Cleansers

A great cleanser is the foundation of my skincare routine. I need something that will remove all my makeup and sunscreen, without stripping my skin. From a texture standpoint, I’ve always preferred a foaming formula—it makes me feel like all that gunky residue is truly gone. But I’ve recently been dabbling with cleansing gels, and I have to say I’m pretty into them.

Serums

I’m very picky with serums. The right one makes a world of difference when it comes to redness, while the wrong one is the source of a rash or irritation. I pretty much stick to calming, anti-redness formulas with purslane or aloe vera or hydrating serums with peptides, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid.

Moisturizers

An incredible moisturizer is non-negotiable for me. I prefer formulas that are on the thicker, richer side personally (my skin runs pretty dry). These two are my go-to because they don’t clog my pores and, when my skin is mid-freak-out, they actively calm it instead of burning or stinging upon application.

Sunscreen

Because I’m both super pale, very sensitive, and very rosacea-prone, I typically have more luck and a lot less irritation with a mineral formula. All that means: the SPF reflects the sun’s rays off your skin, whereas a chemical formula absorbs them. These two are lightweight and don’t leave behind a white cast.

Lip Balms

If you were to look at my skin from a year ago, you would see a night-and-day difference. So when I noticed every single one of my favorite perfume reviewers was talking about LORE, a fragrance brand that recently launched at Sephora, I had to get my nose on it.

A little lore behind LORE: The brand aspires to tell stories by translating experiences and locations into scents. One sniff from its initial four fragrances instantly transports you to somewhere new, whether it’s a beach at golden hour or a cabin in the woods. The design of the glass bottle gives me the impression that it's a luxury brand, with each fragrance housed in an opulent, organic-shaped glass bottle, perfect for display. But the best part? Each bottle only costs $88.

At the helm of the brand is a beauty industry dream team: Melanie Bender, former CEO of Rhode; Joe Cloyes and Greg Gonzalez, founders of Youth To The People; and Mazdack Rassi, co-founder of Milk Makeup. What’s more, the team worked with famed perfumer Jérome Epinette, aka the nose behind iconic scents like Byredo Alto Astral and Sol de Janeiro Cheirosa '62, to create LORE fragrances.

I had to see (or should I say, “smell”) for myself if LORE lives up to the social media hype. Below, I dive into each of the four fragrances and give my brutally honest thoughts.

Lovely and a Little Twisted

Have you ever had a dream where everything is rainbows and butterflies, but something just feels just a tad off? That’s the messaging I get behind Lovely and a Little Twisted. Additionally, Bender told the New York Times it’s meant to invoke “Versailles stuck through the looking glass, where you can never quite get it to sit still.”

At first sniff, it’s the loveliest rose scent that’s both creamy and ultra-feminine. I don’t typically go for floral perfumes, but rose combined with candied pistachio and amber creates a warm sweetness that’s downright addicting. Underneath it all, however, is where things get a little twisted (get it?) with notes of patchouli and oud. Those subtle earthy and woody notes provide a cool-girl edge to this floral, milky blend. This is the LORE fragrance that has me stealing sniffs of my wrists all day long.

Disfruta

Allow me to set the scene: You’re out on a Friday night at a swanky new cocktail bar. You’re sipping on a mezcal margarita and wearing a cool going-out outfit. The lights are low, the music’s loud, and the vibes are high. Essentially, Disfruta captures that good time in a bottle.

This blend is a fruity fragrance through and through, but it’s nothing like the sweet, nostalgic scents of your childhood. Disfruta is like your favorite citrus perfume, but all grown up. Its opening of fresh passionfruit pulp adds a zesty sweetness to the heart of smoky mezcal. There’s a note of “ice melting down glass,” and interestingly enough, I do feel an icy freshness whenever I wear this fragrance. When the mood strikes for a unique fruity scent or whenever you just want to feel cool, Disfruta is the scent to reach for.

Somewhere but Nowhere

Somewhere but Nowhere is LORE's ode to Americana, and it certainly shows. It conjures the image of a lumberjack relaxing in a log cabin or even a cowboy working on a ranch—clearly, I find it to be a sexy scent.

Personally, this is the kind of fragrance that I would find irresistible on a partner—one sniff and you immediately want to inhale even deeper. While unisex, I’d say this perfume leans more masculine with its deep, rich blend of cedar, black tea, and cardamom. It doesn’t lean too woody or spicy; instead, it strikes the perfect balance of both. Out of the four LORE fragrances, Somewhere but Nowhere is the most luxurious and complex scent, and for that, I love it.

Sublimity

My favorite things about a beach day include basking in the sun, floating in the ocean, and the scent of a coconut-y sunscreen. Sublimity effectively bottles up all of my happiest memories in the sun.

I find that Sublimity is a coconut-forward fragrance with the warmth of coconut nectar and ylang-ylang that replicates the summer sun. Don’t get me wrong—there’s no mistaking this scent for sunscreen. Thanks to a hint of saltiness and musk, it has a freshness that instantly reminds me of ocean air and sun-kissed skin. Truth be told, Sublimity is summertime in a bottle—it may not have the most unique DNA I’ve smelled in a summery fragrance, but that doesn’t make it any less beautiful.

So, Is LORE Worth the Hype?

It's common for a fragrance brand to have a dud or two in its lineup, but it's exceptionally rare for a brand to have nothing but hits—that's the case with LORE. While not every fragrance fits into my olfactory personality, each one feels like a work of art with complex blends that create a lasting impression.

Just looking at the gorgeous bottles and packaging, you would think these perfumes belong in a department store alongside the likes of Tom Ford, Chanel, and Dior. Instead, a full-size bottle will cost you $88, which may be the most impressive part about LORE. Bender and company were able to create a luxurious olfactory experience and essentially a full fragrance wardrobe that's actually attainable—what's not to love about that?

I begin my stock up with a face wash that resets my skin. Something gentle enough for daily use, but will still get all the makeup, SPF, and any other gunk from the day off. Ah, free samples. Whether it’s snacks while you’re walking around Costco or an extra treat when you’re already buying yourself a treat, who doesn’t love ‘em? As Sephora shoppers know, when you make a purchase through the store’s website, you can choose two samples at checkout. Additionally, if you’re a member of the Beauty Insider Program, you can also cash in your points for other, usually slightly larger, items. Plus, you get your choice from one of several mini products as a free birthday gift each year. Yeah, they know how to keep shoppers coming back.

A look through Sephora’s list of free sample options and the Rewards Bazaar—if you’re using points—shows mini perfumes, mini mascaras, and tiny packets of foundation and concealer. There’s even an ice roller, a little candle, and a page of sparkly nail art stickers. But I urge you to resist getting any of these. There are only two things that you should get for your free samples or with your Beauty Insider rewards. And the next time you pack for a trip, you’ll be glad you did.

They’re on every packing list

Whether you travel frequently to exciting international locales or make a couple trips each year to visit family, you probably pack cleanser and moisturizer every time. Regardless how extensive your skincare routine, these two are pretty standard. In fact, they might be your whole skincare routine, especially while traveling.

They’re also two items that you likely purchase in larger sizes, which means you either have to buy mini versions specifically for traveling or decant your larger products into smaller containers. No more! All you need to do is choose cleanser and moisturizer as your samples or rewards items whenever you have the chance. (There is one caveat that we’ll get to.)

Samples are small and easy to pack

These samples are the perfect size for traveling, because they barely take up any space—and if you’re flying, they’re almost always less than the 3.4 ounce liquid limit.

To really make things convenient, keep your samples in a pouch with any other travel-specific toiletries (mini toothpaste? teeny pack of antacids?), so you can just grab it when it’s time to pack. If you’re a frequent Sephora shopper, soon you’ll have a little collection of minis ready to go.

These aren’t (necessarily) the “actives” of your skincare routine

If you’re thinking, I only use my preferred brand, thank you very much, hey, that’s fair. But, when it comes to cleansing and moisturizing, some people might be less picky since these often don’t contain the powerful, specific active ingredients of a serum or a toner. (Examples of exceptions would be something like an acne-fighting cleanser or a moisturizer that contains retinol.) So,it’s easier to switch up cleaners and moisturizers, at least for the duration of a trip.

You don’t actually need that other stuff

Samples are fun, but they’re really a way for a brand to get you to buy more products in the future. That free little bottle of hair serum? The full size costs $60, so, ya know, tread carefully. But aside from potentially becoming obsessed with what is actually a $30 lip balm, it’s really easy to choose items that will just sit in your bathroom drawer forever until you realize that you’re never actually going to try mascara primer, because your five-minute makeup routine cannot be afforded a sixth minute.

What will you always need? A travel-sized cleanser and moisturizer that you didn’t have to pay for! (Of course, through doing this you might become a fan of the sample cleanser or moisturizer, but that’s the risk you take.)

Okay, fine, there is an exception

The exception to this rule is if you see a product you already use that would also be handy to travel with. If your go-to shampoo is in the Rewards Bazaar or available as the birthday gift, here’s your chance to get a travel-sized one. See your conditioner in the free sample options? Go for it. The idea is just to use your checkout freebies to stockpile travel items that won’t go to waste, will save you money, and will keep your travel toiletry bag light.

This works for other stores, too

Sephora is known to give out free samples, but this same “hack” can apply to other stores, as well. Ulta, for instance, has a large selection of “free gifts with purchase” that generally require a minimum amount of money be spent on a certain brand. Still, it’s worth checking out what they have available if you’re making an order. Like Sephora, Ulta also offers a birthday gift, so that’s a chance to stock up, too.

If a product is good good, I have no problem spending a little extra. A retinol cream that smooths and evens my skin tone? Worth it. A moisturizer packed with barrier-supporting ingredients that leaves my complexion looking plump and bouncy? Absolutely. And an SPF that blends like butter and leaves behind the prettiest sheen? Sold. But here's a little secret from someone who tests beauty products for a living: some of my all-time favorites—the ones I reach for during my everyday morning routine—are under $50 at Sephora.

Yes, luxury skincare often lives up to the hype (and the price tag), but there are so many under-the-radar finds that cost less than your lunch and still rival their high-end counterparts. Take fragrance, for example. Most cult-favorite perfumes will run you $200 plus, easy. But Sephora has a surprisingly great selection of travel sizes, solid fragrances, and rollerballs that let me test-drive luxe scents without committing to the splurge.

Bobbi Brown's Crushed Lip Color is my favorite no-makeup staple, as is the Merit Shade Slick Gelée Sheer Tinted Lip Oil, which makes for an easy red lip this holiday season. Oh—and the Laniege tinted lip balm that took the internet by storm is also on sale.

Fashion Features Emma Childs' favorite lipstick—Clinique's Almost Lipstick—is also here. She calls the cult-famous "Black Honey" shade a "cult classic that delivers every time." It sits alongside the Makeup Forever lip liner that Hailey Bieber (and I) swear by.

IGK's Expensive Hi-Shine Gloss Treatment came courtesy of Fashion Editor Lauren Tappan, who tested it this summer and named it one of Marie Claire's top hair glosses, bar none. The easiest way to elevate your makeup game is with a bold eyeshadow. At least, that's what I learned when I borrowed Urban Decay 24/7 Moondust Glittery Eyeshadow in the shade "Space Cowboy" from my sister while we got ready for Charli XCX and Troye Sivan's Sweat Tour in October. The brand's 24/7 Glide-On Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil has also been a longtime favorite in my routine and is one of the best eyeliners for the waterline.

LeSavage dubbed Tower 28's tubing mascara one of the best waterproof formulas. "I cried four times while reporting on Taylor Swift at the Eras Tour for Marie Claire (What can I say? "All Too Well" hits different)," she says. "No one around me could tell, though."

Our team is pretty fragrance-obsessed, so the recommendations came pouring in. Brooke Knappenberger, Marie Claire's Associate Commerce Editor, called KAYALI's Vanilla 28 Eau De Parfum one of her favorite vanilla scents. "I’m a vanilla perfume girl through and through, and despite how many I have in my collection, this is the one I turn to the most," she says.

Baxter, on the other hand, prefers an underrated pick: The Maker's Lover Eau De Parfum. "I never receive more compliments on a scent than when I’m wearing this bad boy," she says. "It’s lush and woody, with vibrant top notes of fig and jasmine and a sensual oud base."
