Finding fashionable workwear is a year-round challenge, but something about summer makes it even harder. Navigating the transition between sweltering commutes and icy air conditioning is never easy, especially if you want to look good doing it. Add in shopping for plus sizes (which are mostly online lately), and it starts to feel like a whole ordeal.

Fortunately, there are some chic, summer-friendly, and often underrated in-office, plus-size options out there. Ahead, get to know some of my top workwear brands as a plus-size fashion expert and blogger.

Eloquii for Stylish Suiting

I’ve wear-tested the majority of plus-size workwear brands on the market. One of my overarching takeaways is that plus-specific brands are a great place to start if you are looking for a great fit in blazers and trousers.

Eloquii is a perfect example. I’ve been a fan of the New York-based brand's statement suits for over a decade now, collecting them in every shape, color, and print. Creative director Yesenia Torres keeps her eye on upcoming trends, and you can always find both classic suits and of-the-moment takes from the brand.

This summer-perfect, short-sleeve edition is my latest obsession. The light color keeps things cool, the voluminous pleat-front pants fit like a dream, and I absolutely love the hourglass’s structured curve.

My only recommendation is to definitely size up once if you are fuller busted like me. My usual size here is a bit too snug through the chest for the average office, but going up one size will accommodate a large chest, no problem. I still feel powerful and sharp in this size, but I know from firsthand experience how much controversy even the tiniest bit of cleavage can cause in some offices. So, I recommend adding a lightweight, silk tank top underneath if you want more coverage.

Spanx for Surprisingly Soft Workwear

I know, I know: Famed shapewear brand Spanx is probably not the first name that comes to mind when you think of airy summer office attire, but it should absolutely be on your radar! With sizes up to 3x and an assortment of signature fabrics specifically engineered to be breathable, it’s actually a great option for warm weather workwear. I love the brand-new EasyBreezy cotton-linen blend (especially in wide leg trousers).

Even though it is more mid-weight, Spanx's popular Supersmooth ponte knit pant (with built-in shaping) is still comfortably wearable on a hot day. But of all the styles I tried, this impeccable draped sheath dress stood out as the summer workwear pick.

It might look indistinguishable from a standard structured sheath dress (a plus when it comes to office-wear, to be clear), but it feels like pajamas. The Airessentials fabric is another Spanx signature, made specifically to be breathable and gloriously soft. It's wrinkle resistant, too—something very appreciated when your days involve long stretches of sitting at your desk!

Now that I know how summer-friendly this fabric is, I’m going to be keeping an eye out for other pieces in Airessentials. The only asterisk I’d add for this dress is that it runs a little large, so I’d consider sizing down if you are torn between two sizes. I got my usual 2x and it works well on me, but it’s certainly more loose-fitting than other Spanx items I tried in the same size.

Lane Bryant and Lysse for Sharp Separates

Not every office calls for a full-on suit or even a dress, but sometimes, denim is a touch too casual. In those instances, work-ready separates from Lane Bryant and Lysse are just the thing. Lane Bryant has the benefit of being the longest running plus-size brand. Over a hundred years of fit experience shows up in the way plus size figures are considered in the designs. I’m a big fan of the Perfect Drape trousers, and I tell everyone who will listen that Lane Bryant makes the best plus-size capris on the market.

But the label’s thoughtful silhouettes aren’t just found in pants. Take this sleeveless button-down, for example: The slight swing silhouette gives ease around the midsection and there is still some shape built into the top to keep it from looking too boxy. This style also looks fantastic tucked into a pencil skirt or a pair of wide leg trousers. It can also be easily layered under a blazer if you need arm coverage (or have one of those arctic-level office air conditioners!)

For this look, I paired the sleeveless Oxford with Lysse pants, another of my workwear go-tos. A New York City label that initially focused on leggings, Lysse’s catalog has evolved to include so much more, and I am particularly fond of the pull-on pants. True to the brand’s roots, their bottoms feel like supportive leggings, but look like real pants. The patented compression waistband makes everything lay flat with no squeezing, and the cotton gabardine’s four-way stretch is happily wrinkle resistant. The track pants-inspired side stripes add a sporty vibe that offsets classic pointy pumps.

This look is perfect for more business casual dress codes, and the neutral color means you can add your desk jacket if the AC spikes too high. Form and function! And if you like this shape but prefer covered shoulders, Lysse has a similar poplin button-down with cuffed short sleeves!

Kim Cattrall once said, “I don’t want to be in a situation for even an hour where I’m not enjoying myself.” In my experience, nothing ruins a good time faster than wearing the wrong work shoes. While I occasionally fall victim to uncomfortable footwear, the older I get, I’ve become increasingly less tolerant of sacrificing comfort for style.

Fortunately, several of this summer’s work shoe trends are also the most practical. Take, for example, the glove heel. This design has gained momentum over the past year because it’s elevated enough for professional meetings yet comfortable enough for grueling subway rides. Whether styled with slouchy boyfriend jeans or a rigid pencil skirt, it’s extremely adaptable.

Beyond the glove heel, other options range from no-risk staples like ballet flats to more avant-garde alternatives like split-toe sneakers. These corporate-friendly shoes have become some of my favorites as they’re the sort of dress ‘em up, dress ‘em down styles that can seamlessly transition from the office to a high-end restaurant with a $22 martini on the menu.

The Ballet Flat

Fashion’s enduring love for ballet flats isn’t anything new. In fact, I remember spending my college years traipsing around campus in Tory Burch’s iconic Reva flats. These days, I’m more partial toward contemporary silhouettes that have a higher vamp, which often prevents the shoes from flapping as I run around town.

My current favorites include a silver pair from Alex Mill along with a red satin set from Margaux. Both of these options have the simple power to make a more casual look—like the linen pants and T-shirt above—into something a bit more deliciously dressy.

The Glove Heel

If I’m pining over something pricey, like Phoebe Philo’s Club Slippers, I’ll often test out a more affordable version first. It's a shopping strategy that I swear by.

Reformation’s Glove Heel, a high-vamp option that is similar to Philo’s, has become an everyday staple in my rotation. It’s shockingly comfortable—a proverbial hug for the feet, if you will. It slides on effortlessly and adds a sort of ‘90s-inspired corporate appeal. Get ready to channel your inner Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.

The Split-Toe Sneaker

Lastly, and perhaps most controversial, is the split-toe sneaker. While Nike’s Air Rift has been around since 1996, it’s been difficult to find for years, often requiring a search through secondhand sites. However, following the craze around Margiela Tabis and Vibram V-Souls, this hoof-like sneaker has reappeared. Luckily, I snagged a pair before they sold out.

That said, the brand offers an equally chic version from its collaboration with Skims (see below). Their sleek profile makes them easy to style with summery dresses and skirts.

Just three years ago, I transitioned from working in corporate beauty to a full-time content creator. And while I love working from home (business on top, sweatpants on the bottom), I have a confession: I miss getting dressed for the office. Not the rules of office dressing—but the ritual of it.

But if you’ve ever worked in a corporate setting, you know how easy it is to default to the same formula: neutral blazer, simple top, safe shoes. It works. But it doesn’t exactly feel like you. At least it never felt like me. At 24 and fresh out of college, I relied on Rent the Runway shipments to keep my wardrobe interesting within the confines of corporate dress codes. Even then, it still felt like I was playing it safe.

Since then, my style has evolved into something much more unapologetically maximalist. I’ve been especially inspired by creators like Asha Mode and her incredibly colorful work 'fits, and one of my favorite friends, StayGoldenGirl, who could write a dissertation on how to unleash creativity into your work wardrobe.

Which has me thinking: if I were getting dressed for the office today, I wouldn’t abandon personality, I’d build the outfit around it.

Here’s where I’d start.

Suits—But Make Them Interesting

A good suit will always make you feel powerful. But instead of defaulting to black, try a saturated color, an unexpected texture, or a slightly oversized fit. The structure is what makes it polished—the rest can be fun.

Really Good Pants (RGPs)

If you’re over jeans—or, like me, actively trying to retire your sweatpants (a shift I wrote about recently)—a great pair of trousers does all the heavy lifting. Look for drape, stretch, and a waistband you don’t have to think about. Comfort is non-negotiable—but so is looking put-together.

Statement Tops That Still Feel Work-Appropriate

This is where you can actually get creative. A sculptural sleeve, a bold print, or an unexpected fabric instantly changes the entire outfit—no extra styling required.

And Finally, a Bag That Does Something

You’re carrying it every day—your bag might as well make the outfit. Think colors, textures, or shapes that feel intentional, not just practical.

Workwear doesn’t have to be boring to be taken seriously.

Because getting dressed for work shouldn’t feel like editing yourself—it should feel like an extension of your personal style.

Don't get me wrong: I adore office outfit trends as much as the next fashion-girl-turned-corporate employee. But every once in a while, I don't want to use any brain power before 8 a.m. Enter: My blazer, button-down, and black trousers, the cheat-code suit I wear to avoid overthinking. Today, I re-wore the set along with Zendaya, who added it to her The Drama press tour style.

Less than twelve hours after her "something borrowed" (Cate Blanchett's favorite Armani Privé dress) graced the film's Rome premiere, Z looked ready for work in black-and-white selects. Stylist Law Roach selected the same base layer I do: a crisp, white button-down. I thought my black blazer was sleek, but Zendaya's oversize collar and structured lapels blew mine out of the water. Plus, it added visual interest to the classic color story, without axing Zendaya's affinity for minimalism.

The office-appropriate similarities continued between Zendaya and I once she slipped on black trousers. Like mine, her pair was fitted through her thighs, before flaring out ever-so-slightly over her heels. Contrary to my chunky socks (I work from home, okay?), the Euphoria actor wore her signature Christian Louboutin So Kate pumps. She strutted in the same black, 4.75-inch stilettos on The Drama's red carpet last night.

The only thing missing from Zendaya's professional 'fit? A designer laptop bag, but that's not out of the ordinary for her: She hasn't carried a single purse during The Drama rounds. In fact, her work bags—of which her closet has no shortage—have been MIA since Oct. 2024, when she carried the Louis Vuitton Neverfull in NYC. But perhaps the bottomless bag is back at her Roman hotel room. A Hollywood star like Zendaya can't embark on her first of four 2026 press tours without one, after all.

As a freelancer, I don’t traditionally enter an office everyday, but lately I’ve been working from a shared workspace that has boosted my sudden urge to “dress up” for work. It’s actually helped my focus and energy. This opportunity to take the effort to get dressed for very light workplace interaction has rewired my styling approach, and I wanted to share my findings to those who might need a spark of inspiration for office outfits.

I wanted to focus on four key basics that every office go-er should probably have already in their closet: a little black skirt, a striped shirt, black leggings, and a cardigan. My personal style usually involves a great pop of color or two, but I understand how that can be distracting in a more buttoned-up setting. So in the spirit of ‘90’s Carolyn Besette at Calvin Klein, I kept to neutrals, but reworked them in a way that feels a little less pared-down minimalist and a little more somethin’ somethin’.

Refresh the Little Black Skirt

I constantly troll my favorite designers on The RealReal from “price low to high” for hidden gems at a great deal, and a simple black skirt almost always kicks off the lower tier. I wondered why this particular item isn't valued more, because I see it as an opportunity to purchase a very well-made workhorse for the wardrobe.

Because I’m always on the hunt for something unusual, my favorite little black skirt I own is a super lightweight wool 1997 Miu Miu style with a super high slit. While I definitely have worn this in a super leggy, NSFW way, as it was shown on the runway, I often layer it over long tunics or shirt dresses, sometimes with a cool colorful or patterned pair of tights. This time, while dresses over pants have been on my mind, I tried it over a pair of simple tapered trousers and absolutely loved the effect. I paired the combo with a simple vintage Gap wool collared sweater, black flats, and a pop of a color in a bag (if that’s allowed at work!). It all came together as an effortless and comfortable outfit, but just a touch of that cool-factor that turns otherwise boring trousers and a boring skirt into something much, much less boring.

Refresh the Striped Shirt

First things first, do yourself a favor and get a bigger striped shirt—your elbow crease and bust will thank you for the extra room. Second, take that big shirt and pair it with an equally oversized jacket. This silhouette automatically brings very square office basics instantly into cool, effortless French girl territory.

I threw a simple cotton turtleneck under the shirt because it’s one of my favorite layering hacks for warmth that also makes it feel more sophisticated. The third step is to pair it all with something small to avoid the messy, clown-y feel of dressing up in Dad’s clothes. So, I took a pair of fitted cropped jeans (you can definitely swap for a black cropped ponte pant, if jeans are a no-go at work), a pair of sock booties, and a tiny nylon Prada bag to play up the oversized proportions. This one feels good for almost anywhere else I’d want to go from a casual dinner date or drinks with friends after work.

Refresh the Black Legging

Okay, this one is also dependent on the dress code of your office, but I think it can be a very chic base that's also quite comfortable. I'm never, ever gatekeeping my obsession of Sacai shirt dresses. (I quite literally have six different ones for various seasons, and have worn them for years and years.) I love ones that are a little funky or “reworked,” and this one has sweater sleeves—a great added texture. I added a blue wool sweater vest on top for a monochromatic statement. They're always the perfect length, too: never too long for bare legs, long enough to cover your butt if you’re pairing leggings underneath (a crucial element for a professional setting).

Black leggings and loafers anchor the look that I finished with a secondhand Prada nylon backpack, one of my favorite work essentials. I also want to note that I think it’s worth investing in a very thick cotton or cashmere pair of leggings that have great opacity and feel closer to pants, instead of trying to get more mileage out of a pair of workout ones. The nylon will throw off the polished vibe.

Refresh the Cardigan

I once went through my very good friend Christina’s closet and helped her slim down her cardigan selection (she had just a few too many), but I was thinking of her when I put together this outfit. Mind you, this super old Marc by Marc Jacobs one of mine is a little funky, with the layering effect and two tones, but I wanted to show how playing with neutral colorblocking can still feel interesting, even if the colors aren’t super bright.

I love the idea of a mismatched twinset with a short-sleeve or tank sweater in a contrasting color, so I chose a cream cashmere knit to go with my cardigan. I also added a navy trouser, black loafers, and a black patent hobo bag with big silver hardware for a little more texture. It felt more interesting than the simple sweater-and-trouser combo I default to in the winter. I highly recommend adding some non-long-sleeved sweaters to your wardrobe as a more polished trans-seasonal staple and an extra layer with cotton shirts, long-sleeved tees, turtlenecks, and, of course, cardigans of a different color.

We’re told to dress for the job we want. But what happens once you actually get it—when you’re named CEO or your once-small business is suddenly bringing in millions a quarter or you step into a role that has only ever gone to a man? For many women, that question carries extra weight and scrutiny, especially when you’re the first woman in the room or the only person of color on the team.

To get some answers, we polled 11 women across business, politics, science, finance, and fashion—from state representatives and rocket scientists to entrepreneurs and CMOs—about what they wear on the job. What emerged wasn’t a single “right” look, but a shared approach. The women we spoke to don’t feel bound to neutral palettes, the expectation of always wearing heels, or other long-prescribed ideas about how working women should dress. On carrying my culture with me: I’m a 35-generation New Mexican and a member of the Laguna Pueblo. But that would brush aside a truth we all know…the way we present ourselves to the world instantly communicates who we are, where we come from, and what we believe.”

My hero category: Denim. I always grab a pair of jeans first, and then figure out the rest of my outfit from there. I love denim because it can go from casual to polished depending on how you style it. You can throw on a crisp shirt, add a belt and heels, and suddenly your basic jeans feel elevated.

Best fashion lesson: You don’t have to overdo it to make a statement. I’m a minimalist at heart and think style should feel easy, so I love pieces that do a lot without being loud. I’d rather be understated than overstated—that approach keeps my outfits feeling timeless.

My underdog accessory: I’m big on belts. A thin belt can completely change the proportions of an outfit and make something simple feel pulled together.

On wearing personality pieces to work: I am known for my natural look. My hair started to turn grey in my late 20s and I’ve let it grow naturally, and I also stopped wearing make-up when I moved to Los Angeles back in 2020. So, my clothes are where I show off my personality and style. I usually opt for one amazing piece and keep the rest of my outfit quite simple. In particular, I love to collect emotional runway pieces from emerging talents like Wales Bonner, Martine Rose, and Willy Chavarria, as well as The Row, Miu Miu, and Alaïa. My approach to deciding what to wear: I start with a statement piece and work my way around it. Sometimes that’s a bold blazer or a good leather piece, other days it’s a killer pair of trousers or a vintage accessory that does all the talking. I love it when one item sets the tone; everything else just falls into place.

My wardrobe MVP: My style is rooted in ’90s and early-2000s references, and there’s this street style photo of Victoria Beckham wearing a slim-fitting leather jacket from years ago that I’m particularly inspired by. I spent forever searching for a leather jacket with that same chic fit and eventually found a slim-fit DKNY leather blazer that’s practically a replica. It’s become my go-to for client meetings and events, and I always get compliments. No matter what I’m wearing with it, that blazer makes me feel like myself.

This year has been full of home office work, Zoom-from-the-waist-up meetings, and in-the-field market appointments here in Jamaica. I love infusing bold color into anything I wear. I paired these easy single-pleat trousers from Argent with the perfect vintage Missoni striped knit. It felt bold and special without oversaturating my look.

From Day to Night

If you’re a busy bee whose social calendar is filled with post-work drinks and dinners, you’ll need an outfit that seamlessly takes you from day to night. A neutral dress will do the trick. In the office, wear this piece with comfortable flat shoes that you can swap out for a slingback or peep-toe heel (both of which are big Spring 2026 shoe trends) as you make your way into the evening. A sleek black tote or your favorite roomy designer handbag is a great accessory that's not afraid to work the overtime shift.

In this biweekly series, we're interviewing female executives, founders, and CEOs on their "power suit," aka the outfit they wear every day for easy dressing to conquer whatever the job throws at them.

Like most of the hundreds of thousands of people who follow her on Instagram or subscribe to her workouts, I’d never had the pleasure of actually meeting Megan Roup in real life when I set out to chat with her for this story. My friends who are longtime loyalists of The Sculpt Society’s online workouts have a habit of speaking about Roup as though they’re old friends, which I’d put down to yet another quirk of living through the pandemic—but I have to admit, I get it now. Even the quickest dive into Roup’s feed is a delight, whether it’s snippets of exercise sessions with her celebrity supermodel friends, photos of her baby daughter Harlow, or some gloriously unfancy recipe content (apple dessert nachos are a low-key highlight), all doused in West Hollywood sunshine. 

Roup’s signature exercise program is an compelling combo of effective sculpting exercises and dance cardio choreographed to feel-good banger anthems in a way that made me go, “Ohhhh, of course,” when she told me she used to be on the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets dance team. “I was always hustling in the city, juggling my career with the Nets, teaching fitness classes, and working in fashion. I quickly fell in love with teaching and the connections and impact I was having on other women, and I knew it was something I wanted to do forever.” 

Now celebrating the three-year anniversary of The Sculpt Society’s app, Roup’s day-to-day is anchored in spreading joyful fitness. Recently, she taught exactly that kind of class at Marie Claire’s Power Trip event in collaboration with FP Movement, a brand that speaks to her love of the elevated athleisure that dominates her work wardrobe. Afterward, we connected on what’s inspiring her everyday wellness, fitness, and happiness.

On Her Morning Routine:

“I will start off by saying that I am not a morning person, but there are some strategies I’ve mastered throughout the years to make the process a little easier. I’m really trying to avoid doom scrolling at night and reading a book instead for a better night’s sleep. If I’m going live on The Sculpt Society app, I like to lay out my outfit the night before. Since becoming a mom, I naturally have to rise earlier, but my husband and I are a team, and we’ll tackle a morning feeding together or separately, depending on the day. I always start with a cup of warm water with lemon and coffee—I love coffee! 

“After I go live on the app, I will have my go-to eggs on Ezekiel bread with hot sauce (the best!) and probably sneak in some snuggles with Harlow or take a walk with my husband down the street to grab (another) coffee. Once we’re caffeinated, I’ll connect with my team and kick off my day, which could include a private class, programming new workouts, working on marketing initiatives, creating content for Instagram and TikTok, implementing user feedback, or brainstorming with other brands on fun ways to collaborate.”

On Getting Dressed:

“I would say that my personal style is very classic. Since my job is teaching fitness, you can usually find me in a workout set paired with a cropped sweatshirt or jacket. Free People Movement is definitely always in my rotation. I’m obsessed with the brand’s Good Karma sets. It’s so easy to add a FPM jacket and my sneakers to run out the door for a quick walk or errands and still feel pulled together and confident in my outfit. I think of athleisure as multifunctional and stylish. The explosion of this aesthetic is even more relevant today as most of us are working from home and the demand for a comfortable, stylish aesthetic has increased.”

On Happiness:

“I’m a firm believer in committing to less, to show up more. This could be exercising less or attending fewer social events so that you can prioritize your own happiness and self-care and show up as the best version of yourself for your loved ones. My daughter and husband make me ridiculously and deliriously happy, and I try my best to show up as my best self for them—although that may not always be the case. (I’m human, after all!) When I’m not feeling my best, I like to indulge in a little self-care, whether that’s a hot shower or spending time in the sauna, reading a book or binge-watching a show with a glass of wine. 

“Stepping away from work or a frustrating situation always gives me better clarity and makes me feel better to show up the next day (or hour) as a better version of myself. The Sculpt Society community always makes me really happy, and I’m so proud of what we’ve built together. I can’t wait to see how this community grows in the next three years.”

On the Motivational Power of a Good Outfit:

“When I’m getting dressed, I want to feel comfortable, confident, and feminine. I tend to dress in a lot of neutrals when it comes to my everyday outfits, but when I’m filming workouts or going to an event, I like to play with colors. Color makes me happy, and a good outfit makes me feel confident.”

Shop Megan’s Favorite Pieces:

In the 1980s, women's participation in the labor force steadily increased. Uncoincidentally, the popularity of the skirt suit also exploded, marketed as a sure-fire way to get a leg up as a woman in the corporate workplace. 

Kimberly Chrisman-Campbell, fashion historian and author of Skirts Fashioning Modern Femininity in the 20th Century, explains the '80s skirt set, coined a “power suit,” was intentionally machismo and overtly eye-catching with oversized shoulder pads and neon color combos. "Just the idea of having a uniform is a compelling and influential concept in itself," she says, "and the skirt set became a symbol of power in the workplace at a pivotal time when women challenged men for equality."

While the power suit is synonymous with the decade that also brought us Reaganomics and scrunchies, skirt suits were not just an '80s phenomenon. As far back as the 17th century, women began wearing the first version of a skirt suit during male-dominated leisure activities like horseback riding and hunting—both for comfort and as a tactic to command authority. In the 18th century, Marie Antoinette and the ladies of the French aristocracy wore men’s coats paired alongside skirted bottoms to ride side-saddle and eventually during travel.

In the 20th century, French designer Christian Dior put the modern idea of a skirt suit on the sartorial map. His New Look collection featured a novel pairing of a bar jacket with rounded shoulders and a pinched waist, matched with a skirt both voluminous and appropriate for everyday wear. In the early '60s, Coco Chanel debuted her interpretation of the duo, taking it from a historically structured ensemble to a loose-fitting but well-constructed set that was smart, comfortable, and versatile.

"The fact of the matter is the convenience of a skirt will never waver," Chrisman-Campbell explains. Fashion leaders agree. After several seasons of workleisure and all day loungewear, a new guard of skirted suits re-emerged on the fall 2022 runways—but this time, without a narrow borrowed-from-the-boys approach. The latest iterations are strong but feminine in bold colors and eye-catching silhouettes that you can mix and match or wear as one-and-done sets.

While you no longer have to wear a skirt suit to command authority or snag the corner office, "there's a reason that we keep coming back to them," says Chrisman-Campbell. They’re an insurance policy for looking and feeling great. Still, one thing's for sure: Women never needed the power suit to smash the glass ceiling. We did that on our own.

A footwear career wasn't always guaranteed for Kristina Blahnik—despite the fact that her uncle, Manolo, began the iconic Manolo Blahnik shoe brand in London 50 years ago. But after a decade spent studying and practicing architecture, Kristina felt a pull toward the family business. Her early involvement with the company was initially a six-month consulting stint. Since that first whirlwind day in 2009—during which Blahnik recalls hopping on a plane, design sketches in hand, to Italy to help develop the Spring 2010 collection—she's never looked back. 

Thirteen years later, now the CEO of the Manolo Blahnik brand, Kristina splits her time between the bustling streets of London and her grounding country home. Her signature style is also an extension of her family, with her mother and uncle the source of inspiration for her timeless workwear aesthetic that focuses on polished investment pieces.

Ahead, we spoke with the leader about her thoughtful approach to footwear and how a trip to New York City can be an endless source of inspiration.

On Her Morning Routine:

If I'm working from home in the countryside, I start my day by walking the dog. It grounds me and helps me connect with nature. If I'm in London, I love going to these crazy climbing classes or getting in a Peloton ride—high cardiovascular exercise. That's my perfect start before getting to the office; I've done my training, hydrated well, and I'm ready to go.

On Her Approach to Dressing:

My work and life wardrobe are inextricably linked. I don't have a different persona outside of work. The only time I have a slightly different aesthetic is in the countryside because the mud is never-ending. In England, the weather can do anything from one day to the next, but I always have a considered approach toward my footwear. If it's raining, I'll choose a more practical footwear option so that I don't destroy my delicate shoes, and I'll work my way up from there; if it's sunny, I'll work my way down from the outfit to the shoes. 

If I don't want to overthink my outfit, I'll put on a dress—you can conquer the world in a good dress. You'll see me in red, black, or white 80 percent of the time—that's a pretty predominant portion of my wardrobe. I'll add in splashes of color. 

My wardrobe is about longevity, quality, and timelessness. My style has a classic look; I don't tend to follow the fashion trend path. I've had pieces I've made deep connections with and still wear all of the time—I love Valentino, and I have a lot of amazing McQueen pieces from many years ago. I add to my wardrobe on a need-basis rather than seasonally.

On Her Style Inspirations:

There's an element of elegance and tradition in how my mother and uncle dress. My uncle will never leave the house without a suit, and my mother will never go out without being completely put together. I've adopted that same approach for myself. I love that concept. 

I think that mindset also inspires. When you see somebody who's polished and ready to take on the day, you rethink your style philosophy.  It makes me so happy to walk down the street and see someone whose made a beautiful effort. Seven years ago, a New York City recruiter planted a seed in Gillian Williams's head: Her bubbly personality and communication skills could be a huge success in the recruiting world.

Williams, then a confused 20-something navigating the hectic fashion industry, welcomed the opportunity to step into a role that played to her strengths. She had imagined recruiting as a matchmaking game—getting to know people and linking them to compatible career mates.

After several years of agency experience with a fashion recruiting company, Williams began to recognize that the job expectations were not a complete match for her own goals and core values. More often than not, Williams cringed as she saw the bottom line trump the well-being of her clients.

After discussing her disappointment with a like-minded coworker (now her business partner), Williams decided to leave her corporate job to start her own recruiting and relationship-building agency. Monday Talent officially launched in February 2020. 

The company and its unconventional recruiting style align with Williams' ethics, her people skills, and her strong support of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the workplace.

Working predominately from home with a schedule where no two days are alike, Williams runs her business while maintaining a realistic mix of comfort and balance. Her workwear obsessions include tactile separates like silk pants, linen tops, and cozy sweaters for dropping temps. Ahead, here's what Williams does and wears to tackle her weekdays.

On Her Morning Routine:

I am not a morning person, and my routine flexes with my schedule. My routine is that there isn't necessarily a set routine! If I know I won't be on camera for a few hours, I'll take a leisurely morning. A phone call from my bed is my safe spot. 

My dream was always to be able to roll over, pick up the phone, and get some stuff done. I've been able to make that happen.

I got a pandemic puppy. As a newer dog mom, I'm just getting used to his routine. I'm lucky that I have outdoor space to let him outside on our patch of grass in the early mornings.

Then, I will say that I try to have a good skincare morning routine. But again, like with most other things, I'm not consistent. There will be some days where I'm amazing, and I do it all, and then other days where I'm like, "Screw it, as long as I brush my teeth and wash my face, I'm okay." 

On Her Go-To Pieces:

Before working from home, I didn't prioritize things like comfort. Now I wear a lot of leggings throughout the day. I have these Norma Kamali leggings that have a little slit on the side. I love them because they make me feel a bit chicer. I've been so obsessed with these creamy satin trousers from The Row. I am the type of person who purchases the same pieces repeatedly.

When it gets a little colder, I always have a go-to sweater, usually in cream or white, and I love button-downs. They always look good on a Zoom call.

I've also been making a conscious decision to support Black-owned businesses. I love the accessories brand Brother Vellies and their founder Aurora James. I look up to her and her mission to change the fashion industry while pushing other companies with her 15 percent pledge.

On Confidence Dressing:

It's been interesting trying to figure out my style. I'm at this unique phase in life when I'm the founder of a company—so I want to feel like I'm dressing to command respect—but then I'm still in my early thirties, so I don't want to look too matronly. 

Silk pants make me feel like I'm almost in pajamas, but then they have that added level of polish. I'll pair them with a mix-and-match silk top. It's essential for me to feel like I'm in that power outfit when I want to tackle the day. It's funny how much clothes can transform your confidence level.

"Women were coming up to me every single day asking me where my suits were from," says Melinda Robertson, who now owns Scanlan Theodore's Americas division (where she is also co-CEO). As financiers in New York City by way of Australia, Robertson and her friend Sarah Blank couldn't believe the attention their Scanlan Theodore work wardrobes were commanding. Like many Australian professionals, Robertson and Blank would stock up on their Scanlan pieces while visiting the Eastern Hemisphere—where the brand is a household name.

Duly noting the New York market gap for affordable, high-quality workwear, Robertson and Blake approached Scanlan Theodore's founder, Gary Theodore, with a proposition: partner up and take the iconic Australian brand stateside. With some convincing, Theodore accepted, leading Roberston and Blank to leave their finance jobs and gamble at opening the first Scanlan Theodore U.S. outpost in 2017.

The "soft launch" strategy to introduce New York to Scanlan Theodore was grassroots. Robertson sold clothes from her New York City apartment, where she hosted trunk shows for women and former co-workers. The collection—comprised of classically tailored designs with simple, clean lines—was a huge hit, especially for women adhering to business casual dress codes.

Five years later, with boutiques in the Flatiron district and Hudson Yards neighborhood and three more stores slated to open over the next year in Manhattan alone, Scanlan Theodore has become a go-to amongst professionals and lovers of quality basics. 

We sat down with Robertson to chat about her style as a co-CEO and mom of three boys, her favorite everyday pieces, and her mission to help women curate their perfect work wardrobe.

On Pivoting:

During the Pandemic, we sold luxury clothing to women who weren't allowed to leave home. So, it was hard. But, we came at it from a less-is-more perspective. We focused on promoting beautiful everyday pieces that feel comfortable and look presentable on a Zoom call—but also pieces that you would happily wear to go out again. We leaned into our basics, which we do best, and cashmere sets. We weren't selling sequin tops, but women got to a point where they wanted to get dressed in the morning. I know I certainly did.

On Her Morning Routine:

I try to get up at 6:30 am and have half an hour to myself. I have a shower. I get dressed. I love makeup, so I always try and use that time to pop on a few products—even when I'm half asleep, a slick of red lipstick makes me feel presentable. It's fairly chaotic because I have three little boys under the age of 6. Getting them off to school, or whatever they're doing that day, is the focus when they wake up. 

On Getting Dressed:

You need a uniform. I always go for a set, like a matching top or a dress—pieces that I don't have to put a lot of thought into but look elevated and are still functional without being too casual. I wear a sneaker in the morning because I ride an electric scooter around New York City. I like to be a monochrome dresser. I generally don't mix and match colors very much because I'm in such a rush.

My approach to workwear has always been to invest in everyday pieces that are beautifully crafted and have high-quality stitching and fabrics because I wear my clothes really hard. My hero piece is a high-waisted long leather skirt and a crepe knit jacket. They're both durable. I can ride my scooter around the city and have my children touching my clothes without getting marked up. I'm not sitting in an office— I'm racing around.

On Accessorizing:

I love Ulla Johnson's accessories. Her boutique experience is beautiful, which I enjoy and appreciate. I just purchased a pair of sunglasses from them. I also like Mifland for leather pieces—they're doing cool stuff in the space, and their website is unique; they have a great online shopping experience. 

I also own about five pairs of Sarah Flint's shoes that I always wear. She was a big help as we were starting and gave us a lot of advice. If I'm not in a sneaker, I ride my scooter wearing these white Sarah Flint heels—they're so comfortable.

One profession wasn't enough for multi-hyphenate Ajula Acharia. A double life (triple, really) is how the busy entrepreneur explains her dynamic careers: an early stage Investor for a portfolio of female-founded startups, the co-founder of media company Desi Hits!, and the manager of Priyanka Chopra Jonas. 

While her career endeavors are diverse, Acharia explains that her business and professional life are often one-and-the-same. Mixing business and pleasure— like investing in Jonas's restaurant, SONA, is part of the excitement for Acharia. She wouldn't have it any other way. 

Her relationships and a recent move to New York from L.A. have also become a source of inspiration for her workday wardrobe. With a growing number of south Asian events on her calendar alongside global business partners, Acharia finds more reasons to wear traditional Indian garments that are both celebratory and empowering—a reminder of Acharia's Indian upbringing in the U.K. She's also trading her high heels for sneakers.

Ahead, we chat with the entrepreneur about her adaptable workwear style, the designers she's supporting, and her grown-up love for traditional Indian attire. 

On Her Morning Routine:

I wake up in the morning and do the worst thing ever—I reach for my phone. It's buzzing from the moment I wake up. I'll wake up to 100 messages. I like to do so much of my business on WhatsApp because I have such a global presence. I usually have something going on in London, Mumbai, L.A., and New York. Everybody I work with gets me there, whether it's Priyanka, one of my startups, or my founders. 

Then, I will rise and make myself a ginger chai, which is my thing. I'm so known for my tea. Everybody knows that I'm obsessed with it. Priyanka [threw] a birthday party for me [recently], and she goes, "What do you want to drink apart from tea?"  

I don't work out every day, but I'll try and work out a couple of times a week. Then I'll come back, shower, and start my ZOOM calls.

On Getting Dressed:

I'm always cold. It's rare for me not to feel cold, so the weather app is the first thing I check when thinking about what I'll wear. Compared to L.A., the weather in New York can be so crazy. My style is very diverse, but I indulge in that—and what I decide to wear depends on who I'm meeting. If I'm meeting someone in fashion or finance, I'll step it up. Payal Kadakia of Class Pass is one of my founders, and she's influenced me to meet her in workout gear.

On New York versus L.A. Style:

Everything in New York feels like it's about footwear. Right now, I want to find good sneakers and buy all of the things that look good with those sneakers. I'm thinking about a pair from Chanel.

I live in downtown Manhattan, and I want to be able to walk everywhere, especially in the warm weather. When I lived in L.A., my fashion wasn't about that. I wore heels and dresses for meetings and events and drove everywhere, or I was in sneakers and sweatpants at home. It was a clear distinction. 

In New York, I can find a place to wear everything—from jeans to dresses to jackets. I am loving this local New York designer named Dafne right now. She makes hand-painted and embroidered jackets. There's also another piece of my life, my Indian clothes. I'm obsessed with them.

On Feeling Empowered:

I met a designer named Falguni Peacock through a friend, and she re-introduced me to Indian fashion. 

Indian clothes were always too big for me when I was young. I grew up hating Indian clothing my parents would force me to wear, but they can be beautiful when they fit well. 

Peacock's clothes are incredible, and she has been dressing me in traditional Indian attire for more than a decade now. When I walk into a room in a Saree or a Lehenga, I feel like it's a piece of armor.

Of course,  I feel like a badass walking into any meeting wearing a power suit too.

Black suits with white button-ups: The stuffy dress codes enforced during Tanya Taylor's first profession (finance) ultimately led her down a different career path— that of a fashion designer. "That uniform was stifling all versions of myself," recalls Taylor, so she enrolled in a fashion course at Central Saint Martins in London and applied to the design program at Parsons in New York City.

Her first post-grad fashion internship with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's line, Elizabeth and James, ignited Taylor's excitement for contemporary fashion: ready-to-wear with a designer aesthetic at an accessible price point. "I found the contemporary industry so challenging. [The customer] is a real person, with a real body, with a real budget, and I wanted to take that on," she explains.

Through Taylor's involvement with the Vogue Fashion Fund and their mentorship resources, Taylor was able to get her eponymous fashion line off the ground. "My philosophy towards what I want to create has been emotionally instinctual. I have stories I want to tell through my collections and know the women I want to speak to," Taylor says. "That approach has helped build something that feels personal and inclusive, and it's given me purpose." Now, celebrating 10 years in the business, and leading a team of 30 women, Taylor explains how the office can be the best source of fashion inspiration and why excellent tailoring is the key to looking confident in her work wardrobe.

On Her Morning Routine:

Usually, I'm up at 7:00 a.m. On Mondays, I play tennis at the Midtown Tennis Club, and that's my favorite way to start the week. On other days, I wake my kids up at 7:30. I have two boys, 4-and-a-half and almost 2 years old, and I make them breakfast. I like to go all out with way too much sugar. It's how I grew up. I do French toast, waffles, and sometimes pancakes. And I can do it fast—I can whip it up and finish breakfast by 8:30.

About two days a week, I go to a breakfast meeting near where I live in the West Village and then head to the studio. It's my happy place.

On Creating Outfits:

I take seven to 10 minutes to throw an outfit together quickly. If I overanalyze my outfit, it stifles my creativity.

I layer a lot, and I always have some play on texture. I wear our collection every day, so I often pepper in pieces that compliment that. I like investing in bold designer items that I can layer with our neutrals. I buy a lot of Totême for basics and accessories. We don't do that much tailoring, so I'll pair a gorgeous Celine blazer or trouser with one of our feminine pieces. I buy a lot of vintage sweaters, sweater sets, and outerwear—Loulou Studio has excellent knitwear. I just purchased this old Dries Van Noten hot pink satin bra, and I want to wear it over our cotton T-shirt dress.

On The Details:

I like when my print or color story feels like you want to look closer. I like deciding where the boldness and volume are. Comfort is also so important. I'm standing most of the day, walking around the studio, in the design room, and moving things around. I need details, like pockets, so I can carry my phone. I wear clothes very realistically.

As a former accessories director at Elle, Maria Dueñas Jacobs was used to scouring the market for the best accessories in every category. Impressive kid's jewelry, however, had her stumped as she hunted for pieces appropriate for her 5-year-old daughter Luna, who was so enamored by Jacobs' fine jewelry that she'd often fish them out of her mom's jewelry box.

Resourceful by nature, Jacobs took matters into her own hands. "I said, Luna, I will make you these pieces," she laughs. She did just that. After seven months of Googling and gathering advice from network connections, Jacobs had samples, packaging, and a brand name—Super Smalls. Plus, an emphatic seal of approval from Luna and her other two daughters. All three couldn't believe they could touch the jeweled prototypes.

The glitzy collection of kid's accessories, encased in bold yellow packaging—a gender-neutral color that nods to inclusivity—soon caught the eyes of Jacobs' editor and influencer friends, too. Just over two years later, her "small and nimble" side hustle flourished into a full-time career.

With a newly minted office space and an expanding all-women team, we sat down with the fashion vet to chat about her style choices as she grows into a founder role and how she brings her joyful fashion philosophy into the workplace.

On Getting Dressed:

"We're doing investor meetings right now, and I think about first impressions a lot. Whether on Zoom, from the waist up, or in person, I'm like, Who's the person I want them to think I am?

"As I've gotten older, I've honed my style and what clothing I feel good wearing. I have looks cataloged in my head. I know I like a stripe. I know I like denim. I know I like monochrome white looks. I'm always wearing jewelry because that's a big part of my identity.

"I wear fewer heels now than when working as a magazine editor. I'm much more into sneakers. I like to have a reason to get dressed up, but I've always been a casual person. During the workday, I'm about comfort."

On Joyful Clothing:

"The dress code can be anything in our office—we are a team of six women and dress for each other— it's fun to see what everyone's wearing.

"I'm a believer that fashion has the power to make people happy. It can be mood-altering. I like anything that brings joy and has a sense of humor. That doesn't always translate to fashion, but Miu Miu and Prada do that so well. When I need a boost, I try to put more effort into my look, and it usually works. 

"Of course, I'm also very attached to the color yellow because of Super Smalls. My sister, who works with me, gifted me the most beautiful Loro Piana sweater in our brand yellow. It's so cheerful and makes me very happy. I've always loved the color, but especially now."

On Jewelry:

"I attach memories to every piece in my jewelry collection. I love heirloom quality and gravitate towards fine jewelry statement pieces. I didn't have that grandmother to pass down jewelry, but I will be that grandmother.

"Accessories are also the easiest way to dress something up. I always have lots of rings on, which feel like my armor, and I'm constantly wearing my $33 Super Smalls necklace. It has a real four-leaf clover inside."

In just three and a half years, Emily Tisch Sussman became a mother of three. Before that, she had never really contemplated how kids would impact her dynamic career in D.C., working on Presidential campaigns, legislative change, and reporting as a political strategist on CNN. 

As it turned out, kids would change the course of Sussman's career entirely. "I started to think about what I wanted to see in the world and what position I'm in to contribute. It wasn't straight politics anymore," she explains.

The shift, alongside her interest in connecting and empowering women, led to Sussman's latest endeavor, the She Pivots podcast. Launching this May in partnership with Marie Claire, the series, hosted by Sussman, explores the journey of other successful women who have found their eventual success through bold, sometimes risky choices and non-linear career moves. 

We sat down with the host to hear about how her vibrant but unfussy work wardrobe is the key to her high-performing workdays as she interviews subjects from her home office. Spoiler alert: she ditched stretch pants a long time ago. 

On Her Morning Routine:

"I get up a little bit before my kids do, and I immediately look at my phone. I know we're not supposed to do that, but I still do it anyway! 

I know some people meditate, but I don't. Every morning, I check in with my mom and sister, my mom's group text chains, and my high school friends. Those check-ins with women who are important to me are like morning affirmations.

Then I work out, alternating with my husband on responsibilities like the kid's breakfasts, packing lunches, and getting them dressed. I work out outside, usually running, under almost any circumstances unless it's freezing, snowing, or raining. I need the air. I need to see space.

Even though my kids are on three different schedules, it's a priority for me to drop them off at school. So, I drop them off and get ready for the day."

On Getting Dressed:

"I put on jeans every day— pretty comfortable jeans— I ditched stretch pants as soon as I could post-pregnancy.

I will never get behind the low rise jeans trend; high rise forever— I like Mother Jeans and Veronica Beard. Having kids left my body in a different state—one that reminds me my body is now more about health, strength, and functionality and not about conforming to a trend. 

I also like bright colors and patterns and mixing patterns alongside unexpected shapes— like Joey Wolffer's reworked neck tie blouses— but nothing fussy that I can't move around in. I don't want my clothes to hold me back from playing with my kids.

Recently, though, I've been playing with a completely monochromatic look— it's an easy uniform solution that pushes me slightly out of my comfort zone in a good way.

Also, I hate wearing socks and shoes at home. When I go out, I'll wear Dansko work clogs."

On Shopping Her Closet:

"I like to wear brands that make me feel good and have a principle behind them. I also prefer to support female-founded brands— those pieces feel like a piece of armor, like we're women who are all in this together.

Last summer was the first year I fit back into my pre-baby clothes. So, I'm going to be shopping in my closet a lot for summer. I have a ton of hand-me-downs from my mom and my grandmother. I think almost every day I wear something from one of them. I love giving pieces new life by wearing them in different ways. 

My grandmother had this beautiful, long Armani jacket that she wore to my wedding. My mom just pulled it out last weekend, and I wore it over a T-shirt and jeans. It felt great."

On Empowering Pieces:

"I feel my best self if I'm in an outfit that only I could put together— it probably includes eclectic patterns and shapes. I almost never change my jewelry; I am usually wearing some of Kendra Pariseault's pieces, but I tend to bring in some of my grandmother's jewelry to feel powerful. I imagine the Lion King when they say, 'The ancestors are with you.'"

As a design student and shoe lover attending New York's Fashion Institute of Technology in the mid-2000s, Sarah Flint recognized a significant problem in the luxury shoe market. Designer heels weren't often wearable in real-life settings, frequently designed with sky-high platforms and mile-high stilettos. 

With a desire to craft stylish and comfortable shoes, Flint moved to Italy to study under artisanal shoemakers who had mastered the engineering and manufacturing of footwear, inside and out.

Those techniques, alongside features like arch support and extra footbed padding, became the backbone for her namesake shoe line, Sarah Flint. Nine years later, the young designer has amassed a cult following, including celebrity names like Meghan Markle and Amal Clooney. With curated collaborations—her newest alongside the iconic handpainted wallpaper company Gracie—a bridal launch, and plans to expand her brick-and-mortar presence, having a reliable workwear wardrobe is more important to Flint than ever.

We sat down with Flint to hear about her love of vintage fashion and how she dresses from the feet up.

On Getting Dressed:

"I love that there doesn't feel like there's a typical workday. I go through different phases. If I'm in a design period, I'll shut myself away and design for a couple of days. Then I'll resurface and meet with my team.

My work-from-home uniform is either a turtleneck or a cashmere sweater, one of our silk scarves, and leggings on the bottom.

My favorite place to spend the workday outside the house is in our stores and with our customers. We have a permanent store in Dallas, and we're about to open up in Nashville. 

For those days, I always get dressed from the feet up. It's definitely a tough decision as to what shoe to go with. I have hundreds and hundreds of pairs of shoes. I have my old faithful styles, like our Natalie flat and our Emma pump, that we make in new materials every season. When a new season's been released, I always want to show off my shoes, so I pick the outfit out around those."

Her Style in Three Words:

"Timeless. Eclectic. Tailored."

On Her Workwear Wardrobe Staples:

"I'm a big dress wearer because it is so simple and easy and I love prints and patterns. I'm also a huge vintage person. I inherited many of my grandmother's clothes and scarves, some of my most treasured pieces. I have a plaid Yves Saint Laurent jacket with big shoulder pads. It looks great with any kind of trousers or jeans. I also have a cropped black Chanel jacket that goes great with dresses. I love mixing vintage with more modern styles."

On Her Favorite Designers:

"I've discovered Austrian designer Lena Hoschek in the last few years. She's got beautifully tailored pieces. I have quite a few dresses from her, and she makes excellent high-waisted trousers. 

I love the crepe and knit pieces from the Australian brand, Scanlan Theodore. I always wear a Scanlan Theodore jacket if I have an investor meeting. 

I also love Monbouquette Jewelry from a mother-daughter design duo. They make earrings that are two in one. They have a hatch, and they can be this beautiful dangling earring or a smaller post version."

For Sara Naghedi, everything changed in 2015 when she became a mother. She was no longer proud of her work at the fast-fashion brand where she had spent a decade as a bag designer.

In 2016, as a side project and a creative outlet, the new mother began to design a handful of seasonless handbags on her own terms—which, for Naghedi, meant ethically and sustainably produced in small batches. In 2020, she decided there was no better time to shift her career focus, and Naghedi, her eponymous handbag line, became a full-time job.

The collection, known for its versatile handwoven neoprene totes —great for traveling and work—started as a direct-to-consumer brand. Stores like Bloomingdales and Shopbop have since picked it up.

As a result, the entrepreneur has been busier than ever. We sat down with the designer to chat about home office wardrobes, investment pieces, and mood-boosting fashion.

On Her Morning Routine:

I have three children, a 5-year-old daughter, and 3-year-old twin boys. They've been waking up early and not affording me the chance to get ready for the day. Ideally, I'd like to do that. Every day is a little different for me. The mornings are hectic, and my kids run my schedule. Sometimes I work out after dropping them off at school, and then I come home and change for the day. One significant change for us in COVID was that we left our showroom. My co-founder and I now work from home.

On Her Work-From-Home Uniform:

In the summer months, I wear dresses, dresses, dresses. It's a no-brainer in the morning, but I feel put together. When I want a minimalist aesthetic, I love Toteme and Jil Sander. 

I just bought a beautiful cotton Jil Sander dress that I plan to wear in the summer. I can dress it up or dress it down— you can't go wrong with that.

For feminine pieces, I reach for Agua Bendita. I am obsessed with them right now. Looking at their dresses makes me happy.

On Her Shopping Philosophy: 

When you're in this line of work, you are constantly browsing. It's essential to see what's out there— but I try not to shop too frequently. 

I always loved going into stores and shopping. I wouldn't say I like the whole return process, and I'd like to try things on and make sure they fit. But since COVID, I've transitioned to more online shopping.

Seasonally, I ask myself what I might need, like a replacement jacket, a blazer, or a sweater.

I was never big on trends. I like classics. I've moved towards purchasing long-lasting pieces in the past five or six years. I know that those higher-priced items will stay in my closet.

Mona Akhavi wasn't always a leader in luxury goods. The entreprenuer started her career in technology after earning her degree in mechanical engineering from the University of British Columbia, followed by an MBA from Simon Fraser University. Her first foray into the world of tech was to help brands grow their e-commerce presence, leading her to found her own start-up—a technology platform that helped brands capitalize on influencer marketing. "Fashion and technology are my two biggest passions, but I also wanted to work on things that enable a better future for our planet and for our society," Akhavi says. 

Her current role as the CEO of VRAI—the lab-grown diamond brand backed by Leonardo DiCaprio, that’s likely taken your Instagram feed by storm—is doing just that. VRAI's diamonds are produced using hydropower in the Pacific Northwest, with zero mining involved. Their parent company, Diamond Foundry, created its own zero-emission technology that releases no greenhouse gases during the production process, and became Certified Carbon-Neutral in 2017. "There is all this wonderful opportunity that comes up if you align yourself with your values,”  Akhavi says.

Since Akhavi took the reins at VRAI in September 2019, the brand has expanded exponentially. They've branched out to both Europe and Asia, while gathering a celebrity following  that includes names like Gwen Stefani, Justin Bieber, and Jennifer Lopez.

"Consumers are demanding that brands showcase the origin of their products and that they are transparent when it comes to sourcing and the supply chain," Akhavi explains; Vrai offers that.

As a consumer herself, Akhavi's own style philosophy is aligned with sustainable values. We sat down with the busy CEO to hear about her mix-and match formula for building outfits, her love for layered jewelry, and how discovering new, slow fashion brands is a big part of her shopping experience.

Her Morning Routine

I try to be up around 6 or 6:30 a.m, L.A. time—both myself and VRAI are based here. We have remote teams in Europe and Asia that I speak with early in the morning and the day can get quite hectic very fast. Before I start work, I try to get in a session of yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises. Having an hour to balance and center myself is really important. After meditating, I do 30 to 40 minutes of cardio on the Peloton —it gets my energy up for the day. Then I have coffee of course, which is a big part of my morning. Whether I’m at home or going out for coffee, I seek out organic beans. 

After my coffee, I start with my skin routine. Colleen Rothschild has incredible products with natural ingredients. Her daily vitamin C serum keeps my skin happy for the day.

If I’m at home, I'll make a plant-based smoothie. It always has ginger, carrot, beets, kale, coconut milk and all sorts of berries in it, from raspberries to blackberries to strawberries. You have to get the antioxidants in!

Her Personal Style

I choose clothes that make me confident in my own skin, which in turn makes me feel comfortable. I tend to gravitate towards styles that are sleek and edgy, with a touch of fun glam.

Her Getting Dressed Process

I still get ready as if I'm leaving for work, even if I'm at home. I feel like that really sets you up for the day. If I’m traveling to visit one of VRAI's partners or showrooms, I pack a few essentials that are easy to mix-and-match. Accessories really set the tone for my outfit and I love layering them—pairing mixed metals together or sporting mixed diamond shapes. You can really dress an outfit up or down depending on which accessories you choose.

Her Work Uniform

My go-to pieces are blazers and a sleek, sculptured dress in a solid color. I usually have my statement diamond VRAI necklace on and a stack of rings. I love matching my shoes to my jewelry. I like to wear very colorful, but comfortable, stilettos.

When I'm taking calls from home I pay more attention to my earrings. They inject some fun and excitement into a remote work situation.

Her Shopping Philosophy

When I'm shopping, I'm always looking at how pieces are being sourced in addition to the supply chain. The supply chain is really where you see the most impact on the the community and how the production of that particular product affects the people and surrounding environment.

I love the designer Gabriela Hearst. Her sustainability principles completely resonate with me and her designs are timeless, yet modern.

My other go-to is Maison de Mode which was founded by Amanda Hearst, who is one of our partners. They’re one of my favorite ethical fashion retailers. They curate a unique selection of sustainable ready-to-wear and accessories brands. I keep on discovering new brands on the site.

The Piece That Makes Her Feel Empowered

Hands down, my tennis bracelet makes me feel invincible. This is the one piece that is with me through everything, from my morning routines to surfing and skiing to weddings and dinner events. It's durable and comfortable to wear and it offers the perfect amount of glam.

WW CEO Mindy Grossman has spent several decades in the fashion business. With successful turns at companies like Nike, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Home Shopping Network, she knows a thing or two about passionate consumers and explains that a string of bold risk-taking— dropping out of law school, breaking off an engagement, and blindly moving to New York City from Long Island at the age of 19— got her to where she is today.

Years later Grossman's risk-taking is still reaping rewards. Straight off of Oprah Winfrey’s ‘2020 Vision: Your Life in Focus Tour’ which ended in March 2020, Grossman began leading a global company through a pandemic. She was forced to make tough calls, impacting millions of people, in real time. One of those decisions was to take WW fully digital, which she and her team did across 12 different countries, in only six days.

While her schedule is jam-packed with Zoom calls, speaking engagements, and events, connecting with herself has also been a top priority for Grossman. That means sticking to rituals, participating in family time, and setting up an environment where she can thrive. Here’s what she wears to tackle the busy work day.

Her Morning Routine

I’m a fairly structured person. Pre-Covid I traveled 40 percent of the time, but that suddenly changed and we were permanently at home in our weekend place in Millbrook, New York. At the time, I didn't even have a work desk set up there. My daughter, her husband, and my two granddaughters were also living with us. Given the intensity of everything, I really needed to stick to a ritual.

Generally I wake up at 5:30am, put on the coffee, and print out the New York Times' crossword puzzle. My husband and I have a contest to see who can finish it faster. Then, I consume a very broad cross section of media in the morning—everything from Forbes to fashion. I lay out my clothes very methodically based on my schedule, get dressed, and head downstairs for breakfast.

On Getting Dressed:

There are a few things I think about when I’m getting dressed in the morning: What am I doing? Who am I meeting? What do I want to convey? Ultimately, though, I want to feel good about myself. You’ll never see me in sweats. Did I swap my heels for a fun Gucci sneaker and throw on some jeans while working from home? Yes.

My wardrobe is a combination of statement pieces and classics. I like to mix and match new and existing pieces to create outfits that are personal to me—I’ll never buy a look from the runway.

On Her Favorite Designers:

I love Alexander McQueen—my favorite piece is their leather peplum jacket. I can pair it with everything: a pencil skirt, black pants, boots. I just bought a new McQueen suit. The jacket has jeweled heart sleeves on them. I'm getting excited about shopping again.

In late November, I attended UNICEF’s Gala at Lincoln Center as a board member and bought a Dries Van Noten cocktail dress to wear along with “UNICEF blue” satin and bejeweled Balenciaga pumps. I love a statement accessory. I also happen to love a good leopard-anything.

On Family Time:

My daughter and I are both very passionate cooks. I would say I'm very good, but she's chef quality. Cooking together became our ritual. It’s a moment to relax. Even if I have to go back to work after dinner, it provides a nice break in the day. You have to find the moments that force you to disconnect or you'll never shut off your work-mode mentality.

On Her Style Evolution:

I’ve gotten more confident over time. I gravitate towards pieces that fit where I am at this point in my life and those are a lot different than when I started in this business.  I love to shop online at sites like Net-a-Porter, Farfetch, and Saks Fifth Avenue. My return rate is pretty low. The reality is that over time I've gotten a pretty good sense of myself and know what's going to work for me.

Shop Some of Mindy's Favorite Pieces:

Aside from the opening of Loeffler Randall's first-ever boutique in downtown Manhattan, Jessie Randall, recalls another big milestone in life: her wedding. Designing the fully customized event in 2003, pre-Pinterest, was in a way the catalyst to opening her own business (she even designed her own wedding dress). "My husband Brian [Murphy] and I met working in advertising and we had been toying with the idea of starting our own company. When we were able to self-produce this complicated event successfully, it encouraged us to take the leap to start our own brand together," she explains. With Randall's background in fashion design and sculpture and a devotion for hunting down and wearing vintage shoes, the two entrepreneurs (with Jessie as designer and Brian, the head of business)  dreamt up a small collection of footwear in their New York apartment and sent it off to Italy to be manufactured. After receiving their first prototypes, luxury retailer Bergdorf Goodman picked up the line, laying the groundwork for future collections.

Now, 17 years later, the duo is still going. They've added a full ready-to-wear collection to their repertoire for Spring '22 and they're setting their sites on a second brick-and-mortar location. Here, Randall tells us about her vast shoe collection and explains why she's feeling more inspired now than ever before.

Her Morning Routine: 

It's quite hectic and, to be honest, I'm not a morning person, so I try to sleep in as long as humanly possible. These days, it's all about getting my three children, who go to three different schools, out of the door. I sneak in a shower while my littlest one is getting ready. I wait at the bus with him and then I head towards the subway. We have a content creation studio in Industry City [in Brooklyn], so my husband Brian and I go over there to help with prop styling for shoots. Sometimes I'll go up to the floral district to refresh the flowers in our store on Prince Street.

Her Getting Dressed Strategy:

There's usually a pair of shoes that I'm really excited about and I tend to build my outfit around that. I've been really into chunky boots lately or I'll wear our chunky Judd fisherman sandals with a sock. I tend to re-wear a lot of my clothes, but each season I'll invest in a couple of really special things. I love to have a really amazing coat this time of year. It can be such a great bang for your buck—you end up wearing it so much. 

I've also been loving the look of a utility pant— they're so casual and cool. I never want to be too dressed up. I'll pair those with a frilly blouse or a sweater. We actually make these amazing puff sleeves sweaters and their sales contribute to the American Civil Liberties Union. I love that sweater. I have it in every color. 

On Her Aesthetic:

I love natural raw materials like wools, leathers, and cotton. I also gravitate towards pieces that have a special element to it—like a unique stitching. I love to see the care that's gone into the creation of whatever I'm wearing. I find comfort in that.

I'm drawn to small companies where there's a story behind the products. That really speaks to me. I've actually been finding a lot of smaller brands on Instagram lately.

On Her Shoe Collection:

It's huge. It's all Loeffler Randall. We turned my shoe closet into a bedroom for my youngest son when he was born, so now I have the tiniest closet and there are shoes everywhere. I tend to keep the five or six pairs of shoes that I wear the most by our front door. I get excited about a new shoe—right now it's our ballerina flat—but I tend to keep past season's shoes in the rotation as well. I just love the way shoes make people feel. They can be very emotional.  I've always wanted to create shoes that are worn year after year and that are meant to stay in your closet forever.

On Feeling Inspired:

I think you can get really inspired by just staying where you are. We designed some of our best products over the past year-and-a-half. We introduced our first slipper and now it's one of our best selling pieces. 

Having some time to be creative outside of the job ended up making me more creative in my job, but I'm excited to think about traveling again. My team and I used to travel to get inspired and we haven't done that in two years. I'm excited about the possibility of doing more of that.

"We have mental associations with clothing, based on the people who wear these pieces," explains Shakaila Forbes-Bell, a U.K.-based fashion psychologist. "When we wear the same clothes, we subconsciously embody the traits we associate with those people."

But if a bold, floral print dress or a smartly tailored suit à la a famous politician doesn't help you meet the day head on—look elsewhere. Commanding authority via fashion is less about the piece itself than it is about the feelings they bring out. "The more we wear a piece, the more value it holds," Bell explains. "In turn, these pieces take on a life of their own.” They can herald mood-boosting powers or help navigate tricky social situations.

As you head out into the world, armor yourself with pieces that embolden you—like a workhorse winter boot or an invest-in-yourself watch—but it’s important to remember that the power really lies in you.

The Bar Jacket

Known for its rounded hourglass silhouette, Dior's Bar jacket turns 74 this year. “The shape of your clothes can change a person's perspective,” explains Bell. “Women who wear tailored clothing are perceived as more intelligent. In turn, women wearing form-fitting jackets will feel more confident,” she says.

The Skirt Suit

Turn the patriarchy on its head with a high-slit skirt suit. "Suits often have a masculine connotation, but don't settle for a man's suit," says Bell. " A skirt suit exudes a feminine power that the wearer will draw strength from.

The Knit Dress

Embracing comfort may actually help you power through your day. “Not having the distraction of uncomfortable pieces can increase your cognition so that you’re actually able to perform better,” Bell says. “Pieces that are elevated, yet cozy, embrace the excitement of novelty with all of the positive benefits of comfort.”
