On June 29, Chanel's It bag took one of fashion's most divisive designs under its calfskin leather wing: Kaia Gerber's Ugg boots reached ballet flat levels of luxe with her Maxi Flap.

Six weeks after Chanel's best-seller joined Gerber's collection, the two are still very much in the honeymoon phase. At this point, Gerber's Uggs collection is nearing its fifth birthday. Contrary to fellow Ugg girls, Selena Gomez, Dua Lipa, and Jennifer Lawrence, she skipped right past calf-length Classic Short II boots in favor of shorter shafts. Pairing under-$200 Uggs with buzzy designer bags has always been a Kaia Gerber Classic. In 2021, not one, not two, but three different Celine purses were spotted on L.A. strolls with her cropped, pull-tab Ugg boots.

She didn't just style any Uggs, but the Tasmans that set off the brand's 2022 resurgence. While most fashion girls—think Rihanna and Dua Lipa—prefer limited-edition versions of the indoor-outdoor shoe, Rosalía chose the black, wallet-friendly classics. Ugg slippers are a pre- and post-Paris Fashion Week essential in Gigi Hadid, Elsa Hosk, and Lily Rose-Depp's survival kits. Posh Spice wore an almost-identical turtleneck and trousers from her own label to her London flagship store in November. I have fallen hard for early 2000s fashion, and there is no turning back. When I added pink Uggs (a shoe that I hadn’t looked twice at in over a decade) to my holiday wishlist this past December, it felt like the icing on my personal style cake and an official testament to this awakening. Realistically, my favorable way of dressing has shifted, thanks to nostalgia for an era I never fully embraced and a Pinterest board full of early-aughts fashion campaigns and Paris Hilton paparazzi shots.

Now that I have secured the pink Uggs (thanks to my boyfriend and hours spent scouring the Internet before landing the perfect pair), I can reflect on why this style feels right all these years later. Though it has been argued that fashion in the 2020s no longer looks solely to the runways for inspiration, they still very much matter. (Cue The Devil Wears Prada’s cerulean monologue.) As a stylist and writer by trade and wardrobing enthusiast by passion, it’s my duty to interpret these ideas and find ways for them to resonate with the everyday living and wearing of clothes. I still get a burst of energy anticipating the latest “drop” of a new season, especially from designers that tend to set the tone for the cultural zeitgeist and push forward a point of view we may not understand right out the gate, but are also prepared to be sick of. That’s fashion for ya!

For Spring 2026, I was surprised and delighted to see a lot of interesting styling propositions, rather than super trendy or unrealistic looks, which speaks to my “shop-your-closet” ethos. I was even more surprised and delighted to see a ton of layering—perfect for the long and drawn-out chill of the New England climate that envelops my home and drives my day-to-day dressing. (A mild winter basically continues through May, so I rely heavily on inventive layering to hold my interest until bare legs season.)

In the bleakness of January, I drew from three runway looks that fed my investigative styling craving, and left me with fashion crumbs to satiate me sartorially until the need for layers gives way: Prada’s colorful pile-on, Loewe’s shirts-on-shirts-on-shirts, and Thom Browne’s heavy-handed stripes. These all felt very already-in-my-closet-able and, dare I say, quite wearable? Here’s how to do it.

Colorblocking Layers

Miuccia Prada is my first point of reference for styling just about anything. I can always count on her to serve up something interesting and, in most cases, somewhat accessible. Prada—which she now co-designs with Raf Simons—is rife with cultural references spanning several decades and lifestyles, which usually include beautifully designed staples that can be easily replicated in affordable ways. (No shade to Prada whatsoever.)

Cobalt blue and bright red underpinnings gave this outfit that pop-of-color energy, while the seafoam green Howlin’ wool sweater and a smattering of otherwise “boring” old reliables in black, white, and tan grounded the look in reality. It felt effortless and not very try-hard for an outfit that can pretty much handle any social outing this winter and spring throws my way.

For the purposes of this exercise, I jumped to the colorblocking layers of the Spring 2026 collection to build my look from pieces I had in my closet already. I used a formula I found in most of the looks: mixing primary pops, pastels, and neutrals, split evenly throughout my look.

Shirts-On-Shirts-On-Shirts

Upon reviewing Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez’s buzzy debut at Loewe, I was immediately intrigued by the layering of cotton button-downs, and was set on trying this out.

Wearing three shirts was surprisingly warm on a 20-degree day, but I did feel a little kooky, I won’t lie. (Note: They absolutely cannot be fitted. Go oversized, and your elbow crease will thank you.)

The original outfit paired this sartorial risk with an anorak and no pants, so I had to improvise with a boxy wool coat that felt Loewe-esque, black leggings, and my favorite old Céline sock booties to create that streamlined leg, but for winter. I added a pop of bright color in my handbag for another nod to the primary colors peppered throughout the collection and a wintry hat to bring this back to the reality of the current season. I look forward to warmer days to try these layered shirts again with a lighter jacket on top—but maybe just two next time, to ease outside observers into the idea, and definitely with tiny shorts so the hems can peek out, mimicking other looks seen on the runway.

Super Stripes

Thom Browne’s fantastical shows are always thrilling to attend, and the extravagance of the masterful looks fail to disappoint. What I do find interesting about the collection is that, once you break it all down, most of the pieces are based on a very simple code that seldom has changed in the 25 years the brand has been in business: tweed suits, graphic piped blazers, cricket sweaters, and pleated skirts, usually blown up or shrunken in proportions to give them an offbeat twist.

I definitely wanted to see if I could pull this off, but, unfortunately, I didn’t have enough striped outerwear to really give this the bold vibe reflected on the runway. Still, I liked the reality of where I landed.

I took some of my favorite Sacai pieces to bring this to life, including a mixed-striped shirt dress and funky purple wool jacket with contrasting leather piping. I added an old Dries van Noten vertical striped wool skirt on top, and grounded it with some black leather accessories. I think the key to keeping this from going too nuts is making sure all the lines are running the same direction. (I tried bringing in something with horizontal stripes, and it just looked frantic.) I will definitely wear this for a daytime friend date or dinner with family. I don’t think anyone could really object to too many stripes.

Step aside, jeans. Leggings are already the most popular celebrity pants of 2026. This week, everyone from Kylie Jenner and Ana de Armas to Dakota Johnson and Jennifer Lawrence have styled at least one pair from their athleisure drawer. On January 7, Lawrence took the coziness up a notch in an elevated take on the common denominator in every closet: the leggings and Ugg boots outfit.

Comfort-first fashion girls have always known Uggs and leggings were made to be coupled up. Now, J.Law finally gave the duo its deserved close-up. A Heather gray crewneck and Alo Yoga's Airlift Leggings served as her look's base layers. The $134 black bottoms featured a high-rise waistline, which remained hidden beneath her oversize long-sleeve.

Next, the Die, My Love actor leveled up her basics with The Row's $5,690 cashmere Delores Coat in butter yellow. Lawrence's look jumped to five-figure status once a rare burgundy Lady Bag from The Row joined the mix. (She's getting a good return on the custom, $33,000 alligator investment this week.)

Each sculpting leg of Lawrence's Alo leggings slid smoothly into her Ugg Classic Short II Boots. The suede, shearling-lined staples matched the Chestnut color of her Micro Boots, which she debuted on Jan. 5. Her $190 tan Classic Shorts also appear to be newbies on her shoe rack—though in 2022, she adored their now sold-out, navy-colored counterparts.

Lawrence is the latest A-lister to trade Ugg slippers for winter-approved Classic Short II boots, following Lily Rose Depp, Dua Lipa, Madison Beer, and more. But few stars have yet to pair them with leggings. So far, oversize jeans or sweatpants have been their top choice.

For Lawrence, 2025 was a surprisingly legging-less year (at least in public). Instead, she tested even sportier alternates, including baggy pinstripe trousers, the track pants trend, or La Ligne's Colby sweatpant-jogger hybrid.

Wide-leg elastic The Row pants, a puffer jacket from Toteme, and a purple scarf began her winter-wear layers. The slipper trend became the obvious partner for her casual, yet four-figure outfit.

Until I moved to New England, I didn’t realize how big of a commitment sweater season was. With no exaggeration, my sweater wardrobe is in strong rotation from about 9 out of the 12 months of the year. That said, I opened up my carefully stored sweater wardrobe earlier this fall with a pit in my stomach: I don’t actually want to wear ANY of these.

I like to think of myself as a responsible consumer, wearing pretty much everything I own into the ground. Not to say I’m exceptionally rough on things—I do try pretty hard to take great care of pieces that I think I’ll have forever—but heavy rotation due to lack of space can be tough on clothes. I frequently repair pieces, and generally like a mended aesthetic when I’m dressing pretty casually. Lucky for me, my sister is an expert-level knitter, and has darned many of my go-to’s out of the kindness of her heart. (My nagging also helped.) But sometimes, being the steward of threadbare pieces doesn’t do much for the creative soul.

I think I have reached my limit. I examined my sweater collection carefully, and there is no shortage of pattern, color, and texture. Basics are my Achilles heel, and, while patterned sweater doesn’t help much in repeat wear, it generally brings me joy. (Also, I find the latter to be way easier to wear than solid colors.)

After putting some of my old reliables back into the secondhand market and recycling those beyond further repair, it was time to consider some freshies. Following a formula of tried-and-true “patterns," I replenished the gaps, and am now encouraging readers to not shy away from busy sweaters—rather, embrace the fun and versatility these pieces bring in some of the most bleak days of the year. Here are five sweater outfits that I find hold up through repeat wear during the winter.

Striped Sweaters

A stripe acting as a neutral is a sartorial take I’ll take with me to the grave. For my sweater re-ups, I decided to shift away from my usual nautical and dabble in more collegiate stripes. I had to go straight to the source: Polo Ralph Lauren (via the Real Real).

Burgundy, navy, and gold were never the colors of any school I attended, but it seems like the School of Ralph owns this combo. I’ve seen styles in these colorways over the years (the brand has a few versions in its vintage capsule online), and, after I bought mine from the Real Real, I inception-ed myself into getting my kid an accidentally-matching one from Thredup.

I decided to “Ralph it up” even more when styling this sweater with a white linen maxi skirt, cowboy boots, a shearling trapper, a slick black leather belt and bag, and silver accessories. I know it will also look great with jeans or knit sweats on “throw-on-and-go” kind of days. This one may be my cartoon character choice of the season—watch this space.

Argyle Sweaters

A forever classic that has elbowed its way back into the fashion zeitgeist with appearances on the recent Miu Miu and Celine runways, argyle sweaters are feeling really right for right now. And I wanted in on it!

Damson Madder has been on my radar for its sustainability practices, and its take on the style in a punchy bright blue is a perfect marriage of my craving for something trendy that's also made with intention. (The 100% wool construction follows the responsible wool standard.) I paired it with my victorious Alaïa sample sale navy velour leggings, and played with some colorblocking by adding a Lindquist bag, olive socks, and a neutral sneaker. I also think this one will be fun to style over a slip dress with tall boots for a cozy winter date night or with shorts, socks, and loafers come spring.

Intarsia Sweaters

Intarsia (when a picture is woven into a knit) goes hand in hand with nostalgia, since these sweaters often feature childlike or scenic imagery that feels sweet and playful. My thoughtful friend Jenny tipped me off to this L.L. Bean style that has an intarsia dog nearly identical to my own sweet Peggy girl. I went oversized on this incredibly soft 100% cotton rollneck to give it a little more edge, and immediately added it to a classic “short skirt, long jacket” combo. I topped it off with some elf-like winter accessories, like a pompom hat and these chunky loafers from the recent Ugg x Sacai collaboration. The fact that it's made from a washable cotton makes it ideal to throw on with leggings on days I’m with my toddler, when a smudge of yogurt and/or playground dirt is inevitable.

Fair Isle Sweaters

While most of the iterations popping up everywhere are not knit on the Scottish island of which the style originated, it’s hard to resist that handmade-ish quality Fair Isle sweaters evoke. Sometimes this particular pattern can really scream “Christmas” to me, which gets a little awkward from January on, but it’s great to repeat all November and December long.

This shrunken one from Alex Mill is super intricate, crafted from a very soft merino wool. It reminds me of just a perfect vintage find. I tried to make it a little more kooky with a graphic pair of striped Junya Watanabe sweatshirt jeans, a flash of a red sock, suede boat shoes, and a vintage Chanel backpack to anchor the look. Popping it on over a turtleneck with jeans is a no-brainer, but I also could see myself wearing it with a pleated skirt and lace tights for a round on the holiday party circuit.

Cricket Sweater

A riff on the classic uniforms of the sport, a cricket sweater proves to be anything but boring. This graphic cable-knit is not exactly another stripe, but it’s not really a basic, either, which appeals to me greatly. I called upon Mr. Lauren once again for a fresh take, and love his version in cotton for easy maintenance, even if it’s white.

It’s hard not to feel kind of posh in one, but I also didn’t want to be super fussy. I grabbed a striped shirt and an old Saint Laurent denim skirt, and added a few prissy accessories, like a silk scarf and a pair of two-tone Chanel boots, which helped transition this otherwise preppy knit nicely into after work drinks with friends. Because of its weight and breathability, this one might actually be the winner for year-round wear! I can definitely see myself grabbing it for cool summer nights over a floral mini dress.

When I think of Aspen, Colorado, I imagine Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber's après-ski outfits or Kylie Jenner's fur coats. I also picture Ugg outfits of the comfy, cozy, and heavily layered variety: the type for snuggling up next to a chalet's fire with a glass of champagne as snow falls outside. Here's what's really surprising: Even at the height of their (renewed) popularity, you can score tons of Ugg deals for Black Friday and Cyber Monday. In fact, they're actually some of the best boot deals you can find over the biggest shopping weekend of the year now that it's finally here.

Ugg's Cyber Sale has kicked off, which means that shoppers can get discounts on select styles (sometimes of 50 percent or more!) on tons of winter-ready booties and slippers. The sale will be running through Cyber Monday, which falls on December 2. With that being said, we scoured UGG's website (and the rest of the internet) for the best Ugg boots deals around.

For instance, if you love Lopez's platform Uggs, turn to sites like Nordstrom and DSW for similar styles. Now you can emulate her casual day-off look—Birkin bag not included, naturally. There's also the time she styled platform boots with intentionally-dirty jeans (and yes, her exact pair is on sale).

Even if you're not shopping for Ugg boots specifically, you can still snag other styles on sale, both on Ugg's website and elsewhere. Think: cozy slippers like the ones that Gerber was recently spotted in. They're the perfect option if you're dealing with trending sneaker fatigue but still want a comfortable wear-everywhere option. They're super easy to team with other loungewear essentials like black leggings and cozy-as-anything sweatshirts.

What’s On Sale for Cyber Monday at Ugg?

Some people may not want to hear it, but the numbers don't lie: Ugg boots are now a capital-F fashion trend. Late last year, style statistician Data, But Make It Fashion reported that the shearling-lined shoes were up 290 percent in popularity, popping up on Pinterest mood boards, across Google searches, and yes, magazine shoe trend round-ups. They've also maintained a hold over the celebrity set, with everyone from Kendall Jenner to Dua Lipa to Rihanna wearing theirs with The Row, Hermès, and John Galliano-era Dior.

Adding to the controversial but beloved boot's comeback is its crossovers at fashion week. Over email, Ugg president Anne Spangenberg said Ugg boots were "included in the renowned Spring 2025 fashion shows from Elena Velez, Yueqi Qi, and Tokyo James, and spotted on the likes of actress Chloë Sevigny, models Alex Consani and Precious Lee, and rapper Doechii" throughout the season.

For those who knew where to look, though, there have long been signs of a ​modern Ugg Renaissance. The first came in Fall 2018, with Ugg boots walking at Fashion Week in collaboration with the Parisian brand Y/Project, followed by more strategic team-ups with insider favorites like Eckhaus Latta in 2019 and Telfar in 2021. Then came arguably the most viral Ugg outfit in the brand’s 46-year history: In September 2022, Bella Hadid walked around Manhattan wearing Ugg’s Mini Platform Boots with a leather jacket and men’s briefs.

Hadid’s underwear and Uggs outfit—worn while casually eating a slice of New York pizza without a care in the world—catapulted Ugg boots from a throwback style coasting on the coattails of Y2k nostalgia to a mainstream shoe trend with mass appeal. Following the supermodel’s outing, the $160 mini platform boot became Ugg’s top footwear style for Q3 of 2022. It soon sold out across retailers nationwide, much to the chagrin of any Zillenials who had them on their holiday wish lists.

I vividly remember walking around Soho that fall and seeing clusters of Hadid’s disciples filming TikTok fit checks on the miniature chunky platform. The sight struck me as especially uncanny because it mirrored a middle-school version of me doing a similar shoot with my tall, chestnut Uggs for a friend’s Facebook album.

Cut to now, on the cusp of 2026, and Uggs are just as coveted as they were when I was in middle school. But it still begs the question: Outside the insider and celebrity arena, can ordinary people wear Ugg outfits out of the house? Can we regular folk style a shearling boot or slipper look chic and cool, not frumpy and as if we've given up on getting dressed?

On my quest to find out, I combed through hundreds of street style images and spoke to Ugg aficionado Kylie Garbourg, an Australian fashion content creator who has been wearing the brand since she was a kid. After hours of research, I found my definitive answer: Yes, smart, polished-looking Ugg outfits that anyone—and I genuinely do mean anyone—can wear do, in fact, exist. Rich-Looking Coat + Uggs

If you aren't already following Kelly Rutherford, please take a few moments to do so. The actress is known for her minimal, expensive-looking (and -costing) style—as evidenced by this rich-looking coat and jeans combo paired with suede slippers. Recreate Rutherford's look in an outfit with mini Ugg boots and a faux fur-trimmed coat that has a mob wife energy.

Strategic Base Layers + Uggs

Garbourg's personal favorite idea for a Ugg outfit "starts with a simple base, such as jeans and a tee shirt, and then another layer that elevates the look [and] matches the tone of the boots—a trench coat, a brown leather jacket, or a cream sweater," she says. "I also like to utilize accessories like belts and a bright handbag to add intentional touches."

Cardigan + Long-Sleeve + Uggs

"When styling my Ugg boots, I like to make sure that the outfit matches the shoe's aesthetic," says Garbourg. "For example, you don't want to skew too formal; otherwise, it may look funky and not make sense with a pair of Uggs." Hailey Bieber epitomized the Sydney-based style influencer's note with a casual outfit of chestnut platform Uggs, a simple long-sleeve, and a nubby brown cardigan—a balanced mix of comfort and cool. Color Trends + Uggs

A rule of thumb when styling a riskier or more controversial trend is to balance it out with timeless elements that ground the style. With a pair of cozy, some would say "ugly" Ugg boots, butter yellow and corporate gray—two of fashion's favorite and most consistent color trends—are smart additions.

Speaking of colors: Garbourg advises to keep a consistent tonal palette when styling the off-beat boot. "Definitely have fun styling different outfit combinations with the boots, but try to incorporate pieces that complement each other so the look feels cohesive. A great way to elevate the outfit is to have all your accessories either match the color of the boots or some element of your look," she says. Last winter, Jennifer Lopez opted for emerald green, a natural shade that complemented her caramel-colored platform Ugg boots.

The ever-iconic Chloë Sevigny wore Ugg's New Heights boots with the bubble skirt trend at a MYTH magazine celebration during fashion week last September. So, my logic goes: If the It-girl-to-end-all-It-girls can wear the lambskin boots and a frothy mini to a major industry event, then I can wear the same for a day spent simply checking off my to-dos.

Black Leather Bomber + Dark Denim + Uggs

Here's another great two-trends-in-one Ugg styling idea: Try the leather bomber jacket and dark wash denim trends in one fell swoop. There's a reason fashion people have called on black as a chic cure-all for centuries; it's a simple, distraction-free neutral that doesn't scream for attention. It's quiet—and the color's sleek capabilities extend to a pair of Ugg boots, too.

Winter Whites + Uggs

Rutherford's winter white ensemble is one of my personal favorites, particularly as a blank canvas to wear with Tasman Ugg slippers (peep the pop of red) during errand runs on gloomy days. Ugg president Spangenberg concurred: "While some might see the colder months as a time to stay inside or limit activity, we design Uggs to allow consumers the opportunity to play, move, have fun, and express themselves outside." In other words, this is an Ugg outfit that begs to be worn outside, not tucked away indoors.

Conversation Coat + Sweater + Uggs

This sunshine yellow coat, colorful crochet sweater, and shearling Ugg slippers pairing also ranks high on my must-try-for-myself list. The bright coloring and intricate knitwear round out the casual footwear, making the overall ensemble feel balanced and suitable to wear out of the house.

V-Neck Sweater + Preppy Bottoms + Uggs

Doechii's bubble skirt, V-neck sweater, and Ugg boots grouping is one that maybe wouldn't work on paper—yet, when assembled together and worn with the rapper's signature too-cool-to-care attitude, it does. Recreate the preppy outfit by swapping a frothy micro-mini bubble skirt for tailored trousers.

Uggs, one of the most beloved and controversial shoes of our modern time (a basic for “basics”, scoffed at for their gnome-like aesthetic, and deeply associated with toxic '00s-era tabloid celebrity style), have been a wardrobe staple of mine for nearly 20 years. To me, they are an adorable, warm, and irreplaceable comfort essential—I will never quit Uggs!

One of my first pairs was purchased on sale from Kitson’s (an L.A.–based boutique turned celebrity fashion watering hole that has recently been disseminating alt-right information on their Instagram—yikes!). I chose the highly-coveted “sand” color as an alternative to my darker “chestnut” color for when I needed to lighten up a look. Despite heavy wear over the span of two decades, they’ve remained in relatively good shape. Still, they looked quite mushy and darker in spots than others—time for a bath!

When, in November, UGG announced its "UGGrenew” in-house initiative to restore previously-loved Uggs, I knew this would be an excellent opportunity to revive my beloved pair. The brand has partnered with NuShoe, a premium shoe repair company to offer three tiers of service based on the condition of the boot: Renew ($80), a “complete, handcrafted restoration” that includes adding new bindings, outsole, and steam cleaning and deodorizing inside and out; Restore ($60), steam cleaning and a new outsole; Refresh ($40), just the steam clean. 

Currently this service is available for “Classic” style Ugg boots, but the company says it will be expanding to several colorways and styles as the program develops. Wearers are encouraged to schedule their appointments online at UGG.com and ship via a provided label.

The company gives each pair a tracking number and monitors each stage of its process to ensure there are no mix-ups of seemingly identical products. (My shoes are a legacy pair, after all, so I was nervous!) Because they were generally in good shape, NuShoe decided to treat them to the “Restore” package. They scrubbed them down in a steam cleaner using a specially formulated detergent that has a lot of lanolin in it—as does sheepskin—and added a new UGG-provided sole. They shipped them back to me in nearly pristine condition.

Eric Neuner, president of NuShoe, alludes to the suffering of the shoe repair industry over the course of his 27 years in business, due to the “disposable nature of society.” But in the urgent call for more sustainable consumption, repair services like his are  regaining popularity, especially with younger consumers. He actually brought his teenage daughter into his initial pitch meeting with UGG, where she shared her generation’s understanding of their purchases’ impact and the Right to Repair, proving that this is the direction consumption is headed. “She really did a good job,” says Neuner. 

Before taking advantage of a repair service, Neuner suggests investing in the UGG care kit, and highly recommends using the protectant spray prior to wearing a new pair. This brought to memory my post-holiday ritual in high school, doing this for all gifted pairs my peers and I received. Neuner clarifies that protectant spray is not a waterproofing process, so Uggs should not be worn in rainy or snowy weather: “It’s not a classic boot to be wearing in those conditions.” 

The goal of the UGGrenew program is to eliminate landfill waste of Ugg boots and to be leader alongside other companies of robust repair or “take-back” circular programs, similar to ones Timberland and Rothy’s have implemented recently. Neuner shared with me some extraordinary before-and-afters of boots in far worse conditions than mine, and there is no reason anyone should be tossing their heavily-loved Uggs while this service exists. I also think this could be a game-changer for anyone who might buy a pair of used Uggs on the resale market. The early-aughts are back!
