Queen Mary of Denmark and her 15-year-old daughter Princess Josephine proved that mother/daughter dressing never gets old as they stepped out in coordinating outfits ahead of the royal family's annual summer holiday. They joined King Frederik, Crown Prince Christian and Prince Vincent to greet fans in the town of Graasten, and Mary and Josephine embraced pastel blazers and maxi skirts while braving the rain.

The Danish queen opted for shades of blue, pairing a light blue blazer with a navy maxi skirt, a crisp white blouse from M.A.B.E. Apparel and denim Chanel slingback flats. She finished the look with new mother-of-pearl flower earrings by Jennifer Behr and a diamond pendant from Danish jeweler Louise Grønlykke.

Princess Josephine put a Gen Z spin on the outfit, wearing an oversized butter yellow blazer by Ba&Sh Paris with a silky ivory maxi skirt covered in black polka dots. Like her mother, the princess chose slingback flats that matched her blazer, wearing pale yellow shoes by Copenhagen label Apair.

The teen completed her summer vacation outfit with a white top, oversized gold hoop earrings and a long gold necklace. Meanwhile, her father and brothers wore summery sport coats and chinos as they prepared for their summer stay at Graasten Castle.

During their outing, the family met plenty of members of the public, including a furry friend with royal ties. The Danish royals own two border collies, Grace and Coco, and Queen Mary had previously met Coco's father, Eagle, during a 2024 visit to the island of Funen.

Eagle's owner was also there in Graasten on Monday, and all five members of the royal family enthusiastically greeted the border collie, who bears a striking resemblance to their own pup back home. Perhaps Eagle can get his own blazer for their next run-in.

As part of her work with Mary Fonden—The Mary Foundation—Queen Mary makes an annual visit to the LEGO charity in Billund, Denmark to pack backpacks with essentials, clothing, and toys for children living in crisis shelters.

The brightly-colored backpacks and cheerful toys provide a moment of joy to children living in difficult circumstances. Queen Mary was on hand to personally back the backpacks and meet with volunteers. In a chic pair of Gucci glasses, Queen Mary packed stuffed animals, books, and boxes of Duplo into the green backpacks. “The backpack is both a practical aid for the children and an educational tool for the crisis center employees,” The Mary Foundation wrote on Instagram, explaining that volunteers use these toys ”in their dialogue and contact with the children” as play therapy tools.

Queen Mary skipped the royal trouser suits and summer dresses in favor of jeans, a casual blouse, and ballet flats. The Chanel cap-toe slingback flats were made from denim and featured bleach-washed Chanel logos. Queen Mary’s blouse is from Me+Em, who says the “delicate print, lace trims and a lightweight silk-cotton fabric contribute to the feminine aesthetic of this blouse.” Delight jewelry peeked out from the frills of the blouse, adding interest to the outfit.

The New York Knicks are in the NBA Finals, the FIFA World Cup kicks off soon, and my algorithm is unusually sporty. As someone with interests focused more on royals and fashion, rather than team captains and uniforms, it’s nice when the cultural zeitgeist (yay sports!) and my own interests can coexist. Queen Mary of Denmark combined the two when she pulled off a Sporty Spice-worthy outfit for a royal engagement at a sports center, and it’s a mastery of team-supporting style.

Queen Mary was attending the LykkeCup, the final competition of the LykkeLiga, which translates to ‘Happy League.’ According to the LykkeLiga website, the organization is a “joyful international handball community of children and youngsters with cognitive disabilities.” Over 900 children from around Denmark came together for the event, which aims “to contribute to fighting loneliness, breaking down prejudices and promoting health” for these families. The event was full of joy and smiles, and Queen Mary met with players and their families and took part in some of the sporting events.

The Hugo Boss Modern 70s flare jeans were described by the brand as “retro-inspired,” with the wide flare and washed denim giving off a definite vintage vibe. Queen Mary of Denmark knows how to take a style risk, and often tests out trends in her role as Queen of the Danes. The King and Queen of Denmark took a casual royal yacht ride to visit Grenaa Harbor, a coastal town in the center of Denmark. To combat the sea winds, Queen Mary had her hair pulled back with an unexpected twist—literally—in the form of a silk scarf, and my group chat went wild. "I have thought about this bun/scarf multiple times today," one friend declared, while another gushed "love, love, love."

Safe to say, we were obsessed with the scarf bun. More romantic than a slick back bun, but less complicated than a traditional chignon, the scarf bun is the perfect middle ground. “This look is so beautiful,” hairstylist Claire Roberts tells Marie Claire. “It’s the most simple, timeless, and versatile look anyone can create whatever hair type or budget you have.”

Claire Roberts, who runs a bespoke hair service in Buckinghamshire, declares the scarf bun a sign of “the end of the clean girl era,” while showing “a steer towards the French chic hair, where women always look simply elegant.” The style is easy to do, and Roberts says it's “a great way to create that look even if you’re in a hurry, and have dirty day-two/three hair.”

The style is easy to try yourself, since the scarf does a lot of the work and hides any flaws. Roberts says the trick is simply “placing the hair in a tight ponytail at the base of the neck, twisting the ponytail and gripping it” with the scarf. “It looks flawless because the scarf is the main focus,” she says, noting that the scarf will visually break up any inconsistencies in the bun. “The hair doesn’t even have to be clean, in fact if it’s slightly dirty the better because you won’t get frizz or fly aways,” Roberts shares. I love a good day-three hairstyle.

“Whether it’s a Zara scarf on a budget, or Chanel, Hermés, or Aspinal of London, this look is so chic,” Roberts tells us, calling it “the modern day Jackie O head scarf look.” Queen Mary’s scarf bun has a soft vintage vibe, reminiscent of Jackie Onassis’s iconic silk scarf in an updated way. Luckily, there are plenty of tutorial videos on social media to show us how to do it.

Europe's tiaras were out in full force as Sweden’s royal family celebrated King Carl Gustaf XVI’s 80th birthday on Thursday, April 30—even if the country’s future queen isn’t old enough to wear one just yet. Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel’s 14-year-old daughter, Princess Estelle, might have been tiara-less, but she looked elegant in a lavender gown as she joined her family and royals from around the world at the Royal Palace in Stockholm.

Estelle, who is heir to the throne after her mother, wore a bespoke Christer Lindarw dress for the occasion featuring a short-sleeved, beaded overlay and a floor-length purple skirt. One day, she’ll get to wear a tiara of her own like mom Crown Princess Victoria, who wore the dazzling diamond Connaught Tiara for the banquet. For now, Estelle sported a pair of diamond stud earrings with pink gemstone accents.

Victoria also wore a Christer Lindarw design, choosing a one-shouldered gown in trendy cobalt blue.

Lindarw shared a video of Princess Estella and her mother on Instagram, writing, “Huge honor to be able to design Crown Princess Victoria and also Princess Estelle's dresses for the King's 80th birthday gala. 💙👑💙 So grateful to have been entrusted. 🙏🏻. Crown Princess Victoria's sister, Princess Madeleine, wore the same Modern Fringe Tiara she wore on her wedding day, pairing it with a blush colored gown covered in silver beading. Meanwhile, Prince Carl Philip's wife, Princess Sofia, also wore her wedding tiara, topping the convertible style with amethyst stones that coordinated with her magenta ombré gown.

Along with the Swedish royals, a number of other royal families attended the party, including Queen Mary and King Frederik of Denmark, Queen Sofia of Spain, King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, Queen Mathilde and King Philippe of Belgium and Queen Margrethe of Denmark.

Queen Margrethe of Denmark may have abdicated the throne in 2024, but she is still calling the shots in the Danish Royal Family. King Frederik and Queen Mary are the current reigning monarch and consort, but even they bow down to Margrethe’s expectations. The former Queen of the Danes had to give the current Queen Mary an etiquette reminder in front of the crowds during a royal event.

Queen Margrethe marked her 86th birthday on April 16, and celebrated with her son, King Frederik, and daughter-in-law, Queen Mary. They enjoyed a concert from the Royal Life Guards Music Corps outside Fredensborg Palace to mark the occasion. Queen Margrethe’s dog, Tilia, a dachshund, trotted up the steps and received a warm welcome from her owner. When Queen Mary bent down to pet her mother-in-law’s dog, she received a firm correction.

Queen Margrethe quickly informed Queen Mary that she shouldn’t have given the dog any attention. A Danish fan told Hello! that the former monarch told Queen Mary: "Jeg tror ikke det er den rette tid til det,” which translates to "I don't think now is the correct time for that.” Queen Mary quickly stood back up, and while King Frederik laughed at the situation, the current Queen seemed less than enthused by the interaction.

Queen Mary is having an especially difficult week, and her thoughts are undoubtedly elsewhere. Aside from her mother-in-law’s very public telling-off, the Queen is grieving the loss of her beloved father, John Dalgleish Donaldson. Her father died on April 12 in Tasmania, Australia after a period of declining health.

In an emotional Instagram post, The Queen wrote “my heart is heavy, and my thoughts are grey. My beloved father has passed away. But I know that when the grief settles, the memories will brighten my day, and what will remain strongest is love and gratitude for everything he gave me and taught me.”

Queen Mary might be Queen of the Danes, but in her home country of Australia she will always be “our Mary.” Born and raised in Tasmania, Mary Donaldson was a normal Aussie girl before she met the future King of Denmark, then known as Prince Frederick. King Frederick and Queen Mary are currently on a momentous royal visit to Australia, and it is putting the country’s relationship with Mary and Fred into perspective.

On Sunday, King Frederick gave a speech at a state banquet in Canberra, where he said, "for me, Australia has held a very special place in my heart ever since I slipped into that bar and lost it in a conversation that has never ended.” Queen Mary and King Frederick met at the Slip Inn during the 2000 Sydney Olympics, and Mary’s life was forever changed.

While she may be the Queen Consort of Denmark on a global stage, in Australia she is just “Mary,” a beloved, highly revered Australian cultural icon. During their recent visit, King Frederick told a story about their first royal visit to Mary’s home country in 2005. In Sydney, they were speaking to members of the public, and King Frederick recalled “Mary was chatting to some of the people who had shown up to say hello, and I stood next to Mary and I overheard a young boy standing next to his mother asking her, 'Mummy, Mummy, who's that boy next to Mary?'" The ‘boy next to Mary’ was in fact her new husband, the Crown Prince of Denmark.

"That's how it is occasionally, in the eyes of Australia,” King Frederick joked. “I suspect I shall always be the one standing next to Mary,” King Frederick said in his speech, before admitting “this is perfectly okay, I take that very much as a compliment." Queen Mary is incredibly popular in Australia, and this popularity has shown throughout their royal visit to the country, their first since becoming King and Queen in 2024.

Queen Mary took the opportunity to speak to the people of Australia, and let them know how important her Aussie heritage is to her. "In my speech to Frederik on his 50th birthday, which is now some years ago, we're getting close to 60, I said 'Our roots grow throughout our lives'," she said during their royal visit, before remarking "I feel so incredibly privileged to have my roots in both Australia and Denmark."

Princess Kate might love to upcycle her old gowns—a trick from Princess Diana's playbook—but no one does archival fashion like Princess Anne. The 75-year-old royal looked elegant in an ivory dress coat as she arrived at Windsor Castle for the Nigerian state banquet on Wednesday, March 18, and her outfit dates all the way back to the 1960s.

The Princess Royal has a penchant for wearing decades-old coats and dresses, and her appearance at Wednesday night's banquet was no different. As pointed out by my good friend and royal Instagrammer Lauren Parkinson, Anne was wearing a long coat with cutout detail on the sleeves that she wore in 1969. The coat originally had an embellished collar to match the sleeves, but the Princess Royal has since had it altered into a plain, pointed style.

She originally wore the cream-colored coat open, paired with a long gown featuring the same detail as the sleeves underneath—although it's unclear if the Princess Royal wore the dress under her buttoned-up coat this time.

While she wore her hair piled up in a curled style in the '60s, she topped her typical twisted style with the Meander Tiara on Wednesday night. The diadem features diamonds in a Greek key design and was given to Queen Elizabeth by her mother-in-law, Princess Alice.

The petite tiara holds an especially sentimental meaning for Princess Anne's family, as her only daughter, Zara Tindall, wore it for her 2011 wedding to Mike Tindall in Edinburgh.

Princess Anne finished off her look with Queen Mary's City of London choker, a thick pearl and diamond design that was gifted to Anne's great-grandmother, Queen Mary, by the City of London in 1893. It was inherited by Queen Elizabeth, who never wore the dazzling piece, and it remained out of public view until Princess Anne wore it in the early 2000s.

As for the rest of the Royal Family, Princess Kate debuted a green Andrew Gn gown in the color of Nigeria's flag, pairing it with Princess Diana's favorite tiara, Queen Mary's Lover's Knot. And Queen Camilla dazzled in the Belgian Sapphire Tiara and an embroidered ivory gown by one of her favorite designers, Fiona Clare.

King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark are embarking on an extra-special royal tour this week as they visit Mary's homeland of Australia, and they enjoyed a glamorous night in Canberra on Sunday, March 15. Wearing a Grecian-inspired mint green gown that she wore to Australia 15 years ago, Queen Mary looked every inch the royal—but she skipped a tiara in favor of an on-trend brooch in her hair.

The couple met at a Sydney pub during the city's 2000 summer Olympics, and this month, they returned to Australia for the first time as king and queen. Brooches were the hottest trend in menswear at the Oscars on Sunday night, and for their state banquet at Government House in Canberra, Queen Mary leaned into the brooch phenomenon with a favorite piece from jeweler Ole Lynggaard.

The design features gold leaves accented with diamonds, and the Danish queen has worn it as both a brooch and hair ornament to events like King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden’s 70th birthday banquet. She wore her hair down, sweeping it back on one side to show off the brooch and her dangling gold floral earrings.

Queen Mary's Jesper Høvring gown might look familiar to longtime royal watchers because she wore it to an event in Melbourne, Australia in 2011—but this time, she pulled a Princess Kate by updating the dress with a new design element.

The queen borrowed from her brooch's design by adding a sheer lace overlay to the dress, with the fabric featuring gold floral and leaf-themed beading that draped across the bust and down one arm.

This isn't the first time she updated the dreamy mint gown. Queen Mary debuted the style in 2010 at the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden, and it originally was strapless with a lace overlay instead of one-shouldered.

"For me, Australia has held a very special place in my heart ever since I slipped into that bar and lost it in a conversation that has never ended," King Frederik said in a speech at the banquet.

Despite finalizing their divorce in May 1996, Sarah Ferguson and Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor remained extremely close; they even lived together until their eviction from Royal Lodge. Ferguson also maintained a relationship with her mother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth II, and was entrusted with the late monarch's beloved corgis upon her death. However, one royal expert believes the former Duchess of York actually betrayed the former Queen.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams explained, "Betrayal is a truly horrible characteristic. To betray the person to whom one owes loyalty and the institution into which she was welcomed is shameful, but Sarah Ferguson knows no shame."

The expert referenced the recent release of a slew of emails between Ferguson and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein as evidence of the ex-duchess's "shameful" behavior.

"Queen Elizabeth II, a monarch whose rule will go down as one of the finest in our history, was kind to her," Fitzwilliams told the outlet. "We now know that Ferguson's groveling emails to the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein are proof of her culpability and greed."

According to Fitzwilliams, Elizabeth and Sarah were polar opposites in many ways, but that didn't stop the monarch from supporting her daughter-in-law for decades after the divorce.

"The Queen was naturally frugal by nature," Fitzwilliams noted. "Ferguson's extravagances reached bizarre heights time and again, and the palace even issued a statement that they would no longer be paid."

Ferguson publicly shamed the Royal Family by being photographed in an infamous "toe-sucking" clinch with her alleged "financial adviser" John Bryan, the royal expert shared. "[She] made the Royal Family look ridiculous," Fitzwilliams explained.

"She was clearly beyond the pale and a disgrace to the Royal Family," Fitzwilliams claimed to the outlet. "Yet The Queen had a soft spot for her, almost as though she was a mother figure trying to resurrect someone who was clearly utterly irresponsible."

Fitzwilliams also alluded to the former Duchess of York's "amazing ability to bounce back from disasters" and "use her energy and resilience to charm."

Basically, it appears as though, until her death in 2022, Queen Elizabeth II continued to support Ferguson. But as Fitzwilliams has suggested, perhaps the late monarch didn't know the full extent of Ferguson's association with Epstein.

Queen Mary of Denmark is set to make an especially sentimental trip home this March as she heads to her birthplace of Australia with King Frederik on an official state visit. The royal tour will be the first time Mary, who was born in Tasmania, Australia, has visited home as Denmark’s queen, and she’ll be taking part in a range of official engagements, including a special state dinner. While this means royal fans can look forward to a big tiara moment from Queen Mary, there’s one historic piece she won’t be allowed to wear.

As noted by Hello!, Queen Mary will be “forbidden” to bring one set of royal jewels into the country: the Danish Emerald Parure.

Consisting of a tiara, necklace, earrings and brooch, the diamond and emerald set is an “exceptional example of 19th-century royal jewelry,” as Oliver Hobart, jewelry expert and creative director of wholesale jewellers 925E, tells Marie Claire.

“Unlike most royal jewelry, it forms part of the official Crown Jewels, meaning the pieces belong to the Danish state rather than the monarch personally,” Hobart says. “Because of that status, the jewels are required to remain in Denmark and are traditionally kept at Rosenborg Castle when not being worn by the reigning queen.”

This means that the sparkling emerald tiara and its matching jewelry “cannot accompany Queen Mary on overseas visits, even one as personally significant as a state visit to Australia,” Hobart explains.

Although Mary won't be able to wear the diamond and emerald designs, which were commissioned to celebrate Queen Caroline Amalie's silver wedding anniversary in 1840, she has plenty of other dazzling options in the royal vaults.

“For a visit to Australia, several options would make natural choices,” Hobart shares, suggesting that the Pearl Poiré Tiara would “bring both heritage and a softer, luminous look suitable for a state banquet.” The diadem, which looks extremely similar to Princess Diana’s favorite tiara, Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot, features pearls swinging from diamond-encrusted arches.

Hobart suggests pieces from the Danish Ruby Parure as “another strong possibility” for Mary’s trip to Australia, noting the tiara’s “vivid color reads particularly well at evening events.”

“Her diamond wedding tiara could also be a meaningful choice,” the jewelry expert adds. “Gifted by Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik for her 2004 wedding, it carries personal significance and would feel especially fitting for a visit to her home country.”

Fortunately, royal fans won't have long to wait—Queen Mary and King Frederik will arrive in Australia on March 14.

The Danish queen has served as patron of the Danish Psychiatric Foundation for two decades, and she celebrated the organization's 30th anniversary in a navy outfit with pops of sunny yellow. Wearing a navy Red Valentino dress with a pleated skirt and jewel-trimmed collar, Mary viewed an exhibit titled "Elephant in Space," which featured painted elephant sculptures by 30 Danish artists.

The Psychiatric Foundation's event was centered on "talking about the elephant in the room," and Queen Mary coordinated with the colorful sculptures' bold hues with her yellow heels.

Manolo Blahnik's Hangisi pumps feature a 4-inch heel and a crystal buckle detail at the toe, and Mary matched her shoes to her bright yellow YSL clutch.

Queen Mary isn't the only royal to have worn Carrie Bradshaw's famous wedding shoes in a different color. Princess Kate loved the classic pumps so much that she chose to be immortalized in them, with the royal wearing the green Hangisi shoe in a 2022 portrait of the then-Duke and Duchess of Cambridge painted by British artist Jamie Coreth.

Queen Mary may be a regular fixture in Denmark in 2026, but King Frederick's wife was actually born in Hobart in Tasmania, Australia, on February 5, 1972. As a result, royal fans were delighted to discover that Mary will be returning to her homeland next month on an official Danish state visit.

Announcing the news in an Instagram post, the Danish royal family's official account revealed, "Their Majesties The King and Queen will undertake a state visit to Australia from March 14 to March 19, 2026. The Deputy Prime Minister, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, and the Minister for Climate Energy, and Utilities will accompany The King and Queen along with a large business delegation."

"Love our Aussie girl," one commenter wrote on Instagram. "Such a beautiful human." Another fan wrote, "Hooray, Mary is coming home!! It will be wonderful to have her here." Someone else concurred, writing, "Welcome home Queen Mary. You know we love you here in Australia."

At the time, Frederick was in Australia to attend the Olympics, making their chance meeting kismet.

The couple seemingly had an instant connection, and their romance reportedly grew following a long-distance relationship. On May 14, 2004, Mary married Frederick, then just a prince, at Copenhagen Cathedral in Denmark.

"So happy to hear that you are coming to Australia," yet another royal fan commented on the Danish royal family's Instagram post. "From another Aussie gal that married a Dane (although not the royal kind)."

Basically, it seems as though Queen Mary will receive a warm welcome upon her return to Australia in March.

Let's face it, the end of January isn't the ideal time to dress for a formal occasion (take it from someone about to attend a wedding in Michigan). Eveningwear that's at least slightly warm but still chic is tough to find. For Queen Mary of Denmark, she found the perfect combination of elegant and cozy when she attended a state banquet with King Frederik on Wednesday, January 28.

The Danish king and queen just wrapped up a visit to Estonia earlier this week and are now visiting Lithuania, with the couple attending an elegant banquet hosted by the country's president and first lady on Wednesday night. Queen Mary debuted a long-sleeved burgundy gown by Elie Saab for the occasion, with the belted dress including a dramatic cape that sweeps across the front of the design.

She paired the gown with her royal orders and one of her most cherished tiaras, known as the Edwardian Tiara or Diamond Necklace Tiara. The diamond headpiece is unusual for a modern royal collection as she purchased it herself at a 2012 auction, per royal jewelry blog The Court Jeweller.

The tiara came as part of a set including "a pair of later ear screws set with numerous rose and old mine-cut diamonds, circular-cut rubies and spinels, mounted in 14k gold and silver," per The Court Jeweller.

Mary's Edwardian design can also be converted to a necklace, although she typically wears the diamond and ruby piece as a tiara. She used to wear the original diamond drop earrings that came with the set, but had a new, much larger pair created to match the tiara/necklace's design in 2017.

Queen Mary chose the bolder drop earrings for her banquet in Lithuania, finishing off her look with a pair of burgundy suede Gianvito Rossi pumps—a favorite of Princess Kate's, too.

This isn't the first time Mary has worn a tiara this week. Just a day before her elegant evening in Lithuania, the Danish queen attended a state banquet in Estonia while wearing her diamond wedding tiara and a custom navy Prada gown.

While some royal women, like Princess Diana, make their wedding tiaras a part of their wardrobe throughout their lives, others—like Princess Kate—choose not to wear their wedding-day designs again. Queen Mary of Denmark, for one, has gone a different route and altered her antique tiara to make it her own, and she brought the sentimental design back for a state banquet in Estonia on January 27.

Queen Mary and King Frederik married in 2004, and Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik gave a vintage diamond tiara of unknown provenance to their new daughter-in-law. She's worn the piece on numerous occasions since then, opting to pair it with a custom navy Prada gown for Tuesday's banquet.

Jewelry expert Nilesh Rakholia, founder of Abelini, tells Marie Claire that "wedding tiaras are often frozen in time, locked to a single moment." However, in Mary's case, she opted to alter the design to make it more versatile.

"What makes Mary’s different is that she has allowed it to evolve alongside her," Rakholia says. "In 2011, she commissioned alterations so detachable pearls could be added to the fleur-de-lis motifs, along with a row of pearls at the base. That decision is quietly significant.”

For the banquet in Tallinn, Estonia, Queen Mary chose to wear the diamond design in its original form rather than including the newer pearl additions.

Rakholia continues, “By choosing to adapt the tiara rather than preserve it untouched, Mary asserted authorship over her jewelry. It remains a wedding gift, but it is also a living object—shaped by the woman who wears it, not just the moment it commemorates."

Mary and Frederik have weathered some ups and downs in recent years amid infidelity rumors, and Rakholia says that the Danish queen's choice to wear her wedding tiara reflects a "sense of continuity" that "lends the tiara a deeper emotional weight."

"Two decades on, this piece no longer symbolizes a wedding alone," he tells Marie Claire. "It reflects endurance—a marriage that has matured under public scrutiny and responsibility."

King Frederik X of Denmark is marking his second anniversary as monarch alongside his wife, Queen Mary, on January 14, and two years into their reign, Australian-born Mary has proven to be a true "guardian of the royal vaults." Whether it's bringing rare historic tiaras to the public eye or sentimental earrings tied to her husband's family, Queen Mary's jewelry narrative has become "a defining element of her public identity," according to jewelry expert Oliver Hobart.

"From debuting a rose-cut diamond bandeau tiara re-imagined from an 1840 diamond belt to reviving pieces unseen in over a century, she has shown an instinct for activating history with a contemporary sensibility rather than simply wearing it," says Hobart, who serves as creative director at wholesale jeweler 925E.

One such moment was the Danish state visit to Finland in March 2025, when Queen Mary surprised fans by wearing a tiara that had previously never been seen in public. Mary chose Queen Caroline Amalies Italian tiara, a gold headband-style piece from 1820 that's inlaid with colorful cameos.

And in 2025, Queen Mary chose a pair of citrine drop earrings that belonged to Countess Danner, the morganatic wife of King Frederick VII of Denmark, while attending a museum exhibition about the late countess.

"Queen Mary’s style has a clear rhythm: structured tiaras with clean lines, heirloom brooches used with ceremony, and statement earrings that nod to Danish history", Hobart says. "The 165-year-old earrings linked to Countess Danner are a good example: an unexpected choice, but one that shows how she uses jewelry to honor local royal narratives rather than defaulting to purely ‘safe’ diamonds."

Hobart says that such occasions "reveal a queen who treats jewelry as living cultural heritage, a way to bridge royal tradition with her own nuanced, fashion-aware presence on the international stage."

"What sets Queen Mary apart, however, is her instinct for revival," Hobart says. "She is particularly adept at reintroducing archival pieces in ways that feel deliberate rather than nostalgic."

Take the Danish Rose Diamond Bandeau, a new tiara that Mary had commissioned in 2024. The striking yet simple headband design was created with diamonds from a chain belt that was made during the reign of King Christian VIII in 1840, per The Court Jeweller.

At the time, the Danish royal court released a statement reading, "With the rose stone tiara, HM The Queen and the Royal Collection are reliving a centuries-old tradition of reshaping the Danish crown jewels according to the changing needs of the times, while at the same time bringing the rose stone set, which is rarely used today, back to life."

For Queen Mary, the design makes perfect sense, combining tradition with a contemporary flair. As Hobart notes, these pieces "are worn with a sense of ease that makes them feel relevant rather than reverential."

When royal nails come to mind, you probably think of barely-there pinks and nudes, or no nail polish at all. But Princess Josephine of Denmark went for a bolder look in her 15th birthday portraits on Thursday, January 8, revealing a bright blue manicure in new images shared on the royal family's Instagram account.

"Their Royal Highnesses Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine have a birthday and are turning 15 today 🇩🇰" the royal family captioned the post. In the photos, which were taken at Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen, Josephine poses with her twin brother and on her own in a striped blue blouse with ruffled detail.

Per fashion blog UFO No More, the Vanessa Bruno top actually belongs to Queen Mary, and Josephine also borrowed her mother's gold hoop earrings. The teenager's long, royal blue nails coordinated with her blouse, and as a blue manicure aficionado myself, I definitely approve of Gen Z adopting the trend.

Her creative nails give an insight into Josephine's interests, too. The princess—who attends Spir Eferskole boarding school—has a passion for theater and even appeared on a Danish television series in 2024.

Josephine isn't the only royal who's on team bold nails. Princess Eugenie has sported a Union Jack-themed manicure and reindeer-design nails, while Meghan Markle caused a stir with her dark manicure at the 2018 Fashion Awards in London.

King Frederik and Queen Mary’s four children are getting into the Christmas spirit at Amalienborg Palace in Denmark. After last week’s Christmas tree decorating video, Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent, and Princess Josephine created “julekagenhus,” gingerbread houses, in a boys versus girls competition shared on Instagram.

“Are you ready for a little sibling challenge?” Crown Prince Christian asked his younger siblings, as they were divided into two teams. In their private kitchen at Amalienborg Palace, the princes and the princesses were divided by a wood panel so they couldn’t peek at the opposing creations. “You’re not allowed to look at each other’s,” Princess Josephine declared in Danish as the competition began.

Princess Isabella and Princess Josephine worked hard to create a gingerbread house creation from cookies, icing, and doughnuts. The family’s dog, a border collie named Coco, looked on, hoping for a crumb to fall from the immaculate, modern kitchen counters.

Meanwhile, Prince Christian and Prince Vincent’s construction kept falling down, until they magically pulled a beautifully decorated “julekagenhus” from beneath the kitchen counter. When the two teams revealed their creations, Princess Isabella exclaimed in Danish, “Oh come on, why is theirs ten times nicer?” Accusations began to fly, with the elder princess saying “you didn’t make that one!”

Prince Christian and Prince Vincent quickly admitted to cheating, revealing their original crumbling construction. “This was the one Vincent and I made,” Prince Christian shared, “…in the first five minutes, until we gave up.”

With kids and pets in the mix, there's sure to be a few Christmas mishaps when decorating the tree each year, as the Danish royal family demonstrated in a new Instagram Reel on Monday, December 1. King Frederik, Queen Mary and their children Crown Prince Christian, 20, Princess Isabella, 18, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, 14, got into the holiday spirit in Copenhagen, Denmark over the weekend—and their adorable dog joined in the fun.

In their new Reel, the royals hung ornaments and even did a festive dance together at Amalienborg Palace, with one of the family's border collies hanging out by the tree. Crown Prince Christian, who will become king after his father, laid down on the floor to pet the brown-and-white dog in one scene, while Queen Mary played with a dog toy in another.

The family owns two lookalike border collies Grace and Coco, and this isn't the first time one of their dogs have stolen the show at a family occasion. In May, one of the pups ran out on the palace balcony during King Frederik's birthday celebrations, making their family photos all the more memorable.

The family hung personalized balls with their names, one that looked like the palace, and even an ornament shaped like the Sydney Opera House, in honor of Mary's home country of Australia. Princess Isabella and Princess Josephine also joined their dad for a traditional dance, lifting their arms to form a bridge and laughing as the rest of the family climbed a ladder to trim the tree in the background.

And like most families, there was an ornament casualty, with the Reel showing a smashed Christmas ornament on the floor during their festivities.

"Love this the king and queen being a normal family decorating their Christmas tree and having fun even with the dog," one fan commented on the Reel, while another added, "Love the zoom on that broken ornament 😅."

Another Instagram follower added, in part, "They decorate, be silly, dance, love for each other, and doggies with it all. Our royal family just having fun as it should be ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ 🇩🇰 🇩🇰 🎄 🎄 🎄."

This summer, it's been all about the polka dot, with everyone from Princess Charlotte to Princess Eugenie embracing their love of the spotty pattern. And when it comes to fall nail trends, fun, fanciful polka dot manicures are popping up everywhere. No one loves a dot more than Princess Kate, so it's not surprising that one of her style twins, Queen Mary, was recently spotted (pun intended) in an on-trend outfit from royal-favorite brand Me+Em.

White dresses with black polka dots were seen everywhere at Royal Ascot this year, but Queen Mary—who is married to King Frederik of Denmark—took the trend for a spin on the high seas. In a post on the royal couple's official Instagram account, she was pictured wearing a high-necked ivory Me+Em maxi dress covered in black dots as she set sail aboard the Royal Yacht Dannebrog on August 26.

The Danish queen wore the silk style for a reception aboard the yacht, appearing to wear the long-sleeved dress without its matching rosette pin. Queen Mary waved to crowds gathered in the harbor as she draped a white Hugo Boss coat over her shoulders to ward off the evening chill.

The polka dot style wasn't the only Me+Em dress she's worn on the couple's royal yacht tour. Earlier Tuesday, Queen Mary repeated an ivory midi dress by the British label featuring a pale green floral print—a style that's also owned by Princess Anne's daughter, Zara Tindall.

Mary paired the summery style with a cropped navy Prada jacket and a wide-brimmed straw hat before changing into her dotted dress for the evening reception.

And on Thursday, August 28, the Danish queen once again chose a Me+Em dress, wearing a paisley-print style she's worn twice this summer during a stop in Samsø. Like her polka dot dress, this breezy style is also 30 percent off in the brand's sale, and Mary added a khaki-hued sweater blazer and ivory fedora to her look.

The Princess of Wales has been a longtime fan of Me+Em, with the brand focusing on functional and flattering styles that will stand the test of time. Everyone from Princess Anne to Crown Princess Victoria has worn pieces from their royal mothers over the years, and Princess Isabella of Denmark is the latest to take inspiration from her mom's style. The Danish royal family made their annual return to their summer residence, Grästen Palace, on Monday, July 28, and 18-year-old Isabella quite literally followed in her mom's fashion footsteps.

To kick off their summer holiday, Isabella wore the same cap-toed beige and black Chanel ballet flats that Queen Mary has worn for years, including during a state visit to Norway in 2024. And the Danish royals aren't the only ones who can't get enough of the two-toned shoes. Princess Beatrice and Meghan Markle both own the same Chanel shoes, and the Duchess of Sussex also frequently wears Chanel slingbacks in the same colorway.

Princess Isabella paired the Chanel shoes with a black Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress featuring a red poppy pattern, wearing her hair pulled half back to show off a pair of large hoop earrings. Royal dogs have been having quite a moment this year. Queen Camilla and King Charles both welcomed new puppies after The Queen's beloved Jack Russell terrier died, and last week, Prince William and Princess Kate's cocker spaniel, Orla, gave birth to four puppies. But on Monday, May 26, a European dog stepped into the spotlight when the Danish royal family celebrated King Frederik's birthday with a special balcony appearance.

Queen Mary and King Frederik—along with their twins, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, 14, eldest daughter Princess Isabella, 18, and Frederik's mother, Queen Margrethe—appeared on the balcony of Frederik VIII's Palace to mark the occasion. Crown Prince Christian is currently undergoing military training and was unable to attend—but another family member happily filled in for the 19-year-old heir to the throne.

One of Mary and Frederik's lookalike border collies trotted out on the balcony, much to the delight of the royal family. Princess Isabella and Prince Vincent are both seen bending down to pet the dog in the sweet photos from the event, while in one shot, Vincent gets the pup to shake hands. This is the first time one of the royal dogs has ever made a balcony appearance.

While it's unclear which dog it was who joined them, the family owns two female border collies named Grace and Coco. The Danish royals welcomed Grace—who is related to their late dog, Ziggy—into their family in 2017, and she gave birth to two puppies in 2021.

Coco, meanwhile, is Grace's daughter, and Queen Mary noted that it was hard to tell them apart. After meeting Coco's father on a royal engagement last August, she wrote on Instagram, "Last week I met Coco's father Eagle during our visit to Assens. It was a lovely surprise and great to notice how much father and daughter resemble each other."

The royal house of Denmark released three stunning photos to mark Isabella's 18th birthday on Monday, April 21, but a day later, they included a behind-the-scenes snapshot taken by none other than mom Queen Mary—and it showed the princess in an adorably candid moment.

King Frederik and Queen Mary's second child made her tiara debut in her birthday photos this week, wearing a stunning off-the-shoulder orange gown with a turquoise and diamond piece gifted by her grandmother, Queen Margrethe. Isabella wore the Turquoise Daisy Bandeau tiara along with matching earrings once worn by her grandmother, and in a photo the royal family shared on April 22, she included a rather modern accessory to the outfit.

As for Princess Isabella's tiara, it dates back to the late 19th century and was regularly worn by Queen Margrethe—who abdicated the throne to her son, King Frederik (Princess Isabella's father), in January 2024. Whether the former queen ever used a cell phone while wearing a tiara remains unclear, but it's a new era, after all.

Princess Isabella of Denmark is marking a major royal milestone for her 18th birthday. The second child of King Frederik and Queen Mary celebrated her big day on Monday, April 21—and her first-ever tiara is an especially meaningful one.

The princess wore an elegant orange gown for her official birthday portraits, with the Danish royal family releasing three different photos to celebrate the occasion. As is tradition, she received her first tiara as an 18th birthday gift, and the stunning turquoise piece she debuted in the photos has a sweet tie to her grandmother, Queen Margrethe.

Isabella wore the Turquoise Daisy Bandeau for her special moment, a headpiece that was a gift from her grandmother, whose nickname happens to be Daisy. According to the palace, the tiara is crafted "from gold and decorated with 11 rosettes of daisy-like flowers of decreasing sizes, made of turquoise and diamonds."

Queen Margrethe—who abdicated the throne to her son, Frederik, in January 2024—regularly wore the tiara over the years, including during a 2012 state visit with the president of China.

Per the royal family, the turquoise tiara hails from "the late 19th century" and originally was owned by the Swedish royal family until Crown Princess Margareta of Sweden died in 1920. Margareta's daughter, Princess Ingrid, married King Frederik IX of Denmark, and the tiara then was passed down through the Danish royal family.

The delicate bandeau can also be "taken apart and used as a bracelet"—a useful function for a teenage princess. In addition to her new tiara, Isabella wore a pair of turquoise and diamond drop earrings once worn by her grandmother, along with a matching sash which indicates an important honor for the young royal.

For her birthday, Princess Isabella officially became a member of the Order of the Elephant, the most prestigious order of chivalry in Denmark. Pinned to the order's sash is a white enamel elephant accented with diamonds and a portrait of her father, King Frederik.

Princess Isabella also celebrated her birthday with a glamorous party on April 15, joining her parents and siblings Princess Josephine, Prince Vincent and Crown Prince Christian for a gala concert at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen.

As Princess Isabella of Denmark approaches her 18th birthday on April 21, the nation is abuzz about the royal festivities planned for Queen Mary and King Frederik's eldest daughter. According to Hello!, the April 11 birthday celebration in the city of Aarhus—which is set to showcase Denmark's vibrant youth culture—will come with a jaw-dropping budget.

Per Aarhus Municipality, a budget of £32,542 (roughly $43,000) has been set aside for the event, which will be held at Aarhus City Hall. This includes nearly $14,000 for actors and $9,300 "for catering and drinks." According to Hello!, "Princess Isabella will also receive a birthday gift with a value of 10,000 kroner (£1,122), but details of the present will not be revealed until the day."

As for the event itself, the birthday party will spotlight the talents of young Danes in music, food, sports and design. The gathering aims to honor the creativity and innovation of the country's youth, reflecting the princess's own journey into adulthood. Young designers from Aarhus will present a fashion show, with the palace noting that there will be "a focus on sustainability and future materials." In addition, music and dance performances will take place and culinary students will be whipping up a special birthday cake.

Approximately 100 people from local youth and educational organizations will be invited to the bash out of the 300-strong guest list. Per the palace, "another 50 young Aarhusians with companions will get the opportunity to participate in the event via a lottery."

On April 15, a second celebration will take place for the princess at the Royal Theatre's Old Stage in Copenhagen. The event will feature both classical and modern performing arts celebrating Denmark's cultural heritage. More than 1,000 young people from 17 to 24 will have the opportunity to attend, with tickets distributed through a lottery system, and the concert will be broadcast on Danish TV.

Per Tatler, the princess will also receive a special honor for her birthday when she's given the historic Order of the Elephant insignia—the highest honor in the country—from her father King Frederik.

Currently in her final year at Øregård Gymnasium, Princess Isabella is expected to graduate this summer. While the Danish palace has yet to announce her future plans, the teenage royal will surely support her parents—and later her brother Crown Prince Christian when he takes the throne—with her own royal engagements in time.

The Royal Family of Denmark has announced that Queen Mary is currently too sick to undertake any official engagements.

Speaking to Danish publication B.T., the Royal Family's communications department explained (via HOLA!), "Her Majesty The Queen, like many others right now, has become ill, and therefore unfortunately cannot participate in the Heart Association's award ceremony."

Mary subsequently shared her own message about the cancellations on Instagram, writing, "Thank you for your thoughtfulness. What a lovely surprise to receive this bouquet and drawings, even though illness prevented me from participating in the Danish Heart Association's event 'Together for the Heart.' I had been looking forward to presenting the Heart Award together with the heart children Alma and Ellen and to meeting some of the young people living with heart disease. Hopefully we can meet again."

The Queen of Norway was also forced to miss the opening of the National Knowledge Center for Early Intervention and Family Research at the University of Copenhagen and SDU, per HOLA! magazine.

It's currently unclear when Queen Mary will be able to return to public duties, and it's unknown what the royal has been diagnosed with.

The Queen of Denmark recently made headlines by giving Queen Caroline Amalie's 200-year-old tiara, which includes ancient stones, its public debut. Queen Mary chose to wear the incredible tiara at a dinner hosted by Finnish President Alexander Stubb at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki during a state visit to Finland in March 2025.

Per the Danish Royal Family, King Christian VIII, who ruled Denmark from 1839 to 1848, collected the ancient stones while visiting Italy with his wife Queen Caroline Amalie. Between 1819 and 1821, the couple visited Rome and the excavations at Pompeii. When Christian presented the jaw-dropping tiara to his wife, he did so with a note reading, "It is from the summit of the flaming Vesuvius that my heart flies to you. April 24, 1828."

King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark hosted their annual Evening Party for Art and Culture in the Knights' Hall at Christiansborg Castle on Feb. 28. For the special occasion, Queen Mary revealed that she shares a sense of style with Kate Middleton.

In photos and video clips shared on the Danish Royal Family's Instagram account, Queen Mary could be seen wearing a glittering Jenny Packham gown, which Princess Kate has worn more than once. The designer's pink Georgia Sequin-Embellished Gown retails for $4,915, and was worn by the Princess of Wales on two separate occasions in 2023.

In June 2023, Kate stepped out wearing the eye-catching dress for the royal wedding of Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, which took place at Al Husseiniya Palace in Amman, Jordan. She wore the gown once again in December 2023, this time for an evening reception at Buckingham Palace for members of the Diplomatic Corps.

In an Instagram post celebrating Queen Mary's cultural event, the Danish Royal Family explained, "Throughout history, the Royal House has had a tradition of inviting different actors in the society to party at the castle. At the evening parties, guests are invited to dinner as well as entertainment in the Knights' Hall at Christiansborg Castle."

Another post revealed, "After the dinner at the Evening Party for Art and Culture, the Knights' Hall at Christiansborg Castle was transformed into a large dance floor. According to tradition, Les Lanciers were danced, where Their Majesties the King and Queen also participated." The caption continued, "For more than 150 years, Les Lanciers have been danced at Hoffet's parties. To this day, it continues to be a tradition, which is held up to a number of events at the Royal House."

Princess Kate—who is currently in her pantsuit era—has regularly influenced other people's style choices, so much so the phenomenon was dubbed the "Kate effect."

Royal red carpet dressing can feel predictable at times, but Queen Mary proved that a jumpsuit can look just as sophisticated as an evening gown while attending the Crown Prince Couple's Awards in Copenhagen, Denmark on Nov. 5.

The fashion-forward Danish royal joined husband King Frederik on the red carpet, posing in a tuxedo-style Max Mara jumpsuit with slits up the side of each flared leg. The split-leg look was perfect for showing off her colorful Manolos, with Mary rocking the designer's crystal-trimmed Hangisi pump.

Everyone from Kate Middleton to Carrie Bradshaw has rocked the ever-popular Manolo Blahnik shoe, but Mary—who's worn the style on several other occasions— gave the Hangisi a sunny twist with her bright yellow pair.

She gave her black look another pop of color with an embellished yellow Prada clutch and wore a whopper of a yellow gemstone cocktail ring along with shoulder-sweeping statement earrings.

Queen Mary wore her down in a sleek, straight style for the 20th anniversary of their awards program, which honors those in the fields of arts, culture and social work.

Per the Danish royal family's Instagram account, the awards will be renamed in 2025 to reflect Mary and Frederik's new titles as king and queen. Next year, the event will be called the Royal Couple's Awards and will expand to "support social initiatives, art and culture, and communities that bind us together."

If Queen Mary of Denmark isn't on your style radar, you're seriously missing out. While her wardrobe has been compared to Kate Middleton's numerous times over the years, the Danish queen—who took the throne alongside husband King Frederik X in January—wore a dazzling tiara on Tuesday, Oct. 8 that we can't help but point out is very similar to the one made famous by Princess Diana and Princess Kate.

If you're not familiar with the Lover's Knot Tiara by name, you've definitely seen it in photos. Remember Diana's iconic "Elvis" dress with its high-collared jacket covered in pearls? She's wearing the sparkling diamond piece with pearl drops in the pictures from that outing in Hong Kong, and the late royal also wore the tiara to numerous other royal events.

Today, the piece is the most frequently worn tiara by Diana's daughter-in-law, the Princess of Wales, who first stepped out in the sparkler in 2015. In fact, Kate has worn it a whopping 11 times over the years, making only a few deviations from the classic style.

Ironically, the piece's official name is Queen Mary's Lover Knot Tiara, and for Tuesday's banquet at Christiansborg Palace, Queen Mary of Denmark sported the Danish royals' equivalent of the pearl-and-diamond headpiece.

Per royal jewelry blog The Court Jeweller, Mary's tiara is known as the Pearl Poire Tiara and was crafted in 1825 for Princess Louise of Prussia. It was handed down to the princess's granddaughter, Queen Lovisa of Denmark, who then turned it over to the Danish Royal Property Trust upon her death. Since then, Danish queens are the only ones who have worn the historic tiara.

Mary has worn the piece on one other occasion since King Frederik was crowned in January, debuting the pretty pearl style at a state banquet in Oslo this spring.

For her state banquet this week—which was held in honor of a visit from the president of Iceland, Halla Tómasdóttir, and her husband, Björn Skúlason—Australian-born Mary piled on some more diamonds to go with her historic headpiece, choosing a massive rivière necklace and drop earrings.

Jewels aside, Mary made a bold move by choosing to wear separates she's owned for years versus a new evening gown, wearing a tiered Oscar de la Renta navy maxi skirt with a coordinating blue sequined top from Jesper Høvring.

Earlier in the day, Queen Mary re-wore an outfit with a tie to the British monarchy, wearing the same jewel-toned purple coat dress she sported to King Charles III's coronation in May 2023.

This time, she gave the outfit an updated twist for day by pairing the regal look with a chic purple headband and wrapping a cozy gray pashmina around her neck.

Queen Mary of Denmark and her husband King Frederik X visited Greenland in late June and early July, along with two of their children, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine. The trip was filled with exciting events, but one meet-and-greet went awry when Queen Mary was hit by a scooter.

The shocking incident was caught on camera, and has since been widely shared on TikTok. The short video clip, which was re-shared by the account @danish.royals, shows Queen Mary greeting a crowd of people, when a man on a scooter abruptly crashes into her. The queen seems perturbed in the moment, but is able to gather herself seconds later and remains standing throughout.

TikTok user @danish.royals captioned the video, "Queen Mary suffered a minor incident while visiting Greenland when a scooter suddenly collided with her. Luckily it was just a scare, The Queen was fine."

The accident occurred on July 4 in Nuuk, Greenland, and involved a man on a mobility scooter seemingly losing control of the vehicle, via People. Danish publication Ekstra Bladet revealed the driver of the scooter was confronted by royal security guards and claimed, "I do not know what happened."

Royal commentator Kim Bach told the Danish publication that the security team should be criticized for the incident. "It is strange that they are not more vigilant, just because they are in Greenland," they told the publication. They continued, "I know it's not a Ferrari or a Bentley, but still."

Thankfully, no-one was injured during the crash, and the queen continued her official visit of Greenland alongside her family members. The trip took place between June 29 and July 6, and saw the Danish royal family travel on the royal ship Dannebrog between locations, Ekstra Bladet reported.

Prior to her altercation with a scooter, Queen Mary had already been having an extremely eventful year. In January, Queen Margrethe of Denmark announced she would be abdicating the throne after an impressive 52 year reign. She subsequently handed over the role to her son, who was then known as Crown Prince Frederik.

In May, King Frederik and Queen Mary celebrated their twentieth wedding anniversary, and shared a photo of themselves sailing on the royal ship. The pair looked exceedingly relaxed as they posed on deck in matching vests. "In a few hours the Royal Couple will arrive in Oslo and embark on a state visit in Norway, after the Majesties sailed yesterday from Denmark with the Royal Ship Dannebrog," the Danish royal family's Instagram account revealed. "The arrival in the Norwegian capital also happens on a very special day. It's the King and Queen's 20th wedding anniversary."

Recently, the royal mom of four gave the opening address at the Global Fashion Summit in Copenhagen, advocating for a more sustainable fashion industry and significant action to combat the negative, disastrous impact of climate change.

"Our planet is beautiful and fragile and we have a responsibility to protect and preserve it for our children and coming generations,'' Queen Mary said at the time, as reported by The North West Star.

''Let's all imagine...a fashion industry that gives more than it takes from people and planet," she continued.

May 14 marked two decades since the royal couple said I do, and the Danish Royal House shared a new photo of the couple matching in navy vests, Frederik’s arm wrapped around his wife’s shoulder. “In a few hours, the Royal Couple will arrive in Oslo and begin a state visit to Norway, after their Majesties sailed from Denmark yesterday with the Royal Ship Dannebrog,” courtiers captioned the photo on Instagram. “The arrival to the Norwegian capital also happens on a very special day. It’s the King and Queen’s 20th wedding anniversary,” they wrote alongside a heart emoji.

Per People, “The trip to Norway marks the couple’s second state visit in a few days, having kicked off the first official state visit of the new royal reign last week in Sweden,” the outlet reports. Frederik and Mary are traveling abroad to commemorate the close relationships between the Nordic monarchies, a statement said, and the tour will conclude in June and July in the Faroe Islands and Greenland, which are both in the Kingdom of Denmark. 

On the evening of their anniversary, the couple will dress in their finest for a gala dinner at the Royal Palace of Norway. It follows a challenging time for the couple after allegations surfaced last November that then Crown Prince Frederik was having an affair after being photographed with Mexican-born socialite Geneveva Casanova in Madrid, Spain. Casanova denied all allegations of a romantic relationship, and just two months later, Margrethe—the last remaining female monarch globally after the death of Queen Elizabeth in September 2022—stunned the world by announcing her abdication after 52 years on the throne. In doing so, she became the first Danish sovereign to voluntarily abdicate in nearly 900 years.

Frederik and Mary had a chance meeting during the Sydney Olympics in 2000, where Mary Donaldson—then an Australian advertising executive—met “Fred” at the Slip Inn on Sydney’s Darling Harbor. “Something clicked,” Mary later said in a 2005 interview. “It wasn’t the fireworks in the sky or anything like that, but there was a sense of excitement.”

Not long after they met, Mary learned she had just met the Crown Prince of Denmark, heir to the Danish throne. “The first time we met, we shook hands,” Mary said. “I didn’t know he was the prince of Denmark. Half an hour later, someone came up to me and said, ‘Do you know who these people are?’”

Less than four years later, the couple—who dated long distance before getting engaged—were married at Copenhagen Cathedral on May 14, 2004. Per The Daily Mail, “with tears in his eyes at the altar, Frederik, the future King of Denmark, vowed ‘From today, Mary is mine and I am hers. I love her, and I will protect her with all my love.’”

The romance continued at their wedding reception, when Frederik gave a toast to his bride and said “I had only been in Australia two days before our fates were sealed, even though neither of us was aware of it,” he said. “But your radiance shone clearly for me from our very first meeting. Since then I have been blinded by it, and totally dependent on it. The joy and the strength you give me is like the sun in the daytime which, with its radiance, melts all doubts and darkness on earth. And like the moon at night, you shine with a watchful and delicate beam of gentleness, which extinguishes the mischief and deceit used by the symbols of darkness.”

The King and Queen are parents to four children, including Crown Prince Christian, who will inherit the Danish throne someday.

Two weeks after their 40th wedding anniversary, Tipper and Al Gore have announced that they're separating.
