As someone whose personal style typically stands out in a crowd, it may come as a surprise that my latest pattern obsession is camouflage. I blame my affinity for the early 2000s as the culprit for my newfound love of the subdued print. Also to blame is my boyfriend, who taught me the pattern’s history and that there are many different types of camo. Whether it’s a cargo pant in traditional M81 Woodland (a symbol of ‘90s counterculture) or sweatpants in Realtree-inspired camouflage (a commercialized print developed for hunting), I believe that the styling options of camo are endless.

For me, it’s important to incorporate color (I usually go for pink) and elements of femininity when wearing the otherwise muted and somewhat masculine print. One of my go-to looks features Still Here jeans in the Outside pattern with a fuchsia Balenciaga logo sweater. On other days, I have added girliness to a head-to-toe Realtree moment with a pink puffer jacket, Uggs, and a Dior bowling bag. Back in my editor days, I even rocked a camouflage Canada Goose puffer with leather pants to New York Fashion Week. As long as there is something to balance out the toned-down nature of the print, it feels just right to me.

Add Pink

I may be biased, but my natural inclination is always to pair camouflage with pink. I love the contrast of the darker print with something brighter and more me. Whether it’s a hot pink Balenciaga sweater, a metallic City bag, or Jean Paul Gaultier mesh sleeves, the combo is, and always will be, my go-to.

Go Girly

M81 camouflage is often associated with the military, so it tends to lean a bit masculine. I like to offset that with my most feminine and girly pieces. Think: pink Versace heels, a vintage Dior corset, and a cropped fur coat or a candy-hued puffer.

Choose a Variety of Hues

If wearing darker colors and patterns is not for you, don’t fear. Some of my favorite brands have offered up camo in brighter, happier hues. Balenciaga’s pink peplum shirt and a grey-and-white Marc Jacobs hoodie are some of my most-worn camo pieces. And I am always on the hunt for more ways to incorporate camo that fits my maximalist aesthetic.

I'm the first to admit that I have a shopping problem. Give me a vacation, a dinner party, or insert-event-here, and I will have absolutely no issue spending more money than I should to curate the perfect capsule wardrobe. But when I started planning my birthday trip to Aspen, I struggled—not with the fur coats and Moon Boots (that’s the fun stuff), but with the practical basics necessary for winter sports.

I skipped actual skiing (too clumsy), and instead went snowmobiling and snowshoeing. The attire needed remained the same, and let me just say: The gear needed to prepare for a winter trip like this is no joke. The beauty editor in me knew I needed special ski-approved skincare to protect my skin from the strong sun on the slopes, but I quickly realized I needed special socks, gloves, base layers, mid layers, practical snow boots—I could go on.

Rather than rambling, though, I’ve decided to make the shopping guide I wish I had. These 15 items (and a ton of vacuum-seal bags) include everything you need for a successful ski trip.

Base Layers

Technically, you can wear any basic workout set as a base layer for outdoor winter activities, but if you want to be technical, the pants and top you put on first should be equal parts insulating and water-wicking. I packed a mix of well-fitting black separates that matched with everything, as well as some trendy pieces for when I was going straight from the slopes into après.

Mid Layers

This is a category I had no idea even existed until I got into the nitty-gritty of packing for my Aspen trip. They’re not always necessary (it’s been unseasonably warm this season), but because it does get about 15 degrees colder at the top of the mountain, the extra jacket or wool sweater can frankly make all the difference.

Ski Suits

I had absolutely zero problems with my ski suit search. Personally, I stuck to neutral colors so I could switch my base layers in and out, but next season, I plan on adding a pop of color to the mix.

Snow Boots

They’re definitely the bulkiest item to pack, but trust me: You wear these boots more than you think. I ended up walking around town in mine almost every day. I’d recommend one stylish pair for après or daytime and a second, more practical, narrow one for actual winter sports.

Accessories

My appreciation for a warm pair of socks and gloves has quadrupled after this trip. Don’t forget a pair of HeatTech socks, wool socks, and chunky gloves—they’re not the chicest, most exciting item to pack, but they keep your hands so much warmer.

Gather ‘round, children. There was a time when people dressed to board an airplane. To be clear, I’m not in favor of that coming back; I fold, tuck, and cocoon my way through a long flight, so a well-ironed suit has no chance of surviving the way I inhabit seat 14A. Not because there’s a gala, a runway, a fashion week, or even a birthday, but simply because we said so. So, I’m proposing we create a new ritual (look at me diving right into the Year of the Horse!): enter the museum day.

Winter feels made for chic museum day outfits. While many default to denim and sneakers (and I get it), I’m going for more composed this season. My personal favorite museum is the Frick Collection in New York City. I like to pretend I live there and dress accordingly in a long wool coat and gloves tucked into a structured bag. I do a lipstick check before entering the gallery, my heels clicking against all those marble floors. The artwork just looks different when I’m standing in front of it in heels and a vintage Prada coat. I also figure it’s the least I can do to honor centuries-old masterpieces.

But no matter which museum you choose, and regardless of the art, dressing like it’s a special occasion is more fun than you might realize. In a world that’s grown aggressively casual, this almost feels daring and new!

One goal that has become fully realized in my 30s: being bicoastal. My love for New York City and Los Angeles has defined the beginning of this decade. And through living and exploring these two places, my personal style has evolved. Walking the city streets, I almost see myself as different characters. Through the clothes I wear, opposing sides of my personality get to shine. A major main-character moment from this trip was this Charlotte Simone coat—who doesn't want to look like a modern Penny Lane? As I've noted many times in my column, I love to reference the '70s. Looking ahead to spring, I see flared Levi's jeans and touches of suede in my outfits.

Another day, I found time in between my meetings for an afternoon on the Upper East Side, aka my favorite neighborhood I resided in during my time in the city. I like to joke that I dress like the wannabe John F. Kennedy Jr. boyfriend I don’t have, so blending masculine and feminine details is my go-to. A crisp white button-down shirt and a high stiletto boot, topped with a Ralph Lauren baseball cap and a romantic peacoat, feels so distinctively me for a walk around snowy Central Park and a burger at JG Melon.

I do find pleasure in allowing my outfits to create a sense of mystery. I love playing with elongated lines and high-impact textures to add drama to a look. I think a quality pair of low-rise black trousers is a wardrobe essential. And this epic suede coat was the perfect layer for gradually moving into the next season. Imagine it with a boho floral dress and chunky boots. This outfit embodied so much confidence as I sipped Americanos at Bar Pisellino.

After working in fashion for nearly a decade, I’m not easily fazed by a celebrity-backed fashion brand—but few have lingered in my mind quite like Gigi Hadid’s Guest in Residence. Founded in 2022, it has cultivated its It Girl appeal with Margot Robbie, Sabrina Carpenter, and legions of online devotees as fans who flock to (and sell out) its cashmere knits and cold-weather accessories.

The brand's immediate virality may have come from Hadid's celebrity, but the hype hasn't died down. Inspired by the passed-down cashmere of the model's youth, Guest in Residence collection mixes a retro sensibility with of-the-moment color trends and prints. As creative director of the New York-based label, Hadid draws on her fashion insider perspective to create true modern heirlooms. But with prices ranging from $95 to $1,295, is it worth the hype? I called on the very stylish women of Marie Claire to find out.

One mention of Guest in Residence in our Slack channel garnered instant responses, with nearly every saffer in our Manhattan office clamoring for a chance to test out a piece or two. New York Fashion Week has come and gone, but I won't shut up about the street style outside the Fall 2026 shows for a long time. There were plenty of triangle scarves over coats, unexpected color combinations, and It Bags to fawn over—my eyes, however, were aimed at the ground at all of the cool shoe trends attendees stepped out in.

After poring over hundreds of outfit snaps, I've developed a bad case of the shoppies. The only cure? Fresh footwear that won't break my budget.

The shoe trends that caught my eye at New York Fashion Week are incredibly wearable and fit seamlessly into my minimalist wardrobe. Punchy sneakers, high-vamp flats, and polished loafers are sitting at the top of my wishlist, but I'm also making room for a few statement pairs (hello, animal-print shoes!).

With a budget of $200 and under, my search naturally led me to Nordstrom, Zara, and H&M. These retailers didn't fail me: I found plenty of chic and affordable styles that fit into the biggest shoe trends of NYFW. Ahead, I'm sharing the ones in my cart, so you, too, can refresh your spring shoe rotation.

Colorful Sneakers

Sneakers are nothing new, but with every fashion week, their popularity seems to reach new heights. That was the case this February, when I spotted not one, not two, but many pairs of sneakers in bright colors like neon yellow, cherry red, and forest green. The next time you're tempted to reach for plain white sneakers, take after the street-style set with a pop of color and see what a difference it makes.

High-Vamp Flats

Ever since Marie Claire Fashion Editor Lauren Tappan spotlighted the high-vamp flat trend in a recent story, I can't stop seeing the minimalist shoes everywhere. A practical choice for running between shows, they were especially prevalent on the feet of NYFW attendees. They work with just about anything in your closet, from jeans and T-shirts to skirts and blazers. What's not to love?

Soft Loafers

Plenty of fashion week attendees prioritized comfortable footwear, which made loafers an especially popular flat shoe. The style has moved on from its clunky, lug-sole look to a more streamlined silhouette—think soft and ruched, the kind your grandpa probably wore. Go with classic black for easy styling, or opt for a suede pair for a richer look.

Animal-Print Boots

The fashion zeitgeist has been getting wilder with its prints, and that's never been more prevalent than the Fall 2026 season in New York. Every day, you could spot an attendee in a leopard-print coat or with a zebra-striped handbag; the trend carried over into footwear, especially boots, in street style.

Pointed-Toe Pumps

Some fashion week attendees took a sharp pivot with their footwear, opting for sky-high heels over flats to complete their look. Pointy pumps were perfect companions to the Glamoratti aesthetic, complementing opulent fur coats, sharp tailoring, and luxurious dresses. The next time your outfit feels drab, a pair of ladylike heels may make all the difference.

When Staff Writer Meguire Hennes asked me what makes New York Fashion Week so special, I told her it has everything to do with the street style scene. Having attended 10 NYFW seasons already, I’ve seen just about every kind of outfit under the sun—from loud ones that cause a paparazzi frenzy to quiet ones that fly under the radar. Because I’m a staunch minimalist, I’m more partial toward the latter.

One of my favorite streamlined outfits spotted outside the Fall 2026 shows belongs to none other than the First Lady of New York City, Rama Duwaji. Styled by Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, she arrived at Diotima wearing a khaki trench coat as a dress under another trench, grounded in black heeled boots, a leather bag, and thin hoop earrings.

Elsewhere, I was drawn to showgoers in leather jackets worn with delicate lace skirts and in collarless coats paired to turtleneck dresses. These looks certainly leaned toward the minimal end of the spectrum, but, by playing with textures and silhouettes, they were far from boring—and certainly stood out from the street style pack.

Shop NYFW's Minimal Street Style Outfits

At first glance, I thought Duwaji was wearing a dress, but I realized that she was actually in a double-trench look. This is the type of outfit that falls into fashion’s “offbeat minimalism” category, balancing functionality with a touch of personality.

I don’t care what anyone says: Wearing white during the winter is not a crime. And if it is, lock me up, because I’ll be styling this denim look on repeat. I have every element, from the white jeans to the suede jacket to the sturdy boots, in my capsule wardrobe.

I saw this sumptuous shearling-trimmed coat and my jaw nearly dropped to the floor. Amy Sall let the jacket to all the talking by keeping the rest of her outfit simple with uncomplicated, reliable pieces: black tailored trousers, sleek boots, and a plain handbag.

What I love most about this look is that it’s rooted in contrast: The rugged leather jacket and dainty lace skirt are total opposites, yet they work so well together. Finish off the outfit with a slouchy drawstring pouch, which just so happens to be a top Spring 2026 bag trend.

Forget itty-bitty winter accessories. For the chilly February shows, street stylers championed jumbo scarves that command attention. Paired with a belted trench, tights, and slingback heels, it looks incredibly rich.

To know me is to understand that collarless coats are my latest outerwear obsession. The rounded-neck style has endless layering potential. Wear it over a button-down, a high-neck sweater, or a turtleneck dress, like this showgoer did.

Minimalism and color aren't mutually exclusive. This NYFW attendee styled a strawberry red sweater under a gray coat (an underrated combo, in our opinion), proving that a little can go a long way.

Though it's been a major trend for the past few seasons, I haven’t really played into Western-inspired fashion. However, I’ve been feeling an urge to channel my inner horse girl—I'd follow this street styler's lead in a suede jacket, a pair of flared jeans, and heeled cowboy boots. It’s a look that feels on-trend, but not kitschy.

While the weather is still cold, I plan to wear my plush faux fur coats as much as possible. I’ll be copying this Tamu McPherson outfit, which boast a “low-effort, high-reward” attitude.

Everyone wants to know if Simone Biles will compete at the 2028 Olympics: "We'll see," she told The Today Show on February 18. But in worrying about the next Summer Games, fans risk icing out her spectator style at the 2026 Winter Olympics. That same day, the Olympian carried a Hermès Kelly around Milan, and simultaneously championed a Nike-led 2026 sneaker trend.

Biles and her husband, Jonathan Owens, have been in Milan since Feb. 13. Their appearances have been limited to the figure skating stands so far, but the couple finally played tourists on day five of their trip. Biles, for one, looked every bit an off-duty athlete in black leggings and a matching oversize turtleneck. Even her sneakers—the Nike Zoom Vomero 5 model—could've been plucked from a current competitor's locker. Though her brand ambassadorship reportedly ended before the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, she can't deny Nike's street style potential.

The $170 Zoom Vomero 5s—featuring chunky two-tone soles, plastic cage-like sidewalls, and ventilated heels—date back to 2010. However, Biles's light gray "Photon Dust" color debuted as recently as Feb. 2024. Nike's signature Swoosh comes in metallic silver, which stands out against the gray uppers and black-and-white soles.

Biles's last major Nike styling moment arrived at her April 2023 wedding, when she had white Air Force Ones bedazzled with pearls and gold rhinestones. Her Hermès Kelly, on the other hand, is as much a frequent flyer as she is. Last month, the top-handle Kelly 25—in black with palladium hardware—was spotted beneath her seat at a Chicago Bulls basketball game.

The gymnast's husband stayed home, meaning the five-figure find won "most recognizable bag in the stands" by a landslide. (Similar styles sell secondhand for upwards of $28,000.) Meanwhile in Milan, Owens wore a rare Goyard messenger bag. Its top-flap, coated canvas exterior boasted the label's signature white and brown chevrons. Former Vice President Kamala Harris styled the same print on a Goyard Saint Louis tote on Feb. 17.

The Milan Cortina Olympics will be over before you know it (Feb. 22 marks the final competitions). Since Hermès doesn't exactly offer gym-ready duffles, Kelly-carrying athletes may be harder to come by. If you're reading this, it means I'm currently in Italy for the 2026 Winter Olympics. I've had this trip planned for months, which means I had time to really consider my packing strategy. In the end, I landed on nine New York-coded outfits that can carry me through my 20-day vacation.

I didn't intend on wearing all-black in Milan (and London, where I'll be spending some time), but I'm born and raised in the Big Apple, so it's practically in my blood. It's going to be a little warmer in Milan than in New York (and thank goodness for that!), so I have the chance to pull out my lighter spring jackets and light-wash denim. J.Crew does the former category particularly well; I'm relying on my classic Levi's jeans to keep the look casual.

A Touch of Print

I've been on a white denim kick ever since Style at Large contributor (and one of my favorite follows) Larissa Mills talked about the category in a recent column. To make it feel more "me," I'm leaning on a cheetah-print jacket and red accessories.

Modern Draping

I'm only five-foot-two, so I rely on elongating silhouettes a lot. Enter: this lace-trimmed tunic. With an oversized blazer, it feels incredibly elegant.

One thing to know about me: I'm an Olympics fanatic. So, when my husband and I secured tickets to a few of the Winter Game events in Cortina, we decided to make a full trip to Milan and London out of it. It's a pinch-me moment, for sure, but it's also a lesson in strategic packing—all in all, it'll be 20 straight days of travel and living out of my suitcase.

Everything I'm bringing, from my faux-fur earmuffs to my sporty track jackets, comes from one of three of my favorite retailers: Nordstrom, Net-a-Porter, and Revolve. Sure, I’ll happily wear something impractical for exactly one show if the look warrants it, but over the course of a February week spent power-walking between neighborhoods, ducking into overheated lobbies, and waiting for an Uber that’s allegedly three minutes away in sub-freezing temperatures, fantasy dressing quickly gives way to reality.

The reality is this: What gets worn on repeat during a NYFW season is rarely the most obvious choice. It’s the brands that merge form and function—the ones that understand insulation, traction, and layering as well as proportion. These are the pieces that make 20,000 steps a day feel survivable, don’t require a midweek foot-care crisis, and still photograph well enough to catch a street-style photographer’s eye.

Between the base layers doing the heavy lifting, the warm accessories that imbue a hint of color into my winter outfit, and the tour-de-force coats that top off each look, these are the under-the-radar brands I rely on—not because they scream fashion week, but because they make it possible to survive it.

By the end of fashion week, I’ve usually lost half my gloves and at least one hat—it’s inevitable. Gone are the days of writing a full review for every show, but as a freelancer, I’m still hauling my laptop, notebooks, snacks, and printed show notes I refuse to part with. A laptop bag needs to be structured, comfortable, and able to withstand being shoved under benches and café tables all week.
