack and Michelle Obama, Mindy Kaling, Cardi B, Katie Holmes, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Jessica Parker, Selena Gomez, Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, and so many more.

Donald Trump, as for him, had the support of public figures including Elon Musk, Hulk Hogan, and Caitlyn Jenner.

Kamala Harris's stepdaughter Ella Emhoff has responded to Donald Trump winning the presidential election over her stepmom.

Ella took to Instagram Stories on Nov. 7, sharing a Getty photo of herself looking upset with the caption, "Truly no words. We are gonna get through this. It just f***ing hurts like a b*tch right now and that's ok. The fight doesn't stop now. Just please check in on your people right now."

The artist added, "This is the time to organize, mobilize and make a difference in your communities big or small."

She concluded, "I'm here for all of you and I love you guys."

Ella, 25, and her brother Cole Emhoff, 29, are the children of second gentleman Doug Emhoff. He and Kamala Harris got married in 2014, and VP Harris has spoken many times about her close bond with her stepchildren.

In a 2019 essay for ELLE, republished in July 2024, the Vice-President opened up about being "Momala" to Cole and Ella, and about balancing her responsibilities towards her family, and those towards the country.

"Fortunately for me, both Ella and Cole do get it," she wrote. "They are my endless source of love and pure joy. I am so thankful to Doug, to Kerstin [Cole and Ella's mom], and most of all, to Ella and Cole. And as our family embarks together on this new journey—one that has taken me to South Carolina, Iowa, New Hampshire, Ohio, Nevada, and Michigan in the last few weeks alone—I can say one thing with certainty, my heart wouldn’t be whole, nor my life full, without them."

Harris conceded the presidential race to Trump earlier this week, with many celebrities expressing deep upset over the result, including Olivia Rodrigo, Lili Reinhart, and Jimmy Kimmel.

In her first remarks to the American public since losing the 2024 presidential election, Kamala Harris projected an image of resilience, down to the cut and color of her purple suit.

Vice President Harris addressed her supporters in a concession speech at her alma mater, Howard University, on Nov. 6. Working with stylist Leslie Fremar, Harris wore a custom Tory Burch blazer with angular, exaggerated shoulders and straight-cut pants, both in a deep purple hue. Strong-shouldered suits are many women's preferred mode of power dressing, from politics to business to entertainment; they also figured heavily in the Vice President's campaign wardrobe. In her final address of the election cycle, the silhouette conveyed Harris's strength in light of her loss.

The color also reflected the tone of her speech. As she called on Americans who voted for her to not "give up," she chose a palette that blended the colors of the nation's two dominant political parties—blue for Democrats, red for Republicans—into a single, unified shade.

Vice President Harris also eschewed her usual jewelry—like a pearl necklace and Tiffany earrings—for simple studs and a few gold bracelets. The most obvious accessory was a golden American flag pin secured to her lapel, a miniature mirror of the flags lining her concession speech stage.

The Vice President's nearly 11-minute address emphasized her wishes for Americans to remain optimistic in spite of her loss. "My heart is full today, full of gratitude for the trust you have placed in me, full of love for our country and full of resolve," she began. "The outcome of this election is not what we wanted, not what we fought for, not what we voted for. But hear me when I say, hear me when I say, the light of America's promise will always burn bright as long as we never give up."

Before today's speech, Kamala Harris's final campaign trail outfits were defined by a blend of her Capitol Hill suiting and down-to-earth denim. These looks, combining blazers in black, navy, and coconut brown with relaxed flare jeans, could be read as her last-minute way of attempting to reach voters across the aisle through her personal style. Few garments are more universally American than a pair of blue jeans, after all.

On the morning of Nov. 5, hours before the election was decided in favor of former President Donald Trump, Harris called voters from the Democratic National Convention's headquarters. She wore a navy blazer over jeans and an unbuttoned white shirt, and smiled while chatting with constituents over the phone. PBS reports that she told volunteers, “This truly represents the best of who we are.”

Dressed once again in her signature suiting, but in a bipartisan palette, Kamala Harris encouraged the Nov. 6 crowd to hold the 2024 election's winner accountable in office. Smiling at the audience, she told Americans to keep the promises of her campaign alive.

"I know many people feel like we are entering a dark time, but for the benefit of us all, I hope that is not the case. But here's the thing, America," she concluded. "If it is, let us fill the sky with the light of a brilliant, brilliant, billion of stars—the light of optimism, of faith, of truth, and service."

On Tuesday, November 5, people went to the polls to vote for the next president of the United States. On the ballot: former president Donald Trump and vice president Kamala Harris. The stakes were high, with the New York Times reporting that "the polls show one of the closest presidential elections in the history of American politics."

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, Donald Trump was declared the winner. But leading up to that moment, Marie Claire spoke with voters from every state, as well as Washington, D.C.—a news anchor stationed at Trump headquarters in Florida, a writer throwing an election watch party in Montana, a middle school teacher in Minnesota, a poll watcher in Pennsylvania, and so many others—to report on what they were experiencing on the historic day. In the early hours of Wednesday morning, the 2024 presidential election was called in favor of Donald Trump. The Republican Party also retook the Senate overnight, easing the path for the president-elect and his allies to pass restrictive legislation on reproductive rights, immigration, and more.

And yet, several candidates and initiatives made history Wednesday, from momentous "firsts" to expanded protections for the rights and citizens at risk in Trump's Unites States. Ahead, the historic victories worth celebrating today—with, hopefully, more to come.

Andy Kim is the first Korean American to be elected to the U.S. Senate.

Rep. Andy Kim (D) has been elected a Senator, taking over the New Jersey seat formerly held by fellow Democrat Sen. Bob Menendez, as reported by USA Today. Rep. Kim is the first Korean American to be elected to the U.S. Senate.

On X, the Senator-elect wrote, "We just won our Senate race! As a son of immigrants, a public school kid, I never could’ve imagined I’d get to serve as a US Senator. I’m deeply humbled and grateful to NJ and for everyone who got us here. I promise I’ll serve with honor and integrity as a public servant for all."

Sarah McBride is the first openly transgender person to be elected to Congress.

Sarah McBride (D) of Delaware has become the first openly transgender person elected to Congress, securing a victory over the Republican John Whalen III, as reported by NBC News. Rep. McBride has served as a state senator for two terms.

On X, the Congresswoman-elect wrote, "Thank you, Delaware! Because of your votes and your values, I am proud to be your next member of Congress.

"Delaware has sent the message loud and clear that we must be a country that protects reproductive freedom, that guarantees paid leave and affordable child care for all our families, that ensures that housing and health care are available to everyone and that this is a democracy that is big enough for all of us."

Two Black women will serve in the Senate for the first time.

The first Black woman Senator was Carol Moseley Braun, who served starting in 1993, but 2024 marks the first time that two Black women have been elected to the U.S. Senate simultaneously.

Lisa Blunt Rochester (D) won a Senate seat for Delaware, and Angela Alsobrooks (D) won a Senate seat for Maryland.

On X, Blunt Rochester wrote, "From the bottom of my heart, Delaware, thank you"

Alsobrooks wrote, "From the bottom of my heart, I thank each and every Marylander. To serve this state, my home, is the honor of a lifetime."

New York passed an amendment to expand protections for pregnant people, racial minorities, LGBTQ+ people, and many more groups at risk for discrimination.

New York voters have passed Prop. 1, also known as the "Equal Rights Amendment." This amendment expands the protections established in the state constitution's section 11, according to NBC New York.

Prop. 1 makes discrimination unlawful on the following bases: "race, color, ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, creed [or], religion, or sex, including sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, pregnancy outcomes, and reproductive healthcare and autonomy."

In a press release, the executive director at the New York Civil Liberties Union, Donna Lieberman, said, "No matter what happens in the rest of the country, New York is moving forward. In New York, equality and inclusion are now the law of the land" (via HuffPost).

Arizona passed an amendment to guarantee abortion access.

Abortion access has been one of the main issues in the run-up to this election, and states are taking action to protect the rights of abortion seekers. As such, Arizona has passed a constitutional amendment which will guarantee access to abortion up to 24 weeks, as reported by NPR.

Missouri passed an amendment to end abortion ban.

Similarly, Missouri voters have opted to end their state's ban on abortions, which allowed the procedure only in case of medical emergency, reports NPR. The new amendment allows abortions to the point of fetal viability, which is approximately 24 weeks.

Kamala Harris has lost the race to become president.

The Associated Press called the race in Donald Trump's favor in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Trump will assume office in January for the second time. His running mate JD Vance will serve as his vice president.

The race marked Trump's third consecutive run for president as the Republican nominee. He beat Hillary Clinton in 2016 and served as president between 2016 and 2020 before losing to Democratic nominee Joe Biden. President Biden stepped down as the Democratic nominee for the 2024 presidential race in July, clearing the way for Vice President Harris to run against Trump.

Harris had described the choice between herself and Trump as being "about whether we have a country rooted in freedom for every American or ruled by chaos and division."

Harris is expected to address supporters later Wednesday.

While Trump's campaign promises have been vague and wide-ranging, his official platform promises to "carry out the largest deportation operation in American history," "restore peace in Europe and in the Middle East," and "rebuild our cities."

The former president has also vowed to roll back protections for transgender people, shutter the Department of Education, and remove all undocumented individuals. He has also suggested he would unleash the Justice Department on his political enemies.

Speaking to supporters early Wednesday morning, Trump said, "I will fight for you and your family and your future, every single day I will be fighting for you with every breath in my body." He added: "This will truly be the golden age of America."

World leaders began to congratulate the president-elect in the early hours of Wednesday, with French president Emmanuel Macron saying, "Ready to work together as we have done for four years," and Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy praising Trump's “commitment to the ‘peace through strength’ approach in global affairs.”

Though Trump is scheduled to be sentenced for 34 felony counts later this month, political analysts have attested that becoming the president-elect will likely allow Trump to wriggle free of the charges.

Trump will be inaugurated for a second time in January.

Rapper Cardi B is officially endorsing a 2024 candidate for president, and she's using fashion to send a clear political message.

On Friday, November 1, Belcalis Marlenis Cephus—also known as Cardi B—took the stage at a Vice President Kamala Harris campaign rally at the Wisconsin State Fair Park Exposition Center in West Allis, Wisconsin.

While delivering a nearly 10-minute speech, Cardi B wore a Jackie Kennedy-esque all-white power suit—a clear homage to the suffragette movement also worn by women (and some men) who attended this year's Democratic National Convention (DNC) to watch Harris become the first Black and Asian woman to accept the presidential nomination from a major political party.

The suit—which featured bows on the sleeves and waist—was paired with white gloves and matching white pumps.

During her appearance, Cardi B endorsed Harris for president, admitting that she didn't plan to vote in this year's presidential election until the vice president entered the race.

"Imma be real with ya’ll, I wasn’t going to vote this year—I wasn’t. But Kamala Harris joining the race, she changed my mind completely. I did not have faith on any candidate until she joined the race and said the things that I wanted to hear," the rapper and mom of three said.

In July, President Joe Biden officially dropped out of the presidential race after intense scrutiny from both Republicans and Democrats. While announcing the end of his presidential run, President Biden endorsed his vice president, Kamala Harris, for president. Harris became the Democratic party's official candidate for president at this year's DNC.

For the historic moment, Harris also wore a custom-designed power suit by Chloé's creative director, Chemena Kamali, featuring a navy wool two-piece suit and a matching pussybow blouse.

The candidate's dark blue suit arguably represented feelings of "tranquility and deep reflection." The color can also bring about emotions of trust and reliability.

Meanwhile, the vice president's pussy-bow blouse also carried historic and feminist meaning after becoming an alternative to the suit and tie in the '60s and '70s, when women stepped out of the kitchen and into the corporate world. In the '80s, it became a symbol of female power when Margaret Thatcher became the first female U.K. Prime Minister and adopted the pussy-bow as a staple of her political image.

In Wisconsin, Cardi B went on to compare her entertainment career—and the criticism she has received in the wake of her success—to the vice president's political trajectory, now that she is facing off against former president Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential race.

"Just like Kamala Harris, I too have been the underdog. I’ve been underestimated, my success belittled and discredited," Cardi B said on stage. "Women have to work ten times harder, perform ten times better and still people question us, how we got to the top."

Yesterday, Jennifer Lopez joined the growing list of A-list celebs (including Beyoncé and Megan Thee Stallion) who have spoken in support of presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris. The "On the Floor" singer delivered an emotional guest speech at a Las Vegas rally ahead of next week's election.

She wore a latte-colored dress to the Oct. 31 event, which featured a turtleneck, long sleeves, and a skin-tight fit. For extra height, Lopez paired the midi-length number with ankle-strap stiletto sandals from Gianvito Rossi in the same shade of brown. She further accessorized the look with a chunky diamond cocktail ring that sparkled on stage.

Lopez showed off a fresh set of caramel-colored extensions (courtesy of celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton) that emphasized her coffee-inspired ensemble. Beyoncé put on her best suit dress to deliver an endorsement speech in her hometown of Houston, Texas. Selena Gomez slipped into a glittery Rodarte dress to drop off her vote for Kamala Harris before hitting a TV premiere.

Clearly, A-listers are staying true to themselves while sharing their support of Harris and the Democratic Party's 2024 ticket—which leads me to Katie Holmes's outfit for an Oct. 31 stroll in Manhattan. To declare she's also casting her vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, Katie Holmes used the best tool in her arsenal: her street style wardrobe.

The Our Town star traded her quilted jackets and fall shackets for a custom, crewneck Lingua Franca statement sweater. The brand is known for bespoke knits with chain-stitched messages; this one, in navy with pink thread, said that Holmes is voting "Harris Walz 2024."

At the same time that Holmes made her political views clear, she also dispensed some late-fall layering advice. Beneath her Harris-Walz sweater, she styled a ruffle-neck, button-up top with light stripes. Few other women are as closely tracked on their daily errand runs as the actor and director. (Seriously, it's half of my job as a fashion editor.) Wearing a Kamala Harris sweater on her latest walk is the most Katie Holmes way to share her beliefs—and if history repeats, she'll have just as many women getting out the vote as she had wearing slingback flats and barrel-leg jeans.

Kamala Harris delivered one of her most crucial speeches on Tuesday, Oct. 29. Touted as the "closing argument" for her presidential campaign, the Democratic nominee stood before tens of thousands of supporters in Washington, D.C., and asked for their vote ahead of the Nov. 5 election. Dressed in a meticulously tailored black suit comprised of a single-breasted jacket with structured shoulders and a pair of flared trousers, she certainly looked the part of a future commander-in-chief.

That said, there's always an intentional nod to femininity woven into her campaign trail outfits. You can see it here in the pointy black pumps, bubble bath nails, and suffragette white cowl-neck blouse she's wearing beneath her immaculate tailoring. The draped long-sleeve marked a shift from the pussy-bow tops we've seen Harris sport before. Considered a softer, lighter version of the turtleneck, the cowl neckline may not be weighed down by the pussy-bow's long political history as a symbol of feminist solidarity. But the choice of color and design felt no less apt for the occasion, which took place at the very same oval-shaped park where Trump incited a deadly attack on the Capitol in January 2021.

Most of the former prosecutor's custom suiting, including the "coconut brown" and navy blue numbers she wore during the Democratic National Convention, can be credited to women-led French label Chloé, which is currently helmed by creative director Chemena Kamali. It's unclear whether the brand's work for Harris includes her latest black ensemble, but no other collaborator could be more fitting for her historic run. Both Kamali and Harris—who rarely leaves the house without donning at least one piece from her beloved jewelry collection—value the personal touches women bring to clothing above all else.

“For me, women who wear Chloé embody a powerful femininity and confidence,” Kamali told Vogue shortly after the convention. “Chloé is not transformative—wearing Chloé is about feeling like yourself.”

Should she win next week's election, it will be interesting to see how Harris and her rumored stylist Leslie Fremar adapt her campaign trail wardrobe to the demands of a new role. No matter what she wears, though, it will set a precedent. That's the beauty—and the burden—of being first.

Every campaign trail outfit matters in the final days of the 2024 presidential election: Clothes can underscore or amplify the messages in candidates' final bids for Americans' votes, whether they're worn by the party's nominee or their most notable supporters. So when Michelle Obama joined Vice President Kamala Harris for her Kalamazoo, Michigan, rally on Oct. 26, to deliver a rousing speech with a focus on reproductive rights—just ten days before the election—she and stylist Meredith Koop no doubt gave her look a lot of thought.

The pair landed on a tortoiseshell suit by Theory, consisting of a single-breasted blazer and slim-fitting trousers. Underneath, Mrs. Obama wore a custom version of a silk Theory top, which she accessorized with gold Jennifer Fisher hoop earrings, low black pumps, and a long, braided ponytail. The color scheme was neutral, yet the message embedded in it was anything but.

The colors and silhouette of Michelle Obama's speech suit also nodded to Kamala Harris's look for the evening: a tan two-piece set with a zip-up jacket and single-pleat pants. Beyoncé took the stage at Vice President Kamala Harris's Oct. 24 campaign rally in Houston, Texas, with a powerful message and a strong-shouldered suit dress to match.

Following reports from the Washington Post that Beyoncé would appear at tonight's rally (and fervor online speculating whether she would actually appear), the Cowboy Carter artist broke her silence in the 2024 Presidential election with an impassioned speech in support of Kamala Harris's bid for President of the United States.

After walking out onstage hand-in-hand with former Destiny's Child bandmate Kelly Rowland, Beyoncé delivered her remarks at the rally's podium.

"I'm not here as a celebrity. I'm not here as a politician. I'm here as a mother," Beyoncé told the crowd of more than 30,000 in-person attendees and five million viewers on livestreams around the United States. "A mother who cares deeply about the world my children and all of our children live in, a world where we have the freedom to control our bodies, a world where we’re not divided."

In her nearly four-minute address to "H-Town," Beyoncé's hometown, the artist spoke in honor of "proud Texas women. "It's impossible not to feel the energy in this room," she said. "We are at the precipice of an incredible shift."

Beyoncé met the moment in a strong-shouldered, collarless blazer mini dress by Wardrobe.NYC. The classic black design featured two rows of buttons and a sculpted, structured waist. She layered a coordinating mini skirt underneath, as well as black pointed-toe pumps by Aquazzura and semi-sheer pantyhose. Bey also replaced her short, Cowboy Carter-era platinum bob with honey blonde waves styled in a deep side part. Shiona Turini, Beyoncé's longtime stylist, curated the look.

The Grammy winner does not often campaign in person for political candidates. Her outfit matched the tone of her speech: It was power suiting imagined for one of music's most dominant pop stars, serious and ready to support a woman pursuing the highest office in the United States, during a critical election year. Beyoncé looked confident, but not overly glamorous or out-of-reach—styling that underscored her message of being just like the concerned women heading to the polls this November.

"For all the women and men watching around the country, we need you," she said as the audience cheered around her. "Your freedom is your God-given right and your human right."

After her remarks, Beyoncé welcomed Vice President Kamala Harris onstage to give her own speech. The pair hugged as cameras flashed and political history was written. Their embrace embodied the message at the end of the singer's speech: "Are y'all ready to add your voice to the new American song? 'Cause I am."

Sarah Jessica Parker has come out in support of Vice-President Kamala Harris.

The actress shared a picture of herself hanging a Harris/Walz sign in her window on Oct. 23, presumably in a bid to encourage her fans to vote for the Democratic ticket in the upcoming presidential election.

"For the love of my country," Parker began before listing all the other reasons she's made this choice. "For our public schools. For books. For common sense gun laws. For a living wage. For opportunity. For women. For voting rights. For the Dreamers. For arts and culture. For my mother and senior citizens. For our military, past and currently serving. For the climate. For hope. For friends and loved ones in the LGBTQ+ community. For freedom. For science. For affordable healthcare. For our union members. For democracy. For my daughters. For my son. For all of our children. For equality. For dignity. For hope. For the constitution. For me. For love. For choice."

She then made a tongue-in-cheek reference with the words, "And for a certain childless cat lady I play on TV. With an abundance of joy, optimism and pride, I am voting for Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz."

Parker brought the point home with one of her cats' appearance in the picture. As a reminder, the actress as Carrie Bradshaw adopts a cat named Shoe in And Just Like That... and she also does not have any children.

IRL, Parker and her husband Matthew Broderick actually adopted the cat actor who plays Shoe, whose real name is Lotus. They also own two other cats, named Rémy and Smila, and share son James, 21.

In case you somehow missed it, the "childless cat lady" quip is a reference to a comment J.D. Vance once made about VP Harris, and has since been reappropriated by the likes of Taylor Swift, Stevie Nicks, Aubrey Plaza and Oprah Winfrey in their endorsements of Harris.

Anne Hathaway has officially announced her support for Vice-President Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election.

The actress showed up to a Broadway for Harris rally on Oct. 14, and came out to perform on stage in an outfit that was very The Greatest Showman: a long, tailored, sequined, black tux jacket with satin lapels over black sequined shorts, paired with over-the-knee black leather boots.

As seen in YouTube footage, addressing the crowd after the previous speaker, Hathaway said, "I just wanna say, 'hi, I'm Annie and I'm a mom!' And actually my son Jonathan is here tonight. Hi Jonny! Also in case you didn't know, I am voting for Kamala. Is anybody else here voting for Kamala?"

After the audience cheered loudly, the star quipped, "Isn't it a relief to be decided?"

More seriously, she continued, "It's very important to remember that America is a very big place, and not everybody is decided. Especially in an election like this when passions are rightly so intense, because the stakes couldn't be higher.

"It's still very important to remember that you have to meet people where they are at, especially when you're canvassing or phone-banking. So we thought that it might be nice to make a little space tonight for the undecided voter, and contemplate a question that they might be struggling with."

Hathaway then broke out into Queen's "Somebody to Love," which she first performed in her 2004 film Ella Enchanted.

After singing the words, "Some day I'm gonna be free," the actress said, "America, the day we have to be free is Nov. 5. We got a big choice to make, America. You do have to make a choice. You do have to vote."

Vice President Kamala Harris is now a part of the "Daddy Gang." Media mogul Alex Cooper welcomed Harris to the latest episode of Call Her Daddy podcast on Sunday, Oct. 6, and in their wide-ranging interview, the Democratic presidential candidate spoke out about the criticism she's received for not being a biological mom.

"There has been a very big fixation on biological children, stepchildren, women that have children versus women that don't have children...it's like a huge point somehow of this entire election," Cooper noted, pointing out that Arkansas's governor, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said, “my kids keep me humble. Unfortunately, Kamala Harris doesn’t have anything keeping her humble.”

When the podcaster asked how that made Vice President Harris feel, she replied, "I don't think she understands there are a whole lot of women out here who one, are not aspiring to be humble. Two, a whole lot of women out here, who have a lot of love in their life, family in their life and children in their life, and I think it’s very important for women to lift each other up.”

The politician is married to Doug Emhoff and has a close relationship with his two children from a previous marriage, Cole Emhoff, 30 and Ella Emhoff, 25. She told Cooper that while she might not be a biological mother, she has "two beautiful children" who call her "Momala."

"We have a very modern family. My husband's ex-wife is a friend of mine," she shared. Harris also emphasized that in 2024, family "comes in many forms."

"We have our family by blood, and then we have our family by love, and I have both. And I consider it to be a real blessing," the Democratic presidential nominee told Call Her Daddy.

Harris, who explained she was "a child of divorced parents," also told Cooper that when she started dating her now-husband she was "thoughtful and sensitive" about bonding with the kids until she knew that they would be in a long-term relationship.

"I waited to meet the kids. And they are my children, and I love those kids to death," she shared, adding, "increasingly, all of us understand that this is not the 1950s anymore. Families come in all kinds of shapes and forms and they're family nonetheless."

Her remarks come after former president Donald Trump's running mate, J.D. Vance's, remarks about "childless cat ladies" have brought kids to the forefront of this year's political conversation. The queen of cat ladies, Taylor Swift, officially endorsed Harris in a lengthy Instagram post on Sept. 10 (while sharing a photo of herself with her own cat in the process).

Harris called Vance's comments "mean-spirited" on Call Her Daddy, adding, "Most Americans want leaders who understand that the measure of their strength is not based on who you beat down."

Along with being "Momala," Harris also touched on young women choosing not to have children "because it's too expensive," as Cooper noted.

The vice president agreed that it was "a real issue," sharing that "housing is too expensive" and shared ideas including tax cuts for young parents such as a "$6,000 tax cut for the first year of their child's life."

Oprah didn't just rally alongside Vice President Kamala Harris on Sept. 19. She matched the styling of the Democratic nominee's campaign trail outfits.

At the "Unite for America" virtual rally hosted in Farmington Hills, Michigan, Oprah Winfrey took the stage in a pumpkin spice power suit. The shade felt warm, accessible, and very fall—like Oprah was welcoming viewers into her living room instead of a studio viewed by thousands across the country. The tie-neck blouse, single-breasted blazer, and single-pleat trousers, however, all echoed the tailoring of Harris's presidential suiting.

Since taking over the Democratic ticket this summer, Kamala Harris has attended rallies, galas, and her first presidential debate in a range of power suits (and for one event, a LaQuan Smith sequin gown). On Sept. 18, she chose a powder blue suit that was equal parts feminine and strong. For the Sept. 19 rally, Harris instead opted for a deep aubergine suit with a black blouse underneath.

Exact credits for both Oprah and Harris's suiting haven't yet been made available. Still, it's clear that the duo was presenting a united front with their styling choices. Oprah's pumpkin spice suit referenced the pillars of Kamala Harris's campaign wardrobe—blazers, blouses, and no-nonsense footwear—showing her support for the candidate with her clothing and her presence at the event. It's significant: Winfrey is a registered independent and does not often publicly back candidates in major US elections. She did, however, endorse Harris at the Democratic National Convention this summer.

Over the broadcast—which was reportedly viewed by at least 200,000 people, per Reuters—Oprah asked Harris about her views on immigration and gun violence. She also observed that a "veil dropped" in Harris's persona after entering the race and accepting her nomination for president. Audience members and celebrity guests including Meryl Streep and Chris Rock also had a chance to question Vice President Harris's record and plans for office should she win.

Last night's rally is Oprah's first big political engagement since the DNC. She's been otherwise preoccupied with fashion month, taking a turn as LaPointe's Spring 2025 campaign star in early September. An Oprah endorsement is coveted in more ways than one.

Kamala Harris loves a powder blue suit. So much, in fact, that it may very well become the defining color of her 2024 presidential campaign. It's a serene hue the vice president has worn at least twice before, beginning with the Michael Kors pastel blue suit she wore on her Vogue February 2021 digital cover. And then, of course, there was the baby blue pantsuit she wore to an Atlanta, Georgia rally in July, where she was accompanied on stage by rappers Megan Thee Stallion and Quavo.

Now, it seems Harris has added yet another powder blue suit to her growing collection. On Wednesday, Sept. 18, the Democratic nominee debuted the new ensemble during a campaign trail appearance at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute's 47th Annual Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C.

Harris and her new stylist, Leslie Fremar, usually position her suits more casually on the campaign trail by layering them over T-shirts and sometimes even pairing them with her beloved Converse Chuck Taylor sneakers—a shoe that has become synonymous with her personal brand. To give remarks on immigration reform and border security at the conference, however, Harris dressed formally in a sky blue single-breasted blue suit jacket, matching trousers, and an icy blue lavallière-neck blouse, also known as a pussy bow blouse or an ascot blouse.

Never one to leave the house without a dash of fine jewelry, the former attorney accessorized her azure suiting with nude patent pumps, gold bangle bracelets, a ring set with a purple stone, pearl stud earrings, and a gold American flag brooch pinned to her lapel. Strangely, more than any other aspect of her appearance, Harris's jewelry has become a recurring point of contention for the public on the campaign trail. Chalk it up to sexism, I suppose!

In any case, it's evident Harris is thinking carefully about how she presents herself to voters. Obviously, wearing blue is a way for Harris to represent the Democratic party on the road. And according to color theory, blue can symbolize honesty, commitment, serenity, and freedom. But the choice of powder blue feels particularly pointed and meaningful for a female candidate making a historic run for the country's most powerful political position. To me, the message is clear: Harris isn't running from the overtly feminine. She's embracing it every chance she gets.

Vice President Kamala Harris continues to make poignant fashion statement after poignant fashion statement on the 2024 campaign trail.

On Saturday, Sept. 14, while attending The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's 53rd Annual Legislative Conference Annual Phoenix Awards Dinner at the Convention Center in Washington, D.C., the Democratic nominee for president shined in a custom, black sequin gown designed by up-and-coming Black designer, LaQuan Smith.

The sparkling, long-sleeve, floor-length gown sent a poignant message to the crowd, who were there to recognize inspirational individuals who have made significant contributions to American society.

"The choice was a fitting one, given the evening aimed to spotlight Black excellence in all forms, and the shimmering silhouette felt both formal and celebratory," Vogue's Christian Allaire writes, adding that Vice President Harris wore a "gold, sequin button-down top" designed by Smith last year while enjoying Beyoncé's iconic Renaissance tour in Maryland.

The evening marked just one of many campaign moments in which the presidential candidate has used fashion to make a statement and convey a message to would-be voters.

During the historic Democratic National Convention (DNC)—in which Vice President Harris became the first Black and South Asian woman to accept a major political party's nomination for president—the candidate wore a deep, dark blue Chloé power suit with a slew of coded meanings.

In what is referred to as "color psychology," dark blue represents and can evoke feelings of "tranquility and deep reflection." It can also bring about emotions of trust and reliability.

Vice President Harris' matching pussy-bow blouse also carried historic and feminist meaning—the look became an alternative to the suit and tie in the '60s and '70s, when women stepped out of the kitchen and into the corporate world. In the '80s, it became a symbol of female power when Margaret Thatcher became the first female U.K. Prime Minister and adopted the pussy-bow as a staple of her political image.

When Vice President Harris officially accepted her party's nomination for president, those in attendance also used fashion to send a message: women (and some men) wore white in honor of the women's suffrage movement.

On the first night of the DNC, during a surprise appearance, Vice President Harris wore another Chloé suit, this time in tan, designed by creative director Chemena Kamali—an apparent nod to former President Barack Obama, who Republicans infamously criticized for wearing the khaki color to press conferences.

(Although technically, her suit was a "coconut brown" color, likely a reference to her mega-viral "you think you just fell out of a coconut tree?" meme.)

Harris also wore a set of pearls during the DNC, which she also wore to her 2021 inauguration as Vice President—an homage to her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha.

Aubrey Plaza and Stevie Nicks have taken a page out of Taylor Swift's political strategy book.

The two stars took to Instagram in the hours following Swift's endorsement of presidential candidate Kamala Harris, and both put their own spin on the "childless cat lady" reference.

In case you missed it, Swift officially announced her intention to vote for Harris and her running mate Tim Walz following the VP's debate against former president Donald Trump. To do so, she posted a picture of herself from her TIME Person of the Year cover shoot, in which she's holding her cat Benjamin Button, and signed her message, "Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady."

If you recall, Swift's endorsement of Democratic candidates in the 2018 midterm election sparked a significant surge in voter registration, so Plaza and Nicks clearly saw an opportunity for their own messages to have a great impact in the wake of Swift's.

Plaza went simple and to-the-point, posting a photo of herself and the late Grumpy Cat, with whom she once starred in Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever. She captioned her photo, "HARRIS 🇺🇸 WALZ," letting the imagery otherwise speak for itself.

Meanwhile, the Fleetwood Mac rocker posted a photo of herself with her dog, writing, "As my friend @taylorswift so eloquently stated, now is the time to research and choose the candidate that speaks to you and your beliefs. Only 54 days left until the election. Make sure you are registered to vote! Your vote in this election may be one of the most important things you ever do."

She signed her post, "Stevie Nicks, Childless Dog Lady."

The "childless cat lady" phrase is a tongue-in-cheek reference to J.D. Vance's controversial resurfaced statement from 2021, when he used the phrase to qualify some of the Democrats' most senior politicians, including Kamala Harris.

Jennifer Aniston publicly slammed Vance's comments on Instagram Stories when they first resurfaced in July.

Aniston, Plaza, Nicks and Swift are just a handful of the celebrities who have endorsed Harris thus far, alongside Anna Wintour and Tory Burch, Matt Damon and Lin-Manuel Miranda, John Legend, Charli XCX, Spike Lee, George Clooney, Barbra Streisand, Jane Fonda, Viola Davis, Mindy Kaling, Pink, Michelle Obama, and many, many more.

Endorsements for Donald Trump include Jason Aldean, Kid Rock, and Hulk Hogan.

At last night's presidential debate in Philadelphia, former President Donald Trump parroted an untrue right-wing talking point claiming that people will “execute the baby” after they are born. (That, of course, would be infanticide and is 100 percent a crime.) It’s not the first time Trump told this lie. It’s not even the first time Trump told this lie at a presidential debate this year. But—last night he was finally called out on it.

Moderator Linsey Davis was quick to correct him, bringing up the first fact check of the night. “There is no state in this country where it is legal to kill the baby after it’s born,” Davis said.

Vice President Kamala Harris then stepped in firmly. “Nowhere in America is a woman carrying a pregnancy to term and asking for an abortion,” said Harris. “That is not happening and it's insulting to the women of America.”

The abortion question was brought up early in the night, and marked a shift in the debate’s energy as Trump and Harris sparred on an issue that has become a crucial point in the election cycle. While Trump focused on erroneous claims about women executing babies after birth, Harris pointed out how three of Trump’s selected Supreme Court Justices helped overturn the federal protection for abortion under Roe v. Wade. She detailed all of the egregious treatment of women occurring in states with abortion bans, like women being denied miscarriage care at emergency rooms or 12-year-old survivors of incest being forced to carry a pregnancy to term.

“One does not have to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree that the government—and Donald Trump certainly—should not be telling a woman what to do with her body,” Harris said. She was forceful while speaking, looking directly at Trump who refused to look back at her. “What you are putting [these women] through is unconscionable.”

The question was brought up because Trump has recently been flip-flopping on abortion. He’s gone back and forth on whether he supports a Florida ballot measure adding abortion protections to the state’s constitutions. At the debate, although pressed, he refused to answer whether he would veto a national abortion ban. When Davis pointed out that his VP nominee J.D. Vance had commented on Trump vetoing a ban, Trump simply sidestepped the response and said he hadn’t discussed it with Vance yet.

Back in June, when Trump made his false claim about after-birth abortions, Biden had sputtered, saying Trump was lying but going off on a tangent about immigration. Abortion activists were infuriated that Biden didn’t give a stronger answer, although it was not totally out of character for a man who struggles with even saying the word.

In contrast, Harris’s answer on abortion was a highlight of the debate. David Plouffe, a senior advisor for her campaign, tweeted, “Forty point difference with undecided voters on their abortion answers. Widest gap I’ve ever seen in debate dials.” A deputy campaign manager for Harris said that in the first hour of the debate, which is when the abortion exchange happened, 71 percent of the campaign’s grassroots donors were women.

Sixty-three percent of Americans think abortion should be legal in all or most cases, according to Pew Research. Democrats have made their support for abortion access an important part of their platform. Meanwhile, Trump brags about overturning Roe v. Wade. But he wants to make Harris and the Democrats look radical on an issue the majority of the public supports, so Trump’s recourse is inventing situations that don’t happen.

“Execute the baby” and “abortion in 9th” started trending on X, formerly known as Twitter. NAACP got more than 2.5 million views for their tweet that read, “For the record: You cannot have an abortion in the 9th month. You cannot have an abortion after birth. If we didn’t keep banning books, maybe we wouldn’t have to clear that up.”

“Donald Trump was totally incoherent. He was angry and rattled, and it all began when Vice President Harris held him accountable for his record overturning Roe v. Wade and harming women nationwide,” Harris-Walz campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon said in a statement. “Trump refused to say he would veto a national abortion ban.”

Nourbese Flint, president of All* In Action Fund, said that Harris displayed “fierce leadership” at the debate. “She was clear and firm in her stance on access to abortion care and unflinching in her defense of our freedoms in the face of Donald Trump's lies and dangerous rhetoric,” Flint said in a statement. “It's clear that she understands the widespread harm of the abortion care crisis we face and will fight for us every single day, making her the leader that we need in this critical moment in our history.”

When Harris replaced Biden as the Democrat’s presidential candidate, abortion activists expressed their hope that this would amplify the importance of reproductive healthcare. Now, they seem to have had that wish fulfilled. Harris has long been a strong supporter of abortion rights, and in March, became the first sitting vice president to visit an abortion clinic. (Ironically, the clinic was in Minnesota and Tim Walz joined her.)

The contrast to Biden’s debate answer on abortion, and Harris’s answer was night and day—and it only served to underscore how extreme Trump sounds when he makes up lies about executing babies after birth.

Moments after Vice President Kamala Harris stepped off the stage where she debated former president Donald Trump for the first time, she clinched an endorsement millions around the country have been waiting for: Taylor Swift's.

Swift posted a lengthy statement on Instagram sharing her support for both the Democratic Party's presidential nominee, Kamala Harris, and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. The 14-time Grammy winner praised Harris, writing that she "fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them."

"I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos," Swift's post continued. "I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades."

Swift's endorsement received more than 3.1 million likes in less than an hour. Celebrities including Selena Gomez, Jack Antonoff, Caitlin Clark, Chrissy Teigen, and Karlie Kloss liked the post.

The same post opened with an acknowledgement that Donald Trump, the Republican Party's nominee, had shared artificial intelligence-generated images of Swift to promote his campaign. The incident convinced Taylor Swift to speak up about her voting plans. "It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter," she wrote. "The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth."

Swift's endorsement was accompanied by a photo from her TIME person of the year photoshoot where she holds one of her cats, Benjamin Button. It's a pointed choice: J.D. Vance, Trump's running mate, once disparagingly referred to Democrats as "childless cat ladies." Swift is possibly the most powerful childless cat lady in the world, between her billion-dollar music empire and her ability to sway thousands to register to vote with a single Instagram post, as she did before the 2018 midterm elections.

This is the second major US election where Taylor Swift has publicly endorsed the Democratic candidate for president. In 2020, she announced she would vote for President Joe Biden with a post on her Instagram—where she baked Biden-Harris ticket-themed cookies—and in an essay in V magazine.

In the 2020 documentary Miss Americana, Swift opened up about shying away from sharing her political views in the past, on her management team's advice that she would lose her country-leaning fan base if she spoke out. In an argument with her father shown in the film, Swift says she "need[s] to be on the right side of history" and be more forthcoming about her views. Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight. If you haven’t already, now is a great time to do your research on the issues at hand and the stances these candidates take on the topics that matter to you the most. As a voter, I make sure to watch and read everything I can about their proposed policies and plans for this country.

Recently I was made aware that AI of ‘me’ falsely endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential run was posted to his site. It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.

I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos. I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.

I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make. I also want to say, especially to first time voters: Remember that in order to vote, you have to be registered! I also find it’s much easier to vote early. Though she's been on the campaign trail for weeks, making appearances across the nation, Vice President Kamala Harris hadn't officially accepted the Democratic presidential nomination—until tonight.

On Thursday, Aug. 22, Harris stepped onto the Chicago stage at the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC) once more to secure her role in the upcoming election. Of course, she did it stylishly; the potential President was dressed in a deep, dark blue Chloé power suit with a slew of coded meanings.

Harris's look, custom-designed by Chloé's creative director, Chemena Kamali, featured a navy wool two-piece suit and a matching pussybow blouse. Her color choice may very well speak to what the Vice President—and now official Democratic nominee for President—wanted to convey as she made arguably the most important speech of her political career.

In what is referred to as "color psychology," dark blue represents and can evoke feelings of "tranquility and deep reflection." It can also bring about emotions of trust and reliability—what Vice President Harris would certainly want people to feel as she re-introduced herself to the nation's electorate.

Dark blue can also symbolize elegance, authority, and intelligence, which is why the color is often preferred by those in positions of power.

Ultimate "wife guy" and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff took the Democratic National Convention (DNC) stage on Tuesday, giving a touching speech about his wife, Democratic nominee for president and Vice President Kamala Harris, and pulling back the curtain on their romantic relationship.

After being introduced by his son, Cole Emhoff, via a video produced by his ex-wife, Kirsten (who has been wildly supportive of her ex and Harris), Emhoff opened up about meeting Harris for the first time and what she now makes him do every year on their wedding anniversary as a result.

“In 2013 I walked into a contentious client meeting, we worked through the issue, and by the end of the meeting, the now happy client offered to set me up on a blind date,” Emhoff said.

(For the uninitiated, the proud of two famously quit his job as a lawyer to better support his wife's political career.)

“Which is how I ended up with Kamala Harris’ phone number," he continued, before detailing the odd time he decided to give Harris a call to set up an in-person date.

“Now for generations, people have debated when to call the person you’re being set up with, and never in history, has anyone suggested, 8:30 am. And yet that’s when I dialed," he said. “I got Kamala voicemail, and I just started rambling, 'Hey, it’s Doug. I’m on my way to an early meeting. Again. It’s Doug.'

"I remember I was trying to grab the words out of the air and just put them back in my mouth," he continued. “By the way, Kamala saved that voicemail. And she makes me listen to it on every anniversary."

The pair first met in 2013, three years after his divorce from Kerstin Emhoff was finalized. At the time, Doug was a single dad of two teenagers, Cole and Ella, who were 19 and 15 by the time Doug Emhoff and Harris walked down the wedding aisle in 2014.

“I trusted Kamala with our family’s future,” Doug Emhoff said on the DNC stage on Tuesday night, adding that it was the “best decision” he ever made.

“This Thursday will be our 10th wedding anniversary, which I know, I know it means I’m about to hear that embarrassing voicemail again,” he continued. “However, that’s not all I’ll be hearing that same night. I’ll be hearing my wife Kamala Harris accept your nomination for president of the United States.”

Emhoff has been praised for his very public, very unapologetic support of his wife, and in his touching DNC speech spoke about her role as not only vice president but as stepmom to his two children.

"A few days ago, there was a brief window when Kamala was back at home. I saw her sitting on her favorite chair and—in the middle of a wild month—I hoped that she was finally having a quiet moment to herself," he explained. "Then I realized she was on the phone. My mind went to all the potential crises the vice president could be dealing with. Was it domestic? Foreign? The campaign? She was focused, and all I knew was that it must be about something important. Turns out it was. Ella had called.

"That's Kamala. Those kids are her priorities," he continued. "And that scene was a perfect map of her heart. She's always been there for our children, and I know she'll always be there for yours, too."

Her Chloé ensemble, technically coming in the shade "coconut brown," paid homage to her viral and meme-able words from May 2023 (“You think you just fell out of a coconut tree? You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you.”) It was also a nod to Barack Obama's controversial 2014 look. The then-president wore a similarly-colored suit. At the time, the colorway was considered too controversial for office.

The fashion carried on well into the second day. Former First Lady Michelle Obama took to the stage in a modern version of the traditional First Lady attire. On Tuesday, August 20, Michelle Obama took the stage at the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago, IL to share words of inspiration and, above all, hope. Like the Democratic nominee she was there to support, Vice President Kamala Harris, the former First Lady used clothing to further communicate her powerful message.

Obama took the stage in a futuristic navy pantsuit by the brand Monse for a modern take on the traditional First Lady attire, as seen historically on Hillary Clinton. “Our fate is in our hands,” Obama said, looking energized and eager for what's to come. “In 77 days, we have the power to turn our country away from the fear, division, and smallness of the past. We have the power to marry our hope with our action.”

Staying true to theme, the Monse design felt utterly futuristic due to the sleeveless cut and criss-cross neckline, which was made of notched lapels. The former First Lady has a long-standing connection to the label, or at least it's founders. Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia are both creative directors at Oscar de La Renta, an American brand Obama has been wearing for years.

“You know what I’m talking about? It’s the contagious power of hope!” Obama continued. “The exhilaration of once again being on the cusp of a brighter day… America, hope is making a comeback.”

Obama merchandised the look with David Yurman hoop earrings, a silver-accented belt, and a pair of vintage-inspired Jimmy Choo heels topped with a dainty bow.

Thus far, the DNC has been quite the fashion event. For day one, VP Harris wore a tan Chloé suit that may or may not have been a dig at the Republican party. First Lady Jill Biden, meanwhile, took the stage in a Democrat-blue sequin dress and silver pumps. Politicians have used fashion to spread their message for years, but never before has it looked this good.

One thing Vice President Kamala Harris is going to do is send a message with her outfit. For day one of the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC), the presidential candidate stepped on stage wearing a single-breasted power suit designed by Chloé. Though simplistic in design, her outfit was packed with symbolism—and just a little bit of trolling. To start, the luxury fashion brand calls the exact shade of Harris's pantsuit "coconut brown"—as in the tree you may or may not have fallen out of.

The coconut color aside, there's more relevant "context" to Harris's DNC outfit. The pantsuit itself has become a symbol of women's empowerment throughout the years—this style, specifically, was even created by a female designer, Chloé Creative Director Chemena Kamali.

Harris took that sentiment one step further, styling her co-ord with a pussy bow blouse. As the name implies, the hyper-feminine style is closely associated with girlhood, something rarely embraced by the political set. As an outspoken advocate for women's rights and bodily autonomy, it's a choice that speaks to her convictions.

Her jewelry, too, is significant. Harris typically wears pearls at campaign rallies as a tribute to her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA). The Vice President attended Howard University as an undergrad and has continually shown her support for the historically Black university.

In addition to the powerful sentiments behind the look, the fashion choice is also something of a political callback and jab at her opponents across the aisle. Back in 2015, President Barack Obama was famously criticized by Republicans for wearing khaki suits to press conferences, most notably during a 2014 press conference on Middle Eastern affairs. The choice turned an entire political party into armchair fashion experts and set a precedence of absurdity for so-called political scandals.

For the faux outrage crowd, Harris's tan Chloé suit will likely provide at least a week of political fodder because if we've learned anything from Barack Obama's presidency, it's that there's no political molehill that can't be made into a mountain.

But theatrics and mud-slinging aside, the Vice President's pantsuit begins her 2024 presidential campaign on a powerful and historic note.

On Thursday, August 15, Hailey Bieber snapped a quick pic from her closet to show off her outfit, as uploaded by Vogue. Her look included a navy blue tee adorned with the words "AMERICA IS AN IDEA" on the front, along with red and white stripes at the sleeves.

Not much can be seen from the waist and below, but it seems Bieber went the comfy route, completing her look with a pair of relaxed black pants. She also wore her brunette hair in a white claw clip and sported chunky gold hoop earrings, her signature "B" necklace, and a coral Rhode lip balm phone case.

Bieber's look comes in tandem with the re-emerging (and forever timeless) 2000s graphic tee trend, with stars like Kaia Gerber, Rihanna, and Jennifer Lopez using shirts as a canvas to make a literal statement. Gerber promoted her Library Science book club, while Jennifer Lopez used one as a self-reference to one of her hit songs.

Bieber's top is designed by Brother Vellies's Aurora James as part of an exclusive designer capsule supporting Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris ahead of the 2024 U.S. election in November.

Titled "Designers for Democracy," the collection features a wide range of hoodies, tees, and bags for Harris. According to Vogue, it was created in collaboration with more than a dozen American designers, including Vera Wang, Jonathan Cohen, Thom Browne, Tory Burch, and Prabal Gurung. All pieces are made in the U.S., and most are $50 or less.

"Vice President Harris and Governor Tim Walz are fighting for a future that strengthens our democracy, protects reproductive freedom, and ensures every person has the opportunity to not just get by, but to get ahead," Senior Harris-Walz Campaign Advisor Meaghan Burdick told Vogue. "The Designers for Democracy are a group of beloved American designers who believe in that vision and are working to get Harris and Walz to the White House."

James also talked about her contribution to the collection on Instagram, explaining the meaning behind the "AMERICA IS AN IDEA" top Bieber wore.

"America is a beautiful, strange and bountiful place. America is also an idea. And exactly whose idea she is, will be voted on up and down the ballot all across the country this November," James wrote. "For too long people that look like me were made to feel that we didn't belong here. But America belongs to all of us, equally. And we belong to her too. She is our home, she is our heart, she is our idea."

The Cost of Starting Your Own Business talks to founders to get an honest look at what it really takes to create a company. Not just the financial, but the personal and emotional costs, too.

You can use many epithets to describe Ella Emhoff. She's the stepdaughter of Vice President Kamala Harris—and come November, potentially the first daughter to POTUS. She's a fashion model, with Balenciaga and Miu Miu on her runway resume. And the internet has crowned the 25-year-old a certified It girl. Emhoff substantiates the latter title on a video call with Marie Claire, tuning in wearing a perfectly worn-in white tank top and a kitschy-cool beanie she made herself.

But going forward, Emhoff would like you to lead with this: artist, designer, and founder of the knitwear brand and crafting club Soft Hands. "No matter what, I'm always going to be connected to my family and modeling—it's a part of my history. But it feels really good to execute an idea I've had for a while and have it exist as its own thing," Emhoff says from her apartment-cum-studio in Brooklyn, New York.

She jokes that her entrepreneurial endeavor is a coming-of-age trope—"It's the classic, 'I'm 25. My frontal lobe is forming, so I'm doing my own thing now.'"—but she's earnest about how meaningful it is to pursue her passion for fiber arts. "It feels like I'm setting up for a more true-to-myself path. It's very liberating."

Emhoff remembers the first time she picked up a set of knitting needles with impressive recall: "My mom taught me how to knit at a Disneyland hotel when I was six years old with some kit from Target." She explains that "young Ella was a very crafty kid who just couldn't sit still," and knitting was a tool to tame her hyperactivity and force her to focus on the task at hand. The hobby stuck: Emhoff continued knitting as an anti-anxiety and de-stressing outlet throughout her childhood and later honed her practice at Parsons School of Design by studying fine arts and textiles.

She launched her knitwear collective Soft Hands in 2021 and has stayed busy ever since. The artist staged her New York Fashion Week debut in February 2023 with "Ella Emoff Likes to Knit," a pop-up presentation of mohair maxi gowns, chunky balaclavas, and sweater vests. She exhibited her knit "paintings" of Gucci hair barrettes and Sandy Liang Mary Janes at Gotham, a woman-owned art gallery-slash-weed dispensary in Manhattan this past spring.

Emhoff has also been selling out cozy wine bars for her Knit Club, where she teaches beginners the basics and cultivates a "third place" for people to gather. "A big part of my ability and inspiration to make knitwear is through community," she says. "So many formative moments [as an artist] come from the people you meet and the work you create in group settings. A lot of people coming to the [knit] clubs want that sense of place."

Emhoff is still that creative, can't-sit-still kid at her core, piling as many activities onto her plate as possible. "I can't stop doing and making things. My poor dog is always biting my ankles, like, 'Sit down, please. Stop putzing.' But I can't help it—it's my brain. I'm like a rabbit," she says. It makes sense: when you finally prioritize your passion and allow it to bloom, you can't trim or tamper with its natural growth. "There's so much more fun stuff coming with [Soft Hands] in the next year," she says with an ear-to-ear smile. "All I have to say is: get pumped."

Ahead, Emhoff speaks about using one career to fund another, getting a serendipitous endorsement from an A-lister, and taking care of her knitting-induced tendinitis.

I made a pair of striped pants for a final project in my machine knitting course at Parsons and posted them [online]. People were interested in them, so I started my business by selling those striped pants. For basically all of the pandemic, while I was quarantining in Los Angeles, I worked 10 straight hours a day making pants and, boy, was it hard. I was very naive back then about what it took to take a business from, 'Oh, I'm in college and selling pants’ to ‘Oh, now I'm out of college, and I'm trying to build an actual brand.’

[Modeling] was not my plan. I sort of fell into it. [Emhoff was signed to IMG Models after going viral for wearing a crystal-embellished, checkered Miu Miu coat to President Biden’s 2021 inauguration.] As I started getting more modeling work, I saw it as a job I could use to push my knitwear forward financially.

I didn’t want to get loans for my business because I didn't know if I was in it enough. I was still figuring out if I could actually make my art into something—if my knitwear was something that I wanted to put all my time and effort into. I met with wholesalers, but the product minimums were very high, and since I was doing all my own production, that quickly became impossible. So, I kept modeling because it was a good stream to keep pushing through with the brand. If I hadn't had that money coming in, I wouldn't have moved forward like I did [with Soft Hands].

I am a baseline highly anxious and sensitive person. I'm also a one-woman show, and it’s very stressful when you're trying to build a scalable brand by yourself with your own funding and you don't have anyone to riff off of. You have to be really strong to handle the feelings that come up when you spend so much time on a product and list it for what you feel it's worth, and it doesn't sell. Or, the opposite: I spend so much time working on my pieces—some of them take 50 hours to make—and knitting is such a therapeutic and intense process. My apartment is my studio, so I’m surrounded by all of my pieces all the time, and they're such a comfort [to me]. But then I sell them, and they become a part of someone else's story.

Having your likeness attached to your work also takes its toll. [Modeling] is not for the faint of heart. It's just so intense—it makes you the way you make money. It's hard on the self, and I couldn't handle it. [Modeling] was not a world that I could comfortably work in. I couldn't remove myself from my knitwear work and be the faceless person behind [Soft Hands] because my modeling was always connected to the brand. Now that I'm stepping out of the fashion space and not modeling as much, there's less pressure. I can now be more behind the scenes [with Soft Hands], and it's already feeling a lot better.

I developed tendonitis in my wrist because I was knitting so much. A classic visual is me at my knitting machine wearing two wrist braces.

I'm excited to lean into more gallery work because it lends itself to you doing your thing, letting it sit in the exhibit, and then you can make the other thing. It brings more baby steps. And my wrists need the baby steps.

Last night, I went to a dinner event and was seated next to Katie Holmes. She was so lovely and asked me a lot about knitting. I told her about [Soft Hands Knit Club] and how I take yarn donations from people, specifically from a lot of older women's yarn stashes. She was like, “Oh, my mom knits! I'm going to get in contact with you, and I'll send [her yarn] over so you can add it to your pile.” It was surreal. Katie Holmes was not on my bingo card of people to send me yarn.

At the beginning of Soft Hands, I had a lot of meetings with brand designers. They told me there are two parts to having a brand. There's creating the look, the product, and the brand ethos—its identity, story, and character. Then, there's the other part, the business side—the emailing, managing, and hiring of new people. As the brand owner, you have to decide: Are you going to stay on the creative side, or will you be the owner and relinquish [the creating] to someone else and be on the business side?

That really stuck with me because when I started [Soft Hands], I was doing a lot of the admin work when I wanted to do the actual making of the product. [Those conversations] made me restructure what my brand is. I realized I could bring all the different facets of my knitwear journey, my art, and my business into one creative endeavor. Now, [Slow Hands] is less of a knitwear clothing brand and more of a creative studio that does knitwear, gallery art, and graphic design. It feels nice to take a step back and think less about the short-term goals and more about how I want to see this knitting thing grow in the long term. What steps can I take to see the bigger picture rather than, 'Oh, I need to make a collection, figure out wholesale, and get on X, Y, Z retailer site.'

I never thought that I wanted to do knitwear professionally—it was something I just wanted to do for myself. It’s been tough to balance [knitting] being what I love to do with it now being what I do for work. I try to treat the projects as a hobby and not think about it so much as I'm monetizing my craft. To think of it more as, ‘I'm making these pieces, I'm doing these clubs, I'm doing all of this stuff, and it just happens to be my job.’ If I think of it the other way, it takes the fun out of an already repetitive, long, and physically strenuous task.

There was a point when it had gone too far in the work direction, and I wasn't making stuff that I liked or that felt true to what I wanted to do. It felt like I was working all the time and putting myself and a lot of resources into something that I didn't even want to do. Now, it’s more of my craft and career morphing together as a positive thing because I know I'm really lucky to do what I love every day as a job and to experiment and be goofy with it.

The day I released my first collection online was a little dramatic and tear-filled. [The collection] didn't sell as well as I thought it would, and the thought of releasing my knitwear to people I didn't know sent me into a spiral. I didn't know why they were buying it, and I thought, 'I just did all of that for what? Now, it's out there. I'm never going to see it again. I don't know where it's going or if my knitwear will gain momentum.' I just felt really sad. I was really in my head and wasn't sure I wanted to keep going with [Soft Hands]. That was when I was going to throw in the towel. But I didn't.

When I did my “Ella Emhoff Likes to Knit” presentation at Spring Studios last year. My friends, peers, and a lot of creatives were looking at art that I'd never shown in person before. That moment was really special to me.

My work—whether it's the knitwear, gallery work, or the knitting club—is inherently very fun. It's colorful. It brings out positive emotions, and it was so cool to see people react to that. I was looking around at everyone and felt so lucky to be in this industry and to have these people there. Through all the stress and everything—I mean, I walked the [Collina Strada Fall 2023] runway show the night before and then stayed up until 4:00 AM finishing everything for the presentation—it felt so special. That's when I knew that I don't like the making a lot of clothing aspect of knitting. I love the seeing people be happy about things I make aspect. That is so much more gratifying and fulfilling to me than selling a thousand units.

I speak often about what it means to be a Black woman in elected office, representing multiple marginalized identities that are both highly visible and invisible at the same time. That’s the reality when you break hundred-year concrete ceilings and become a “first.”

The fact that Kamala Harris is where she is now says everything. I have no doubt that, growing up, she was required to be twice as good for half the credit. Time and time again, she has broken barriers, made history, and led with strength and humanity. She is uniquely and exceptionally qualified to be the next President of the United States of America.

Picturing her on the dais, accepting the Democratic nomination, poised to become the first woman, first Black woman, and first Indian American President of the United States—it’s emotional for me.

It’s emotional because it's personal. Her story is the story of millions in America. We see ourselves reflected in her.

Like Kamala, I was raised by a strong woman who taught me the words of Shirley Chisholm and Toni Morrison.

Like Kamala, I went to my first protests and community meetings in a stroller.

She and I have faced many of the same challenges and roadblocks. As women making our way in politics, we've been met with biases and misogynoir. We know what it's like for your victories to be qualified as circumstance and your stumbles to be credited to your character.

Like Kamala, I was blessed to meet the love of my life and become a bonus mom (“Momala” in her case), building a beautiful, blended family.

She made history as the first woman of color to serve as Attorney General of California and the second Black woman in the U.S. Senate. I made history as the first Black woman to serve Massachusetts in Congress.

Like Kamala, my life and career have been defined by a fierce commitment to public service and an abiding belief in government as a force for good.

And like Kamala, I have been many “firsts,” writing the blueprint for someone else’s survival—but I vow to never be the last.

It’s no surprise that Republicans have already sought to weaponize her identity against her, to dub her as “the DEI candidate.” It’s an easy attack—and a predictable one. Bigotry and dog whistles like these are the tired playbook of a party whose policies have become dangerous and deeply unpopular.

Make no mistake: Identity matters and representation is powerful. Kamala is a woman of color. A loving Momala. Maya’s sister and Doug’s wife. She is also a former Attorney General. A scholar. A history-making U.S. Senator. And the sitting Vice President. She is the first one in the room and the last one at the table when important decisions are made. So let’s be clear: “Representation” is just one of many reasons Vice President Harris is the most qualified person for this job and this moment.

In a time when reproductive rights are diminishing daily, Kamala has been a powerful champion and effective messenger for abortion justice, IVF, and birth control. As a leading voice on student debt cancellation, I say sincerely that Kamala has been an engaged and responsive partner. We’ve worked together on efforts to address the maternal health crisis, advance housing justice, demand paid family leave, and protect voting rights.

There has been a seismic shift in the presidential election. Kamala is officially the Democratic nominee. And in picking Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate—an educator, champion for workers, and defender of reproductive freedom—Kamala once again demonstrated her leadership, her judgment, and her commitment to making progress for our communities.

Candidates are human, and they must learn in public. As an elected official, I know our strength lies in being responsive and accountable. Kamala is committed to earning the trust of voters who have felt unseen and unheard by status quo politics.

The stakes in this election couldn’t be clearer. And Vice President Harris has given us reason to hope—a deep and abiding hope that is less about wishing and more about working.

Despite their empty, morally bankrupt promises of unity, Donald Trump and Republicans have made their agenda clear: to attack our most basic rights and freedoms.

In Donald Trump’s America, women reading this article today, from Massachusetts to Mississippi, could be forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term—even one caused by rape or incest. Kamala is a champion for abortion justice.

In Donald Trump’s America, housing prices would continue to skyrocket while people are thrown in jail for being unhoused. Kamala will continue working to end homelessness.

In Donald Trump’s America, fossil fuel companies would thrive while our babies suffer in cities that are too hot and ill-equipped to protect our most vulnerable from climate change. Kamala is a champion for the Green New Deal and would be the most strident environmental justice President in history.

We have the opportunity to embrace a politics rooted in community, equity, and dignity. To leave our children and grandchildren a better world than we inherited.

There are less than three months until Election Day. With Vice President Harris at the top of the ticket—as a tribute to my departed mother, for the future of my teenage daughter, and on behalf of everyone who has ever been left out and left behind—I will fight like hell for a better future.

On Tuesday, Kamala Harris selected Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota as her running mate in her presidential bid, The New York Times reported. The Democratic nominee for president shared the news on social media, writing on X, "I am proud to announce that I've asked @Tim_Walz to be my running mate." She continued, "As a governor, a coach, a teacher, and a veteran, he's delivered for working families like his. It's great to have him on the team."

Walz shared his gratitude on X, writing, "It is the honor of a lifetime to join @kamalaharris in this campaign." He continued, "I’m all in." Expressing excitement for the future of the election campaign, Harris also wrote, "Vice President Harris is showing us the politics of what’s possible. It reminds me a bit of the first day of school."

But who is Tim Walz? Here's what you need to know about Kamala Harris' pick for VP.

He gained attention for calling the Republicans "weird people."

Walz perhaps gained an edge over the other VP contenders when he gave an interview on MSNBC, which subsequently went viral. "These are weird people on the other side," he told MSNBC (via the BBC). "They want to ban books. They want to be in your [doctor's] exam room."

Further elaborating on the Trump-Vance campaign ticket, Walz said, "You know there's something wrong with people when they talk about freedom: freedom to be in your bedroom, freedom to be in your exam room, freedom to tell your kids what they can read. That stuff is weird."

He's the governor of Minnesota.

Walz is currently serving his second term as the governor of Minnesota, after taking office in 2018. Since becoming the 41st governor of Minnesota, Walz has helped provide universal free school meals, fought for reproductive freedom and voting rights, and increased paid leave for workers.

In his role as governor, Walz also declared July 20, 2023 as Beyoncé Day in Minnesota, to commemorate the singer's Renaissance World Tour stop at Huntington Bank Stadium, via WCCO News. While Walz wasn't the first Minnesota governor to celebrate Beyoncé's indisputable talent, his recognition of the superstar is certainly welcome.

He's a former football coach, a teacher, and a veteran.

Walz grew up in Nebraska, where he enlisted in the Army National Guard after graduating from high school, his official bio notes. After receiving a social science degree from Chadron State College in 1989, he went on to work for the National Guard, serving for a total of 24 years.

He also became employed as a high school teacher in Mankato, Minnesota, where he "coached the school’s football team to a state championship," The New York Times reported.

His wife, Gwen, can "get anything done."

Walz met his wife, fellow teacher Gwen Whipple, while working at the same school, and they tied the knot in 1994. Since he became governor, Gwen has served as first lady of Minnesota, a role she doesn't take lightly. "Tim is the governor and makes the governor decisions," Gwen told the Star Tribune. "We have a lot to do and everyone has a role and part in it. It is my responsibility to find my way forward in this new role, with respect and awareness."

Walz has also made it clear that Gwen is an important part of his life and work, something that will likely continue in his role as Harris' vice president pick. "My wife can plan and get anything done," Walz said of Gwen's abilities while speaking to the Star Tribune.

Tim Walz is a passionate advocate for reproductive rights.

Tim and Gwen Walz have two children—daughter Hope, who was born in January 2001, and son Gus, born in October 2006, People reported.

The couple welcomed their children after undergoing fertility treatments at the Rochester Mayo Clinic for a period of seven years. Tim discussed his family's fertility journey in an interview with the Star Tribune in March 2024, following the Alabama Supreme Court's ruling regarding embryos created during IVF. Most importantly, the governor wanted to ensure people continued to have control over their reproductive rights, ranging from IVF to abortion.

In January 2023, Walz enshrined the right to reproductive health care, including abortion, into Minnesota statutes, AP reported. Since then, he's made it clear he hopes to protect Minnesota residents when it comes to their reproductive rights. "I’m going to build up the battlements around protection as much as I can," he told Star Tribune.

Vice President Kamala Harris only announced her bid for president a week ago and already, she's got an A-list cabinet in place. Meet her new "Head of Security," Megan Thee Stallion.

The rapper showed out for the Atlanta stop on the Harris campaign trail with her signature "hot girl" style on display. Jokingly calling herself "Thee new Head of Security," Stallion showed her support for the Democratic presidential candidate with a performance and a dedicated TikTok dance.

Stallion wore her best "corporate sleaze," bringing the trendy aesthetic to the political space. She took the stage to perform her hit song "Mamushi," wearing a Democrat-blue two-piece suit and matching tie.

To align with her signature risqué style, the rapper paired her co-ord with a white button-up that was cropped at the waist. She paired the look with black boots and a contrasting red lip—you know, because *America.*

While performing "Body," Stallion commented on Harris' stance on women's rights. "Now I know my ladies in the crowd love their bodies and if you want to keep loving your body—you know who to vote for!"

The rapper continued, saying: "I’m so happy to be here Atlanta! We’re about to make history with the first female president. The first Black female president! Let’s get this done!"

Vice President Harris, meanwhile, wore a slate gray suit and a simple white T-shirt. Dressing both for the job she has and the job she wants, the candidate accessorized with layered gold necklaces strung with pearls and a contrasting silver flag pin.

"Ours is a fight for the future and it is a fight for freedom. Across our nation, we are witnessing a full-on assault on hard-fought, hard-won freedoms and rights," Harris told the crowd. "I don't have to tell folks in Atlanta, that generations of Americans before us led the fight for freedom and now the baton is in our hands."

Bottom line: Hot girls vote.

The GOP has a message for their rank and file: Don’t talk about Kamala Harris’s gender or race.

And I have a message for Kamala Harris: Don’t fall for it.

After the far-right started up their chorus of sexist and racist attacks on Harris—calling her, among other insults, a “DEI vice president”—party leaders rushed to shut it down. At a closed-door meeting with lawmakers this week, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson warned his membership to steer clear of comments about the vice president’s identity.

That’s because the GOP knows that, if this becomes a campaign about identity, they’re going to lose.

Like it or not, they’ve made this race a referendum on female power. Not only have Republicans gleefully stripped away women’s reproductive freedoms, but they’ve made toxic masculinity a centerpiece of their political strategy. (Just think about Hulk Hogan ripping off his shirt at the Republican National Convention.) Now they’re desperate to avoid talking about the policy issues, the women’s issues, that Harris is strongest on—with the biggest potential to galvanize Democratic voters.

And that’s why Kamala Harris absolutely should be talking about her gender and her race—loudly and proudly.

Women voters know what’s really at stake here. The Dobbs decision left young people with fewer reproductive freedoms than their mothers and grandmothers had at their age. It set off a ripple effect, too, putting access to birth control and IVF in danger. And it emboldened the far-right to reach for even more ambitious goals, like outlawing no-fault divorce—which could prevent women from fleeing domestic violence.

That’s not to mention how hard life already is for women and moms in America: the only industrialized nation without paid leave, where child care costs more than housing in every state. It wasn’t that long ago that women were struggling to re-enter the workforce after the pandemic. Now they’re struggling to make ends meet for their families, with inflation hitting parents especially hard.

Yet these very real issues are often cast as second-tier, relegated to the end of the to-do list behind jobs and health care and public safety. (Though you may notice that these “women’s issues” are, in fact, about jobs and health care and public safety.) Women are tired of seeing them brushed to the side.

And that’s why we’re seeing such a surge of excitement for the Harris campaign—44,000 people joined a Win With Black Women organizing call for her this past weekend and raised $1 million in three hours. In Harris, they see someone who is not qualified for our nation’s highest office in spite of her identity, but because of her identity.

If you look back at Harris’s long, impressive career, women’s issues have always been at the center. In high school, when Harris learned her best friend was being sexually abused by her stepfather, the Harris family took her in—an experience that later inspired her to become a prosecutor. As a senator, she fearlessly took on Brett Kavanaugh —questioning him about the allegations of sexual assault and his stance on abortion. During her 2020 campaign for president, she proposed one of the strongest paid family leave policies of all the candidates in the primary.

And as Vice President, she has been one of the most important advocates for reducing Black maternal mortality in our nation’s history. She has been an ardent champion of abortion rights and outspoken about the need to cap child care costs for American families.

For Harris, fighting for women’s rights has been her greatest strength—and positioned her to lead the country today. She should run on those women’s issues now, putting her identity as a Black, South Asian woman front and center in her campaign.

I understand why that could feel like a risky move. Women candidates have been taught, explicitly and implicitly, that leaning into their identity can be a liability.

But the alternative is risky, too—because playing it safe could mean losing this election. Donald Trump’s Vice Presidential pick is just another proof point that the next four years will be hellish for women. JD Vance has intimated support for a nationwide abortion ban, and said that the Democrats—citing Harris specifically—are “miserable” and “childless cat ladies.” With the two of them in power, you can all but guarantee that women’s rights—along with LGBTQ rights, the safety of Black Americans, and more—will be in danger.

Yes, we need to be sounding the alarm on abortion, IVF, and child care. But we need to do something bigger than that, too: challenge the entrenched systems of male power at the heart of Donald Trump’s campaign.

It’s a tall order—but Harris can lead us there. This week, we saw just a taste of what it looks like for women to step into their own power. Now let’s fully unleash it.

Reality television star and entrepreneur Kim Kardashian is back at the White House to continue to advocate for criminal justice reform.

On Thursday, April 25, Kardashian attended a roundtable discussion hosted by Vice President Kamala Harris and White House public engagement director Steve Benjamin to discuss ongoing efforts to reform the criminal justice system on a federal level.

The meeting marked a return to the White House for Kardashian, who visited four years ago to discuss the same topic with then-President Donald Trump.

To start the meeting, Vice President Harris thanked the reality star for her continued activism and ongoing dedication to highlighting the topic.

"I want to thank Kim for your advocacy and for using your platform in a way that has really lifted up the importance of talking about and being dedicated to second chances," Harris said.

Also in attendance, as reported by Axios, were four of the 16 people previously granted clemency by President Joe Biden and his administration earlier this week.

In a 2020 interview with TIME, Kardashian opened up about the moment she realized the country's criminal justice system needed an overhaul.

In 2017, Kardashian was scrolling her X, formerly known as Twitter, feed when she came across the story of Alice Marie Johnson—a woman who received a life sentence in 1996 for working as a "phone mule" for a Memphis drug ring.

Kardashian told the publication it was a "huge eye opener," adding that it didn't make any sense to her "that someone who was a phone mule (received) a harsher sentence than Charles Manson."

"It just really broke my heart and I just wanted to help her," she said at the time. "Because I (knew) I could."

Kardashian started working with Johnson's lawyers and advocacy groups, and in 2018 successfully petitioned former President Trump to commute Johnson's sentence.

At Thursday's White House roundtable discussion, Kardashian addressed the newly-pardoned panelists, saying she was "super honored to be here to hear" their stories.

"I think it's so important to share them and amplify them because there are so many people that are in your position that could use the inspiration," she continued, according to a report from USA Today. "I'm just here to help and spread the word."

The reality star also shared how her advocacy work has inspired her to pursue her law degree.

"It was actually in this very room that I was in years ago, my first clemency meeting, that really inspired me to take a journey," Kardashian explained. "I didn't know a whole lot, and I was inspired to go to law school and really further my education to see what I can do to help."

During the same discussion, Vice President Harris highlighted the need to pardon or commute incredibly harsh sentences for non-violent crimes, including marijuana charges in the wake of so may states legalizing the substance.

"For example, on marijuana, we have pardoned all people for federal convictions for simple marijuana possession," she explained, highlighting the current administration's efforts to release those imprisoned for low-level drug charges.

"Many of you have heard me say I just don't think people should have to go to jail for smoking weed," she continued. "And these pardons have been issued as an extension of that approach."

The pandemic decimated an already-struggling childcare industry—an industry that saw 90,000 fewer workers between 2020 and 2022. With half of Americans living in childcare deserts and the cost of childcare continuing to increase, the Biden administration has made affordable, accessible childcare a critical part of the “Bidenomics” plan. 

Yesterday, Vice President Kamala Harris revealed new actions to lower childcare costs for American families (check out video of the announcement shared exclusively with Marie Claire, below). Here’s what you need to know about the announcement:

What changes did the Vice President announce?

The announcement focused on the Child Care & Development Block Grant (CCDBG), which currently provides childcare assistance to 1.5 million children and their families. A new federal rule would cap childcare copayments for working families and encourage states to waive copayments for families who are at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty line. These changes would help reduce childcare costs for nearly 80,000 families.

Additionally, Vice President Harris shared two changes that would benefit childcare workers, some of the most important, yet most undervalued, workers in our economy. Thanks to the first, nearly 200,000 providers would be paid on-time, enabling them to cover their expenses. This is a welcome change for childcare providers, who are currently paid retroactively, which disincentivizes their participation in the program. Secondly, more than 100,000 providers would be paid based on the total enrollment in their programs, rather than on attendance—a move that guarantees stability for providers even if children are absent.

Finally, the one-third of states that still require families to complete paper applications to access assistance would be mandated to accept applications online, modernizing the program.

What else has the Biden administration done to lower childcare costs?

Earlier this year, President Biden signed an executive order to improve access to affordable childcare and improve working standards for caregivers. The order specifically targeted families of federal workers and military families. It also sought to increase salaries for teachers and staff of Head Start, a program that serves more than 1 million children.

To kick off the second season of She Pivots, I had the privilege of interviewing Vice President Kamala Harris in front of a live audience alongside Minnesota’s Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan. I wanted to uncover what drove her career path—from prosecutor to district attorney to attorney general to senator to vice president. 

Despite what many might see as a trajectory based on professional motivations, Harris’ biggest pivots have been driven by personal experiences. In fact, her decision to pursue a career of public service came with a life-altering moment in high school.

“One of my best friends in high school—while we were in high school, I learned that she was being molested,” Harris said during our live She Pivots podcast recording. “And I learned what it was and…the powerlessness that also is a part of it, that one is rendered to feel as though they are powerless. And, in many ways, that was one of the reasons I became a prosecutor.”

Motivated by her family and her deep desire to fight injustice on a larger scale, Harris decided she could have more impact as district attorney in California. But she faced her fair share of doubters, both before and after she was elected in 2003. “I was the first Black woman to ever have been elected as DA anywhere in the State of California,” Harris said. “And so, you can imagine when I decided to run, and I took on an incumbent, the number of people that said to me, ‘Oh, they're not ready for you.’ ‘It's not your time.’ ‘It's going to be hard work.’ And I didn't listen."

Harris’ passion for protecting those who are suffering injustices—stemming back to both her high school best friend’s experiences and her family’s own life experiences—has played an enormous role in every step of her career. Fighting for child sexual assault survivors pushed her to bring greater attention to domestic violence and sex trafficking crimes. And watching friends and loved ones battle complications during pregnancy motivated her fight to lower the Black maternal mortality rate when she was elected to the Senate in 2016. 

“Speaking of personal experiences, someone very close to me just lost a member of their family, she died in connection with childbirth, just within the last month,” Harris said.

As Vice President, Harris' roots and commitment to fighting injustice continues. “[I’m motivated by] my mother to just living, period, and experiencing, firsthand, so many of the points that you are making,” Harris told me. “And, in particular, an acute awareness of the fact that we can do something about most of the problems we have. I really am driven by that.”

This is especially true in protecting women’s bodily autonomy, something that hangs in the balance after the Supreme Court struck down the Roe v. Wade decision last year. My girls are two and four, and they were my first thought when the Dobbs decision came out. And I think about the fact that they're growing up with fewer rights than what I had, with fewer rights than their grandmother had. Harris agreed.

“Our 23-year-old daughter will have fewer rights than my 81-year-old mother-in-law. And they're both acutely aware of it,” Harris noted, reflecting on the personal stakes she has in this fight. Winning on issues like abortion access will never be easy, but Harris is up for the challenge. “Do not be overwhelmed, do not be tired, do not throw up your hands when it's time to roll up your sleeves,” Harris told the audience.

Remember when we all believed that women could have it all? I do. I was at the height of my political career, working as an executive at one of the largest think tanks in Washington, D.C., taking on huge fights like repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (the military’s ban on gay service members) and going head-to-head with the NRA.

Other things were hitting their peak then, too. Like the merry-go-round of aspirational content on social media, spinning out picture-perfect photos of women posing with their families in color-coordinated outfits. Women showing off their fairytale houses. Women brunching with friends. Women rocketing into work in stilettos. Women—having it all. I bought into it.

Until 2016, when I had my first child. Within the next few years, I had two more. That’s when I left my decade-long career in politics. It was a crushing blow of defeat. And without my career as an anchor, I slowly began to lose my grip on my personal identity. I no longer knew how to answer the simple question of who I was.

Now, women are pushing back against the tropes of having it all and leaning in. We are in the midst of a massive societal shift where women are continuing to reshape and re-examine the narrative around work. We’re over the Girl Boss and we’re leaving behind the systems that don’t serve us. Perhaps that’s why last year over 40 percent of Americans planned to make a career change. 

Things changed for me, too. Among them: I launched my podcast “She Pivots” as a way to share stories of women who are finding new career paths that are a better fit for their lives. With the new season premiering, these are a few things I heard from some incredible women.

Vice President Kamala Harris on Not Letting Others Define You

On paper, there is no question that Vice President Harris is highly accomplished. From serving as the district attorney of San Francisco, to attorney general of California, to senator, to presidential candidate, to now the first Black, female, Asian American vice president in history, her story seems to seamlessly transition from one success to the next. 

But the real success is taking on the challenge of a pivot and occupying spaces so many people told her she was not welcome. For every new office she assumed, Vice President Harris said yes in the face of so many who questioned her very identity.

"When I was elected DA of San Francisco, I was the first Black woman to have ever been elected as DA anywhere in the state of California,” she tells me during our interview. “And so, you can imagine when I decided to run, and I took on an incumbent, the number of people that said to me, ‘Oh, they’re not ready for you.’ ‘It’s not your time.’ ‘It’s going to be hard work.’ And I didn’t listen.” Lucky for us!

Restauranteur Pinky Cole on How Setbacks Can Reset Us

I ask every guest to tell me about something they saw as a low point in their life that they now view as a positive. I think it gets to the heart of why so many women change paths. This couldn’t be more true for Cole. After losing her first eatery to a grease fire in 2016, her life was turned upside down. “To lose the thing that you live and breathe every single day and then you go broke at the same time—it was very difficult,” says Cole. “I felt like I failed." But with time, she realized that it was that difficult moment that eventually put her on the right path. “I needed that to happen, so that I could shift and adjust and do something new.” 

Her ability to reframe led her to create her restaurant franchise Slutty Vegan in 2018, which is now a multi-million-dollar company with several locations. As she says now, “Sometimes we go through difficulties in our personal and professional lives so that we can see a different light.”

Broadway Star Carla Stickler on Moving On From What You Love

Stickler made headlines for leaving behind her coveted spot in the Broadway show Wicked to take a corporate job as a software engineer. “People have trouble wrapping their brain around that you would ever possibly want to give something up that they see as something that everyone wants,” says Stickler. “I had a lot of people that were like, ‘You’re living my dream.’ But the dream is really exhausting and I was burnt out.” 

Her story is exactly what you wouldn’t expect from the tales of success we hear daily. Instead of following that creative passion, she left it behind for something that made sense personally. 

Stickler’s interview left me with an important lesson: You can experience burnout—even from something you love. “I can show other people…that there is a world where you can do multiple things,” says Stickler. “Where the thing that your college self decided you wanted to do for the rest of your life doesn’t have to be the thing you do for the rest of your life. And if there is a way to find value in yourself alongside your journey as an artist, so you’re not constantly seeking it from somebody else, like why not find that, right?”

Every election matters—but this year, there’s more at stake than ever, from reproductive rights to the state of our democracy. With early voting underway in many states and election day (November 8!) right around the corner, now's the time to decide how you're going to vote. And no one understands how voters' choices could impact our country more than Vice President Kamala Harris. 

The Dobbs v. Jackson's decision, coupled with the continuing denial of the results of the 2020 election, have made it feel like the democracy America once had is crumbling beneath our feet. I was an organizer in 2016, and the impending doom we sensed that election night is eerily similar to the feelings evoked by the fall of Roe v. Wade in June.

Since the overturning of Roe, states across the country have either passed and signed or proposed legislation that would criminalize abortions. Nearly half of states—22 to be exact—have laws on the books to either ban or severely restrict abortion. That means 36 million women have lost access to this basic form of reproductive care. 

But despite the weight of these life-altering events, we have an opportunity ahead of us in this year’s midterms. 

I had the chance to sit down with the Vice President to have a conversation about where our country stands regarding reproductive rights for women—and so many other important policies. Alongside my co-moderator, Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan of Minnesota, we were able to dive into what Vice President Harris sees as the key issues defining this year’s midterm election and how we, as voters, can make a difference.

 Here, the four major takeaways: 

1. The right to your own body is on the line.

When the Dobbs ruling came down, millions of women had essential access to abortion ripped away, both by pre-existing trigger laws and new laws introduced this summer. Vice President Harris reinforced the importance of local elections, especially in regards to abortion rights, telling the audience, “Back to the local races—you know, whoever is your county prosecutor, if they are elected, pay attention. Especially for folks…in states where they're criminalizing healthcare providers. Doctors, nurses, healthcare providers are being criminalized with laws that are being proposed and passed that would literally put a healthcare provider in jail [for providing abortion care].” 

It is a heartbreaking reality that states are even proposing—and then passing—legislation with no exceptions for victims of rape or incest. As a former prosecutor and staunch advocate for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, the Vice President emphasized the inhumanity of it: “We're talking about a human being who has endured an act of extreme violence and violation to their body, and so-called leaders would then deprive that individual of the ability to make decisions about their body going forward. It's immoral.”

Nevertheless, Vice President Harris and President Biden have vowed to do their part to protect women. “It is a fact that the President of the United States, Joe Biden, has said he will not allow the filibuster to get in the way of passing and signing into law the Women's Health Protection Act…which would codify the protections of Roe v. Wade,” she added. 

She went on: “It is also a fact that we need two more United States senators who agree with that, in order for the President to be able to do that.” Senate races in many swing states, including Georgia, Nevada, and Pennsylvania, are increasingly tight. And many candidates have been vocal about their opposition to abortion access—even if they have tried to hide that position post-primary.

2. Health care, especially for Black and Native mothers, is on the ballot.

One issue that is incredibly personal to Vice President Harris is maternal health care. She underscored what’s at stake for Black and Native mothers in the United States this election cycle, saying, “Black women are three times more likely to die in connection with childbirth. Native women are twice as likely to die in connection with childbirth. Rural women are one-and-a-half times as likely to die.” The Biden administration has elevated the issue, hosting the Maternal Day of Action Summit last year and announcing a series of actions aimed at reducing maternal mortality.

But more can be done. Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (IL-14) has introduced the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act of 2021 in the House, but it has not moved forward in Congress. “Who is in Congress really matters,” Harris noted. Every House rep is up for election next week. Find out where your candidates stand on not just providing—but revolutionizing—essential health care.

 3. Democratic principles are at stake—in the United States and around the world.

Vice President Harris pointed out the implications of the election beyond abortion access: “There's so much about this issue, all of the layers to this issue, which include, as much as anything, our democracy and the state of our democracy. I think of democracy as [having] two sides to it. There's a duality to it. On the one hand, when the principles upon which our democracy was founded—freedom, liberty, justice—when a democracy is intact, it is extraordinarily strong, [as is] the power it gives the people. The duality is that, on the other hand, it is extremely fragile, this democracy. It is only as strong as our willingness to fight for it.”

Many candidates up and down the ballot this midterm cycle deny or reject the legitimacy of the 2020 election. They are outright running on it as part of their platform. If such candidates win, particularly offices like Secretary of State, our entire election system could be undermined or overhauled. Gerrymandering is already a serious problem that has historically allowed political parties to influence their own ability to stay in power; but this is different. The process of choosing our representatives could change from free and fair to partisan.

And the laws and policies we make in the United States have impacts far beyond our nation’s borders. Vice President Harris spoke about our country’s role in the world, noting, “One of my great fears is that autocrats around the world can then look at their people and say, ‘You want to talk about these rights? You want to talk about your United States of America? Look what they just did.’ And in that way, the impact will be not only for the people of America, but potentially people around the world.”

4. LGBTQ+ rights are under attack.

While the Dobbs decision only directly impacts abortion rights, the Supreme Court decision opened the door for other rights to be eroded in the future. Vice President Harris emphasized this risk, saying, “Don't forget, in the Dobbs decision…Clarence Thomas said the quiet part out loud. He literally said this opens up the next steps, which are to reexamine—which means question, which means attack, as far as I'm concerned—the right to contraception and the right to marry the person you love.” 

Congress has since taken steps to protect marriage equality, with the House passing the Respect for Marriage Act, which would codify the legality of same-sex and interracial marriages under federal law, with bipartisan support. But the Senate pushed their vote on the bill until after the midterms, meaning who we decide to send to Congress could affect whether or not this bill becomes law.

Vice President Harris ended the conversation with a call to action, telling the audience: “Do not be overwhelmed, do not be tired, do not throw your hands up when it’s time to roll up your sleeves.”

In the week since President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race, all eyes have been on the Democratic nominee for president, Vice President Kamala Harris.

Everything from her record as California's attorney general, to information about her father, Donald Harris, to even learning more about her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, potential voters are looking to learn more about Harris, who could very well become the first woman, Black woman, and South Asian woman to become president of the United States.

That includes voters wanting to learn more about Vice President Kamala Harris' net worth. Back in 2019, when she ended her 2020 presidential campaign, Harris said she had to back out of the crowded Democratic primary race "simply doesn't have the financial resources we need to continue."

"I'm not a billionaire. I can't fund my own campaign," she explained at the time. "And as the campaign has gone on, it's become harder and harder to raise the money we need to compete."

At the time, according to Fortune, Harris was worth an estimated $6.3 million. Since then, her net worth has increased.

Currently, Harris' net worth stands at an estimated $8 million, according to Forbes. As vice president, Harris earns $218,000 per year. The reason for her net worth's increase, according to Forbes, is largely thanks to a multimillion-dollar home Harris shares with her husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff.

According to the same Forbes report, the home increased in value, from $1 million in 2021 to $4.4 million in 2024. Harris has also more than $500,000 from various book advances she received before entering the White House.

It goes without saying, but the nation's first female VP, first Black VP, and first VP of South Asian descent has worked hard for her money—so here's a breakdown of where Harris's significant wealth comes from.

How much money has Kamala Harris earned from her political career?

Kamala was elected as district attorney of San Francisco in 2003. According to Forbes, she made more than $140,000 that year, with her wages steadily increasing throughout her six years in the position, peaking at $202,000 in 2010. The job made her eligible for a pension worth at least $250,000 today, per Women's Health.

When Harris became California's attorney general in 2010, according to her tax returns previously obtained by The New York Times, she took a significant drop in pay from her previous job, earning just under $160,000 a year. Seven years later, when she took office as a U.S. Senator representing California, her pay increased by a slight amount, up to the $174,000 annual salary that's been paid to every Senator since their last pay raise in 2009.

When Harris was sworn in as vice president in January 2021, she started to receive a federally mandated salary of $235,100—quite the pay bump from her past political gigs. In addition, Harris is allowed to write off up to $100,000 for VP-related expenses, along with being housed for free at Number One Observatory Circle, the official vice presidential residence.

How much money has Kamala Harris earned from her books?

As a three-time author, Harris has earned hundreds of thousands of dollars in book advances.

Harris published Smart on Crime: A Career Prosecutor’s Plan to Make Us Safer in 2009 and a children's picture book called Superheroes Are Everywhere in 2019. That same year, she released her memoir, The Truths We Hold: An American Journey. According to her 2018 tax returns, she earned $320,125 from writing and publishing her memoir.

In 2019, Harris reported earning $277,763 from various book advances. Since then, her three books garnished more than $359,000 in 2020 and $456,000 in 2021 in royalties.

Harris has not written or released a new book since taking office, however, so her book-related revenue stream decreased to $80,000 in 2022 and $8,488 in 2023, according to her latest filing and as reported by Forbes.

If Harris does become the first woman president of the United States, more books are likely to come.

What are Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff's joint assets?

Harris married lawyer Douglas Emhoff in 2014. During their time together and before Harris became vice president of the United States, the couple were estimated to have earned a combined $8.2 million in total, with annual earnings remaining steady around the $2 million mark throughout their six years of joint filings.

Most of their income came from Emhoff’s work at law firms Venable and DLA Piper, according to Forbes. In 2018 alone, according to the tax return Harris released for that fiscal year, she and Emhoff reported a total of $1.9 million in adjusted gross income; they paid a tax rate of about 37% on their earnings that year, which was, interestingly, the highest tax rate paid by any of the 2020 Democratic candidates that year, per The New York Times.

But when Harris resumed the vice presidency in 2021, her husband announced he would leave his law firm (and his substantial salary) behind.

Instead, he became a member of Georgetown University's law school faculty, earning $200,000 a year. The move "significantly dropped" the couple's income, ABC News reports, from more than $3 million in 2019 to around $450,000 in 2023.

You know it's going to be a good day when the vice president of the United States calls you while you're on the job—in space! In a video exclusively shared with Marie Claire, Vice President Kamala Harris chatted with NASA astronauts Shannon Walker and Kate Rubins, who are currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS) for a six-month mission, in honor of Women's History Month.

"Greetings from the White House, which is where I am right now," VP Harris says excitedly at the beginning of the video. The vice president then asks Astronaut Walker and Astronaut Rubins to tell viewers what they're currently researching in space. Astronaut Walker, who has a PhD in space physics, explains that they are working with free-floating satellites that will help with future explorations to the moon and Mars (!!), and studying hundreds of worms to look at how muscle strength changes in space.

"I don't think any of us really thought we would be astronauts," Astronaut Rubins—the first person to sequence DNA in space!—tells VP Harris. "So I would encourage everybody who's even thinking about it, just don't hold yourself back. All of our crew members do what we do because we love it. We love every minute of it."

Towards the end of the video, VP Harris expressed her gratitude for the astronauts and extended an invitation to them to come visit the White House when their "feet are back on the ground." Casual.

Fashion icon and former First Lady Michelle Obama attended the Biden-Harris inauguration on Wednesday, showing her support for the new administration's highly-anticipated and historic day. When it came to her outfit, Obama did not disappoint donning a magenta-colored jacket with matching monochromatic turtleneck sweater and wide-leg trousers. She completed the chic look with a gold belt, black leather gloves, a simple Christy Rilling black silk mask, and suede block-heeled boots by Stuart Weitzman; she wore her hair down in bouncy curls for the occasion.

Obama's outfit was designed by Sergio Hudson, a Black designer from South Carolina who also dressed the Vice President-elect on Wednesday. Hudson explained on The Bakari Sellers Podcast that Obama's outfit was inspired by a look from his Fall '20 collection.

"We did the pants instead a dress, and we did the top as a sweater instead of a dress," he said. "And, it’s pretty much the exact same look and we dropped the coat to the floor just for a little bit more drama, and that’s how we got where we got."

Purple was clearly the color of the day, with Vice President-elect wearing a bright violet jacket paired with her signature pearl necklace and purple gloves. Former Secretary of State and First Lady Hillary Clinton donned the color head-to-toe wearing an inky purple pantsuit, while Sen. Elizabeth Warren tied a lilac scarf around her neck. Purple is typically meant to represent bipartisanship—a clear cornerstone of the new administration after four years of divisiveness.

\Meanwhile, incoming First Lady Dr. Jill Biden stood out in blue for the big day, opting for a wool tweed coat and dress by American designer Alexandra O’Neil of Markarian.

People were thrilled to see the Obamas there alongside the Bidens (who, of course, served as the Vice President and Second Lady during their years in the White House).

Obama's tenure in the White House was marked by her flawless style which focused on up-and-coming American designers—J.Crew and Jason Wu were favorite of the former FLOTUS. For her husband's first inauguration in 2009, Obama wore a custom Isabel Toledo dress and coat.

Obama's stylist Meredith Koop took to Instagram the day after the inauguration to reveal more about the decisions behind the outfit and to celebrate the success of the look. "When MO returned afterwards, she said, 'I was so comfortable!' Literal music to my ears," Koop penned on social media. "I have learned to respect her consistent sense of practicality and pragmatism (Capricorn) dressing her in pieces she can live, move and inspire in." (Koop and Obama have worked together since 2010.)

Koop revealed that she immediately knew she wanted pants for the day: "Ah, the liberation of pants! No skirts, no dresses. Practical beautiful pants." And because she wanted to channel "sleek, chic and modern" she opted for dark, jewel tones and blacks and grays instead of brighter hues.

She dubbed the First Lady's outfit as "wineberry plum" and then revealed that it wasn't a political statement to opt for "bi-partisan purple" as many outlets had assumed.

"That’s a cute story, but it wasn’t the intention," she wrote.

Koop also explained that she had first considered styling Obama in matching plum-dyed shoes, mask, and gloves but decided "last minute" to go with black accessories. "It felt modern and more how women tend to dress," Koop said.

While the stylist offered up plenty of praise to Hudson for his "exceptional" designs, she also gave most of the credit for the look to Obama herself, saying that the clothes simply allowed the former FLOTUS to stand out and represent who she is to America.

"This particular outfit is about the woman wearing it more than anything," Koop wrote. "She is powerful and she needs to move. She is stunning and she represents what is possible. She is relatable and she is aspirational. She has consistently articulated over the years what has been in the hearts and minds of so many. She has taken a look at the rule book and turned the page. She leads, she inspires and she slays."

I am once again asking you to apply an extremely versatile photo of Bernie Sanders to a multitude of situations in your life—because, yet again, the Vermont senator has gone viral for merely being his 79-year-old self. Sanders' latest meme-able event arrived almost exactly a year after his last, the still-applicable "I am once again asking you" moment from a late 2019 fundraising video. Upon his arrival at the Jan. 20 inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as the nation's new president and vice president, Sanders plopped down in a folding chair far away from the rest of the audience (social distancing king!), burrowed into his coat and cozy-looking knit mittens, and waited for the festivities to begin. And thus, a meme was born.

As with previous widely circulated photos of Sanders, the most relatable thing about this snapshot is the septuagenarian's constant air of no-nonsense grumpiness and a general vibe of being immediately over whatever is happening if it doesn't directly pertain to his legislative goals—in the same way that, say, you might be incredibly over a party if you're just not in a partying mood. That vibe, plus Sanders' admirable dedication to COVID protocols, just might qualify this incredible photo as not only the first truly great meme of 2021, but also a perfect encapsulation of this particular moment in history.

In an added bonus, viewers have noticed that Sanders appears to be wearing the exact same Burton coat in his 2021 meme as he was in the fundraising video that soon became his 2020 "I am once again asking you" meme. That relatively casual parka (especially compared to the stunning designer coats donned by pretty much everyone else at the inauguration) and the manilla folder Sanders was clutching throughout the ceremony also contributed to a general sense that, as one Twitter user wrote, "Bernie dressed like the inauguration is on his to do list today but ain't his whole day."

As for the mittens, according to BuzzFeed News reporter Ruby Cramer on Twitter, they were gifted to Sanders by a Vermont teacher who made them out of repurposed wool sweaters and recycled plastic bottles. If you had "Bernie Sanders becomes a sustainable fashion icon" on your 2021 bingo card, go ahead and cross it out.
