New York City was no place for summer trends this Memorial Day weekend. Thunderstorms kept my favorite fashion girls—plus, their sundresses and sandals—far from the nearest paparazzi lens. But on May 26, the sun brought Katie Holmes back to the street style scene with a sheer polka-dot shirt I'm sure she would've worn last weekend, had the forecast cooperated.

Holmes and her latest daytime look bridged the gap between polished and personalized. First, she traded her traditional white button-downs for a navy blue top splattered with white polka-dots. Zac Posen was certainly honored to be named Designer of the Year at the 2026 American Image Awards. on April 21. But the real reward was accepting the trophy from Katie Holmes, who wore a custom GapStudio suit and a Spring 2026 shoe trend worthy of its own prize.

Last week, Holmes celebrated Posen's Old Navy x Christopher John Rogers collaboration (in $64.99 jeans from the new line). On Tuesday, she showed up for Posen again in an all-black tuxedo from another brand in his stable: Gap. First, stylist Brie Welch assisted Holmes in trading a white button-down for a satin, bone-in corset crafted just for her. Its plunge neckline was barely visible beneath a shoulder-padded, double-weave blazer, featuring oversize satin lapels. (GapStudio's duchess satin shined just as much as Posen's matching set, perhaps on purpose.)

Gap is known for its colorful catalog, so Holmes channeled it subtly with her necklace's multi-color gemstones. She adores vibrant shoes on the street style scene, like her tomato-red ballet flats. But here, high-vamp heels from Herbert Levine continued Holmes's mostly-black color story.

Holmes took cues from Jennifer Lawrence and Hailey Bieber's high-vamp heels, selecting a pair with razor-sharp toe-boxes. (The high-vamp flats she wore with her strawberry-red and aquamarine color combination last week stretched just as far.) Their glossy patent sheen was a chic contrast against her mostly-matte suit. If celebrities like Harrier or Ferreira endorsed It-shoes underneath layers of satin and tulle, we wouldn't know it. Spring color combinations hitting the VIP street style scene this week could cause a minimalist to change their ways. Katie Holmes, for one, is partial to strawberry red and some shade of blue. On April 16, the New Yorker tapped color wheel opposites again, this time with her favorite basic and an aquamarine blue dress.

Afternoon walks in the West Village are Holmes's time to shine—and shine she did, in an eye-squintingly strawberry red button-down. It shared the same silhouette as the white rendition she wore to Tuesday's Lincoln Hall gala, except the tint looked as ripe as a fresh-from-the-garden berry. (It also matched the trim on April 15's maxi skirt.) She rolled up its sleeves, buttoned just the top, and kept the bodice of her Dôen Marcelle Dress from view.

At first, I thought Holmes chose the matching midi skirt, judging by its buttery silk satin and nude lace trim. However, occasional gusts of wind revealed the dress's light blue sheen actually stretched up her torso. I should've known, since now is usually the time celebrities pull their Dôen dresses out of storage.

Then, the same floral lace on the maxi's ankle-grazing hem returned as the neckline's paneling. Cascading baby bows down the bust remained out of sight, though. Fingers crossed she wears it solo next time—the back's bow-tied cut-outs deserve a proper paparazzi shot.

Marie Claire named lace-trimmed slips like Holmes's a winning dress trend for Spring 2026: They're "one of spring’s most wearable ways to tap into the season’s ongoing nakedness theme," wrote fashion contributor Irina Grechko. Since then, Jennifer Lopez, Olivia Rodrigo, and now Holmes have answered the lingerie-adjacent call.

Speaking of Marie Claire-approved trends, the Dawson's Creek actor couldn't finish her errands set without ballet flats of some sort. She traded her typical square-toe pair for the high-vamp flats trend. Much like pairs on Zoë Kravitz, Kendall Jenner, and Rihanna's shoe racks, the uppers extended to loafer lengths, while maintaining the slipper-looking suave of ballet flats. The brand behind Holmes's black leather pair remains a mystery, despite wearing them on repeat since last July.

The same equestrian hardware atop her elongated toe boxes also frosts the front of the label's Borsetto Bag. To finish, the Dawson's Creek alum re-wore the bucket-style A.P.C. bag seen alongside her Miu Miu Mary Janes last week.

While it's a haircut that's never exactly gone out of style, experts are predicting that requests for it will heavily increase this season. “I gave Hailey Bieber a lob at the end of 2025, and it’s already been defining one of the biggest hair trends of 2026,” celebrity hairstylist Justine Marjan previously told us. And she's not too far off.

Demi Lovato wore a glossy, '90s-style lob while attending an event in New York City a month ago, and months before Zendaya stepped out with her fluffy bixie haircut, she attended a Louis Vuitton show during Paris Fashion Week wearing a flippy lob.

White button-downs are by far the most beloved basic in my spring wardrobe. However, after wearing them on repeat with jeans, track pants, and other seasonal pant trends, I needed a refresher from Katie Holmes on how to dress them up.

The Dawson's Creek alum and I share the same taste in Oxford shirts: We prefer them stark white and slightly oversize, much like the variation she debuted at the April 14 screening of Brunello: The Gracious Visionary at New York City's Lincoln Center. Stylist Brie Welch secured Holmes a custom Brunello Cucinelli set for the occasion, featuring the white button-down of my dreams and an unexpectedly luxe skirt.

First, she unbuttoned the long sleeve to reveal one bedazzled strap on her black bralette. Then, the Oxford's box-pleat bodice slipped underneath the high-rise waist of her A-line skirt. Wearing something so understated on top shined a spotlight on the skirt's intricate silver sequins. If she went with an equally-embellished style, the embroidery might've been overlooked.

So, when the mall brand announced its second-ever designer collaboration—this time with Christopher John Rogers—she was first in line at the launch party.

Stylist Brie Welch got first dibs on the 43-piece collection, and went straight for the $59.99 Keyhole Sweater. The ribbed long sleeve riffs on the designer's beloved knits, and features a black-and-white collar, cropped hemline, and a keyhole cut-out at the back. She paired it to the Side Stripe Wide-Leg Jeans, also part of the collaboration. These retail for $64.99, meaning her whole Old Navy x Christopher John Rogers outfit would set you back less than $130.

Fashion features editor Emma Childs rubbed elbows with Holmes at the New York City soirée, right after perusing the collection with Rogers himself. Her selects from the collaboration are "proof that even someone whose style skews more minimal—i.e., Miss Holmes—can find a playful piece from the new Old Navy collection that still works for them," she tells me. That's exactly what Rogers hoped would be the takeaway of the partnership, Childs adds: fun fashion for all.

Holmes's pointy black pumps didn't hail from Posen's latest designer collaboration, but the Christian Louboutins are very her. In fact, she wore a similar pair of black Isabel Marant heels with skinny-fit denim overalls from Old Navy back in 2015 and to a party hosted by the retailer the year before that.

Though her denim collection is well-stocked with designer labels ranging from Maison Margiela to R13, Holmes still can't resist the allure of Old Navy jeans. (Which, same.)

Holmes delivered one last L.A. cool-girl look before her final performance of Henrik Ibsen's play, Hedda Gabler. Her outfit's main character? Franco Sarto's Franco Oakes Mary Janes. Fashion Month is finally over, which for me means two things: First, I’m sharing my final takes on the runway circuit, including dispatches on the frenzy surrounding Chanel’s new collection, all the mystique surrounding The Row, and this season’s surprising (and overdue!) modeling trend. Second, I’m turning over my closet from winter to spring clothes at last. A-listers and I have had the same easy-to-style piece at the front of our minds, and closets, for the gradually warmer days ahead. That item? The white maxi skirt trend.

It doesn’t matter if you’re an avowed minimalist like Zoë Kravitz or you’re following the Katie Holmes template for cool-mom styling: You’ll want an effortless white midi skirt in your spring arsenal. They might seem too pristine to try on the rack, but a few minutes scrolling through celebrity street style can convince you of their staying power and everyday wearability. (No wonder they’ve come back every spring since 2023.) My favorite celeb follows are wearing them right now with button-up cardigans and trenches on the East Coast; out in LA, they’re trying cropped tees and color-block flats.

I now have at least five variations in my own closet, each with a slightly different fit and details (like pleats, lace, or tiered layers). Honestly, I wear the white skirt trend way more than jeans. Here’s how.

How I Style It

Lest you think the white skirt trend is too easy-breezy for work, I’m starting off with a version I’ve worn everywhere from the front rows at Copenhagen and New York Fashion Week to my weekday commutes to MC HQ. The key is balancing the prancing-through-a-field energy of a tiered, pintuck skirt with the more structured top and serious (but still walkable!) flats. Most days, I’ll go for a more classic striped button-down in blue, pink, or green. This week, I broke in an under-$100 version of another spring trend I know I’ll wear for seasons: the shirt with a built-in matching scarf.

That said, my white skirt collection gets the most mileage on the weekends, when I want to be more relaxed but still feel put-together. It’s still a little chilly in New York City, so this outfit brings together a cozy top layer with a skirt and sneakers that can handle 15,000-step errand days. On top, I’ll add a false spring-proof trench coat and a shoulder bag.

The $199 Anastasia Sweater—made from a cashmere and featuring a trending argyle pattern—is brand new for the Spring 2026 season, and comes in two vibrant color combinations. Holmes chose the more maximalist one, dubbed the Harlequin.

The actor paired the multicolor top with black, straight-leg trousers. Even her footwear got the "don't outshine the sweater" memo: The ballet flat enthusiast opted for a glove-like leather pair, also in black. A label-less shoulder bag and square-shaped sunglasses served as Holmes's only accessories.

We haven't seen Holmes wear Boden publicly until now, but the brand's charming catalog of colorful knitwear, preppy prints, and cheeky accessories feel right up her sartorial alley. Plus, celebrities love it. Its basics have ended up in the closets of Jessica Alba, Nina Dobrev, Sydney Sweeney, and even Princess Kate.

On December 2, the Dawson's Creek actor kick-started the festive season at New York City's Chateau Royale. The Greenwich Village hotspot welcomed new and loyal Aligne shoppers, including Holmes in a must-copy holiday look. Her satin selects—both in a Life of a Showgirl-coded orange colorway named Cognac—hailed straight from the New Arrivals section. The $129 Eme Top was made to be worn with the $175 Ari Slip Skirt. Holmes's sleek accessory stack began with a four-figure purse from Loro Piana. The Extra Pocket L27 model in navy blue popped against her sdarker dress. You may recognize its elongated center closure—Ariana Grande, Blackpink's Lisa, and Sofia Richie Grainge own the same silhouette.

Snakeskin pointed-toe boots slithered out from beneath each hem. Contrary to Holmes's bag, they felt so aligned with Fall 2025 runway trends. In fact, Marie Claire's fashion features editor, Emma Childs, caught snakeskin lurking behind every catwalk's corner. "Marni embraced yellow and over-the-knee styles, Khaite kept it scrunchy (since slouchy boots will be popular again), and Schiaparelli selected darker prints and ankle boot silhouettes," she says.

The seasonal selects didn't stop there. Holmes accessorized with her take on the cord necklace trend: a black thread cabled through a gold, jug-shaped pendant. It matched her aviator-style sunglasses, plus the padlock atop her DeMellier crossbody.

Holmes's cord necklace was more minimalist than Jennifer Lawrence or Emma Stone's renditions. Lawrence and Stone prefer oversize necklaces from Sophie Buhai, which retail for upwards of $1,000. The fall 2025 trends just keep coming, giving lace-trimmed dresses or track jackets a run for their money. Struggling to keep up? Strip it back to the classics. That's what Katie Holmes did, in leather pants and a sequin top.

I expected Holmes's latest night out would feature dark denim, riding boots, a rollneck sweater, or all the above. She tapped timeless trends instead at Avra Estiatorio's grand opening, a Greek restaurant on New York's Ninth Avenue.

Holmes built her outfit around a sheer top made entirely of nude sequins. I usually don't break out my holiday shimmer until November, but Holmes is getting a head start. A black blazer kept her warm in the 40° chill. What's more, she tied a beige sweater over her shoulders. It's every fashion girl's favorite way to layer—Kendall Jenner and Jennifer Lawrence included.

Delectable, chocolate brown pants were the unexpected finish for the denim-loving Holmes. However, they're right in line with the styles Zimmermann, Chloé, Fendi, and Tom Ford debuted on their Fall 2025 runways.

Holmes kept her accessories to a minimum, starting with a leather top-handle bag. (Its enveloped sidewalls bare a striking resemblance to Burberry's $3,150 Rocking Horse Tote​, though nothing's confirmed.) Her quintessential ballet flats earned the evening off: She popped on the pointiest kitten heels instead.

From Dior by Jonathan Anderson's hats to Alexander McQueen's distressed corsetry, pirate-inspired style has dropped its anchor in the Spring 2026 circuit. On October 6, the Paris Fashion Week trend reached our shores, by way of Katie Holmes's latest street style look.

Though Holmes's Fashion Month run ended during New York Fashion Week, she's clearly keeping tabs on the runway from afar. Her latest stroll through NYC's West Village looked straight from a Spring 2026 show, starting with a white button-down blouse. She layered it underneath a fuzzy, butter yellow sweater, only letting its pleated collar peek out. Her drawstring pants—purple with lavender pinstripes—were pirate-core to the max. Even their cinched hems mimicked the ruffles of her shirt's collar.

Designed for the high seas or not, Holmes's set would've been incomplete without ballet flats, which appeared to be her Mansur Gavriel pair. She could've gone with the brand's tomato red slip-ons—to match her Métier bag—but the black colorway felt more piratical. Her Métier Private Eye tote, on the other hand, was crimson-colored.

The final piece in Holmes's maritime puzzle? A green bandana. She tied the wrap atop the crown of her head, Zoë Kravitz-style. Her ballet flats and bag—from Manusr Gavriel and Métier, respectively—were both fresh-from-the-vine red. Her $5,250 top-handle tote, named the Private Eye, sold out days after she debuted it on Sept. 17. (Its multi-pocket model is also available in black, navy, and beige, while you await a restock.) In a shocking twist, Holmes's ballet flats—courtesy of celebrity-beloved Mansur Gavriel—are still online for $395.

Nearly every piece in Holmes's outfit incorporated farmer's market energy. Even her vintage leather jacket from Mayle evoked a shine solely replicated by actual fruit. The cropped coat was collarless, apart from gold buttons on either bust. They matched her pendant necklace and hoop earrings, both in yellow gold.

For once, Holmes and the Fall 2025 runways aren't entirely in alignment. Shows from Khaite, Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Dior, Gabriela Hearst, and Chanel all made a case for what fashion features editor Emma Childs calls "Chili Flake." That red tint borders on burgundy and ruby, appearing mostly on outerwear this season.

On September 22, Broadway welcomed back Katie Holmes with open arms. For one night only, Hamilton's Richard Rogers Theatre belonged to a flannel-clad Holmes and her Dawson's Creek cast.

F Cancer assembled the star-studded alumni for a live reading of the pilot episode's script. Judging by everyone's outfits, you'd think they came straight from the Massachusetts port town, specifically Holmes. The actor channeled Joey Potter's tomboy-ish, girl-next-door aesthetic in fall's plaid shirt trend. The designer behind her blue-and-white button-down? It's Tory Burch Resort 2026. Even so, its oversize fit felt aligned with Fall 2025 collections from Calvin Klein, Burberry, and Bally, among others.

Holmes styled the menswear staple with a runway-ready POV by tucking it into navy blue trousers. The formula brought Look 1 from The Row's Spring 2025 runway to mind, when the flannel renaissance originally emerged. A silver grommet-covered belt gave the pants an early-aughts flair, presumably a tribute to her character.

Holmes paused her Joey Potter-inspired pieces there. She elevated her flannel shirt with Tory Burch's signature peep-toe pumps. The $475 heels launched in Spring 2025, making headlines for their slightly-slitted toes. Unfortunately, Holmes missed the New York designer's show. In 2005, Chloé’s Paddington bag was in the crook of every fashion darling’s arm, from Kate Moss and Sienna Miller to Halle Berry and Jennifer Lopez. Cut to 2025, and the east-west style, with its distinctive chunky padlock front and center, has found its way back into the wardrobes of tastemakers, including Katie Holmes, who carries a Paddington on her movie sets, and Dua Lipa, who totes it in Instagram outfit dumps.

This case of It-bag déjà vu comes down to one woman and one woman alone: Chemena Kamali. One of only a handful of women designers at the top level of luxury fashion, she joined Chloé as creative director in 2023, having started her career at the French fashion house as an intern during its Phoebe Philo era. The Chloé Paddington was actually designed by Philo for the Spring 2005 collection. Kamali brought it out of the vault as part of her Fall 2025 show for the brand, with none other than Alexa Chung walking it down the runway.

“As I started working on this collection, I felt that moving forward is just as important as honoring the past,” Kamali said in a press statement. “I thought about how we romanticize the past through an intuitive lens, blending […] what we once loved with what we love today—the memories of bygone eras.”

When reminiscing on Chloé's archive, Kamali knew there were few silhouettes more beloved than its padlocked Paddington.

Kamali’s resissued Paddington adheres to the original silhouette. (If the German designer strayed too far from its Philo-era design, the Chloé cult would riot.) But her redux does come with a few key tweaks: a lighter padlock and hardware, a more spacious shoulder drop, and a secured zip opening to ensure your belongings don’t spill out when carrying the bag as a modern bohème would (effortlessly, without concern for whether your Chapstick rolls out onto the floor).

What also remains is the exact same I-need-it-now effect on shoppers. In a 2009 Vogue article, fashion journalist Sarah Mower reported that “every one of the 8,000 [Philo’s Paddington bags] made in Spring 2005 was spoken for before it reached the store.” Following Chloé’s Fall 2025 show, The RealReal “saw a 48% spike in demand for the bag week over week,” says Noelle Sciacca, the secondhand luxury reseller’s associate director of partnerships.

After months of non-celebrity fashion girls clamoring to buy the new bag on pre-order, Kamali’s take on Chloé’s Paddington bag is ready to shop. Starting on September 24, it'll be available in two sizes—small for $2,290 or medium for $2,750.

The Paddington reintroduces itself with a black-and-white, David Sims-shot campaign starring Kendall Jenner, Aimee Lou Wood, and Meovv's Anna.

“I wanted to capture the Paddington as it lives today, spontaneous, not precious, a bag that has become part of women’s lives, carrying both intimacy and character,": Kamali said, in a statement. "Captured in Paris, Chloé’s hometown, the images have a natural sensuality and ease, while paying homage to the spirit of 1970s French cinema.”

Like Philo, Kamali understands that the enduring allure of Chloé lies in its dynamic understanding of womanhood. “Chloé embodies a unique balance of soft strength, blending natural femininity, sensuality, and lightness with independence and freedom,” Kamali said, in the same press release. “This soft strength is really what I have always been drawn to.”

The Paddington bag is emblematic of this ethos. Girlish yet grunge, rendered in supple grain leather and adorned with chunky hardware, it’s a bag you can take for after-hours drinks with girlfriends or to a café for a 9 a.m. cappuccino ahead of a day of running errands. Wherever you want to go, the free-spirited bag can meet the moment.

Katie Holmes brought the New York Fashion Week festivities from Manhattan an hour north to Tarrytown. On September 18, two days after NYFW ended, she RSVP-ed "yes" to the launch party for Barbour's collaboration with Tuckernuck.

The British outerwear label swapped a sleek sky-rise for Blue Hill Farm, a five-star bed and breakfast. Everything about the invite-only bash screamed autumn, including the decor, the location, and the dress code. (It was literally within walking distance of Sleepy Hollow.) Since Barbour is famous for their London-ready toppers, Holmes obviously styled one of their best-sellers. She went with a black, diamond-quilted jacket, featuring both zip-up and button closures. Its shiny exterior (and $598 price tag) made it slightly more elevated than average barn jackets—they're usually crafted from waxed cotton or canvas. However, the corduroy collar was classic barn jacket-core.

Even in the heart of New York, Holmes's street style has always had a country-ish charm. So, she looked right at home inside the Barbour x Tuckernuck event. The Dawson's Creek alum layered a white T-shirt and a denim button-down underneath her padded coat. Both staples came directly from her personal closet, I presume. Zoom in and you'll see burgundy straps, belonging to her leather purse, atop her shoulder.

Holmes's jeans collection would've thrived in upstate New York. This time, however, she wore black pleated pants. They tapped into fall's wide-leg trouser trend, which Zoë Kravitz and Hailey Bieber already co-signed. Perhaps she's saving her light-wash denim for another day. To finish, Holmes slipped on pointed brown boots.

This time last year, Holmes helped pioneer the barn jacket trend, alongside Bieber, Alexa Chung, and even Martha Stewart. They were inspired by Prada, Loewe, and Alexander McQueen collections during the Spring and Fall 2024 circuits. If anyone can bring the once-Princess Diana essential back for round two—more like three or four—it's Holmes.

Always on board for a matching accessory moment, Holmes chose to fill up her proverbial shopping cart with several of fashion's buzziest food color trends. She grabbed an oversized handbag and her signature shoe style in the same vibrant shade of tomato red. From there, she mixed in a serving of butter yellow for a wholly balanced sartorial meal.

The monochromatic 'fit began with a sold-out top-handle tote from Metier, named the Private Eye. The $5,250 bag had a Hermès Birkin-ish charm to it, from the zip-top closure to the supple leather exterior. A single turn-lock at its center revealed a secret, easy-access pocket.

Holmes's ballet flats were a direct color match to her bag, in all its produce section glory. I suspect they're the Dream Ballerinas from Mansur Gavriel—after all, Holmes is one of the brand's most loyal customers.

Holmes filled in the blanks with several more summery basics. First up: A butter yellow button-down from The Anteros. She gave it the French tuck treatment and cinched a black leather belt around her waist for an additional bit of color contrast. Against her medium-wash jeans, the tri-color ensemble truly popped.

On Sept. 9, she caught everyone's attention with a messy fishtail braid, wide-leg jeans, and the ultimate fall jacket at a Veronica Beard party. On Sept. 12, the Dawson's Creek icon decided to switch up her style with a jaw-dropping red gown for Fforme's Spring/Summer '26 show, paired with matching ballet flats.

To attend Fforme's NYFW show, Holmes—who is styled by Brie Welch—wore the label's bright red Mila Bias Cut Long Sleeve Dress, which retails for $1,895. The stunning gown, created from hammered satin, features a high-neck, long sleeves, and a curved drop-waist.

During our late-August video call, fashion stylist Brie Welch's phone buzzes with an Instagram DM from Katie Holmes. The actress sent her a runway look that caught her eye. (Welch couldn't specify exactly what look or which brand; some secrets need to stay behind the curtain in the celebrity styling business.)

Welch and Holmes have been exchanging screenshots and inspiration since they started working together in 2022. “We both still have these moments where we’re able to fall for things in fashion—the charm of it all hasn't gone away,” says the celebrity stylist and creative consultant. “It's those little things that help create a strong connection when you work with someone. For instance, when I’m styling Katie for a press tour, I can be like, ‘Oh, I remember she liked this idea from a message she sent months ago. Let’s come back to it and include it now.’ There's always an intention behind what she wears — it’s not just whatever from whomever.”

Intentional is the best word to describe Welch’s overall approach. After studying fashion design at Cal State Long Beach, she moved to New York City in 2008, hoping to find a fashion brand with a junior job opening that also shared Welch’s personal values: purposeful, thoughtful creation. She struck out finding such a position and instead took on various odd jobs, from serving at a pizza restaurant to working a nine-to-five in public relations. Later, Welch found a more meaningful path as a fashion director for French lifestyle blogger Garance Doré, where she was responsible for styling the site’s broader fashion content.

After three and a half years of refining her fashion curation skills for Doré, combined with an inherently cool personal style—“I always reach for the most unexpected thing when getting dressed," she explains—Welch dove into freelance styling. With a strong network of fashion friends, she secured work styling editorial spreads for Vogue and Business of Fashion, celebrity clients like Holmes, and brand campaigns for Givenchy and Ferragamo.

Most recently, Welch has become the resident stylist for eBay, where she curates trends, pre-loved wishlists, and shares her passion for—here’s that word again—intentional consumption. “Clothing-wise, I think everything that we want already exists," says Welch. "It's not that we shouldn't have new clothes; of course, new clothes are beautiful and exciting, and circular fashion only exists because we have wonderful designers creating things. But there's a limit to how much we really need to produce.”

Through her partnership with eBay, Welch aims to encourage shoppers to explore the secondhand market first, even when looking for new-season trends or special occasion pieces. “I was the costume designer on the film Happy Hours—written, directed, and starring Katie Holmes—and so much of what I used was vintage from secondhand thrift stores and eBay. It just goes to show you that you can do big things with stuff that already exists,” she says.

Ahead, we discuss the stylist's low-and-slow approach, the unique alchemy behind Holmes’s style, and the items Welch is winning at eBay auctions.

Marie Claire: Can you share a styling tip that can turn a good outfit into a great one?

Brie Welch: What you do with your sleeve is such an underrated styling trick. It sounds silly... but are you going to button your wrists or leave them open? Are you going to push your sleeve up so it scrunches, or fold and roll it? There are so many different ways to style your sleeves that also change the shirt's silhouette.

Silk scarves are also a little accessory that can add a lot of flair. Zoë Kavitz, styled by Danielle [Goldberg], will wear a T-shirt and pants, but she's got a scarf on her head, so it’s like, ‘Wow, she looks so cool.’ Leandra Medine also did a newsletter about tying a scarf as a belt, which became this massive trickle-down moment—I now see at least five girls every day with a scarf around the waist. It's fascinating because they added just one little accessory, which you can buy for $5 or hundreds of dollars at Hermès, and it completely changes their look.

MC: Katie Holmes's style has a certain magic that makes it so appealing to the mainstream. Why do you think that is?

BW: What's interesting about Katie’s style is that she's aspirational, but her looks are attainable. That balance can only come from a certain type of person who both loves fashion and is also quite down to earth. It’s definitely who she is, and it’s also how I approach fashion, which is why we've really bonded.

MC: What are your favorite, holy-grail clothing items?

BW: I actually don’t have any favorites. I'm not a piece person—I don't look at fashion in these, sort of, hierarchical terms of what piece is better than the other. In one instance, my favorite thing I own could be a T-shirt that someone hand-printed and made for me, which has nothing to do with fashion. Or, sometimes, it’s the Khaite boots I've had from their second Fall 2017 season.

MC: What about a go-to brand?

BW: I always come back to Comme des Garçons. But it’s not the fantastical items; it's the stuff that I can wear daily—the blazers, the shirts. It’s not, ‘Oh my God, you have that CDG piece?' It’s more, ‘Oh, who made that?' Which is more of who I am anyway: I'm not a big showy person.

MC: What vintage brands do you think are overdue for a comeback?

Brie: I personally like to search [eBay] for old Alberta Ferretti and Christian Lacroix. Both those brands made a lot of things that are still relevant today. Alberta touched on so many of the boho trends we’re seeing now, and Christian did the Y2K-inspired, weird, bright colors and prints that are everywhere. Specifically, I’d say that old Alberta, now with a new designer (Lorenzo Serafini was appointed creative director in October 2024), would be one to invest in now. These older sleeper brands from Italy, which had their heyday years ago, can really trickle up—we've seen it with Bottega and Loewe.

MC: You guide your clients through getting dressed. But have they taught you any fashion lessons that you've integrated into your own style?

BW: Not so much the way I get dressed, but more of a broader lesson is just to ask for what you want. You can't get what you want unless you're willing to ask for it. It’s a good lesson for all women to know. No one is a mind reader. And it can apply to clothes, too—like, ‘Gosh, I want that new Chloé Paddington bag. How can I manifest it?’

MC: What does the fashion industry need less of?

BW: We need fewer brands creating ‘the perfect shirt.’ I feel like every week I get an email about a new brand that's discovered how to make the ultimate button-up or perfect white T-shirt for a woman. I'm like, What am I missing here? We need brands to be more intentional in what they make—they don’t all have to make 'perfect shirts,' every category, everything. Intentionality is important. Making less stuff and making it better, more well-made—I think customers would ultimately be attracted to that.

MC: We’ve covered fashion. Now, what are you currently watching and listening to?

Brie: I'm going to admit that I'm watching Lost. I never watched it, but recently just decided to dive in. It gives me some weird dreams sometimes, though, so I think I need a break. I also watch The Buccaneers and The Gilded Age. Music-wise, I really like the new Tyler, the Creator album, and I’ve also been listening to a lot of Neil Young.

MC: What about something unrelated to fashion that’s filling your cup?

BW: I watched a documentary about Sally Mann (American photographer), and as a whole, I'm always inspired by artists' personal stories, how they think, and how they got there. It's interesting to see their process, why they decided to use this technique or that, and what their medium is. Real people creating in their real lives is always inspiring to me. It makes me excited.

Ease and simplicity always seem to be top of mind when Katie Holmes is narrowing down her glam ahead of an event, and she's pretty much mastered the art of looking cool without even trying. Case in point, after wearing messy waves while cheering on the athletes at the US Open last week, she stepped out again a few days later wearing the perfect low-key, millennial-beloved hairstyle: a side braid.

The actor made an appearance at Veronica Beard's Icons Party during New York Fashion Week on Sept. 9, and her glam of choice is exactly what comes to mind when I picture what I'd wear during a crisp fall day in the city. For the event, Holmes wore a black turtleneck bodysuit underneath a navy blue blazer and wide leg blue jeans. She opted for a minimal to no makeup look and threw her hair in a fishtail braid that looked slightly undone but chic at the same time.

The side braid appears to be a go-to hairstyle for Holmes, likely because it's a style that's easy to create on your own—not to mention that you can dress it up or down depending on the occasion. Last year, for example, she pulled her medium-length hair and side bangs into a loose braid when she attended a Chanel event in New York City.

The good thing about a fishtail braid is that they're not as hard to recreate as they appear, and they can be done on straight, wavy, or textured hair. Read ahead to shop everything you'll need to get the look at home.

A slew of perks come with holding New York Fashion Week in September. For me, it's the influx of fall fashion. My favorite Fashion Month hobby involves perusing Getty Images for seasonal outfit ideas, all modeled by the city's best-dressed residents.

On Sept. 9, NYFW's unofficial kickoff, Katie Holmes caught my eye on the photo agency's homepage. She'd just emerged from Veronica Beard's invite-only event, looking every bit a Practical Magic character (my ideal aesthetic). Outside New York's Corner Bistro, Holmes posed in wide-leg jeans. I would've expected her to choose an indigo wash, given its popularity among New York It girls like Zoë Kravitz and Emily Ratajkowski. Instead, her belted light-wash denim brought back the '90s.

Holmes tucked the fall top of my dreams into her high-rise bottoms. She layered a mock-neck long-sleeve underneath a cropped collar-less jacket. Ever the pioneer in unexpected color combinations, she contrasted her black shirt with deep navy outerwear.

Holmes's October-ready outfit wouldn't feel complete without black accessories, starting with a patent leather purse. She held the rectangular handbag by its gold chainlink shoulder straps.

The moody color story continued with her footwear, though she surprisingly left her favorite ballet flats at home. The Dawson's Creek alum instead swapped her signature shoes for pointed ankle boots. Last month, Marie Claire's fashion features editor, Emma Childs, flagged the slim silhouette as a rising fall trend. Since then, Jennifer Lawrence, Princess Kate, and now, Holmes have gotten the memo. I suspect they're also suede. If so, Holmes gets double the autumnal points.

Holmes declared Veronica Beard's affair a fall fashion convention once she met up with Natasha Lyonne. Marie Claire's June cover star arrived shortly after Holmes in a food-inspired color craze: chili flake. The leather bomber jacket wasn't quite burgundy, but a "warm, peppery red," according to Childs's runway report. It had a moment in Khaite, Fendi, Dior, Hermès, and Chanel's Fall 2025 lines.

Even before the first Spring/Summer 2026 show, NYFW delivered a major fashion moment. Now that Holmes attended her first fête, she'll likely RSVP "yes" to a runway show or two. She rarely misses an Ulla Johnson presentation, so expect Holmes in the designer's front row come Sept. 14.

When Chloé launched their Kick Sneaker line last November, I predicted a pair would join Katie Holmes's closet in no time. The low-top trainers drew inspiration from "the ballet and boxing worlds," two trends right up Holmes's alley.

On September 8, the $720 ballet sneakers finally made their Holmes debut. While en route to the post office, the New Yorker styled the Cloudy Cream colorway, one of eight Kick Sneaker shades. At first glance, you might confuse their leveled silhouette for Adidas Sambas, which feature the same subtle upper curvature as the Chloé Kicks. However, the inner wedges, recycled soles, and labels atop each tongue single them out.

In true Holmes form, the sneakers weren't her only three-figure pick of the day. She ushered summer's gingham trend into fall with a blouse by Posse. The $320 top looked country-cool with light-wash jeans.

The Chloé Kicks made quite a splash last fall. One month post-launch, Jennifer Lopez wore Holmes's exact colorway with similar wide-leg jeans, a Coach herringbone coat, and a Hermès Kelly bag.

The sneakers felt surprisingly slender for J.Lo. She usually prefers extra-heightened Nikes with both street and studio-friendly details. Nonetheless, the Chloé Kicks were a welcome, ballet-coded break from her typical footwear.

Both Lopez and Holmes pledged allegiance to Chloé decades ago: Lopez with '70s-inspired blouses, and Holmes on the street style scene. The Dawson's Creek alum is especially fond of their trainers, which always walk the line between nostalgic and boho-chic.

She's worn the hand-stitched Nama Sneakers over ten times since 2022, alongside jeans, sweatpants, and even a Chloé poncho dress. The chunky, $975 Namas haven't been spotted since Nov. 2024, when the Chloé Kicks hit the market.

If the Chloé Kicks are anything like the Namas, they'll become Holmes's go-to shoe overnight. What's more, the ballet sneaker craze is staying strong this fall. While the Kicks aren't as pirouette-proof as Rihanna's Puma Speedcats, Holmes will give them their spotlight this season and beyond.

My silk skirts didn't get much street time last fall. This year, Katie Holmes is making sure I won't make the same mistake again, one dose of inspiration at a time.

Around lunchtime on September 4, Holmes soaked up the New York sunshine outside L'Artusi, an Italian hotspot in the West Village. She was photographed, to-go bag in hand, wearing the end-of-summer silk trend. (It's already been co-signed by Zoë Kravitz and Jennifer Lawrence, my favorite A-list New Yorkers.) Zoom in and you'll see her brown knee-length midi featured white polka-dots. Until now, I wasn't sure if summer's most popular pattern would stick around this fall. But,with Holmes's endorsement, it's certainly not going anywhere.

Each elongated toe box featured a monochrome bow, as most maritime silhouettes do.

Holmes was in on the silk trend as early as Nov. 2024, when mine started hibernating for the winter. Before performing in Our Town on Broadway, she styled a slinky maxi skirt with a cashmere sweater from Falconeri. Both pieces were burgundy, one of fall 2024's most sought-after shades. Taking a break from the film, which she is also directing, Holmes was spotted attending the US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on August 29, 2025. For the outing, the actress paired Marni's newest It bag with a checkered silk dress, an oversize leather jacket, and a pair of classic ballet flats.

Holmes appeared to be wearing Silk Laundry's $375 1996 DRESS GRID, with a black leather jacket draped over her shoulders. The Pieces of April star also carried Marni's forthcoming Tulipea Bag, set to be one of fall 2025's It bags. She completed her outfit with A.P.C. Brown Moe Sunglasses, and her beloved Schutz Arissa Flats, which retail for $118.

Back in the day ("the day" being 2010), Katie Holmes hardly went anywhere without her Max Mara Margaux Bag. The top-handle style was the Holmes equivalent of Jennifer Lopez's Hermès Birkin, featuring a similar turn-lock flap closure. However, the now-vintage model has been noticeably absent from her arm since 2011.

Instead of pulling the Margaux out of storage, Holmes debuted Max Mara's worthy successor on August 27. As any celebrity New Yorker does (see: Jennifer Lawrence and Zoë Kravitz), the Dawson's Creek alum took the Whitney Bag 7 out for an off-duty spin. The circa-2015 tote mirrors the rectangular shape of a classic laptop bag. Since then, the Whitney has been re-released in seven different shapes, ranging from the smallest 2 Nano to Holmes's Whitney 7. In May, Max Mara expanded with 13 colorways, celebrating its decade-long legacy. Holmes's Dark Brown version is mere months old.

It wouldn't be a proper Holmes outfit without ballet flats of some sort. This time, she chose what appear to be Schutz's Arissa Flats: square-toe ballerinas topped with leather bows. The $118 shoes are more structured than her typical ballet flats. In the past, Holmes preferred slipper-like styles like her tried-and-true Mansur Gavriel Glove Flats.

The Arissa Flats looked sleek alongside her wide-leg jeans. Though indigo denim is trending this fall, the '90s baby went with a light-wash finish. On top, she wore an oversize gray sweatshirt.

The Whitney bag has been a celebrity staple since its inception. One month post-launch, Gigi Hadid got ahold of the newborn bag, wearing the small 4 model multiple times in 2015. The supermodel was especially fond of the black version, which retails for $2,090 now, but she also owned its limited-edition purple counterpart.

Two years later, it wound up in her sister's closet. At a Max Mara party in 2017, Bella Hadid posed with the larger Whitney 6 in tow. She chose the Natural tan colorway to match her metallic gold suit set. The blazer, bra, and trousers appeared on the Max Mara Fall 2017 runway. But it was Hadid's choice to add the Whitney to the mix. Nowadays, her medium-sized tote rings up for $2,690.

We're currently in the midst of a Whitney renaissance, which began long before Holmes revived it. Starting in May 2025, I started spotting its signature pleats at A-list events.

This year, Nicky Hilton, Alexa Chung, Leslie Bibb, Joey King, and most recently, Laura Dern at the Venice Film Festival, endorsed its comeback—with Max Mara's Whitney front and center.
