I'm blaming Love Story for my obsession with Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. From her signature khaki pants to her headbands, I can't get enough of her chic, minimalist looks. It's gotten to the point where I'm incorporating her favorite pieces into my personal style—the latest Bessette-Kennedy wardrobe staple I'm trying is her favorite denim trend: bootcut jeans.

Bessette-Kennedy was often photographed in a pair of Levi's jeans, specifically the 517s. The style featured a slim fit through the hips with a subtle flare at the knee. Nowadays, the silhouette is on the up-and-up, with It girls like Bella Hadid and Anne Hathaway recently sporting the trend. It was my newfound appreciation for all things CBK, though, that led me to search for the perfect pair.

Although it's been said she liked to buy her jeans vintage, I'm shopping for the look from my favorite denim brands at Nordstrom, Gap, and Madewell. Ahead, I'm sharing all of the styles I have my eye on for spring—here's to adding another style to my CBK-inspired minimalist wardrobe.

I have a deep appreciation of denim. It's gotten to the point where I'm wearing a sweater, jeans, and boots on a near-daily basis. Although my go-to winter outfit formula hasn't failed me yet in looking put-together, it's getting a little old—and I'm blaming my baggy jeans. Oversized denim reached its peak in the style zeitgeist in 2025, so I'm heading back to a time when denim always looked chic: the '90s.

Some of my favorite fashion moments of the '90s revolve around jeans: Kate Moss in a simple striped T-shirt and black boots, and basically anytime Cindy Crawford went to the airport, just to name a few. They are looks that scream "effortless," yet feel polished and intentional. And seeing so many A-listers wear denim trends like cigarette jeans and dark indigo washes in 2026 means I'm on the right track to elevate my wardrobe.

To update my rotation of jeans, I'm going all in on '90s denim trends with the help of my favorite affordable retailers: Gap, J.Crew, and Madewell. Ahead, I've rounded up the '90s-inspired pairs that feel ripped from the decade and are $200 and under.

Long, Straight Jeans

If there's one denim trend that ruled the '90s, it's straight-leg jeans. As the name suggests, the silhouette is defined by a slim, relaxed fit from the hip down to the ankle. What's more, the favored straight jeans of the '90s reached past the ankle, creating an elongated shape. For even more of a leg-lengthening look, take after Kate Moss (the '90s style icon, might I add) and style a straight-leg pair with pointed-toe ankle boots.

Cigarette Jeans

Cigarette jeans, also dubbed "stovepipe" or "mom" jeans, are shaping up to be every fashion insider's go-to in 2026. Similar to straight-leg jeans, the cigarette silhouette features a slender fit and a cylindrical shape, though it tends to cut at or just above the ankle. They are a polished, easygoing choice for anyone looking for a slimmer fit without wearing full-on skinny jeans. They also provide ample opportunity to show off a cute pair of ballet flats.

Bootcut Jeans

If A-listers have any say about it, bootcut jeans are poised for a major comeback this year, and I'm not mad about it. In fact, Meghan Markle made her Sundance debut in a pair just a few days ago. Compared to the bell-bottoms of the '70s, bootcut jeans are slimmer through the hip and thigh and feature a subtler flare that starts at the knee. As you might've guessed, they were made to complement boots, but they look just as good with sandals (as Naomi Campbell proves, above) or sneakers.

Indigo Jeans

Take a look at the decade's best denim moments, and you'll see a sea of indigo washes. The dark wash instantly makes your jeans outfits look put-together and polished, whereas lighter shades read a bit more casual. If you're not ready to give up your wide-leg jeans just yet, try a pair in a deep, dark blue color. No matter what silhouette you go for, the final result will always be elegant.

If I played my cards right the previous 12 months, I don’t necessarily need to start my year with a major closet cleanout. That said, I do make a point to take stock of what’s working, what doesn’t feel like me anymore, and what ended up being more of a microtrend blip than a solid investment. As a fashion editor, I love trying out new looks, but I’ve honed my taste over the years to have a pretty good idea of what’s actually worth the closet space.

For 2026, I ended up tossing a few short-sighted misses, but I’m proud to say a lot of what I loved last year not only still excites me, but will grow to become even more essential. A lot of these trends are still climbing towards their peak, and I’m glad to have some pieces already here at my disposal.

So, what made the cut? In terms of color palette, neutrals that go beyond classic black will be heavily prioritized in the year to come. And don’t worry if you really leaned into butter yellow—for now, you’re totally safe. Matching sets have also proven to be a great investment, as have silk and satin separates that make everyday garb feel fancy in a flash. Plus, I’m betting that two trends that started picking up speed as 2025 wrapped will be everywhere in 2026: track pants styled outside the gym and ridiculously big tote bags. Comfy! Practical! Don’t mind if I do.

Butter Yellow

While a bevy of new color trends are rolling in for 2026 (remind me to talk more about light blue soon, OK?), I’m happy to report that butter yellow won’t be leaving us anytime soon. In fact, with spring just around the corner, it’s about to be as prevalent as ever.

Alo’s Candlelight colorway might just be the most gorgeous shade of yellow I’ve seen to date. Lately, I’ve been layering this cashmere crewneck with a coordinating cardigan around the shoulders for some monochrome goodness.

Non-Black Neutrals

In 2025, I found myself eager to push beyond the comfort zone that an all-black look too easily provided. A simple switch from basic black to chocolatey browns and charcoal grays did wonders for my everyday wardrobe. Throw in some interesting taupes and olives, and, suddenly, neutrals felt as exciting as the rainbow.

Here, I’m wearing an all-bown look featuring this awesome faux jacket from H&M and these brown Abercrombie jeans that haven’t left my legs since I got them—absolutely zero notes.

Matching Sets

Some of my best investments over the last year or so have been co-ords with major mix-and-match-ability. I love wearing a full set together, but the option to break it up and still like the pieces separately is what really guarantees they’ll stand the test of time in your wardrobe.

This grey jacket and trouser combo from Le Bop (ShopBop’s stellar in-house brand I only recently discovered, BTW) has been on repeat. It also plays into my love for non-black neutrals, of course.

Big Totes

I’ve recently been relying hard on my biggest, slouchiest tote bags. Compared to some previous handbag trends, this one is extremely practical, and the commuter in me absolutely loves it.

Speaking of my commute—I can’t tell you how many people have stopped to ask me about the bag I’m wearing above. It’s the Kite Hobo Maxi from Strathberry, and in addition to fitting a ton, it looks like it should cost at least triple what it actually does. The brand’s quality is exceptional.

Silks and Satins

First, it was the bias-cut satin skirt obsession of the late 2010s. Then, we moved on to the satin pant in the early 2020s. In ‘26, silks and satins are still reigning supreme as the best fabrics to elevate simple silhouettes for nights out and otherwise dressy occasions.

Luckily, I’ve been stocking up for a while, although this lacy cami and matching pant combo in navy are a newer addition from Loft that I can’t get enough of. And as a callback to my matching set praise earlier, let me point out that these look great styled separately as well. The satin pants with a cozy navy sweater up top for daytime? Chef’s kiss.

Track Pants

In 2026, I’m really leaning into an ABJ—“Anything But Jeans”—lifestyle. I mean it when I say my ‘fits hit the hardest when I’m not relying on denim.

My go-to at the moment are trackies, perhaps because I have the Winslow pants from Tibi in its iconic crispy nylon material in multiple colors. They have such a unique, slightly exaggerated silhouette that elevates them from mere track pants to a total fashion moment. Here, I styled them with a faux-layered sweater to show how great they look when you explore styling beyond an activewear approach.

I have a confession to make: I think I hate my jeans. After years of accumulating a rotation of must-have denim, I'm feeling a little bored. My signature jeans-sweater-boots outfit formula can only take me so far. So, in 2026, I'm breaking up with denim and exploring what else the world of "fun pants" has to offer.

Turns out there are a lot of non-denim bottom options I haven't yet explored. Take, for instance, track pants: They're the backbone of my airport outfits, and now I feel confident enough to wear them off the plane, too. It Girls are also proving cargo pants, and capris—two styles that have been relegated to the back of my closet since the early aughts—are worth a second glance this winter.

My closet is about to get way more diverse in 2026. Keep scrolling for all the winter pants options I'm eyeing.

Track Pants

The sporty fashion renaissance has continued with quarter-zips, fleece jackets, track jackets, and now, track pants. They're comfortable, casual, and feel '90s-inspired without going overboard.

Leather Pants

Leather pants are basically denim's cooler older sister. They're a night-out staple, but I believe they can (and should!) be worn in the daytime. You can dress them down with a button-down or a tee, or go full leather-on-leather with a matching moto jacket.

Cargo Pants

Late last year, a late-night scrolling session landed me on a pair of olive green cargo balloon pants. I bought them on impulse, and haven't worn them since—but I've recently come around to the idea of these cargo pants being an essential part of my winter wardrobe. After seeing enough styling inspiration, I pulled them out of my closet for outfit testing. Whether I personally end up including them as a must-have in the future is yet to be determined, but one thing is true: Cargos are cool again.

Skirt Trousers

Hear me out: Start styling your skirts over your pants again. No, it won't end up looking like you're on the red carpet for the Hannah Montana premiere in 2006. If you don't want to mix-and-match your perfect combination, brands like Simonett and Helsa both offer chic sets for one-and-done styling.

Soft Trousers

If, in the not-too-distant future, you find yourself yearning for a pair of pants that look like trousers and feel like sweats, remember to thank me. I bought the Gale Pants from Reformation over the holiday break, and have worn them nearly every day since. My collection is on the verge of tripling.

Capri Pants

I hate being wrong, but I'm big enough to admit I was incorrect about the longevity of last summer's capri pants trend. They've bubbled up onto my newsfeed again courtesy of Bella Hadid's recent street style, and I feel like they'll be everywhere on the streets of Copenhagen Fashion Week. Get ahead of their return and shop one of the options I have my eye on.

For those of us who dared to attempt a Hailey Bieber-inspired bob this winter, rest assured there’s a trend to help distract as we work our way through the awkward grow-out stage. Hats are having a moment that extends far beyond the practical uses of keeping warm or shielding one from the sun’s harmful rays. And as a self-described lover of over-accessorizing, I couldn’t be more thrilled.

Headwear was once a staple in every woman’s wardrobe, as necessary as a pair of stockings or a handbag. In the 1920s, you were highly unlikely to see a woman running errands bare-headed. Now, you might reach for a knit beanie when the temperature drops or a straw sunhat on vacation, but it’s not considered a must, not even as a finishing touch to a look. Still, they’ve played a pivotal role in countless iconic style moments (think: Jackie O.’s signature pillbox or Bianca Jagger’s bridal sunhat), and It Girls have slowly been embracing them online and in street style. This is looking to be the year hats come back in a big way, and I’m ready to add a few into my regular rotation.

So, which hats are worth your while? Above all else, go with the styles you feel flatter your face and head shape. Then, pay attention to what realistically complements your existing wardrobe, as well as time of year and temperature in your region. (You might not need or want to wear a cashmere beanie if it’s always sunny and 75°.)

In New York during the winter, I’ve found myself gravitating towards structured wool and felt styles, especially pillbox and fez hats. I got this one from Cos before the holidays, and I love the way it adds a touch of vintage romanticism to days spent bundled up.

I’m also planning to place a large order with Lele Sadoughi; though the brand is known for headbands, I was surprised to find quite the array of wool felt pillbox hats on site. (I’ve already got my hands on the classic black, but the leopard and lavender are both waiting patiently in my cart.)

In a similarly vintage vein, a felted wool cloche is high on my wish list. Think of this as the humble bucket hat’s elevated older sister. It’s a similar shape, but more fitted and structured than floppy, and the brim does little to actually shield from sun. I’m eyeing the camel Madewell pick below, but only time will tell if I can successfully pull this one off.

Knit cloches are a slightly more wearable option I’m seeing a lot of, too. One part bucket hat, one part beanie, all parts cute.

Perhaps the top-trending style of the season is anything with a bit of faux fur or shearling. It’s a good alternative to a furry coat, if that intimidates you. Paired with classic wool outerwear, these hats still give you that luxe winter look—less Abominable Snowman, more après-ski diva. I have this one from Aritzia in multiple colors.

I feel I must call attention to the sportiest hat of the moment: the fitted beanie. On me, it feels too snowboarder, but I swear it can give "Cameron Diaz in an Early 2000s Rom-Com" with the right outfit. If you also feel like the look leans a bit skullcap on you, go for one with a cuffed edge, like this style from Vince.

Historically, it’s been relatively easy to predict how Gen Z will feel about a fashion trend. If Millennials like it, Zoomers won’t. If it originated online and doubles as a quick-to-pick-up persona—a mob wife, an office siren, or insert-whatever-core-comes-next—the digitally-native generation typically embraces it. For a while, it felt like the generation’s top two style priorities were making Millennials mad and curating a digital-first identity. At least they were, until 2026.

“After years of ultra-fast micro-trends, Gen Z is showing fatigue with constant novelty and is increasingly valuing pieces that last—emotionally, stylistically, and materially,” explains Noémie Voyer, fashion lead at trend analytics platform Heuritech.

No longer driven by a knee-jerk rejection of Millennial style and now a grown-up member of the workforce in an unpredictable financial, political, and social reality, Gen Z wants clothes that provide joy and security. “Globally, fashion [in 2026] is less about rigid labels or one defining aesthetic and more about fluid self-expression, mixing personal references depending on mood, context, or community," Voyer says. "And [Gen Z] are the best at playing with that.”

To make sense of where the generation now falls on the fashion landscape, Marie Claire polled two Gen Z fashion creators, a secondhand expert at Depop, and a trend forecaster for their insights. (Full disclosure: I, Emma Childs, MC's fashion features editor, am also a ‘98-born Zoomer.) Ahead, discover the top Gen Z fashion trends for 2026, as well as the specific styles and brands they’re shopping. Across all ages, the findings below are a great lesson in self-expression balanced with functionality.

Old-Soul Sportswear

According to Gen Z, athleisure is dead. Long live athleisure.

In its place comes a more stylized take on sportswear. “Post-pandemic habits remain embedded but are now translated into more polished, intentional silhouettes rather than overt loungewear,” says Voyer. Or, as Ruby Lyn, a Gen Z social media star with a combined audience of over 1.2 million followers, puts it, the generation is still wearing workout wear, but “not in a matching-set kind of way—in a ‘90’s-celeb-grocery-run way.”

In action, the trend looks like athletic essentials paired with tailored, everyday items. (Think: track jackets with denim and striped rugby shirts with kitten heels.) Gen Z is also leading a vintage sportswear revival, "which reflects a taste for comfort, style, and cultural relevance,” says Steve Dool, the senior director of brand and creative at Depop. To quantify it: Searches for "vintage Lululemon" are up 1,689 percent on Depop, as are those for "upcycled jerseys" (up 233 percent), "skiwear" (up 228 percent), and "bike shorts" (up 133 percent).

Modern Uniforms

In 2026, “consistency becomes the new flex,” says Dool. “Amid decision fatigue, economic tension, and digital noise, people are turning to dependable, neutral staples with sharp tailoring, boxy knits, and workwear classics as a way to express taste through repetition rather than constant reinvention.”

Sarahbelle Kim, a Zoomer content creator and buying trainee at Bloomingdale's, sees this specific Gen Z shift as a side effect of the flattening trend cycle. “Things that were once niche have become viral fodder (e.g., Margiela Tabis), and the recycling of aesthetics and the internet's tendency to rapidly tire of them will eventually force us to reckon with what it means to have a personal relationship with style. Functionality in clothing—ample pockets, compartments, etc.—will be appreciated as we go forward, perhaps cutting through some of the noise.”

Expect to see the generation in timeless, easy-to-rewear items, including utility jackets, quarter zips, and button-down shirts they can don to their corporate 9-to-5s, as well as balloon pants that are easy to move in. The H&M Group brand Cos particularly excels here, with Depop searches for it spiking over 696 percent.

Mad Hatter

2026 is the year Gen Z goes all-in on “crazy, funky, junky hats,” to quote The Wizards of Waverly Place, one of the many Disney shows it was raised on. As Voyer notes, hats are low-lift additions with personality and flair, an easy win for a generation hyper-focused on individuality.

The trend forecaster adds that Gen Z is also increasingly reaching for vintage-inspired hats, “as retro and familiar references are used less as irony and more as reassurance in a context of economic, social, and digital instability.”

Kim confirms Voyer’s point by highlighting the pillbox hat trend, part of fashion’s overall “return to ‘50s sensibilities.” Additionally, Lyn endorses paperboy caps, while Voyer adds fur and knit hats in “cute, retro, Wes Anderson-esque shapes” to the list.

2010s Revival

A noticeable shift from its known ire against styles that Millennials feel fondly for, Gen Z has endorsed “the swagalicious return of the 2010s,” as Kim describes it. The generation used to call skinny jeans cringe, but now they’re cool in an irreverent Addison Rae kind of way. (Searches for “skinny jeans” spiked 131 percent on Depop over the last year.)

Dool adds that Ed Hardy, original Hollister pieces (especially those babydoll-style tops that peaked around 2012), and JNCO jorts have become highly sought after on the secondhand platform. Kim also anticipates an “explosion of turquoise, pastel grunge, studded accessories, fringe, chunky heels, and bandage dresses"—all styles that defined the era as well as Kesha and mustache motifs did.

Everyday Ceremony

As the younger generation reckons with real-life responsibilities, it’s leaving behind extreme displays of self-expression for more subtle ones.

“People are dressing purposefully, using bold and tailored pieces to make everyday routines feel special,” says Dool, shouting out specific styles like military jackets, structured blazers, metallic skirts, statement jewelry, and kitten heels.

Lyn expects "more structured basics to also have a moment this year, whether it’s shoulder pads or intentional tapering to accentuate the body, as a fun and easy way to spice up an outfit without doing too much."

Voyer adds “cowl plunge tops” and “cape tops" to that list, noting that Heuirtech has observed that both styles have steadily grown in popularity over the years, particularly among people aged 16 to 25, and will continue to surge in the next 12 months.

Curated Hodgepodge

Sofia Richie Grainge’s flavor of quiet luxury used to have a firm hold on Gen Z, but the less-is-best approach has officially lost its luster. Among her fellow Zoomers, Kim has observed “a fatigue of neutrals and a craving for things that jolt us from the slop" and "people resonating with craftier, playful styles.” She pinpoints intricate textures and embellishments, such as boas, fringe, and tassels, as coming strongly into play. Personally inspired by Dries Van Noten’s Fall 2025 show, with its ornate, colorful tassels as decorative touches, Kim is now wearing her college graduation honor cords as accessories.

Lyn sees this movement towards handmade touches and textiles as a rejection of TikTok’s favorite “clean girl aesthetic”. “I think the idea of being the perfect, productive, Pilates princess is finally being let go this year,” she says. “Don’t get me wrong—if that's your life and it works for you, that’s great. But I appreciate the sentiment that we each have our own method to our madness, and nobody is perfect.”

A windbreaker trend has been brewing since last spring, when luxury brands like Prada, Burberry, and Miu Miu styled weather-proof anoraks with sequin party dresses and micro-minis. It was fashion first introducing the idea that the best windbreaker outfits were those that flirted with a so wrong, it’s so right approach. We were to forget the jacket’s gorpcore associations and play with unexpected pairings instead.

Now, on the cusp of fall 2025, fashion folks have found their contrast of choice for the hard-working windbreaker: A blend of track star meets modern bohème—a woman who worships at the altar of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen and pays for a boutique gym membership (whether she actually goes and gets sweaty is another matter entirely).

The outfit template is unexpected, yes, but ubiquitous all the same. On the hunt for pre-New York Fashion Week outfit inspiration, I recently logged onto Pinterest, and my home page showed me three iterations of the same look: a tech-y windbreaker with a swath of lace peeking under the jacket’s hem and super slouchy, wide-leg trousers.

Capri pants are another popular element in the outfit trend sweeping the fashion circuit. In August, supermodel Elsa Hosk wore a waxy black windbreaker with a mini ivory lace slip, cropped leggings, and mesh Mary Jane flats—a quirky combination I'm now seeing replicated all over, from NYC's sidewalks to Copenhagen street style.

Like most recent, all-consuming trends, the origin of boho-slanted windbreaker outfits points to The Row’s Spring 2025 collection. There, the sisters styled their Jilly Jacket, a $9,500 hooded windbreaker made of black leather, with white wide-leg trousers and suede sneakers. The hem of a white tee and something light and gauzy peered out under the jacket’s drawstring hem, underlying layers that hinted at what the fashion world already knows: The Row woman contains multitudes.

The coveted luxury brand also makes an insulated nylon anorak, named the Althena, that tastemakers are partial to pairing with Leset’s satin trousers or Chloé’s balloon pants that look like Victorian-era bloomers.

On paper, with each piece separated, you wouldn’t think a boho-esque windbreaker outfit would go together—some would say even when it's assembled altogether it still doesn't. But there is a certain coolness to the contrast that makes the styling compelling. Tension is, after all, often the secret ingredient to a great outfit. Take, for instance, the wrong shoe theory, which has inspired thousands of fashion girls to pair riding boots with sheer skirts and kitten heels with track pants.

In the interest of good old-fashioned fashion journalism, I tried the outfit trend myself to see if I, too, could tap into the aura of an on-the-go Olsen twin. Personally, I haven't stopped thinking about this look from Kallmeyer's Pre-Spring 2025 collection: an ivory silk taffeta windbreaker with a liquid-like midi skirt and wrap-around sandals.

2025's Track Suit

No crushed velour needed—all you need to get the tracksuit effect in 2025 is a tech-y nylon jacket and lightweight loose trousers in a coordinating color. Add a pendant necklace to break up the tonal pairing, like Juju Vera's viral shell or something fringed and fun.

Level: Intermediate

With one boho windbreaker outfit under my belt, I felt confident enough to introduce a new challenger into the formula: a transitional fall sock. Using a blush-colored tencel bomber jacket from Exquise (the same brand responsible for last summer's viral Tobie dress) as the base, I added a vintage, lace-panel A-line skirt with lace panels (thrifted in Paris, sorry!), Madewell kitten heels, and baby pink Bobmas socks.

Pedal Pushing

A Dad-like khaki windbreaker and lacy tunic likely don't come first to mind when thinking about how to style capri pants, an already controversial silhouette with residual early-aughts cringe.
