I’ve got linen pants and breezy tops for touristy excursions, barely-there bikinis and raffia tote bags for moments by the shore, and crochet cover-ups that’ll easily transition from poolside hangouts to casual lunches. I’ve also got my eye on more elevated pieces, like floaty maxi dresses and sleek leather sandals that’ll rise to any nighttime occasion.

As the home of an internationally renowned art fair, Basel in Switzerland attracts contemporary art fans every year. Unsurprisingly, the city is visually alluring, not to mention rich in history, particularly as it shares borders with both France and Germany. I only spent three nights in the city and wished I'd stayed for longer. (Learn from my mistake!)

Easily reached by train or plane, Basel is an ideal stop on any European vacation, or for tourists who enjoy a slower pace of travel. From storybook hotels to gluten-free McDonald's and delectable local cuisine, Basel offered everything I needed for my European getaway.

Where to Stay

To say that Grand Hôtel Les Trois Rois—part of The Leading Hotels of the World—collection is a Basel institution is an understatement. Situated on the Rhine, the hotel is rich in history—a history carefully preserved by its owners to elevate the luxe nature of the 5-star property.

When you ascend the steps of the Les Trois Rois, the hotel's grand lobby sparkles thanks to multiple glittering chandeliers, conjuring a dose of the "storybook magic" mentioned on the venue's website—a claim I can confirm is 100 percent accurate.

Notably, the hotel has its own florist—Fleurs Des Rois—located in the heart of Basel. It supplies the hotel's fresh flower arrangements, which provides the perfect Instagram photo op for even casual visitors to the lobby.

Other features include the architecturally impressive cigar lounge The Council, a library featuring antique stained glass windows, and Bar Les Trois Rois, a space equipped with leather armchairs overlooking the Rhine. Basically, you won't want to leave the building.

Alternatively, based in Basel's Marktplatz, or market square, Hotel Märthof's romantic exterior echoes the vibes of the city's Altstadt, or Old Town. With suites offering balconies and a rooftop terrace, the 4-star venue puts guests in the center of the action and is well-connected to tram lines.

If Hotel Märthof's exterior hints at Basel's rich history, its rooms and suites offer an artistic twist with decor that's both stylishly retro and futuristic. Comfort is key, with many rooms featuring freestanding bathtubs and double vanities, along with balconies or views of the surrounding area.

Where to Eat

Les Trois Rois provides guests with several dining options, including the world-renowned Cheval Blanc by Peter Knogl, which combines French haute cuisine with Mediterranean and Asian influences and has been awarded three Michelin stars. Needless to say, booking is advised.

Hotel guests can enjoy breakfast in the Brasserie, which offers cooked options along with an extravagant buffet—and, yes, self-serve caviar is available. We had dinner overlooking the Rhine, with impeccable service and incredibly informed staff members who provide the perfect wine pairings and accommodate allergy needs.

With its pink velvet seating and purple velvet booths, and offering food and cocktails, Banks is Les Trois Rois's modern conversion of a former financial building.

The hotel also offers an afternoon tea, with a seasonally changing menu, which can be eaten on a terrace overlooking the Rhine. And, as previously mentioned, McDonald's in Switzerland offers a gluten-free menu—a rarity for the franchise—so if you need a fast food fix that's allergen-free, this is your sign to head to Basel.

Meanwhile, at Hotel Märthof, breakfast is served in Bohemia, where visitors can also enjoy a snack or a meal, along with the restaurant's extensive cocktail menu. Positioned on Basel's Marktplatz, outdoor seating allows guests to enjoy the busy ambience of the outdoor terrace, whether they're sampling an espresso or stopping for lunch.

Plus, the hotel's rooftop terrace has incredible views of Basel and is only accessible to hotel residents.

What to Do

As a disabled person, I struggle to navigate crowded cities and touristy destinations. I was lucky enough to take my Rollz Motion Rollator with me on the trip; the ingenious walker wheelchair combo made it easy to switch between walking and sitting, depending on my energy levels. Notably, Basel never felt overwhelming. I enjoyed walking along the Rhine and exploring the city's Old Town without feeling rushed.

Basel's Rathaus—also known as the Town Hall—is one of the city's centerpieces. Its striking red facade and intricate frescoes are impossible to resist, and visitors can enjoy tours of the impressive building.

Seijaku—also known as the Place of Serenity—is an unexpected retreat in the center of Basel, where visitors can enjoy a range of wellbeing treatments, or simply soak in the atmosphere.

There's so much to see in the city, which blends its historic Old Town with modern architecture; seasonal events draw big crowds throughout the year. Basler Fasnacht, for example, is Switzerland's biggest festival, taking place in February and March annually and featuring a huge array of performers and participants.

While there are several museums in the city, Kunstmuseum Basel—described as the oldest public art collection in the world—curates a plethora of diverse exhibitions, while collating artistic works from throughout history.

Shop Travel Essentials

When you go on vacation, you tend to throw at least a few of your favorite pieces into your suitcase. Of course, you want to be comfortable and pack sensible clothes, depending on your destination—but you also want to bring your go-to outfit formulas and beloved garments so you can feel confident on any occasion and be ready for any photo opp. When the airline loses your luggage, however, that plan goes out the window, and you have to figure out how to make do.

That’s exactly what I had to do when I traveled to the Balearic Islands in Spain for the first time in June. Thanks to a mishap with my layover from Madrid to Mallorca, my bag stayed on the mainland while I traveled to Palma, Mallorca. Of the Balearic Islands, Mallorca has a reputation for falling somewhere between Ibiza and Menorca—meaning it has cities known for their 13th-century history and arts scenes, as well as sprawling mountains and picturesque beaches. So, it’s safe to say that I was bummed that the swimsuits I hoped to throw on as soon as I landed and the sundresses I intended to keep cool in while exploring Palma or on my scheduled Riva Yacht cruise were stuck in my lost bag.

Thankfully, my lodging, Hotel de Mar Gran Meliá—a five-star hotel that’s among the Leading Hotels of the World and just celebrated its 70th anniversary—was super accommodating. It’s actually because of the hotel’s wonderful management team that I got my bag back after two days of it being stuck in Madrid, and they arranged for me to go shopping to pick up a few things. After all, I had very little with me, save for a backpack with the books I planned to read on the beach and my purse with a few personal items and toiletries.

There were a few products that helped me stay well-dressed and enjoy my stay even with the stress of lost luggage on my mind. And let’s be real: How could I not still enjoy my vacation? Hotel de Mar is located on the seafront and features a luxury spa; I was eating extremely fresh Mallorcan cuisine, as the island relies heavily on its own agriculture, and I essentially woke up in a Mediterranean paradise. Turkey holds a very special place in my heart—I got engaged there on my first trip in 2023 and I recently had the chance to visit again with my best friend. It was just as fantastic as I remembered—if not better. There are many reasons to put Turkey at the top of your must-go list: the incredible Mediterranean-meets-Middle Eastern cuisine, the something-for-everyone landscapes of sweeping coastal seaside towns, busy metropolises that straddle two continents, and underground cities carved into volcanic rock, and of course, the living, breathing thousand-year-old history of Byzantine, Roman, and Ottoman empires. But perhaps one of the best reasons to book a trip is the legendary spa treatments.

You may have heard of Turkey for the wave of medical tourism (hair loss transplant anyone?) or perhaps some World Cup buzz. But the culture of beauty and wellness has been intertwined into the very fabric of Turkey from the beginning. It's the home of the centuries-old bathing ritual called the Turkish bath, natural mineral-rich thermal waters, world-famous botanicals like roses (a town called Isparta, for example, produces 60% of the world's rose oil), and cutting-edge aesthetic treatments.

There is so much to discover—along the Turkish Riviera in Bodrum there's a spa resort so fantastic that you don't even need to leave the property; in the bustling city of Istanbul, Turkish baths, facial hotspots, and salons galore that are reason enough to return again and again. Read ahead for my personal guide to Turkey's best beauty destinations.

Best Spa and Wellness Resort

Maxx Wellbeing at Maxx Royal Bodrum

If you're lusting after a Slim Aarrons getaway—complete with crystalline blue water, catch-of-the-day lunches, and postcard-worthy views of the Aegean—there's no better place than Maxx Royal Bodrum. Right on the Turkish Riviera, glamorous doesn't even begin to cover it: guests flutter by in shimmering Missoni kaftans, a bottle of Veuve and a generous platter of juicy, fresh fruit is delivered to your room around 5p.m. as a post-beach-pre-dinner treat, and you're assigned an "assistant" from the second you arrive who makes sure you don't lift a finger to book a dinner reservation at one of the property's many delicious restaurants (there's ultra fine dining like Spanish steakhouse Lẽna, Caviar Kaspia, and Wolfgang Puck's Spago, as well as beachside bungalow Casa Sol, Seavore, with the freshest seafood you've ever had, and more) or schedule a spa treatment. Truly, they even escort you anywhere on property in golf carts so you don't have to walk. It's my favorite kind of spa and wellness retreat—the kind where your time feels relaxing, abundant, and restorative instead of restrictive.

The spa echos that sentiment which was important to the spa director—the team wanted the treatments reflect the overall vibe of the resort. It's a spa for people who still want to enjoy a beachside rosé with lunch or stay up a little too late dancing and eating and singing, but still want high-performance body treatments or holistic facials or longevity consults. The 5,750 square meter compound is pure heaven and has everything you could dream of. There's an impressively large swimming pool, state-of-the-art gym, and hydrotherapy circuit (more on that below). And the treatment list is extensive: there's massages and facials, yes, but also reflexology, pressotherapy (for lymphatic drainage), classic hammam rituals, shirodhara, a Zerobody cryo float pod, a Nuvola warm floatation and saltwater flotation. I particularly loved the facial and pairing the cryo cold float with the Nuvola warm float for a total recharge. Regardless of how you spend your spa time, I guarantee you'll feel more rested, relaxed, and rejuvenated when you leave.

Best Turkish Bath

Zeyrek Çinili Hamam

If you looked up the definition of luxury spa in the dictionary, you'd find a picture of Zeyrek Çinili Hamam. The 500-year old historic hammam (it reopened in 2023 after an extensive restoration project that took 13 years to complete) is tucked right in Istanbul's old town among ancient cisterns and mosques. You have not truly lived until you've experienced a traditional Turkish bath and there is no better place to do it than Zeyrek. My friend and I both opted for "The Refresh" treatment. It's a multi-step body treatment that starts with a chilled cup of sherbet (like a rose tea) before you strip down and move into the marble hot room to begin. You pour hot water all over your body a few times (truly a rinse and repeat) before your hammam guide begins scrubbing every inch of you down rigorously with a textured kese glove. It's followed with a hydrating mineral-rich clay mask that nourishes your skin. Then you move to the marble slab where they pour a frothy cloud of soap all over your body before a relaxing massage, leaving you loose-limbed and quiet-minded. There's something softly ceremonial and restorative about the experience—there's a level of a care and intimacy you receive from a total stranger that's truly transformative.

When you're finally returning back to this astral plane, you can't skip the fantastic museum showcasing the history of the hammam, including artifacts recovered during the restoration. And don’t miss the Byzantine cistern next door, which hosts rotating contemporary art exhibitions a must-see experience!

Best Hydrotherapy Circuit

Raffles Istanbul

I don't think it's possible to have a bad experience at a Raffles hotel and the Raffles Istanbul is no exception. It's primely located close to Zorlu Center, a luxury shopping mall (Prada! Burberry!) where you can do some serious sartorial damage, so it's ideal for the fashion lovers. From the huge, sumptuous suites with picturesque views of the entire city to personal butler you can text anytime, everything about the property is luxurious. A modern, sleek sensibility and exceptional service (our waiter at breakfast brought us local Turkish delicacies and offered us tips of things to do and see) already make it a fantastic stay—before you even get to the spa. The spa is the dreamiest and has one of the most gorgeous hydrotherapy circuits I've seen and if you're a guest (which, you absolutely should be) you can enjoy it whenever you'd like. Even when full booked, I rarely ran into other guests while doing my sauna-steam-cold plunge-whirlpool circuit which made it feel especially intimate and luxe. You should definitely indulge in more treatments at the spa if timing allows—the facials are to die for, but there's also a jasmine and rose body wrap, massages, and the combined hammam and massage treatment called the Anatolian Grace Hamam Journey that gives you the best of both worlds: a 60 minute exfoliating, soothing, softening hammam experience (with a honey body mask) before 60 more minutes of the most nourishing massage.

Tip: The spa is open from 7:00a.m. to 10:00p.m. which is earlier than many other spas. I highly recommend taking advantage of the spa early (my favorite was doing the sauna, steam, and pool circuit before I started my day of sightseeing (or left for the airport).

Bodrum is about as dreamy as it gets. And it's even dreamier if you're staying at Maxx Royal. It's no surprise that Maxx Royal's spa, Maxx Wellbeing, has world-class spa amenities. The best part? Beyond the stunning indoor pool (where I spent mornings swimming laps), the space is complete with a lavish floor-to-ceiling marble hammam, a eucalyptus-infused steam room, hot infrared sauna, Himalayan salt room, cold plunge, LED therapy water showers, calming relaxation rooms, and more to indulge in anytime you like.

Best Massage

Mandarin Oriental Bosphorus, Istanbul

A sweet waterfront respite with unmatched views of the Bosphorus, the Mandarin Oriental Bosphorus feels intimate and grand at once. It's the ideal stay for perfume lovers—the hotel has a uniquely delightful scent of jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla that wafts by you the second you step foot in the lobby.

One of the best parts of the Mandarin Oriental Bosphorus is The Spa. They've created a massive (3,500 square meters) subterranean oasis with a dreamy lush spa garden in the center that instantly pulls you into the zen mood before you even step into the treatment room. And you'll want to spend time in the treatment room—particularly getting a massage. There's everything from massages and scrubs, to body wraps and advanced detox therapies using the infrared MLX I³Dome. Everything has a holistic through line and a massage is the ultimate delight. It's not only the massage you want...it's the massage you need. Somehow the massage therapist gives individual attention to each tendon, muscle, ligament, and fascia, loosening knots and tightness I've had for years.

For treating your skin head to toe, Merve Akkaya Beauty Institute was recommended to me by a local for fantastic facial treatments from head to toe. You can get everything from fractional microneedling with RF and LED light therapy, to CACI microcurrent therapy and ultrasonic peels for exfoliation. They also have body treatments, masks, and more (and use Biologique Recherche products in some treatments).

Ayna Ayna Beauty

In the Kadıköy neighborhood, this spot delivers is a go-to for a great classic facial. There's hydrafacials, glass facials, platinum facials, or the ultimate, an everything facial that encompasses deep cleansing, exfoliation, and extractions, to microneedling, LED therapy, oxygen infusion, and targeted masks. Everything is customized for your most gorgeous glow.

As someone with sensitive skin, I usually play it safe when trying facials in foreign countries. But once glance at the Black Diamond Non-Surgical Lifting Facial created with one of my favorite beauty brands 111SKIN and I was willing to risk it. And I'm so glad I did: the sculpting, soothing, firming, lifting magic that happened in one hour was almost too good to be true. My fine lines? Erased. Dullness? Vanished. Dryness? Eliminated. It completely massaged away any signs of jetlag or late nights cocktails leaving my skin impossibly glow, lifted, and sculpted to the gods.

Sanitas Spa at Çırağan Palace Kempinski Hotel

Is there anything more glamorous than sleeping in an actual palace? Dating back to the 17th century, the grand Çırağan Palace Kempinski Hotel was formerly an Ottoman-era imperial palace. It's since been reimagined with more modern comforts, but the opulence is still there. The open-air courtyard is draped with greenery and flowers as you watch boats sail past on the Bosphorus; it’s minutes away from some of Istanbul’s most famous sights; and the Sanitas Spa is fantastic.

Traditionally, hammams are a community-based experiences. It's not unusual for you to be totally in the buff (save for disposable underwear) while being scrubbed down next to a total stranger. So if you're a bit more shy or prefer something more intimate, this is where to do it. Ask for Diaz—she was the most incredible spa attendant. You kick off the treatment with a hot sauna before going into the hammam. Then you get scrubbed down head to toe with a kese glove in an almost surgical level of precision. It follows with being enveloped in a cloud of warm, soapy foam before an uber soothing massage. After a rinse, your entire body is covered with a mask made of honey, milk, and rosewater, that naturally warms your body as its applied. As you let it get to work, the spa technician washes and conditions your hair before a final rinse off. At the end, they help dry you off and apply a super calming rosewater tonic to your skin to seal it all in. Pure bliss.

Best Blowout

LUXUS Istiklal Cadessi

Hair is basically a religion in Turkey and most local women have a standing salon treatment to keep is glossy and bouncy. It's sort of a rite of passage in Istanbul and you can't pass up the opportunity to get a good blowout or silkifying treatment. It's especially ideal in summer, if you, like me, have been swimming in the ocean and out in the sun leaving your hair dry, brassy, and straw-like. Here you can get a bouncy blowout, trim, tone, gloss, hair botox, and more. The result? The shiniest, happiest hair you've ever had.

If you're going to Turkey, you should definitely get your nails done. Not only are the manicures amazing, but it's so much more inexpensive to get your nails done. (For example, a gorgeous gel mani with design costs about $35 USD.) Whether you prefer something simple or more elaborate with art or designs, Pap Art Nail Studio came highly recommended. The nail technicians are talented and meticulous with their attention to detail and the salon is clean and orderly—a dream for someone type A, like me.

My favorite choice of souvenir anywhere I travel is a fantastic local beauty product. There's no shortages of markets, shops, and boutiques in Turkey and everything I've found has been beyond dreamy.

Pelcare

Sun butter? Superfood glow cream? Saffron sunscreen? Those are just the few things you'll find created by gorgeous Istanbul-based beauty brand Pelcare. Everything is beyond gorgeous and smell absolutely divine.

Abtira

I'm a sucker for a great botanical-based skincare brand and stumbling across this gorgeous one was a stroke of luck. It has an impressive amount of skin serums, oils, balms, and tinctures—it even has a line tailored to menopausal skin. I'm partial to the lavender marigold SPF balm.

Atelier Rebul

If there's one thing I want to smell like, it's golden hour. And this beauty brand does a fantastic Istanbul-inspired scent that bottles that exact scent. The brand dates back to 1895, where French pharmacist Jean Cesar Reboul is said to have founded Turkey's first "pharmacie," Rebul Pharmacy). I spray a little cloud over my skin every morning and I swear I’m instantly in a better mood. It’s uniquely warm and refreshing vanilla scent with pear, neroli, jasmine, and toasted coconut. So subtle, yet it lingers all day, and I’ve never gotten more compliments.

As a royal editor, I've been to London more than my fair share of times. Royal events are certainly fun, but after an action-packed week in London and Eton attending Trooping the Colour, Garter Day and Royal Ascot, I was looking to decompress and get away from the crowds without being too far from the airport. My ideal hotel experience involves feeling like I'm in the middle of a Masterpiece drama but with a spa, dining and maybe even a bit of falconry. Throw in some horses, and I’m sold—and that’s how I found Lucknam Park.

Located about an hour-and-a-half from London in the Wiltshire countryside, Lucknam Park is a close drive to Bath and numerous Cotswolds villages. But with 500 acres of parkland, the historic estate gives you plenty of peace, quiet and privacy, making you feel completely removed from the outside world.

While I’m a certified horse girl, you certainly don’t need to be a rider to enjoy a trip to the area, as my friend Lauren can attest. Whether you want to make it a spa weekend, pretend you're an extra in Bridgerton while visiting the city of Bath or drink tea in the wood-paneled library, read on for my guide to the ultimate English countryside girls’ trip.

Riding and Country Pursuits

As a horse girl, the biggest attraction for me was Lucknam Park's equestrian offerings, so my ride around the estate was the highlight of the trip. Accompanied by an instructor, my pony Cindy and I walked, trotted and cantered through the forest and fields of flowers while meeting some wildlife and just taking in the stunning views. I only took up horseback riding a few years ago as an adult, and my instructor gave me some incredibly helpful pointers during our time together that I’ve been able to apply to my riding back home.

For non-riders, the hotel offers everything from duck herding (really, this is a thing!) to croquet, cycling, archery, falconry, picnics, garden walks and clay pigeon shooting. Although I forgot my swimsuit, the hotel also has a beautiful indoor pool area located within the relaxing spa—next time I’ll definitely be taking advantage of a massage.

Rooms and Dining

One of my favorite parts of staying at Lucknam Park was how homey it feels. With only 42 rooms, you’re certainly not a number, and we got to know the wonderful staff by name. Guest rooms are situated in the main country house, the rose cottage or around the courtyard, where our room, the Lilac Suite, was located, and thoughtful touches include shelves of wellies and Barbour jackets available for loan.

We enjoyed an elegant dinner at the hotel’s Michelin-starred Restaurant Hywel Jones as well as more casual meals at the Walled Garden restaurant, where breakfast, lunch and dinner is served either indoors or al fresco. One of my favorite details was the map showing where the different ingredients were sourced from around the region.

Day Trips

Our top priority was visiting Bath, and since it was less than 30 minutes away, it made for a great way to spend the morning and early afternoon before we had afternoon tea at the hotel. With plenty of attractions like the Roman Baths, The Jane Austen Centre and Bath Abbey, you can make your outing as busy or as laid-back as you want. Since I’d already done all of the above on prior trips and we were more interested in wandering, my friend and I spent a happy day shopping and admiring the Regency architecture.

There’s nothing I love more than exploring a quaint English village, so I was excited to discover that the village of Lacock, where numerous scenes in the Harry Potter movies were filmed, was less than 20 minutes away from the hotel. Unfortunately, Lacock Abbey closed at 5 p.m. and we arrived around 4:30, but we were able to head into a few shops and check out the beautiful timber-framed homes, some of which date back to the 13th century. My friend and I found the cutest shop with locally made soaps, candles and leather bags, and I bought myself a leather horse keychain as a reminder of our trip.

How to Get There

I was traveling with an English friend who had her car with her, so she drove us from Eton to Lucknam Park. But if you’re arriving by air, Bristol airport is an hour away, and London Heathrow is roughly an hour and a half from the hotel. I highly recommend Executive Cars of Bath for a private car service, and there’s also a train station in Chippenham or Bath. While having access to a rental car would be ideal, the hotel is also situated amongst some fairly wild, one-lane country roads that aren’t for the faint of heart—if you’re a nervous driver and/or not used to driving on the British side of the road, stick to hiring a taxi for day trips.

My British Countryside Essentials

If you're looking for a sunny beach vacation, chances are you've already considered booking a flight to the Caribbean, especially if you live on the east coast of North America—the convenience is undeniable. Most Americans grow up learning about European royal families, from the British monarchy to the kings and queens who shaped the history of countries like France and Spain. But what many don’t realize is that Hawaii was once its own sovereign kingdom before it become a U.S. state, and there’s still a royal palace right in O‘ahu.

During a recent visit to Honolulu’s ʻIolani Palace, I found myself standing in rooms that challenge the assumptions travelers make about Hawaii. Beyond the beaches, luaus and pineapple drinks lies the story of a nation that once had its own monarchs, government and global relationships. Walking through the palace’s grand halls—and later, the room where Queen Liliʻuokalani was imprisoned—gave me a powerful reminder that Hawaii’s royal history is far more recent and more complex than many Americans realize.

ʻIolani Palace historian Zita Cup Choy tells Marie Claire that understanding Hawaii was once an independent nation fundamentally changes the visitor experience. That being said, Iolani Palace, built in 1882, serves as “both a royal residence and a place where a nation’s history, dignity and loss are held,” Cup Choy says.

Queen Liliʻuokalani was the Hawaiian kingdom's last monarch, and she was imprisoned for nearly eight months in the palace after being illegally overthrown by a coup of American businessmen in 1893. “The overthrow was carried out by a small group with significant economic and political power, despite broad opposition among Hawaiian Kingdom subjects,” says Cup Choy.

The queen was forced to abdicate and lived the rest of her life as a private citizen until she died in 1917, dedicating her time to preserving Hawaiian culture and causes related to women and children such as the Lili‘uokalani Trust.

For many guests, myself included, the most emotional stop on the tour is the room where the queen was held. In the center of the Imprisonment Room sits a glass case displaying the quilt that Queen Liliʻuokalani worked on with her companions during her house arrest, and it reads more like a diary, with the piece stitched with significant dates and names of her supporters.

As a royal editor, one of the things that struck me the most was the similarity of ʻIolani Palace’s throne room to what you’d see at Buckingham Palace. The elaborate gowns on display reflect a Victorian style, and photos on display show the Hawaiian royals visiting the British royals.

Cup Choy says that “visitors are often surprised to learn that, despite Hawaii’s geographic isolation, the kingdom was modern, globally aware and intentional in how it presented itself to the world.” This includes innovations like electric lighting and telephones, showing how Hawaii was “an educated, literate and technologically advanced kingdom.”

Queen Liliʻuokalani remains one of the most revered figures in Hawaiian history, and Cup Choy says visitors are particularly moved by the monarch's response to adversity.

Instead of encouraging violence, the queen “believed the wrong done to Hawaii should be addressed through diplomacy, international law, constitutional law, the courts and the Hawaiian Kingdom’s own governing institutions,” Cup Choy says. “She sought restoration without further bloodshed.”

Walking through the palace, it's hard not to feel moved by the story of Hawaii's royal family, and Cup Choy says there's a careful balance between being a tourist attraction and “a sacred place in Hawaii's history.”

As I learned during my recent trip, O‘ahu is full of rich cultural offerings, and Cup Choy says ʻIolani Palace works with travel partners to encourage visitors to the island to explore outside its beaches. Select properties like the Halekulani Hotel, one of the Leading Hotels of the World properties where I stayed on the island, offer free admission to the palace as part of a broader mission to introduce travelers to Hawaii's story.

“Hawaii is often seen first for its natural beauty,” Cup Choy says. “The palace invites visitors to see the depth of its history and the responsibility to care for its people, culture and environment.”

New York City makes a very good case for staying put in the summer. There are farmers' markets to visit, linen dresses to wear, park picnics to plan, and the relief of the city feeling a little softer than usual—especially as some of the usuals migrate East. But eventually, even the best city weekend runs into the same truth: flip-flops on pavement are not the same as flip-flops near the beach.

The Hamptons have always meant different things to different people. There is the full summer-house version, with a packed car and a standing Friday departure time. There is the see-and-be-seen version, the Kennedy-adjacent version, and the quieter version where the whole point is simply being near water and trees and getting a little salt in your hair.

The sweet spot, to me, is somewhere in between. A weekend that still feels like the Hamptons—roadside farm stands, beaches, lobster rolls, and a reason to pack a striped sundress—but doesn't require you to plan your entire summer in February or turn dinner reservations into a competitive sport. While East Hampton and Montauk tend to dominate the conversation, the people who spend the most time out east often gravitate toward the places that feel a little less crowded and a little less performative. The best version of the Hamptons isn't necessarily the one everyone is posting from; it's the one that allows you to actually enjoy being there.

Ahead, the under-the-radar places to stay, eat, shop, and explore for a Hamptons weekend that captures everything people love about summer out east—without the stress of trying to do it all.

The hardest part of a Hamptons weekend is often figuring out where to sleep. A summer rental can literally run into the hundreds of thousands, hotel rooms come at a premium, and even the cute inns and beachy motels tend to book up fast. There are big resorts, charming bed-and-breakfasts, and everything in between, but the trade-off is usually the same: high prices, limited space, or the feeling that you had to plan the whole thing well before Memorial Day.

Canoe Place is the rare stay that makes the math feel a little less impossible. Set on the Shinnecock Canal, it gives you that unmistakable out-east feeling—water, boats, beach air, a good restaurant onsite—without requiring the full Route 27 endurance test before you even unpack. You’re close enough to Westhampton for an easy afternoon and about 35 minutes from Sag Harbor, but set just far enough back that the weekend doesn't begin with two hours of traffic-induced regret.

The property itself has the kind of history that makes the Hamptons feel like more than just a summer scene. Canoe Place sits on the site of one of the country’s oldest inns. After years of restoration, it reopened with landscaped grounds, a classic pool, restaurants, bars, and rooms that feel considered without trying too hard. It has the bones of an old inn, but none of the creakiness.

What makes it especially smart is that there is a version of the stay for almost every kind of trip. The main inn works if you want the ease of a hotel room and breakfast nearby. The cottages are great if you want a little more space. And the Boathouses are the real hidden gems, especially for families or anyone who wants the feeling of a Hamptons home. Set along the canal, they feel private yet offer hotel amenities: multiple bedrooms, full kitchens, fireplaces, private terraces, water views, and access to the pool, hot tub, lounge, fitness center, restaurant, bar, and spa.

For a weekend with kids, friends, or simply too many beach bags, that extra room matters. You can make coffee in a real kitchen, let everyone spread out, sit outside by the water, and still walk back into the hotel when you want dinner or a drink. It's the Hamptons as an actual weekend away—and that feels increasingly rare.

One of the reasons people return to the Hamptons year after year is that no two weekends ever really look the same. You can spend the entire time on a beach chair if that's your thing. You can make dinner reservations months in advance and treat it like a sport. Or you can do what I think is the most enjoyable version of the Hamptons: pick a direction, start driving, and see where the day takes you.

The East End is filled with the kind of small-town Americana that feels increasingly rare. There are historic villages, family-run farm stands, roadside flower carts operating on the honor system, old marinas, independent bookstores, antique stores, and seafood shacks that have been there longer than most of the people who eat there.

One of the things about Canoe Place is that you're positioned almost perfectly between the North and South Forks. You don't feel locked into one town. If you want to spend the morning wandering Sag Harbor, popping into local shops, and walking the marina, you can. If you're in the mood for vineyards, farm stands, and a slower pace, the North Fork is equally accessible.

The Hamptons are close enough to the city that plenty of familiar names have followed the crowd out east. But the reason to eat here is not really to recreate your downtown dinner reservation by the water. It's the local stuff—corn, tomatoes, seafood, peaches, clams—and the places that know what to do with it.

For an afternoon that does not require everyone to sit still, start at Kidd Squid Brewing Co. in Sag Harbor. It is especially good for kids, dogs, or anyone who just wants a low-lift plan: grab a beer, then wander through town before heading back.

For dinner, Good Ground Tavern makes the strongest case for staying put at least one night. The outdoor setup is the kind of place you want to linger, the menu is rooted in the area, and the food is exactly what you want on vacation: a Little Gem salad with crispy oysters, proper clam chowder, and easy crowd-pleasers like beef filet, roasted chicken, and fresh fish.

For a classic waterfront dinner, Cowfish is also a good choice, especially at sunset. Or, if you want to make a night of exploring, drive into town for Ivy on Main, which has that lively local-restaurant feeling that works for almost any kind of group.

The white-sneakers revival was just as crucial to Emily Blunt and Julianne Moore's recent airport outfits as their passports. Both stars couldn't risk packing the shoe trend in checked bags. Instead, they styled them from baggage claim, through security, and onto their respective flights.

Two of Blunt's buzziest blockbusters premiered this season, The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Disclosure Day, meaning she had high standards for her travel sneakers. They had to accommodate a variety of off-duty outfits during her press tours, without blowing her cover. Axel Arigato's $300 Clean Sneakers—the same model she's worn on repeat since 2019—proved themselves up to the challenge.

Blunt kept a low profile in all-black loungewear, but her stark white shoes missed the discreet memo. Not only was the calfskin leather blinding, each rounded toe box, branded sidewall, and 1.8-inch-thick tread was decidedly anti-slim.

Unlike her Devil Wears Prada co-star, Anne Hathaway, Blunt never wavered into ballet-sneaker territory. The Oppenheimer actor's soles have been stuck to supportive Axel Arigato sneakers like glue for years. They haven't shown a single sign of separating anytime soon.

This summer, Hailey Bieber, Selena Gomez, and Dua Lipa are holding down the white sneaker fort on dry land. Bieber chose colorless Miu Miu sneakers; Gomez brought $150 Cole Haan to London; and Lipa flew to her Italian wedding in Nike x Jacquemus Moon Shoes.

The It sneakers are just as popular among VIPs in the air. Earlier this year, Nicole Kidman's take on the trend was spotted pre-security at the Sydney Airport. They mirrored the low-profile look of ballet sneakers, except with slightly more structured gum soles.

Most of her airport outfit bore Chanel tags, but the brand of her footwear remains a mystery. Their soles arch up each heel like Axel Arigato's Daze Runners, though. Perhaps Kidman and Blunt share more than just an affinity for white airport sneakers. Maybe they're fellow Axel Arigato girls, too.

Film festival season is prime time for airport sneaker sightings. On May 15, Julianne Moore landed at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival in unmissable Adidas Stan Smith sneakers. Much like Blunt, the strong tennis shoes have earned as many airline miles as Moore over the years. Since 2023, they've joined her in Milan, New York City, and the French Riviera. The Oscar winner prefers her $100 Stan Smiths in white, with just a splash of navy blue around each heel.

Moore almost always styles the Adidas best-sellers with a Bottega Veneta purse of some sort. In Oct. 2023, the Medium Gemelli was her It bag of choice. Earlier this year, she rotated between the Dustbag and the Barbara Tote, both in black Intrecciato leather.

This time around, the brand ambassador doubled up on Bottega Veneta bags, with the latter, the $5,900 Barbara Tote, as her carry-on and the $4,900 Madison as her personal item. To finish, Moore shade-matched her white sneakers to an oversize button-down and sweater-turned-shawl.

Shop White Airport Sneakers Inspired by VIP Frequent Flyers

Since I was a little girl, I always dreamed about going to Hawaii. It’s an odd vacation for a redhead who doesn’t necessarily love the beach, but for me, it’s never been about sunbathing or swimming. The culture surrounding the islands has always intrigued me, from traditions like leis and hula dancing to the stories of the Hawaiian royal family.

For my fellow East Coasters, you know it’s quite a haul to get to Hawaii—it’s much easier for us to travel to, say, Ireland or the Bahamas. So despite considering myself fairly well-traveled, I had still never made it to our 50th state until this spring, when I explored the beautiful island of Oʻahu.

Although Hawaii was a lot like what I expected—beautiful weather, friendly people, and plenty of pineapple drinks—there was much that took me by surprise, too. From Honolulu’s stunning art museum to local storytellers, the island has so much more to offer than just hanging out at your resort pool. And if you carve time out of your beach days to immerse yourself in Oʻahu’s rich history, you’ll come home with much more than a tan (or in my case, burn).

More Than Luaus

When you arrive at many Hawaiian hotels you’re greeted with a lei, and while I received beautiful flower garlands and one made out of tiny yellow shells, I also had the chance to make my very own lei during one of the cultural workshops offered at the Kahala Hotel & Resort. Using strips of ti leaves, my group was guided by women from the Hawaiian Music Perpetuation Society, who shared stories of the Hawaiian islands as we worked. We also learned traditional Hawaiian stamping, which was used to tell stories through images carved into bamboo sticks.

Tulu Mana of the nonprofit society told me that the group is proud to be “teaching traditional methods that our kids are able to take with them so our story doesn’t get lost.” The Kahala has embraced the group, which weaves music, dance and storytelling into their offerings as they keep native Hawaiian culture alive.

And while it might not seem like a cultural experience, Cirque Du Soleil’s ‘Auana tells the story of Hawaii from the Polynesian migration to 1950s surf culture, all with jaw-dropping acrobatics that had us holding our breath.

Must-See Museums

Going to an art museum might not be on your radar during a Hawaiian vacation, but the Honolulu Museum of Art isn’t your typical day out. The building itself emphasizes the indoor/outdoor living visible throughout the island, with flower-filled courtyards connecting the different galleries. Although the museum is home to a prominent collection of Asian and Pan-Pacific art, I was surprised to find plenty of Renaissance and Impressionist paintings among the works on display, too.

To get a better understanding of Hawaii’s past, present and future, The Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum is a great place to start. I could have easily spent the entire afternoon there, with galleries dedicated to the Hawaiian royal family, Polynesian wayfinding, volcanoes and more. Complimentary admission to the museums is available through a number of Oʻahu properties, making it even easier to enjoy a cultural day out.

And as a royal editor, I had to make it to Iolani Palace, the only official royal residence in the United States. Although Hawaii’s monarchy was overthrown in the late 1800s, the palace remains as a tribute to America’s lost royals—a topic I’ll be exploring more in depth soon.

In Oʻahu, there’s something for everyone, whether you want to be in the middle of the bustling downtown Waikiki or on a quiet stretch of beach. During my trip, I stayed at three properties from The Leading Hotels of The World, and each hotel had its own distinct personality—and a genuine spirit of Aloha.

If you’re hoping to get away from it all, the beachfront Kahala Hotel & Resort offers a peaceful retreat just outside busy Waikiki. My favorite part of the property was Dolphin Quest’s 26,000-square foot lagoon, located right in the middle of the resort, where I got up close and personal with the hotel’s dolphins while learning about conserving their environments. Whether you want to spend a day at the spa or take part in one of the resort’s ocean education programs, there’s plenty to do without it feeling overly touristy. Pro tip: It’s well worth it to get up and watch the sunset from the beach (especially if you’re struggling with the time change).

For those who want to be in the center of the action, ESPACIO The Jewel of Waikiki, is located directly across from the famous Waikiki Beach. The property feels more like a private residence than a traditional hotel, and my friend compared it to a sleek Tokyo apartment, from the private elevator entrances to the meticulous design details throughout the suites. Its rooftop infinity pool is reservation-only, and one night, my group enjoyed caviar and champagne while watching the sunset and the surfers across the street.

And for a mix of the two, Halekulani sits on the beach while remaining steps away from Waikiki’s restaurants and designer shops like Dior and Gucci. Guest experiences include surf lessons, sound therapy massages and even a dojo in residence, who guided my group through a relaxing meditation activity and an exhibition of his personal art. The property is one of the most historic in Waikiki, and watching a hula dancer and live musicians in front of the hotel’s iconic Banyan tree at sunset is a memory I won’t soon forget.

Local Flavors

My visit was filled with memorable meals ranging from high-end dining to beachfront tacos, but the signature flavors of the islands were always present. At the Kahala, Alan Wong’s is one of the newest additions to Oʻahu's dining scene, showcasing Hawaiian dishes like a whole tomato salad with sweet, tangy Li Hing Mui Ume dressing. Chef Wong’s signature “Bully’s Drink” set my group off on a quest to find the perfect pineapple martini, and for me, this one couldn’t be beat.

The island’s Japanese influence can be felt at Mugen, the Forbes five-star restaurant inside Espacio, where local Hawaiian ingredients meld with global flavors. Roy’s, also famous for their pineapple martinis, is a favorite of locals and visitors alike. And for a special night out, La Mer at Halekulani offers elegant French cuisine with a Hawaiian twist, along with some insanely beautiful ocean views.

There's literally no right or wrong way to visit Paris. Whether you're a regular visitor to Europe, a Paris Fashion Week aficionado, or an eager follower of Emily in Paris, planning a Parisian getaway has never been easier. But if you've seen every tourist attraction and want to avoid the crowds, it's more than possible to explore another side of the French capital.

I only spent three nights in Paris, but I savored every moment. From discovering boutique cocktail bars to spending way too much time in chic department stores and ordering from every gluten-free restaurant, my mini-break in the city was completely unexpected and totally perfect.

Where to Stay

Mondovi Luxury Suites is set in the corner of a quiet street in what is otherwise an extremely busy part of town in Paris's 1st arrondissement. Close to the Louvre, the accommodation boasts an incredibly helpful concierge and well-equipped apartment-style rooms, which even include washing machines and kitchens.

With an on-site bar—more on that later—and tourist destinations nearby, Mondovi is ideal for a short trip or an extended stay, with each apartment allowing guests the space to relax and go at their own pace. Breakfast is available—ours included incredible gluten-free pastries, fresh juice, coffee, and a selection of fruit.

Boutique 4-star hotel Padam is situated in Paris's 16th arrondissement, within walking distance of iconic landmark the Arc de Triomphe and the Avenue des Champs-Élysées. On a peaceful Paris street, Padam features just 34 rooms, making any stay a tranquil experience. Breakfast is served in the hotel restaurant, Edith, which is also available for lunch and dinner reservations.

We particularly enjoyed having a small balcony in our room, which complemented the boutique hotel's visually-striking aesthetic. From its palatial bathroom to the embroidered headboards and stylish foyer, every detail feels purposeful and only adds to the calming atmosphere.

What to Do

Drink Celeb-Approved Cocktails

World-famous bartender Colin Field, who just so happens to be Kate Moss's favorite mixologist, curated the menu for Le 7 Cocktail Bar. Underneath the Mondovi Luxury Suites, the newly-opened bar spills out into the street and is the perfect hideaway for a French 75 or two.

Field—who served us our drinks—was the head bartender at the Hemingway Bar inside the Hôtel Ritz Paris for 29 years. Field brings his wealth of experience and his world-famous mixology creations to Le 7 Cocktail Bar, ensuring the sleek hideaway is equipped with an enviable menu.

Eat (Gluten-Free) Pastries

Known for its fresh pastries, Paris did not disappoint when it came to both gluten-free and regular options. As a purveyor of all things gluten-free, I made a beeline for Copains, a popular bakery in which everything is made without wheat. Vegan and dairy-free options are also available, making it the perfect choice for anyone with alternate dietary requirements.

For those hoping to indulge in wheat-based products in Paris, my partner highly recommends The French Bastards. Initially drawn to the name (who can blame him?), every single piece of bread, cake, or pastry ordered from the boulangerie was nothing short of exquisite.

For dinner, we sampled Loulou, another gluten-free spot that's open all day and offers everything from brunch through dinner. With allergens clearly labeled on its menu and optional cocktails, coffee, and cake, this restaurant is the perfect choice for a stop during any Paris getaway.

My trip to Paris was my first time traveling with a Rollz Motion Rollator, which was a total game changer. Don't get me wrong, my Hello Kitty walking sticks still have plenty of life left in them, but it felt like the right moment to find a mobility aid with more functionality.

Smith&Son is spread over three floors, features an in-demand café, and the staff clearly understand the world's undeniable yearning for Heated Rivalry. Top marks all round.

While there's no shortage of shopping opportunities in Paris, another favorite during my 3-night getaway was Boutiques Publicisdrugstore next to the Champs-Élysées. Stocking everything from gourmet snacks to unique gifts, cosmetics and perfume, books and clothing, Publicisdrugstore is a one-of-a-kind destination, particularly if you like being surprised. I envy Selena Gomez's smart move before her trip to London. She chose an ultra-supportive take on the white sneakers trend—for just $150 at Cole Haan.

Yes, Gomez crossed the pond to shoot Season 6 of Only Murders In the Building, but her filming schedule encourages plenty of tourist time. She and her friends picked the perfect spot—and street style looks—for an impromptu Instagram photoshoot. Gomez posed in front of Big Ben in a little white dress from For Love & Lemons, which matched Cole Haan's GrandPrø Tennis 2.0 Sneakers.

In the midst of a Hollywood-wide ballet sneaker takeover, Gomez's trainers stood out for being somewhere in between slim and chunky. Mentally, you’re in a bikini with a cold drink in hand; in reality, you’re packing a sweater for dinner and debating whether a three-hour drive to the coast is worth the traffic. For a long weekend that actually delivers on the fantasy, the Bahamas makes a convincing case: close enough for a three-day escape, warm enough to feel like a true reset, and just removed from the usual Florida circuit to register as an actual getaway.

The trick is knowing where to land. Summer travel often asks one destination to satisfy too many people, but set along Nassau’s Cable Beach, Baha Mar is unusually good at accommodating conflicting vacation personalities. One person wants sun and silence. Another is already thinking about dinner. A child, naturally, wants a water slide. Someone else packed multiple dresses and expects them to be seen. Here, none of those agendas feels mutually exclusive—which, in its own way, is the luxury.

And while it would be easy to treat Nassau as simply a convenient backdrop, the city has an identity beyond resort life. There’s the colonial architecture downtown, the Straw Market’s longstanding craft tradition, conch salad eaten outdoors, and the particular warmth of Bahamian hospitality that feels genuinely unforced. Nassau doesn’t have the see-and-be-seen machinery of some warm-weather destinations, which is part of its appeal. The pace is slower, the mood less performative, and for a three-day trip, that can feel refreshing.

In Nassau, you can make the trip as independent or as buttoned up as you want. A villa makes sense for a larger group; island hopping to Eluethra, Paradise Island, or Harbor Island if you want the Bahamas to feel more exploratory; Baha Mar is the easy answer if the point of the trip is to land, unpack, and not spend the next 72 hours making decisions.

Rosewood Baha Mar is the most elegant version of that ease. It gives you access to the scale of Baha Mar while still feeling a bit removed. The mood is quieter and more residential: hand-painted walls, local art, shaded terraces, soft tropical colors, and rooms that feel like a vacation home. The suites are especially useful for families, with space to spread out, full kitchens, and sweeping patios.

The beautifully appointed space at The Library serves local bush teas in the morning and afternoon, while Manor Bar gives the hotel a properly grown-up evening ritual, with an extensive whiskey selection and the kind of atmosphere that makes a nightcap unexpectedly high on the itinerary. The beach and pool carry that same energy: polished, calm, and notably free of the early-morning beach-chair scramble that can define larger resorts—which is exactly the note you want in a place designed to make vacation easy.

Baha Mar is very good at letting you do as much—or as little—as you want without making either choice feel wrong. If you’re staying at Rosewood, that often starts at the pool, which has a distinctly calmer, more sophisticated rhythm than the nearby accommodations. If your version of activity involves a robe, book an afternoon treatment at Sense, A Rosewood Spa.

If you’re traveling with children—or adults who become children near a lazy river—Baha Bay is right there with slides, water sports, and enough built-in entertainment to keep everyone occupied without requiring much thought.

For the person who likes a little movement, a day on the boat is the obvious call. Nassau’s waters tend to be especially inviting this time of year—calm, clear, and exactly the shade of blue people spend the winter fantasizing about. Go snorkeling, island hop, spend the day around Rose Island, or lean into the slightly cliché, but undeniably fun swim-with-the-pigs excursion.

And while it’s easy to stay happily within the resort orbit, Nassau is worth a visit. The Straw Market remains a classic stop for woven goods and local craft, and if the timing lines up, Junkanoo offers the kind of joyful mood that reminds you the Bahamas is far more than a pretty beach backdrop.

At night, there’s the casino, which somehow manages to make gambling feel less grim, thanks to the fact that you’re still in resort wear and steps from the ocean. Even if blackjack is not your thing, it gives the evening a bit of a buzz.

One of the nicer things about the island is that meals allow you to choose your own adventure. It can be a long, salt-haired lunch that drifts into sunset at Costa, where the perfect order is a spicy margarita, the tinga tacos, and chips and guac. It is relaxed, pretty, and very easy to stay longer than you meant to.

Café Boulud is the other mood, and the place to book when you want one meal that feels like an occasion instead of an extension of the beach day. Daniel Boulud’s Baha Mar outpost has that polished, old-school glamour that makes dinner feel like an occasion, but without the stiffness that phrase sometimes implies. It’s French, yes, but not in a way that feels oddly disconnected from where you are—local seafood and Caribbean ingredients folded into every dish.

Arawak Cay, better known as the Fish Fry, has been one of Nassau’s great gathering places for decades: a strip of casual seafood spots with endless conch, snapper, cold beer, and music. The Poop Deck is a Nassau classic for fresh seafood by the water, the kind of place that reminds you not every vacation meal needs to be overly produced.

The ideal packing list accounts for both the dress you brought for dinner and the footwear you do not mind getting a little sandy.

Knowing exactly what to pack for a trip is no mean feat, but Hailey Bieber appears to be a professional when it comes to the task. Case in point: currently in Seoul, South Korea, with husband Justin Bieber, Hailey's already debuted a plethora of super-cute and chic outfits.

The Rhode founder—who is styled by Dani Michelle—shared a selection of photos from the trip on Instagram, giving fans a glimpse of some of the looks she chose for the occasion. In two snaps captured in a convenience store, Hailey could be seen wearing Toteme's Kick Flare Trousers with a long-sleeve sheer crochet top.

When the Princess of Wales travelled to Reggio Emilia, Italy for a two-day visit to the small Italian town, she couldn’t really check in to the local Holiday Inn Express. Princess Kate and her small entourage actually stayed at the Relais Roncolo 1888 in Quattro Castella, a small hamlet just outside Reggio Emilia. The unique boutique hotel property must have been extra special to the Princess of Wales, as she has special memories of the Italian region.

“The Princess of Wales has long shared a special connection with Italy, having spent three months living in Florence as a student years ago,” Ludovica Stevan wrote for House and Garden. Princess Kate spent a semester in Florence, a short 1-hour train ride from Reggio Emilia, where she studied Italian and art history for three months during the summer of 2000. “The quiet elegance of this restored Emilian estate feels perfectly suited to her appreciation for the country’s slower and more discreet pace of life.”

The secluded location of the Relais Roncolo 1888 estate was ideal for the princess’s visit to be as discreet as possible. “Relais Roncolo 1888 is a luxury boutique hotel in the 320-acre eco-estate Tenuta di Roncolo, located in the hills of Emilia,” the website boasts. 320 acres from anyone else ensured the princess could enjoy some privacy during her short stay. The Villa Manodori, the unique 6-bedroom villa where Princess Kate and her team stayed, “sits among rolling vineyards at the foot of the Apennines” and features “original frescoes, antique architectural details and carefully chosen contemporary design pieces coexist in harmony within restored 19th-century architecture.”

As a passionate art history aficionado, the Princess of Wales would have deeply appreciated the murals, frescoes, and historical architectural details. The villa’s ‘Senior Suite,’ where the Princess of Wales most likely stayed, features “stunningly frescoed ceilings” with “open onto views of the formal gardens and the surrounding Tuscan-Emilian countryside.” The room costs around $1680 per night, but it is likely that her entourage rented the entire villa for privacy and convenience.

When it comes to vacation, I'm choosy. (Picky, according to my husband.) I'm anti-humidity, anti-insects, anti-crowds; my expectations for hotels are sky-high; and my ideal vacation is an activity taster menu of sorts, with space for water activities, fine dining, nap time, hiking, beachside cocktails, and minimal travel. As has been pointed out to me—mostly by said husband—this asks a lot of a single vacation.

Enter: Shoulder season. Defined as the period between slow season and peak tourist season—in the south of France, where I'd been eyeing for my trip, this is April and May—it promises low humidity, fewer crowds, and a more authentic experience. And authenticity was definitely what I was looking for in this vacation—along with hiking trails, beaches, great restaurants, pools, luxurious hotels, and no significant traveling from place to place (I can't be navigating the French railways, I'm in my thirties). Not much to ask, right?

Well, kind of a lot, actually. But thanks to a combination of the right time of year, good planning, and well-placed (and generally excellent) hotels, I'm happy to say it actually worked. Behold, the Shoulder Season French Riviera Vacation of Dreams.

Stop One: Antibes

First, don't balk at "stop one"—there were only two stops on this trip (see: "no significant traveling from place to place"). We designed our aforementioned two stops in the French Riviera to provide multiple touchpoints for activities, and the town of Juan-les-Pins was a perfect start: situated between Nice and Cannes, a delightful combination of charming (winding streets! historic sites!) and urbane (great food, gorgeous boutiques). We stayed in the AC Hotel by Marriott Ambassadeur Antibes—Juan Les Pins, five minutes from the beach and twenty minutes from the heart of Antibes' Old Town. (This proximity to key places is typical of the AC Hotels by Marriott brand, a formerly Spanish-owned line of hotels that prides itself on central locations, fresh European food, and sleek decor.)

Hand on heart, I loved this hotel. The food was fantastic, the outdoor pool like something out of a PC screensaver, the service impeccable. I'm a Marriott Bonvoy member, so I've stayed in my share of excellent Marriott hotels, but this one in particular was filled with delightful details: fruit-infused water in the lobby, a glass elevator (perfect for kids), lavender sachets available before bed. Though we only stayed three days, you could easily stay here a week or more, considering everything Juan-les-Pins has to offer within 20 minutes of the hotel: a long, sandy stretch of beach with restaurants aplenty, Michelin-recommended dining spots in Old Town (we loved Nananere!), and atmospheric bars and cafés.

Side Quest: Cannes

Cannes is only 20 minutes from Juan-les-Pins in an Uber, so we of course spent a day there. It's a port city, so after a delightful morning of sightseeing we set aboard on a four-hour LEO boat tour—which was not just a highlight of the trip, but a highlight of my life. Our guide, Paulo, brought wine, snorkeling gear, pool noodles, and an incredible knowledge of the area; we swam through crystal-clear water, visited tiny islands, drank wine, and basked in the sun. 10/10 life experience.

Stop Two: Marseille

Two hours from Juan-les-Pins lies the bustling city of Marseille—we took an Uber there, but you can also jump on a train, bus, or pre-booked car. Smack in the city center is another top-notch AC Hotels destination, AC Hotel Marseille Prado Velodrome—Marriott, an oasis amid the busy city streets.

Marseille is absolutely filled with things to do—museums, wine tastings, incredible restaurants like Figure—but the beachside glory of Juan-les-Pins had left us in a hiking mood, so we ventured to the Calanques for our final day of the trip. Though just 20 minutes from the city center, the Calanques felt like another destination entirely—rugged terrain, local restaurants, staggeringly clear water.

Finally, let's talk about the weather. We traveled in late April, and I worried about a lack of sun—but as it turns out, April and May in the South of France is the perfect amount of sun. 70 degrees, bright and beautiful, with a light breeze; warm enough to bask in sun loungers, not so hot that we couldn't spend the day walking around. Even the center of Marseille, a major city, wasn't especially humid.

Basically: I cracked it. The perfect vacation. Not the off-season, not quite the on-season, but smack in between, in well-placed hotels that can act as bases for your charcuterie plate of activities. Enjoy!

The bag—basket shaped, with a ruffled trim along the top and snap-removable straps—can be seen wherever there are well-dressed moms pushing strollers. They're perched outside daycares and music classes; they're joining on daily errands and meet-ups with fellow moms at the park. At a new Upper East Side outpost of the coffee chain Fellini on a recent Thursday morning, there are two sets of chatting parents at the walk-up window, two gingham stroller basket bags perched beneath the fresh iced lattes in their cup holders.

Any tote or backpack can serve as a stroller bag, with ample storage space and a wipe-down interior. But for a growing network of moms from New York to Paris, it's this bag, MiniCoton's Basket Bag, that's the only option they want dangling from the handlebars of their Bugaboos and Nunas.

In a sea of plain neoprene totes and function-first diaper backpacks, the ruffled trims and playful patterns on a MiniCoton bag tend to stand out. They come in multicolor ginghams and bold cabana stripes; a sold-out collaboration with the brand Call It By Your Name mixed various bandana prints onto the same exterior. Once you see one swinging from another parent's stroller, you can't unsee it. Oregon-based content creator Jimena Gonzalez was so smitten when one crossed her feed, she acted fast ahead of her second pregnancy: "The second I found out I was expecting, it went straight onto my registry," she says.

But Instagram-friendly design only partially explains their ascent. A waterproof interior to combat leaky bottles helps; so do the easy-access, snap-on straps and the under-$150 price tag. In some ways, it's the next coming of the Internet-famous Amazon Coat: an item that's not over-designed while fulfilling the needs of an exacting customer (a busy, yet style-forward parent).

The basket bag's ascent has been years in the making. Natalia Martinez, MiniCoton's founder, says it launched at the end of 2023. Setting a global mom-bag trend wasn't a goal for the Barcelona-based label, which produces several varieties of tote bags and cotton stroller accessories locally in Spain. In fact, Martinez tells Marie Claire via email, she was more concerned with helping moms find more parenting essentials that felt designed for them—not just their children. "We wanted to place the focus on the mother rather than the baby. Alongside its practicality, the goal was to achieve an aesthetic and on-trend design."

According to moms who first encountered them in the wild, like SoulCycle instructor Victoria Brown, the brand succeeded. "I think I saw another mom at the playground with one, and I had never seen one prior to that, so I asked her where she found it." As a bandana-print obsessive, she landed on one of the Call Me collaboration versions. "It was me in a bag, and I had to have it!"

"It’s definitely one of those pieces that other moms notice right away," agrees Katy Schuele, a Brooklyn-based mom and fitness instructer. She says the bag has become a "cool-mom staple" in the borough best known for, well, "cool-mom" style.

Now that a striped version hangs from her stroller, she reports friends ask about it "all the time. "It’s one of those rare things that feels both super functional and like a style piece, so it naturally becomes something people talk about," she says.

MiniCoton's bags aren't a U.S.-only phenomenon. The brand is frequently tagged in posts from moms in Paris, Milan, and Madrid. I’m currently packing for a trip to London this March, and it requires a particular kind of discipline: resisting the very strong urge to become a character from a book or pretend to be the heroine of a movie.

Through the rest of the hotel, planes of travertine and concrete frame every vista like curated vignettes, while layers of infinity pools cascade across the property in sharp lines that reflect the sky. The aesthetic is minimalist but warm—elevated, sculptural, and seamlessly blending into the surrounding Mexican terrain.

Even the public spaces feel designed for voyeurism. Coyul, Tamarindo’s central open-air restaurant, tempts guests to don their latest resort wear and see who else is doing the same. I kept imagining a breakfast debrief here between a gossipy trio or a mismatched couple, the camera cutting between different groups mid-meltdown.

My serene suite overlooked the ocean, with a private plunge pool that seemed to spill into the sky. Inside was tranquil—soft linens, natural textures, floor-to-ceiling glass—while the elements loomed just outside: wind, crashing waves, a mysterious jungle. It felt peaceful and slightly foreboding at the same time, full of narrative potential.

Nestled onto the coastline, Tamarindo experiences magical golden hours and surreal sunsets that make everyone look like a well-lit movie star. While bathing in the orangey hues, I enjoyed a tamarind mezcalita (a signature), with a little more poise and panache, imagining I was on camera, or could be at any moment.

Mallorca, Spain

Christmas in New York is magical—yes. But it’s also crowded and, let’s face it, expensive. While winter might not be the obvious choice for a girls’ weekend, hear me out: January and February are two of my favorite times to escape to New York City.

The holiday crowds have finally thinned, hotel prices are far more reasonable, and it gives you something fun to look forward to when the weather is freezing and the social calendar feels a little bare.

January in New York doesn't have the over-the-top sparkle of December, but that’s exactly the point. I recently headed into the city for two separate outings—one with my high school friends and one with my sister—and discovered some cozy new favorite spots along the way.

Where to Stay

The Hotel Chelsea has been home to countless artists, authors, and musicians over the years. If you’re looking to combine history with modern luxury (plus an extremely central location), look no further.

With its modern artwork, moody furniture and roaring fireplace, the lobby is an absolute vibe and immediately sets the tone for your stay. My friends and I checked into a Premier Chelsea room, and it truly felt like returning to our own New York apartment, complete with quirky wallpaper and a luxe bathroom I didn’t want to leave.

Where to Eat

No girls' trip is complete without some memorable meals, and dinner at Café Chelsea was a highlight of my weekend with friends. If you didn’t know you were in Manhattan, you could easily imagine you were tucked inside a Parisian bistro. The panisse appetizer was so good, it sent my best friend on a quest to recreate it at home, and both the Chelsea burger and rotisserie chicken were instant hits at our table.

When my sister and I were in search of the perfect January brunch, we landed at Dolly’s in Hell’s Kitchen. Bottomless mimosas served in a boot-shaped glass and a near-perfect avocado eggs Benedict? And then there’s afternoon tea. There’s nothing better than settling in with tiers of tea sandwiches, cakes and a hot brew on a cold winter afternoon. As a royal editor, I’ve become something of an afternoon tea aficionado, and Lady Mendl’s Tea Salon serves my favorite tea sandwiches anywhere. Set inside a Georgian brownstone, the atmosphere feels both warm and refined—and if you ask nicely, you might even leave with a ghost story or two from the staff.

What to Do

Winter in New York also means it's easier to secure Broadway tickets. My sister and I had been waiting months to see Chess starring Lea Michele, Aaron Tveit, and Nicholas Christopher. With music by ABBA and powerhouse performances across the board, the show definitely did not disappoint. I went in looking forward to seeing Tveit, but I left with a new favorite Broadway star in Nicholas Christopher. Trust me—go see it.

On a separate trip with my friends, we discovered Baretto, which quickly became our new favorite spot for a late-night drink. Located above Midtown’s Fasano restaurant, the intimate jazz bar features live music every Friday and Saturday night, along with a menu of creative cocktails. We were blown away by the performances, and there may or may not be a video of me playing air saxophone floating around somewhere.

Like all things of desire, travel has its trends. One summer, it’s Italy; the next, the Greek islands. With nonstop connectivity and an algorithm that knows your weaknesses, it’s never been easier to book a ticket to whatever destination is flooding your feed. But the height of the season at these in-demand locales comes with its own friction: inflated airfares, impossible dinner reservations, and beaches that feel more like a content set than an escape. It’s not exactly logging off.

And yet, there are still places that exist just outside the cycle, destinations worthy of a bucket list but defined by a quieter allure. Canouan, a pint-sized island in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, is one of them.

Just 3.5 square miles in size, with a population of roughly 1,700 residents, Canouan sits in the southern Grenadines, a chain of islands stretching between Saint Vincent and Grenada. Framed by one of the Caribbean’s most pristine barrier reefs and rolling hills, the island feels both intimate and expansive, though its footprint remains intentionally small.

Unlike some Caribbean destinations that live and die by high season, Canouan operates on its own timeline. There is no dramatic swing between “on” and “off” months. Its position in the south keeps it largely outside the main hurricane belt, so late summer doesn't carry the same gamble it can elsewhere in the region. And while it sits within easy reach of Bequia and Mustique, islands long associated with Caribbean old-guard glamour, Canouan still feels like a secret.

Getting there requires one extra step, which is precisely the point. Most travelers fly into Bridgetown, Barbados, then board a small Grenadine Airways island hopper for the roughly hour-long flight. The plane skims over scattered cays and shallow reefs before dipping low over the water to land, and that transfer immediately shifts the pace to Island Time.

Accommodations on Canouan skew intentionally high-end, though in different registers. For larger groups, milestone birthdays, multigenerational trips, or simply a desire for privacy, renting a villa within Canouan Estate makes sense. The gated enclave stretches across the island’s hillsides and coastline, with sprawling private homes offering panoramic views and seclusion.

At the heart of the estate is Mandarin Oriental, Canouan, the island’s ultra five-star anchor. Every accommodation on property is a suite or villa, so even entry-level rooms feel expansive. You could check in and never leave, and many guests do. Between the Balinese-inspired spa, oceanfront real estate, and multiple on-site restaurants, the resort functions as its own contained world. A jetty extends into the water, often dotted with visiting yachts, and the open-air restaurant becomes a natural gathering point at sunset. The mood is relaxed but intentional, with a breezier, club-like energy that draws a creative, in-the-know crowd.

The island is ringed by one of the Caribbean’s largest living coral reefs, making snorkeling and scuba diving less an activity than an expectation. The water is startlingly clear, shallow in places, and calm enough that even a casual swim can turn into an encounter with coral and reef fish.

Charter a boat and circle the island, stopping at beaches like Godahl Beach, Shell Beach, and L’Ance Guyac. Most remain blissfully undeveloped, the kind of beachfront you step onto without scanning for an open chair. For a broader perspective, hike to Mount Royal, the island’s highest point. The climb is short, and the payoff expansive, with the Grenadines unfolding in every direction.

Spend an afternoon walking through Charlestown for a glimpse of local life, or linger at the Sandy Lane Yacht Club marina as boats come and go. Move between the beach and the pool without consulting the time. Book a spa appointment. Let the day stretch on until sunset.

What distinguishes Canouan from other Caribbean islands is not a single marquee attraction, but scale. The beaches feel unclaimed, the energy is not performative or overprogrammed, and there is space, both literal and figurative, on the sand and from the noise that can follow you on vacation.

Dining on Canouan reflects the island itself: small and rooted in Caribbean flavors. Expect grilled lobster in season, freshly caught mahi-mahi, conch, plantains, rice and peas, and rum poured generously. Several on-site restaurants let guests stay on the grounds for every meal, from seafood prepared with a formal touch to familiar international staples. One of the nicest meals on the island is at L’Ance Guyac, a secluded beachfront restaurant where seafood comes straight from the water and you dine with sand underfoot and the ocean directly in front of you. Tides Bar & Grill, located just above the beach, offers grilled seafood and Caribbean classics in a more relaxed setting, while Lagoon Café serves Mediterranean-influenced dishes overlooking Godahl Beach.

The quickest—and most scenic—way to explore an island is always by water. You’ll reach secluded coves without the long trek, stumble upon archaeological sites (which are common in Greece), and take in dramatic cliffs from a distance. Launching from the hotel’s northwest bay and cruising around the cove made for the perfect itinerary. We stopped at highlights like Crique de Soudas (accessible only by boat), Seitan Limania (a wildly beautiful and popular beach), and Katholiko Bay, home to Monastery Katholiko, which dates back to the 6th or 7th century.

My Crete Packing Essentials

On a recent press trip, a fellow journalist’s checked bag went missing somewhere between takeoff and arrival. An Opera House Outing

For those looking for a spring break getaway that feels softer, this is where Miami’s quieter counterpoints come into focus—places better suited to one-piece swimsuits and matching sets than your teeny bikini and heels. Enter Key Biscayne, an underrated enclave where those two desires—proximity to Miami and genuine escape—can coexist. Just a 15–20 minute drive across the scenic Rickenbacker Causeway from downtown, the island unfolds at a noticeably slower pace, with uncrowded beaches, expansive parks, and a calm that feels increasingly rare in this corner of Florida.

Unlike some of its more overtly seasonal neighbors—Palm Beach, for example—Key Biscayne isn’t simply a place to escape winter and then retreat from once the snow birds depart. It moves at a steady, year-round rhythm, offering just as much to enjoy beyond peak season as during spring break and the high winter months. Here’s where to stay, what to do, and where to eat and drink in Miami’s most understated coastal enclave.

Key Biscayne isn’t a destination defined by hotel sprawl or endless options. Accommodations are limited by design, which contributes to the island’s quieter, more residential feel. Where you stay largely depends on your travel style.

For those who prefer flexibility—especially families, longer stays, or anyone who likes having a kitchen—short-term rentals and Airbnbs remain a popular choice. Many are clustered near the beach or center of town, offering walkability and space without the formality of a resort.

For those who want a more contained experience, The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami, anchors the island. The beachfront property recently reopened following a $100 million renovation, its first comprehensive refresh in more than two decades. The update leans calm and contemporary, with light-filled public spaces, softened coastal tones, and large windows that keep the Atlantic in view throughout the day.

The resort is spread across a wide stretch of shoreline, which helps it feel unhurried even at capacity. There are two large pools—one more relaxed and adult-leaning, another designed with families in mind—along with beachside cabanas set close to the water. A newly redesigned spa sits slightly removed from the main flow of the property, making it easy to disappear for an afternoon, while several dining options allow guests to move easily between pool, beach, and long meals without leaving the resort.

Key Biscayne is not a place that demands an itinerary. Its appeal lies in the freedom to move slowly—or not much at all. Mornings are best spent outside.

Wildlife feels like part of the daily rhythm here, not something you have to seek out, and the island leans heavily into nature. Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park and Crandon Park anchor either end of the island, offering shaded bike paths, mangrove-lined trails, and wide stretches of beach that rarely feel crowded. Renting bikes and riding through the preserve is one of the easiest ways to get familiar with the island.

There’s also no pressure to be productive. Afternoons often revolve around a pool chair and a good book, broken up by a swim or a long lunch. Fishing—whether casually from shore or with a local guide—is another low-effort way to pass the time.

And when the urge for city energy hits, Miami is close enough to feel accessible. A drive over the causeway makes it easy to dip into the Miami Design District for galleries and shopping, or to stop by The Webster for a fashion fix before retreating back

The dining scene here is small but dependable, skewing toward places you return to rather than chase. The tone is relaxed, and the settings often do as much as the menus.

At the top end, Luma is one of the island’s most polished options. It’s a modern Italian restaurant with an open, ocean-facing dining room and a menu that sticks to the classics—pastas, seafood, and simply prepared dishes all executed well. The wine list is equally considered, with enough range to satisfy serious wine lovers and sippers alike.

Nearby, Paralía offers a Mediterranean alternative, drawing on Greek and Turkish coastal cooking with an emphasis on fresh fish, herbs, and citrus. It’s lighter, breezier, and especially good for an early dinner that turns into sunset drinks, thanks to its location just steps from the water.

For something casual and visited amongst the locals, Boater’s Grill, tucked inside Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, is a longtime favorite. The food is straightforward—grilled fish, sandwiches, cold drinks—but the setting, right on the water, makes it worth the trip.

Every evening, Bostani offers an authentic farm to table experience, with small tables situated within the hotel's very own garden. Easily one of my favorite meals, it's hard to describe just how tranquil it felt dining by candlelight next to an open kitchen and an enviable allotment. Meanwhile, Fiore Fine Dining provides a high-end gastronomy experience, with dining perching on the island's cliffs looking out over the Ionian Sea. And what resort would be complete without its very own wine cellar?

While Lesante Blu and Lesante Cape boast their very own private beaches, the island of Zakynthos has an incredible coastline. Regardless of whether you prefer palatial sandy landscapes or dramatic cliffs with rocky coasts, this particular Greek island features beaches perfect for explorers or travelers who never leave the resort.

Visit the Turtles

Zakynthos is home to the Mediterranean Marine Life Center, which is dedicated to protecting the endangered caretta caretta loggerhead sea turtles. The island is a known nesting ground for the turtles, and visitors might be able to view the beautiful creatures during boat trips or while snorkling, for instance. Of course, any tourism related to Zante's turtles should be focused on ensuring their safety and raising money for the preservation of their habitats.

Once open to the public, Navagio Beach, also known as Shipwreck Beach, is home to a destroyed vessel that's been on its shores since 1980. A lookout point on the cliffs above the beach offers views of the dramatic shipwreck, while some boat tours continue to allow visitors to see the beach, albeit from afar.

Alongside its own ancient Greek heritage, Zakynthos's rich history includes connections to Italy, France, and Germany, among other places. Having been under Venetian rule from 1479 until 1797, Zakynthos was given the nickname "Florence of Greece," with Italian culture influencing the island's traditions, architecture, and language.

After a devastating earthquake destroyed much of Zakynthos in 1953, the island required rebuilding. However, certain landmarks remain and are worth exploring, such as the Venetian Castle of Zakynthos, the ruins of which sit on a hill above the main town. And although it might occasionally veer into being a tourist magnet, Zante is a stunning port town featuring neoclassical architecture, amazing views, and connections to the island's past.

Basically, any trip to the Mediterranean would be incomplete without stopping on Zakynthos.

Last year was a rough one for me, for many reasons. Aside from the usual life stressors that accompany being a thirty-something woman in America in 2025, I was struggling to emerge from the depths of my grief after losing my dad in the spring. There is nothing that can prepare you for that type of heartache, even when you're surrounded by boundless love and support from your friends and loved ones. The toll it takes on your heart, and your mental health, cannot be overstated. Still, after several months cocooning myself in my Brooklyn apartment, I found myself with the opportunity to travel to Japan, a dream destination that I had always wanted to visit. It felt like a sign that maybe, just maybe, the weight of my circumstances wouldn't continue to feel like it had for the previous five months (namely endless and unyielding). In other words, when Shizu Okusa, the founder of Apothékary, calls, you answer—and then you get on the damn plane.

Though our circumstances for coming to Japan (or in Okusa's sake, coming back) are different, the purpose is relatively similar. "When shit hits the fan, you really have the opportunity to do an inventory of your mental health," she tells me over Zoom. The Wall Street alum knows a thing or two about a high intensity lifestyle. So, "I took some time off and I went to Japan." Her parents were both born and eventually emigrated to Canada separately (they met and married in Vancouver). But the call of her ancestral homeland never faded from Okusa's mind.

"I was just really curious about the traditions, and my family," she tells me. "My mom was a photographer and potter, and we kind of grew up on a farm because of the nature of my dad being a Japanese gardener. He brought Zen Japanese gardens to Canada. He used to make the clay for [her] pottery through the dirt of our farm. They would join forces to make everything that we ate from and everything that we ate, period, because everything was grown right there. So that was the real connection of nature."

Five years later, her healing journey to Japan ultimately inspired her latest business venture, Apothékary, a brand of herbal remedies that marry Japanese tradition with modern wellness. "It started to really come to be because of seeking a more natural form of remedy for my own mental health, which really [is connected] to stress and sleep," she says. "[Those] are the core pillars of wellness." She believed that there could be a better was to bring natural, ancient medicine that has existed for thousands of years, both rituals and product, to the market. But, ever a knowing businesswoman, Okusa understood that the American consumer had already grown wary of the seemingly endless supplement options and their lofty claims.

"The word 'supplements' just feels really dirty and not trusted, and [there is] a lot of skepticism behind it," she acknowledges. "But I think when we look at Japanese or Eastern medicine broadly, we don't think of it as a supplement, [or] as a category in those countries. It's really the form of healthcare." For better or worse, the pandemic inspired many people to seek out alternative forms of medicine, which Apothékary's line of tinctures offers, but the founder was still eager to revisit the in-person practices that are so central to the Japanese approach to health and wellness, and to her brand, and incorporate them into its ethos.

Now, fours years after those social distancing measures have been lifted, they very much are a core tenet of Apothékary, which is why I found myself, bleary-eyed but elated, stepping off a plane to join Okusa and a handful of fellow editors in Kyoto for a few Japanese rituals. "Kyoko is just an incredible bridge between ancient and modern traditions, and also science," she tells me. "You really get that juxtaposition with the shopping and modern technology, but you get the temples and then you get the shrines and then the meditation. That's kind of the feeling that I get with Japan—this authority of heritage meets the authenticity of culture."

Her goal for the three days we spent together? To help calm our frazzled Western nervous systems. "The whole journey East is around nervous system reset, but also building out how nature actually exists and anchoring each of these rituals with a element," she explains. "So we tied it to fire, water, air, and earth." That meant a guided breath work session, a visit to the Japanese onsen, a matcha tea ceremony guided by a monk, and a Kintsugi class, or the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with precious metals, which embraces the idea of wabi-sabi (finding beauty in the imperfections) and mushin (accepting change).

As I spent my final day with the group, painting a delicate line of gold down the side of a cracked tea cup, I realized how comfortable I felt, even 7,000 miles from home. Here, among former strangers in a bustling (if still very calm) city, full of hot tea and a few drops of Apothékary Mindcraft, my mind felt more at peace than it had in months.

With my phone tucked away in my bag and my hands preoccupied with the delicate work of mending something that was broken—but growing more beautiful by the minute—I allowed myself to take a deep breath. And then another. And then another, until I walked along the edge of the city's Kamo river, feeling, if not quite weightless, lighter than I had in very long time. If this is what it means to embrace Japanese wellness—slowing down, appreciating imperfection, experiencing more nature—even you can't always hop on a plane to the other side of the world, then I think 2026 will shape up to be a much softer, calmer, and wonderfully intentional year. But by all means, book a flight to Japan as soon as you can. I know that I'll be doing the same.

My Favorite Chic Yet Practical Totes

Wait… how did you pack all of that? That’s the question I get asked the most. Whether I’m at a wedding in Menorca, a work trip in Scottsdale, or a panel in London, someone will inevitably pull me aside and ask, to which I smile and say: I didn’t pack that much—I just packed smart.

I recently returned from an incredibly beautiful wedding held on the Balearic island of Menorca. I stayed at Son Vell, a restored 18th-century estate that’s one of the most stunning properties I’ve had the privilege to experience (think ancient stone walls, lush gardens, slow mornings, and candlelit dinners). And while everything about the trip was romantic and elevated, I was mostly wearing… the same outfit, just styled a hundred different ways.

I travel a lot. Between work, weddings, birthdays, speaking engagements, I’m on the road or in the air about 100 days a year. And yet, I rarely check a bag. Most trips, I show up with just a carry-on and a garment bag. That’s it. So, how do I do it? Ahead, I'm sharing my two hacks for traveling like a pro.

I swear by Pleats Please Issey Miyake for all of my travel outfits. I have the tanks, the trousers, the midi dresses, the long-sleeve tops, the culottes, the sweaters, etc. It’s an endlessly mixable capsule wardrobe that always looks elevated, no matter how exhausted I am. Plus, it all packs flat.

Ireland might not be the first place that comes to mind for a luxury escape, but with incredible five-star hotels, Michelin-starred dining, designer shopping, and the personal touches of Irish hospitality, this is one destination that shouldn’t be overlooked. In September, I headed to Dublin, Adare, and Killarney to see what made some of its most luxurious properties so special, and in the process, I fell in love with the people and culture in a way I didn’t expect.

My first experience in Ireland was decidedly less glamorous. During my college semester abroad in London, my friends and I took a “Blarney Bus” tour over a long weekend, which mostly consisted of nonstop drinking and staying in an absolutely terrifying hostel in Dublin. Let’s just say, Adare Manor it was not.

This time, pub culture was certainly part of the itinerary—but in a much more educated way. My group shared laughs over long, luxurious dinners, falconry experiences, and carriage rides through Killarney National Park. Each hotel stop—all members of The Leading Hotels of the World—reflected that local spirit.

When I travel, I typically try to find local hotels that embody the destination instead of a generic chain—and as members of The Leading Hotels of the World, each property I stayed in encompassed that feeling. Leading Hotels members are all independent properties that focus on bringing unique luxury experiences to their guests, and this was evident as I traveled across the country.

Dublin

With buzzy restaurants, high-end shopping, and plenty of culture to take in, Ireland’s capital is the ideal spot for a girls’ trip. My home base was The Merrion, where everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Barack Obama has stayed over the years.

Created by combining four 1760s homes, the property blends the best of historic architecture with a significant collection of 19th- and 20th-century art. The hotel even has a special “Art Tea,” where the pastries are inspired by the works hanging throughout the hotel. I was especially excited to see Andy Warhol’s portrait of Grace Kelly in The Merrion’s excellent Cellar Bar, and the two Michelin star Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud also features a notable art collection.

My room featured cozy touches like a fireplace and Georgian-inspired décor, and its location put me within a quick walk of plenty of shopping and attractions. My number-one goal was to see the Book of Kells at Trinity College, and after taking in the college’s historic library, I wandered around Grafton Street and the surrounding neighborhoods to check out the shopping.

I can't resist a good department store and Brown Thomas is Dublin's answer to Harrods, featuring every luxury designer you could possibly want. I ended up bringing home a pair of silver earrings from Mulberry's Dublin outpost, but didn't have time to get over to Kildare Village, Ireland's answer to the Bicester Village designer outlets located just outside of London.

Another Dublin stop was The Westbury, where none other than Taylor Swift stayed during the Eras Tour. Where The Merrion feels like stepping into an episode of Bridgerton, The Westbury has a more art deco feel, and I enjoyed some creative cocktails inspired by the city and an unforgettable butter chicken masala at its WILDE restaurant.

The Perfect Pint Tour might have been my favorite part of visiting Dublin. Our guide, Keith, told us all about the history and traditions surrounding the pubs we visited and the local area, and we got to sit in the special snug at the historic John Kavanagh pub—also known as Gravediggers—and even try our hands at pulling our own pints in The Oval Bar.

Adare

If Downton Abbey and Hogwarts Castle had a baby, you’d get Adare Manor. Located in the charming village of Adare, the former home of the Earls of Dunraven was sold in the 1980s and turned into a five-star hotel and golf resort. Walking into the grand main house feels like stepping into a private estate rather than a hotel, and this feeling extends throughout the property.

It comes as no surprise that Adare Manor was once home to a royal visit when King George V and Queen Mary (then the Duke and Duchess of York) visited in 1897. With cathedral-like, floor-to-ceiling windows, a huge clawfoot tub, and a gothic-princess vibe, my lavish room felt like staying in a castle.

The manor will host the 2027 Ryder Cup, and preparations were well underway for the event when I visited. But if golf isn’t your thing, there are plenty of activities to keep you busy, from archery to spa treatments to clay pigeon shooting. I was most excited to take part in the falconry experience and met some adorable new friends, including an eagle and a miniature owl with the very appropriate name of Tiny. Adare Manor is also home to a new Padel Club, where I tried out the quickly growing sport, with the building also housing a yoga studio, gym, and relaxing pool and hot tub.

One of the most memorable meals of my trip was dinner at The Oak Room, Limerick’s first Michelin-starred restaurant, and breakfast is served each day in the manor’s magnificent Gallery—one of the longest rooms in Ireland. Adare Manor even boasts its own luxury chocolate shop, Harry Lowes, named after the property’s former groundskeeper.

While you truly never need to leave the property, the village is within walking distance and features adorable thatched-roof shops and pubs. And with Adare located within an hour and a half of destinations like the Cliffs of Moher, Cork, and Blarney Castle, a range of day trips is certainly possible.

Killarney

For a taste of true Irish hospitality, the family-run Killarney Park hotel is the perfect place to stay while visiting the region. I wasn’t sure what to expect from Killarney but found myself blown away by the warmth of the people and the beauty of the surrounding national park. The hotel focuses on giving guests a true sense of place, and my suite was more like an apartment, with two fireplaces, a massive living room, and special touches that tied into the Irish landscape.

Located just steps from Killarney National Park and the lively town center, the hotel was the ideal base for exploring the area. The absolute highlight was a boat trip to Innisfallen Island with Gap of Dunloe Traditional Boat Tours. I couldn’t resist taking endless photos of Bob and Marley, the adorable golden cocker spaniels who joined us for a trip from Ross Castle to the stunning island. To get to the castle, my group took a jaunting car—a traditional horse-drawn carriage—through the park with Killarney Jaunting Tours and our adorable horse, Big John. In addition to experiencing the lakes, mountains, and forests, you’ll be entertained with plenty of Irish stories and humor.

As a royal editor, I was thrilled to visit Muckross House, where Queen Victoria famously stayed in 1861 and helped to jump-start the tourism industry in Ireland. The magnificent mansion is set right in the heart of Killarney National Park, and the views of the lake and mountains from the house couldn’t be better.

When it comes to restaurants, there’s no shortage of options in Killarney, and The Killarney Park is home to The Peregrine and The Garden Bar, where I enjoyed a number of seasonally inspired Irish meals throughout my stay. In town, J.M. Reidy’s is not your typical pub—it used to be a series of shops from the 1800s. After a delicious lunch, I headed through the maze of rooms to find an Irish storyteller who wove traditional tales into music and conversation as we sipped Irish coffees.

If you’re after nightlife, The Killarney Grand offers a piano bar, live Irish music, and a nightclub all in one building—ideal if your friends can’t agree on a vibe. And Celtic Steps—a high-energy show combining Irish dance, music and song—was the ultimate feel-good evening to wrap up my trip. Will I be back? Absolutely.

I love this spot for its old charm but modern conveniences: a Michelin-star restaurant, a private beach, and a spa. I spend my days swimming in the sea, exploring the town, and dining with picture-perfect views of the French Riviera. I go alone, but it’s great for couples or families. Pro tip: If you follow the long path outside the hotel, you’ll reach a hidden trail to the most beautiful view of Théoule from Point d’Aiguille—and there’s a secret beach you can access only from that path.

To know me is to understand that my favorite place in the entire world—over Paris, the South of France, or even Greece—is Turks and Caicos. Simply setting foot on the Caribbean island, which is a casual three and a half hour flight from New York, gives me an instant boost of serotonin. It’s my happy place, plain and simple. The weather is near-perfect, even during the off-season—I like to go in June or July. The water is crystal clear, and the food scene gets five stars (Vita is my must-try—they have the best prawn lemon pasta I’ve ever tasted).

If you need some inspiration on where to stay? Allow me to be your guide; I’ve hopped around to quite a few of the best resorts over the years. My number one draft pick for a wellness-centric, luxury stay that gives Private Island energy is Rock House, which features gorgeous, private villas that have been carved directly into the rock of the island. It’s secluded, romantic, and has an oceanfront yoga class that will remain a core memory of mine. If you’re traveling with family? Grace Bay Resorts is the only option—the staff is the nicest on the island, water sports are easily accessible, and you’ll have access to the best lamb tacos of your life. Wymara is my other personal favorite—myself and my extended family love to stay in the five-bedroom villa, experience the sound bath class, and take full advantage of en-suite water slide.

But because I’m a beauty editor, no vacation is complete without a spa treatment (or three). So I’ve spent my past few trips down in Turks and Caicos searching for the best facials, massages, spas, and shops on the island. Wymara Resort and Villas Spa

There are two main reasons I love this spa. First and foremost, there’s a little private outdoor relaxation space where you can curl up with a book and bask in the sun before or after your treatment. Second, it’s actually incredibly reasonably priced for the time you’ll have on the treatment table. The resort partnered with 111Skin earlier this year, too, so you know you’ll be in for a taste of true luxury with a mix of the brand’s regenerative skincare, iconic sheet masks, and targeted serums. I’m partial to the Depuffing Energy Facial because it includes a cryo treatment that cools my skin after a day in the sun.

Como Shambhala Retreat

A wellness resort that’s connected to Parrot Cay, this retreat deserves a whole day. You can experience workout classes, enjoy the jacuzzi, and take in some incredible views. That all being said, don’t leave without experiencing the Sundãri Intensive Healing Facial. The technique is based on Ayurvedic techniques (expect aspects of meditation to be integrated into the facial), and the skincare is ideal for sensitive or easily reactive skin.

Amanyara

Guests can partake in a special three-day detox program crafted by Novak Djokovic himself or opt in for private health assessments (think: White Lotus season 3 vibes), but you can also treat yourself to 90 minutes of pure bliss with a Twilight for Two couple’s massage (set against an idyllic ocean-view backdrop, of course) or a simple signature massage that the well-trained masseuse will craft to your needs and liking.

The Palms

Curious where the locals go to get some R&R on their off time? Per my inside sources, it’s always the Palms. While I haven’t personally tried out the spa there, I have it on good authority from trusted sources that the Four Palms Restorative Massage (aka two massage therapists working at once) is an out-of-body experience.

The Grace Bay Club Spa by L’Occitane

If you stay at Grace Bay Club, you’ll quickly realize there’s no shortage of L’Occitane, which just so happens to be one of my favorite French pharmacy brands. Not only is there bodycare, shampoo, and conditioner stocked in all the newly renovated (and very spacious) rooms on the property, but the spa is also exclusively partnered with the brand. Whether you’re popping by for a hot stone massage or a relaxing aromachologie massage (my personal favorite), you’ll find that the staff is incredibly well-trained, the space smells soothing, and every treatment is designed to truly help you unplug. I get a lot of massages as a beauty editor (work perk!), but I swear this was one of the most relaxing, perfectly pressured massages of my life—I walked out of my treatment floating. (PSA: if you stay at Rock House, a pro from Grace Bay Club’s spa will come to your villa for a private treatment—all you have to do is ask your concierge to set it up.)

The Spa at Seven Stars

I’d highly recommend getting a manicure and pedicure before flying out, but if you’re in a pinch, The Spa at Seven Stars does a great job. (You’ll find that a lot of the hotel spa menus don’t include mani/pedi services.) In addition to getting your nails in order, though, it’s important to call out that this spa is sponsored by Espa, a resort skincare brand that’s pretty well-known for its top-tier training. The products smell delightful (that traditional spa-like smell) and always leave my skin feeling supple and soft.

Best Blowout

Maxime Le Salon

Let me start this off with a PSA: you’re American Dyson will work with the outlets in Turks and Caicos. That being said, there aren't a ton of places on the island to get a blowout. But if you do want to treat yourself to a good hair day, the locals love Maxime Le Salon, which is situated in the main part of town (and right next to my favorite ice cream shop, Giggles). The salon offers blowouts, highlights, cuts—everything you could need and then some.

Best Culturally Immersive Beauty Experience

Rock House Sunrise Yoga

While I’m not usually a workout-while-on-vacation type (although I’m jealous if you are), I make an exception for yoga set to the prettiest backdrop. Rock House, which does have a state-of-the-art gym, offers sunrise yoga on its dock. The water on this side of the island is devoid of any water sports or boats, so it’s just you, the sunrise, and the soft ripple of the waves. It’s truly the most peaceful experience. If you want to take advantage of a Caribbean sunrise without the sweat, ask your concierge to arrange an outdoor massage for you, which can take place in your private villa overlooking the ocean. Once you’ve wrapped, I highly recommend walking up the steps to Vita, which offers the best breakfast on the island. The omelets, fresh fruit, and the blueberry muffin are some of my personal favorites.

Wymara Sound Bath

I love a sound bath, which is when a guide leads you through meditation to the vibrations of sound bowls. But my family had never experienced one until I booked us a group session at Wymara two summers ago. Let me just say: everyone from my 83-year-old grandmother to my very skeptical father had the best time. My brother even fell asleep on the mat. It’s a great pre-dinner activity for the whole family.

Best Shopping Destination

Coco Boutique

With an outpost at Rock House and Grace Bay Club (both of which have completely different merchandise, the former inspired by the Mediterranean, the latter taking more inspo from France), Coco Boutique is a must-see. Not only do they carry the best-smelling tropical-scented sunscreen of all time, Ocean Potion Suncare, but they also have all the Sun Bum you could dream of. As for clothes? You’ll find an assortment of luxury brands, including Zimmerman, My Beachy Side, Maygel Coronel, Andres Otalora, and so many more.

Ports of Call

If you want to stroll around a shopping center, take a little trip to Ports of Call. Here, you’ll find a handful of ice cream shops, souvenir spots, and little cafés. There’s also a painted picture of the island on one of the walls that makes for a great family photo opp.

For all the Hamptons polo fields and Cape Cod clam shacks, Nantucket stands out as one of the East Coast’s most cinematic slices of Americana. Salt-box shingle houses surrounded by hydrangeas are weathered to a charming silvery hue, and bluffs along the coast reveal themselves as you arrive by ferry or plane. Cobblestone streets wind through a downtown that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. But beneath its postcard-perfect exterior, Nantucket also has a deep, storied history: once the world’s leading whaling port, it shipped ships across oceans and sent its oil into European lamps. Frederick Douglass gave his first speech here in 1841, alongside pioneering women abolitionists like Anna Gardner and Eliza Starbuck Barney. The island’s native communities also played a crucial role, shaping its culture in ways that still echo today.

Recently, television shows like Sirens have highlighted Nantucket’s preppy side, while Hill House Home and Dôen have made themselves at home on Main Street, and the lightship basket necklace—once a practical sailor’s craft—has come back as a sought-after status symbol. But fall is when the island reveals its more authentic self. The tourists fade away, and the year-round community—fishermen, artists, preservationists, and shopkeepers—take center stage. The Americana charm remains, but in autumn, it feels more lived-in than curated —a place still rooted in history, salt air, and a quiet appreciation for the destination that has shaped much of the country’s history. Summer is golden, of course—but early fall shows the island at its most captivating, when the pace slows just enough for you to linger, look closer, and see Nantucket in its true light.
