But it actually goes deeper than that—and I absolutely love it. “Really meaningful manicure for weekend 2,” writes Ganzorigt. “Every color is intentionally picked. Inspired by Swag 1&2 album, Canadian Flag, and Brazilian flag.”

Emily Blunt’s Spring Florals

For the Devil Wear’s Prada 2 premiere, it only made sense to reference one its most famous iconic lines. Celebrity nail artist Julie Kandalec was inspired by that and the floral gem manis that have taken over social feeds. “I think they’re so pretty, but for the premiere, we decided on a clear crystal center, with pearls as the flower petals instead of gems,” Kandalec tells Marie Claire. “The pearls lent a more elevated look, perfect for the red carpet.”

She goes on to say that the red base matches Blunt’s red lips (done by celebrity makeup artist Jenn Streicher) and the pearl decals match Blunt’s Mikimoto pearl accessories. So sure, Miranda Priestly may have scoffed at the idea of florals for spring, but that was 20 years ago. “Now, it’s not groundbreaking," says Kandalec. "It’s perfect.”

According to celebrity nail artist Tom Bachik, Selena had one request for her spring mani: choose colors that made her feel happy. “[Angel] has this mix of fierce confidence and emotional sensitivity that inspired us to design a nail that also had a mix of both attitude and softness,” Cotten tells Marie Claire. “Writing her name Angel on the nails scream, ‘I’m confident and no one can f— with me.”

Yes, Coachella is over. But I can still be in that state of mind. I love Addison Rae’s bright cherry red nails. Celebrity nail artist Kim Truong uses a glossy red shade on medium-length, rounded nails, perfect for the pop girlies.

It didn't make its street style debut until April 19, but the early-aughts twist she delivered was worth the wait.

Black is no longer just a winter nail color, and shimmer works all year round. A prime example of the latter would be Selena Gomez's most recent nail look.

Earlier this week, Gomez held a launch event for Rare Beauty's new Warm Wishes Soft Matte Powder Bronzer, which officially went live on Jan. 15. Always one to be on theme, she obviously had to wear a bronze manicure to fit the occasion. Her longtime manicurist, Tom Bachik, shared a photo of the warm brown, shimmery look she wore via Instagram last night, and he detailed the exact tools and products he used to get the look.

According to the caption, Bachik started off by prepping Gomez's nails with a set of tools from Tweezerman. Then, he painted her nails with one coat of a deep brown polish from Aprés called "Sergenti Plains," and followed that with one more coat of "The Sun," a shimmery light brown shade from the brand's Astral collection.

Typically reserved for winter holidays like Christmas and New Year's Eve, the shimmery look is making a huge comeback this winter. Taylor Swift, for example, was recently spotted wearing a silver glitter manicure while out on the town in New York City last month, and shortly after that, Khloé Kardashian shared a close-up Instagram photo of the pink glitter manicure that she kicked off the year with.

Shimmers are pretty unconventional around this time of year (most people tend to lean into more moody hues like black, deep red, and chocolate brown), but shockingly enough, they can work pretty well if you want a nail color that'll give you a pick-me-up and a much-needed break from the doom and gloom of winter. As celebrity manicurist, Natalie Minerva, pointed out when she predicted that shimmer polishes would be some of the most requested this season, you can also wear them with pretty much any color to add some fun and dimension like Bachik did with Selena Gomez's manicure.

From the moment the 83rd Annual Globes red carpet began on Sunday, Jan. 11 until host Nikki Glaser walked onstage for her opening monologue, guests paraded into the Beverly Hilton ready for the cameras. Last weekend's Critics Choice Awards kicked off the year's awards circuit, but the Golden Globe Awards are where we really see celebrities embrace all-out glamour. (Academy Awards voting opens the following morning, after all—nominees know wearing a memorable look can make their case for a nomination.)

At Hollywood's Biggest Party, first-time nominees like Eva Victor and Amy Madigan set out to cement their style legacies in Loewe and Thom Browne, respectively. Debut presenters Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie, of Heated Rivalry fame, turned up the temperature in Giorgio Armani and Saint Laurent. Chanel notched its first Golden Globes under Matthieu Blazy's leadership and landed two looks on this list, for Ayo Edebiri and Selena Gomez. And the night's first winner, Teyana Taylor, made Globes history in the sort of Schiaparelli dress the stage definitely hasn't seen before.

Interim style director Ana Colón correctly predicted the 2026 Golden Globes would be a big night for Matthieu Blazy's Chanel. No one on the Marie Claire team was ready, though, for the way we collectively sighed over Ayo Edebiri's dress from Métiers de Art collection, styled by Danielle Goldberg.

Like us, Edebiri told E! she was blown away by the collection. Unlike us, she got to take the velvet, off-the-shoulder gown off the runway and on to athe red carpet. "It was the most beautiful, cinematic show," she said. "Me and my stylist saw this gown and we were like, 'That's the one.'"

One-half of everyone's favorite (fictional) hockey rivalry arrived at the 2026 Golden Globes early—and made editors grateful they tuned in before the main broadcast.

Heated Rivalry took over pop culture so quickly, star Hudson Williams likely had his pick of designers for his big night. He and stylist Anastasia Walker landed on a slick Giorgio Armani tuxedo jacket (open over a matching cummerbund and shirt, natch) and black trousers. His unbuttoned shirt gave a sneak-peek at his Bvlgari necklace, a sign of the many megawatt fashion partnerships to come for the rising actor.

Sorry, Baby writer and actor Eva Victor used their first Golden Globes nomination to share the debut spotlight with Loewe's newly-minted creative directors, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez. It's hard to pull off red on a red carpet, but, styled by Danielle Goldberg, the chili pepper tone was bright enough to stand out amid a sea of black dresses.

Tessa Thompson wearing Balenciaga

Tessa Thompson's brand of method dressing is more subtle than her Hollywood peers'. To the naked eye, this looks like a second-skin Balenciaga gown comprised of miles of sequins. But according to Thompson, it was her homage to Hedda, the character who earned her a nomination tonight.

"My character, she slinks around throughout the film in a green dress," she told E!. Live and in person, Thompson (and stylist, Karla Welch) let the dress shine underneath beachy waves.

Amy Madigan wearing Thom Browne

Amy Madigan and stylist Andrew Gelwicks are on a custom suiting tear. Last week at the Critics Choice Awards, she took home the Best Supporting Actress trophy in an intricately embroidered Dior suit. Seven days later, she's running it back in a dapper Thom Browne coat (with tails!). Maybe it's too early in the night to say, but it seems to me she's manifesting around win with this all-out tailoring moment. Or, to quote Colón: "She's taking it!"

Connor Storrie wearing Saint Laurent

As promised: your second helping of Heated Rivalry excellence. Connor Storrie isn't here just because, as one team member noted, "his jawline is made for the red carpet." Storrie and stylist James Yardley secured Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello for his debut Golden Globes. In fashion circles, that's nearly as impressive as scoring a hat-trick in the NHL.

Several Marie Claire editors were typing the same Slack message when Selena Gomez arrived on the 2026 Golden Globes red carpet. Specifically, they were typing the same word: "Feathers!" 323 hours of work in Chanel's atelier resulted in this custom gown set with "200 embroidered elements," according to the brand.

A black column silhouette is a red carpet classic, seen at ceremony after ceremony. Topped with those rows of feathers—and Gomez's still-dazzling engagement ring—it's something completely new, thanks to Erin Walsh's styling.

Before Best Supporting Actress winner (and former Marie Claire cover star) Teyana Taylor collected her trophy, she had to call-out her custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture dress. "Wait—the party in the back!" she said, turned around to show the Beverly Hilton ballroom the centerpiece detail: a "silver-rhinestone bijou thong" peeking out from a cut-out at the back of her gown.

Earlier, on the red carpet, Taylor said the Wayman and Micah-styled ensemble looked "expensive." Contrasting the sculpted bodice and long, black train of her gown, her description is right on the money.

Chase Sui Wonders wearing Balenciaga

When she stopped by Marie Claire's Close-Up column beforeThe Studio's official premiere, Chase Sui Wonders told us how much she loves to shop vintage. She and stylist Thomas Carter Phillips didn't go the secondhand route for the 2026 Golden Globes, but they did work in her affinity for style eras past in this stunning Balenciaga gown.

While her day-to-day style can lean '90s-inspired, she harkened back to Old Hollywood in a jewel-tone green strapless number. New creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli has spent the start of his tenure diving back into Cristóbal Balenciaga's archives for heritage silhouettes and tones. The move is a perfect match for Wonders's old-is-new-again approach to the red carpet.

Pluribus star Rhea Seehorn earned her Best Actress in a TV Series – Drama nomination fronting a series where her enemies all think, act, and dress the same. (That is, without any personal style.) On the show and on the 2026 Golden Globes red carpet, the actor prized individuality. She told me this Louis Vuitton dress—crafted from gold brocade in the label's Paris atelier, with tailoring by stylist Jessica Paster—made her feel like a "superhero." She'll share more details in our upcoming edition of The Close-Up. For now, I have to agree that this one looks like it could channel a Golden Globes trophy...or save the world.

The end of Love Island USA season 7 was the start of Olandria Carthen's ascent in fashion. Styling duo the Reismans followed up their star client's recent tour through Golden Globes weekend parties with the main event: a corseted Christian Siriano trumpet gown.

Commentators online have been asking if Carthen is "fashion's next It girl," and this look says an emphatic "yes." From the sculpted tailoring to the eye-popping shade of green and rows of Anabela Chan diamonds, it's the sort of red carpet moment that reads like an arrival.

Almost every year since the first season of Only Murders In the Building aired, Selena Gomez has earned a nomination for Best Actress at the Golden Globes. This is Gomez and Walsh's third Golden Globes red carpet together. It all started in 2024, with a custom Armani Privé asymmetrical ballgown—a surprisingly voluminous choice for someone who's known to love a column dress. Still, its ruby red sheen wasn't too far off from the multi-hyphenate's style at the time.

Gomez's aesthetic underwent a total transformation between then and the next Golden Globes. At the 2025 red carpet, she looked every bit a Disney princess in an off-the-shoulder baby blue satin Prada gown, another custom creation. Even her accessories—pointy pumps, a rhinestone clutch, and Tiffany & Co. diamond necklace—got the Cinderella memo. Extra points for her perfectly-parted bob, sculpted by hair stylist Renato Campora.

Gomez returns to the Golden Globes after her biggest award season run yet. Last year, she RSVP'd "yes" to the BAFTA Film Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Emmy Awards, and even the Academy Awards, promoting Emilia Pérez. Over the weekend, Gomez attended a special screening of the upcoming film starring Amanda Seyfried, The Testament of Ann Lee. She hit the event wearing an off-shoulder, black minidress with opaque black tights and black, patent leather pumps. For her glam, she wore a super-sleek Barbie ponytail with a cat eye, lash extensions, a nude lip, and a manicure featuring a slightly lighter version of her go-to winter nail color.

Gomez's longtime manicurist, Tom Bachik, shared a close-up photo of the singer's nails to Instagram on Dec. 14. In the photo, she's seen wearing short, square-shaped nails painted a deep red color with a slightly orange undertone. According to the caption, Bachik painted her nails using the color "Brickhouse" from Aprés.

Over the last few months, Gomez has been experimenting with handful of winter nail colors ,though it seemed for a while that dark wine red seemed to be her favorite. She wore a shade called "Berry Boudoir" to the Academy Museum Gala back in October, and shortly before that, she wore an earthy red-brown color called "Blood Moon" to Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit. This brick red color, while still a bit earthy and moody, is one of the lightest nail colors she's chosen all winter.

A big part of my job at MC HQ revolves around celebrity style: tracking down exactly what the likes of the Hadids, KarJenners, and Danielle Goldberg girls wear on a daily basis and figuring out how to rework it for a less…red carpet context. Every other week, I’ll drop by your inbox (and later, MarieClaire.com) with the latest on what they’re wearing—and ways I’ve styled similarly A-list-approved pieces beyond the Sushi Park balcony.

I want to get started with sweaters, the category at the front of all the aforementioned ladies’ closets right now. With step-and-repeat season almost wrapped for the year, celebs are changing into their comfy-cozies and offering some casual styling advice along the way. So ahead, I’m breaking down the three best celebrity sweaters of the season: two silhouettes and one It-knit worth trying now. If your sweater collection is already sorted, they’re a great last-minute gift for the stylish pop culture-obsessive in your life, too.

The Rugby Sweater

ICYMI, striped rugby sweaters are having a bit of a moment this winter, both in runway collections (Prada, Celine, et cetera) and in celebrity street style. Kaia Gerber wears hers draped across the shoulders of a plain crewneck; Hailey Bieber and Rihanna prefer cropped versions over low-rise cargos or jeans.

My favorite take has to be Gigi Hadid’s doubling-up of a warm-toned striped rugby with a contrasting striped sweater around her waist. (Can you tell she runs her own knitwear brand?) It’s preppy without going full-on Connecticut country club; a little nostalgic and infinitely easy to wear.

How I Style It

My own rugby sweater styling falls into the same “preppy with a twist” camp. I didn’t already own two complementary striped sweaters in Gigi’s vein—but I did get my paws on one of the best-selling rugby sweaters from her criminally underrated line, Guest in Residence. When I want to go a little dressier than throwing it on over jeans, I’ll layer it with a GWS (Great White Skirt) and a suede boot. I know, I know, it’s December: so I’ve got Heat Tech tights underneath.

Here, I’ve tracked down a few more sweaters I love in various stripes, fits, and price points. Note: a cotton rugby shirt is not the same as a rugby sweater! These all have a more hearty knit to stand up to winter temperatures.

The Crewneck Sweater

Crewnecks are the greatest common denominator of celebrity-approved sweaters and closets worldwide. But I’m not bringing them up because of how good they look with a white T-shirt peeking out from underneath—you know this without an A-lister’s help. I’d instead like to point out how celebs tend to pick out a crewneck when they want to dress down more elevated pieces like a holiday pump and a skirt, or feather-trimmed pants.

How I Style It

I liked the principle of teaming a slouchy crewneck sweater with a dainty slip skirt, but I wanted a bit more texture in the mix. I tapped another Lawrence-favorite knitwear brand, La Ligne, for the Val sweater, to stack over a J.Crew lace-lined slip and an oversized bomber jacket. With knee-high boots, it fit the dress code for my recent visit to the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix paddock. Back home and out to dinner with my husband, I swapped in some slingback heels.

These cozy crewnecks have the same styling-up potential—and yes, they’re great with a tee and jeans, too. (Pro tip: Turn your T-shirt backward for the optimal pop of white underneath the neckline.)

The It-Girl V-Neck Sweater

“It” is not a fashion term I use lightly…but Reformation’s Jadey cashmere V-neck has a celebrity résumé unlike any other. Taylor Swift has worn it at least twice, in two different colors; so has Jessica Alba. When Selena Gomez picks up her frequent flier miles out of LAX, it’s often in her dove grey rendition of the same oversize top.

This is a knit A-listers pick up for the vibes—like an afternoon cuddling up with The Holiday and a Christmas cookie sampler, in sweater form. (The cashmere really is that soft.) Naturally, it’s most often seen in the wild with upmarket sweatpants or leggings and shearling-lined slipper-shoes.

How I Style It

I’m also guilty of ordering this in multiple colors over the years. (With help from my trusty, under-$10 fabric shaver, my first one from four years ago still looks brand-new.) I spend most work-from-home days wearing mine with Leset lounge pants or plain-old Aerie pajama bottoms. Heading into the office, I swap in barrel-leg jeans, coordinating flats, and a sprinkling of my favorite jewelry. I think the other Ref girlies would approve.

An oversize V-neck silhouette isn’t exclusive to just one label, of course. Here are a few alternatives with the same lived-in feel.

If it wasn't for Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez, Arrowhead Stadium would've been completely devoid of home-team wins on December 7. Sure, the Houston Texans defeated the Kansas City Chiefs, but all hope wasn't lost. Travis Kelce's suite served as the backdrop for Swift and Gomez's complementary winter coats.

Sunday evening marked Gomez's debut Chiefs game. In fact, the longtime friends hadn't publicly reunited since Gomez's wedding in late September. (Swifties still aren't over Taylor's Oscar de la Renta wedding guest gown, in all its metallic gold glory.) So, the duo was overdue for a public outing—and a chance to get caught up dressed in designer outerwear.

Swift, for one, sourced Miu Miu—an atelier typically reserved for nights in New York City—for an oversize, bomber-type jacket. The once-$4,600 zip-up sold out months ago, mainly for its stand-up collar, breast pockets, and checkered exterior. Getty Images missed any close-ups of Swift's Miu Miu coat, but knowing her, she paired it with a mini skirt and knee-high boots.

Plaid is certainly the Grammy winner's winter pattern of choice. This time last year, a plaid skirt set from Miu Miu joined Swift at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. In Dec. 2023, she arrived at the Chiefs' Christmas Day game in a matching Hill House mini, which looked preppy alongside a shearling Guest In Residence bomber, Prada block heels, and a Jennifer Behr hair bow. Swift's latest select is no longer shoppable, but Miu Miu offers the same Slate Gray color on other Blouson Jackets.

Meanwhile, Gomez took game day styling cues from her professional WAG friend. (After all, she hasn't been spotted inside a NFL stadium since her Thanksgiving Day halftime performance in 2013.) The Rare Beauty founder pulled off a fitted, shearling-trimmed style in all-black—one of Swift's signature Chiefs-approved shades. Fur only lined the ribbed style's statement collar and cuffs, contrary to the Eras Tour star's full-on Charlotte Simone coat at a Dec. 2024 Chiefs game.

Gomez kept her accessories to a minimum, just like Swift. An effortlessly undone low bun revealed her mixed-metal drop earrings. Her $225,000 marquise engagement ring, on the other hand, was impossible to miss.

Teeth-chattering temps have never stopped Swift and Gomez from serving coat-clad looks together. In Dec. 2023, the two coordinated in ankle-grazing trenches for a trip to NYC's Zero Bond. Swift chose a khaki leather trench from Gant, while Gomez kept it classic in a black The Frankie Shop find. Unlike Swift's rare trench, Gomez's $375 double-breasted design hasn't sold out yet.

Check in on the Chiefs fans in your life—they're likely in post-game mourning. On the bright side, Swift has to bring Gomez back for another match before the season's end. She deserves to watch Kelce and the Chiefs in top form. Plus, Swift and Gomez owe fashion girls-turned-football fans an Arrowhead step-and-repeat.

Selena Gomez is more of a slipperhead than sneakerhead. For every single pair of trainers, she owns five Uggs, ranging from Classic Micros to Mini Boots. But with the addition of rare Dior sneakers, Gomez's collections are finally beginning to even out.

On December 1, with her hair still curled from Sunday's L.A. Lakers game, Gomez reached her step count with Benny Blanco around Beverly Hills. She kept it casual in loungewear, beginning with a slightly oversize crewneck from Alo. Where will 'Only Murders in the Building' season 6 take place?

Only Murders in the Building is headed to jolly old London! Following the Cinda finale cliffhanger, Hulu confirmed that season 6 will film in London as Charles, Oliver, and Mabel unfurl the truth behind Cinda's murder.

While the show briefly pops over to L.A. in season 4, there's a chance that season 6 will be set in London for the majority of its run. Since Cinda's death stretches the definition of "in the building"—Cinda even grasps at the gate in her final moments to make sure that she counts—the trio may only be able to investigate from across the pond. Fans will have to wait and see how much of season 6 will actually take place in the building.

What will 'Only Murders in the Building' season 6 be about?

I have so many questions about season 6 after that cliffhanger. Who is the "royal descendant" who was murdered? How much of Cinda's new podcast, "The Girl With the Curls," did she record before fleeing to the Arconia to, presumably, get help from our trio? Is Cinda herself the girl with the curls, and she made a podcast referring to herself in the third person? Or was she killed while posing as a decoy, and the titular girl is still out there?

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, co-creator John Hoffman shared that, after season 5's Arconia-centered plot, season 6 will center on Cinda as another "origin point" for the trio. It'll also explore the classic detective literature that gave birth to murder-mystery storytelling.

The showrunner told the outlet, "[Season 6] all came together as wanting to look at origins for both the storytelling nature of what is at the source [of the detective genre] through the Agatha Christies and Arthur Conan Doyles and on and on, and on to podcasting today and that line between them, and what that might hold as fertile ground for next season beyond the incredible character that Tina Fey created for us that got this ball rolling."

"With Cinda, we have someone in the lexicon of the show who is the beginning of the legacy for our trio," he explained. "How does that extend further for the legacy of this endeavor of storytelling within this realm of murder mystery? All of that felt steeped in great history for the show and this kind of storytelling. I’m insanely stoked about an extra charge behind the ideas and the writing while also keeping very, very central who this trio is and where they come from, but being able to supercharge the season next year with some really new elements that feel well-timed."

Selena Gomez's Mabel Mora says it herself in Season 5 Episode 3 of Only Murders In the Building: "I'm in a really good spot right now." The same could be said of the podcaster-turned-detective's closet, which delivered a plot twist of its own following last season's finale.

If you've watched the Emmy-winning series since 2021, you likely associate Mabel's outfits with brightly-colored coats, chunky boots, and prints aplenty. Season 5 opens up on a hardly-recognizable Mabel in all-black attire, instantly evoking brow-furrowing expressions from O.G. fans. Yes, she's mourning the mysterious loss of the Arconia's doorman, Lester. Even so, it marks a minimalist shift for the character. Costume designer Dana Covarrubias says it was a "conscious" one.

Before filming begins for another season, Covarrubias revisits the fashion from previous episodes. This time around, she followed the same ritual, except she was even more open-minded toward a fresh direction. "Watching back Season 3 and Season 4, I felt like the palette got away from me a little bit, and I wanted to hone it all in," Covarrubias tells me over Zoom from Hungary, on her next project's secret set.

At the end of Season 4, Mabel (plus, Steve Martin's Charles-Haden Savage and Martin Short's Oliver Putnam), sell the movie rights to their lives. This leaves Mabel with "a good chunk of change," to upgrade clothes borrowed from her aunt. "I was excited to see who she was with money for the first time," Covarrubias says. "She's starting to define her own style in her own voice, versus before, she was [more unsure]."

The key to make Mabel look more "classic and elegant?" Sleek suiting, inspired by the season's major mob boss plot. To recap: The deceased Lester—and his decades-long career at the Arconia—lead our protagonist trio straight to the doorman's top-secret past. They uncover an underground casino, three billionaire suspects, and even Lester's connection to an alleged New York City mobster.

"Mabel is dressing the part," one Godfather-looking suit at a time. "Dealing with these mobsters and billionaires, she's up against all these aggressive people," Covarrubias says. "You could perceive [her suits] as a weapon, because it's her tool to fight these characters."

One of Mabel's strongest "tools" was Episode 4's burgundy satin suit, courtesy of LaPointe. Turns out, the slightly-oversize set—topped with an of-the-moment silky sheen—had been in the making for multiple seasons. "[Show runner] Hoffman wanted to put Selena in a magenta or raspberry for a long time."

At first, Covarrubias believed Mabel should wear a dress to meet with Christoph Waltz, Renée Zellweger, and Logan Lerman, all of whom portray suspicious billionaires tangled in the casino's illegal web. But that "felt too feminine" to confront three (potential) murderers.

A sleek suit "on [the billionaires'] same level" was the clear frontrunner. "I think Mabel is really good at dressing for the occasion," Covarrubias says, a trait served on a silver platter by the LaPointe look. In the character's world, it's a tool to get what she needs.

Mabel's aesthetic reaches peak Godfather mode during a twisted business meeting. She negotiates a podcast deal with Wonderfy (the Only Murders version of Spotify) in a pinstripe suit set from Naked Wardrobe. The black two-piece—its heightened shoulder pads and wide-leg hems front and center—looked right at home inside a New York City skyscraper.

"Dress for the job you want," an age-old fashion adage, inspired Covarrubias's pick. "We wanted to highlight the Boss Lady vibe of her look, because that's ultimately what she's trying to do," the costume designer explains. "She's trying to prove she is qualified, prepared, and successful."

Season 5's "ripped from the headlines" script clearly guided Covarrubias's costuming. In that same vein, Gomez's looks felt accessible and most importantly, "real." The "silliness" of the series doesn't go unnoticed by Covarrubias. In fact, she believes the show's color palettes and patterns became too "cartoony" in recent seasons. "I [prefer] the costumes to be more grounded so the silliness can contrast that."

Covarrubias also wanted Mabel's attire to "foil" that of new penthouse resident, Althea. The contrasting characters—though polar opposites—were childhood friends who've grown apart. Althea's pop star persona, Thé, makes waves in Season 5 for her "bright and crazy" sweaters and skirts. "Thé thinks she knows what's in style, and is doing that to the nth degree," Covarrubias says. If Mabel picks up an understated Veronica Beard vest, Thé will choose a bubbly Rachel Antonoff cardigan.

As one of the busiest protagonists on television, Mabel requires a closet that supports her lifestyle—however chaotic it may be. "We had to dress her for everything," Covarrubias says "A single outfit had to make sense in the lobby, on the ferry, or in her apartment."

Mabel wore her most layered looks in Episode 5, during one of the trio's multi-stop escapades. Covarrubias outfitted her in another Godfather-inspired set, remixed for the girlies. A semi-sheer Acne Studios long-sleeve—starring fall's plaid trend—served as her first layer. Then, a pinstripe waistcoat and pleated pants (both with LouLou de Saison tags) juxtaposed the pattern underneath. A black leather jacket finished her casino-searching outfit.

A few scenes later, Gomez swapped plaid for stripes, by way of a semi-sheer Cordova turtleneck. Its long-sleeves peeked out from underneath a leather dress from Nanushka.

Fans first got a sneak peek of Gomez's Episode 5 look in May, due to photographers surrounding the Manhattan set. Paparazzi captured every angle of the actor's attire, which kickstarted a broader conversation about on-set spoilers. (The Devil Wears Prada 2, also filmed in New York, furthered the discourse.)

Covarrubias knows spoilers aren't going anywhere. It's a risk casts take when filming exterior scenes in big cities. She never lets paparazzi impact her costuming choices. Plus, she says a spoiler can't replace seeing an outfit in its intended scene.

"I do feel a little bit like it's gotten out of a little out of hand, when people are judging [a look] before watching the show," she says. "The costume designer is just one element of the bigger picture. The editing alone does so much for a television show. Every element of design is what should be judged, not [what's] randomly captured."

She and Gomez have put in the work to make Mabel's costumes an onscreen highlight of Only Murders in the Building. When they're filming, the actress will join Covarrubias with coffee around 4 a.m. to trade wardrobing notes. While she gives the costume designer "a generous amount of freedom," Covarrubias says with a smile, "She has her eye on the ball with who Mabel is."

Working together for five seasons straight creates a bond unlike any other. "Selena is so willing to go with whatever we think is right for the character and the scene." They'll discuss it when a piece isn't "fully Mabel." Then there are magic moments when there aren't notes: "Sometimes she won't say anything, and then that's when I know, we nailed it." Such was the case with Mabel's plaid Veronica Beard set in Episode 4.

In the first few seasons, Covarrubias didn't see many similarities between Gomez and Mabel's closets. But as time went on—and their fittings became more frequent—there was "a bit of meshing together of styles." Sophistication comes to mind, whether she's thinking of Gomez or her on-screen alter-ego.

"It's not your mama's sophisticated, though, [her look] is more modern than that," Covarrubias says. Think uncovering evidence in Veronica Beard, Favorite Daughter, or A.L.C. That's the Mabel who, in Season 5, has solved the mystery of curating a must-have wardrobe.
