For the next few months, along with other fashion editors, I’ll be here covering the celebrity style trends currently taking up space in our minds and, inevitably, our wardrobes. First up: gym shorts.

The World Cup may be over, but the sports-adjacent trend that exploded alongside it this summer is still going strong. In the past year, athletic shorts have appeared on an all-star roster of celebrities, including Olivia Wilde, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. Forever the stylesetter, Zoë Kravitz gave an early masterclass in styling track shorts beyond the track when, last July, she paired classic black Adidas three-stripe shorts with a red T-shirt and heeled sandal mules.

But as someone who hadn’t paid much attention to gym or basketball shorts since I stopped running cross-country in high school, I remained skeptical. Could the item really work outside a workout? Fast-forward 12 months, and this summer’s celebrity outfits proved that the answer is yes.

Track Shorts, Off the Track

Athletic shorts are no longer limited to the nylon pairs you might wear for a morning run (though there are plenty of those around, too, if you’re leaning into the sportif trend). The latest versions come in everything from cotton twill and terrycloth to satin and taffeta, giving the sporty silhouette considerably more styling range than its humble roots may suggest.

While Kravitz first made a convincing case for wearing track shorts with heels, it was Ayo Edebiri—never one to shy away from an unexpectedly styled outfit or a daring red carpet look—who made me seriously reconsider the category. In the fall, The Bear star paired knee-length basketball shorts with a long-sleeve T-shirt, a sweater casually draped over her shoulders, and pointed-toe pumps. The shorts may have been court-ready, but the overall effect was city cool.

Satin and taffeta styles, in particular, are ripe for a celebrity-worthy elevation. In June, Zendaya test-drove a sunny yellow pair of boxer-style shorts, alongside a leather bomber, straight from the Louis Vuitton runway. Then, in July, Theron arrived at a photocall for The Odyssey wearing ice blue drawstring shorts with a silky button-down, blazer, and strappy stilettos. By that point, I was ready to hit “add to cart.”

How I Style It

As effortlessly cool as Kravitz makes athletic shorts look, my own style tends to lean more minimal. Unsurprisingly, I found myself drawn to the trend’s dressier interpretations.

I’m already a huge fan of Donni’s taffeta drawstring pants, which somehow make an easy, pull-on silhouette look far more refined than it actually is. So I immediately clocked the L.A. brand’s Silk Taffeta Racer Stripe Shorts. They come in versatile black, as well as softer cloud blue and mauve pink options, and strike exactly the balance I was looking for: relaxed but not overly sporty.

For their first outing, I borrowed from Theron’s styling formula, pairing the black shorts with an oversized short-sleeve button-down and a black blazer (which I would switch for a leather jacket, à la Hailey Bieber, in the fall). Since I was sporting the look for a lunch out, rather than something more formal like a photocall the office, I injected a pop of color with orange Prada kitten heels in a similarly lustrous fabric. To add an even more playful contrast to the more severe black-and-white palette, I’ve completed the look with Loewe’s pink balloon-like sunglasses.

The combination made the perfect warm-weather look that could go from a coffee meeting to happy hour to an alfresco dinner: dressed up on top, breezy on the bottom.

For a more off-duty approach, I pulled inspiration from Edebiri and wore the shorts with a cotton long-sleeve T-shirt and a cashmere sweater draped over my shoulders (for that nighttime breeze). Rather than heels, I finished the outfit with flat slingbacks. (Minimal flip-flops would work just as well, especially for a beachside or vacation setting.)

Before running out the door, I grabbed my current go-to tote bag, a collaboration between Big Night (my favorite food and entertaining store in New York City) and editor-favorite Parker Thatch, which I wear everywhere from the beach to the farmer’s market.

The result of bringing the athletic silhouette back into my wardrobe? I’m not quite ready to start running cross-country again. But wearing gym shorts off the field? That’s a sport I am starting to get behind.

Last month, when Law Roach outfitted Zendaya in a red-and-black Louis Vuitton look, the legendary stylist didn't just have method dressing for Spider-Man: Brand New Day in mind. The superhero shades also gave one of summer's hottest color combinations the red carpet close-up it deserves.

Days after the black tailcoat and tomato-red shorts debuted on Louis Vuitton's Cruise 2027 runway, creative director Nicolas Ghesquière loaned the two-piece to Zendaya for Spider-Man's Amsterdam premiere. Even without a spiderweb motif (she saved those for London, Rome, and Mexico City), the shorts set was an on-theme homage to Spider-Man's suit. From there, red and black wasted no time swinging to another fashion insider's summer color palette: Jennifer Lawrence.

The color combination looked more wearable than ever on Lawrence, who stacked a bright windbreaker from Texan label Roucha over black Alo Yoga leggings in New York City for a Pilates class.

Across the pond, Alexandra Leclerc wore red and black to the British Grand Prix. The wife of Charles Leclerc had as much of a reason for embracing the colors as Zendaya—the Formula 1 champion is on team Ferrari, after all. Before her husband accepted the first-place trophy, Alexandra's ruby red Jacquemus bag proved where her loyalties lie. She also deserves extra points for coordinating the color to her dog's harness and leash.

She sourced Jacquemus again to complement her collarless black jacket. To finish her paddock outfit, pointy Prada mules resumed the red color story, from below blue jeans from Frame.

Perhaps Alexandra left her mark on London's celebrity style circuit. A day later, Charlize Theron attended a local after-party for The Odyssey in custom Givenchy, which featured a velvet, scarlet cowl-neck dress and black leather gloves from the Fall 2026 fashion show, as well as black T-strap heels.

While The Odyssey stars declared the duo an eveningwear essential, Monica Barbaro followed Lawrence's lead in NYC with a more casual look. She chose black leggings, too, except her Self-Portrait pair was capri-length to match the early-aughts nostalgia of her layered tank tops from NYC-based brand Kate Barton. Barbaro's belt, Jimmy Choo sandals, and Khaite x Oliver Peoples sunglasses were also black, which let her cherry-tinted tank do all the talking.

Thanks to such star-studded endorsements, red-and-black made quite a name for itself this summer. However, it originally turned heads during Fall 2026 fashion shows. The Givenchy two-piece that inspired Theron's custom dress (an asymmetrical cowl-neck top styled over barrel-leg trousers) first debuted on the runway in March.

Also at Paris Fashion Week, Chanel sent out a cap-sleeve column dress with contrasting splotches of maroon and black. Some of creative director Matthieu Blazy's more subtle takes on the trend limited red to the accessory department—drop-waist belts, croc-embossed bags, coat collars, and even oversized buttons—while black served as the foundation.

We'll never know if Balenciaga's red-and-black look inspired Lawrence, but the leather jacket and leggings bore a resemblance to her Pilates outfit. J.Law's baggy windbreaker wasn't too far a shape-shift from the brand's bomber's funnel-neck collar.

Meanwhile, Celine's Fall 2026 collection tapped into the skirt-over-pants trend, with a ribbed long-sleeve turtleneck and ultra-high-rise trousers. The model's bowler hat and top-handle tote gave the color combination a Western twist, without losing its superhero suave.

Just in time for Team Spain's World Cup win and the Spider-Man: Brand New Day theatrical release, red is making a strong case to replace "Cloud Dancer" as Pantone's 2026 Color of the Year. So far, Katie Holmes, Gwyneth Paltrow, Lawrence, and more have styled various reds with butter yellow, peony pink, and cool blue, but black creates the edgiest color combination by far.

Luckily for fans (of Spider-Man, or red and black), the pairing isn't going anywhere. Since it dominated Fall 2026 runways, its busiest season is still in the queue. So, make sure your closet is stocked for red-and-black's peak by shopping the styles below.

Zendaya's current press tour reign will be the stuff of legends. Mark my words: One day, they'll write about her simultaneous Spider-Man x Odyssey press tours in fashion history books. The thematic dressing, the carefully sourced archival couture, the attention to detail—it's the kind of thing we editors pray for on a red carpet.

Zendaya has been the supreme method dressing champion for nearly a decade. She was method dressing before it even had a name. And in doing so, the actor single-handedly changed the way we as a society expect from red carpets—and what celebrities wear on them.

Tom Holland is merely the latest star who's fallen happy victim to his wife's sartorial influence. At last night's premiere of Spider-Man: Brand New Day in London, the newly married pair walked the carpet looking every bit the method dressing power couple.

Zendaya, of course, was outfitted in a grandiose, spiderweb-themed gown—her Spider-Man premiere signature. She wore a couture design from Tamara Ralph's Fall 2026 runway collection, which was covered in an intricate network of glistening rectangular crystals. In the camera flashes, the actor sparkled like a cobweb covered in morning dew.

The arachnid imagery only continued from there, culminating in the form of a gilded spider brooch, perched on her lower back.

Naturally, her husband took the cue, coordinating his own red carpet look with his wife's. Holland arrived in a double-breasted suit the color of a fine wine. He wore a necktie to match, topping the Windsor knot with a crystallized brooch of his own. The eight-legged accessory came embellished with black opals and diamonds, courtesy of fine jeweler Pragnell.

Arachnid-themed pins have been a recurring theme in Zendaya's Spider-Man press tour looks. On July 24, the star wore another webbed naked dress, with an even larger spider brooch at the Shanghai premiere.

Matching brooches paying tribute to the film where you first met? That's true love if I've ever seen it.

Wherever Hailey Bieber's Gap jeans go, the flip-flops trend follows. But when Kaia Gerber or Zendaya style summer denim, don't expect them to follow suit in open-toe shoes. This year, Hollywood's most stylish stocked up on warm-weather flats, leaving pedicure-forward sandal trends behind them.

While Bieber rotated between her favorite kitten heel and sky-high flip-flops, other VIPs held down the flats fort in closed-toe styles that will remain in rotation through winter. Gigi Hadid wore the soft loafers trend with everything, but especially sky blue denim; Zendaya's baggy jeans and Maison Margiela Tabi Ballet Flats proved they're a match made in freaky shoe heaven; and Gerber stayed loyal to the ballet flats she designed with French footwear brand Repetto.

Don't expect Bieber to retire jeans and flip-flops outfits anytime soon. (Seriously, the uniform even starred in her Gap campaign.) Gigi Hadid's Summer Jeans and Loafers

Toward the end of spring 2026, Zoë Kravitz, Jennifer Lawrence, and Gigi Hadid made the soft loafers trend a must-have for fashion-forward New Yorkers. Hadid, for one, didn't hibernate ruched high-vamp slippers for summer. Days before the 2026 Met Gala, her beloved burgundy pair from Miu Miu matched the nostalgic feel of her striped Guest In Residence top and flared Frame jeans.

Maison Margiela Tabis are right next to Christian Louboutins on Zendaya's press tour packing list. Before The Odyssey, she saved spots in her luggage for two pairs from the brand, including split-toe loafers and matching ballet flats. The actress's velvet plum purple ballerinas embarked on their own epic journey, appearing beneath plenty of light-wash denim looks.

Kendall Jenner's Summer Jeans and The Row Loafers

Meanwhile, Kendall Jenner traded the soft loafers trend for The Row's sold-out Canal style, which features more structured soles and black leather toe boxes. By pairing the loafers with cigarette jeans, a black bowling bag, and the perfect white tee, Jenner looked fresh from a '90s J.Crew catalog.

Dakota Johnson's Summer Jeans and High-Vamp Flats

If Dakota Johnson could've attended Taylor Swift's wedding with high-vamp flats as her plus-one, I believe she would've. The summer 2026 shoe trend rarely leaves her side. Just last week, Phoebe Philo's Gathered Flats (beloved by Rihanna, Tracee Ellis Ross, Bieber, and more) elevated her Levi's jeans.

Kaia Gerber's Summer Jeans and Block-Heel Ballet Flats

Kaia Gerber's denim collection gives Bieber some competition, at least where the sheer amount of shades and silhouettes are concerned. However, for each jeans outfit, Gerber returns to the Kaia Ballet Flats from her recent collaboration with Repetto.

The black suede style has everything you know and love about the classic ballet flats—including rounded toes and bow-tied vamps—but with distinct block heels. Since they stand less than 0.8 inches tall, yes, the shoes are still considered ballet flats. Itty-bitty heels can't hurt when you're sporting something as striking as the Chanel Maxi Flap Bag.

Millie Bobby Brown's Summer Jeans and Ballet Flats

The "baggiest bottoms of the season" trophy goes to Millie Bobby Brown's date-night look. The actress and her husband, Jake Bongiovi, matched each other's black-top-and-blue-jeans energy, but Brown cuffed her oversized hems to reveal a pair of leather ballet flats.

Christian Louboutin stilettos are the trusted sidekick of modern-day superhero Zendaya. As with her press tours for The Drama and The Odyssey, the pointy sky-high pumps have followed her to the ends of the earth while promoting Spider-Man: Brand New Day. On July 27, Zendaya and her beloved Louboutins reunited at the Marvel movie's L.A. premiere, where they showcased a method-inspired take on the sheer shoe trend.

Zendaya's longtime stylist, Law Roach, saved the most extravagant black gown for the film's last red carpet event: a gravity-defying dress from Ashi Studio's Fall 2026 Couture collection, which featured a cinched corset, a voluminous high-low skirt, and antennae on either side of the plunge neckline. "It's more of an abstract way to present the spider," Roach told Variety while Z showcased her creepy-crawly couture.

Meanwhile, the Emmy winner's most on-the-nose tribute to Spider-Man appeared a few feet south of her diamond Boucheron earrings and east-west engagement ring by Jessica McCormack.

Zendaya stayed loyal to Christian Louboutin pumps, but these weren't your average So Kates. The red bottoms stood just as tall as her signature silhouette, except Italian leather traded places with semi-sheer mesh. On top, black webbing set the pedicure-revealing pair apart from other takes on the naked shoe trend. To take the method dressing masterclass to the next level, lifelike 3-D spiders crawled across Zendaya's transparent toe boxes and ankles.

If Marvel hadn't already cast Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, I'd say the actress was teasing the evolution of her character in the new superhero movie.

Speaking of evolutions, it's about time Zendaya gave her affinity for the mesh ballet flats trend a red carpet makeover. Perhaps—when she and Roach brought their vision to Christian Louboutin—naked heels worn by Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, and Anne Hathaway made it on her mood board.

This summer, it's not enough for fashion girls to flaunt their pedicures: They're displaying every square inch of their soles.

Back in May, Rihanna elevated her bomber jacket, tank top, and black trousers with entirely transparent wedge sandals. Fast forward to Paris Couture Week, Lopez pulled off peep-toe Gianvito Rossi pumps sculpted entirely from peekaboo PVC. As recently as The Odyssey press tour, Hathaway proved sheer Aquazzura wedges are pregnancy-proof on Late Night With Seth Meyers.

Zendaya's Spider-Man: Brand New Day era may be over, but the sheer shoe trend will live on. (According to Fall 2026 fashion shows from Mugler, Saint Laurent, and Louis Vuitton, we're in for another season of see-through footwear.) Expect no shortage of the heatwave-ready heels on August's red carpets—minus Z's fresh-from-the-terrarium tarantulas.

Shop the Sheer Shoe Trend Inspired by Zendaya

At this point, I never wonder if Zendaya's next Spider-Man: Brand New Day look will spin its own webs. Instead, I dream about how. So far, the motif appeared on earrings, a vintage Armani dress, and the chainmail back of her John Galliano look. But on July 24, sheer spiderwebs became the thread that held Z's naked dressing moment together.

While I was sleeping, Zendaya stole the show at the Spider-Man premiere in Shanghai. What a treat it was to wake up to my favorite stylesetter in a black-and-white dress from Versace's Spring 2016 Couture collection.

Her longtime stylist, Law Roach, altered the scoop neckline, asymmetrical drapery, and illusion cut-outs to perfection. Whether it was intentional or not, white strands of silk stretched out from her hip in the shape of a spider. Meanwhile, black cobweb mesh and a beige bodysuit gave the method-inspired look a naked makeover. The hip-high slit, which showcased her white Christian Louboutin stilettos, made the gown even sultrier.

In addition to pulling from Versace's archives, Roach pinned a diamond spider-shaped brooch by David Webb (another Spider-Man call-out?) to the white band atop her hip. Thanks to the lemon yellow sapphire, the bedazzled insect almost looked alive.

To complete the red carpet look, Zendaya frosted herself further with small diamond stud earrings, her east-west engagement ring from Jessica McCormack, and her beloved Rolex Lady-Datejust.

Sure, the Atelier Versace collection debuted a decade ago and was described as "athletic couture" then, but any of the designs would've matched the Spider-Man press tour's memo with its web-like hints.

Symmetrical curvatures, geometric cables, and netted sequins hugged the models like freshly woven webs. Similar linework appeared on accessories, too, including a diamond collar-style necklace worthy of a red carpet walk with Zendaya.

If you haven't gathered by now (especially after The Odyssey press tour), Zendaya and Roach do their research. Whether it's sourcing a circa-1940s dress from an independent vintage collector to match the theme or studying designer runway shows for potential ties to her film, they'll do anything in the name of fashion.

Hats off to Zendaya and Roach for another applause-worthy decision.

The track shorts trend is running laps around this season's biggest sports styles. Earlier this summer, when windbreakers, rugby shirts, and leggings passed the baton to thigh-sweeping bottoms, track shorts took the lead in the race to becoming a celebrity staple.

What was once an elasticized waistband essential in a runner's gym bag became the winning silhouette on Spring/Summer 2026 runways. Ann Demeulemeester, Lacoste, No. 21, Onitsuka Tiger, and more warmed up the track shorts trend before it went to the championship round: the celebrity street style circuit.

Each designer brave enough to try track shorts demonstrated their rare ability to shape-shift from one aesthetic to another. Sure, the moisture-wicking silhouette was designed for marathons, relays, and 100-meter sprints, but it looked boho-chic during Fendi's show, preppy under Onitsuka Tiger's direction, and even Western next to No. 21's flannel shirt.

Fashion girls took note of its versatility immediately. Iris Law wore black basketball-length bottoms with a girly cardigan and a Coach Tabby Bag; Zendaya's Christian Louboutin pumps pushed track shorts outside their sporty comfort zone; and a triple-striped Adidas style matched the "I look this cool without even trying" energy of Zoë Kravitz's high-vamp ballet flats.

Picture a college athlete who's going on a date post-practice. In early June, Olivia Wilde fashion-ified that exact prompt in a baggy pinstripe button-down, a butter yellow baseball cap, socks-with-loafers, and tomato-red track shorts. It's the ultimate off-duty uniform, especially for fans of the borrowed-from-the-boys aesthetic.

Lola Tung's Track Shorts Outfit

There's no better place to test this shorts trend than at the 2026 World Cup. Lola Tung blended in with the soccer stars in a black tank top, cropped Adidas bottoms, and white Stan Smith sneakers. The Summer I Turned Pretty actor honored the stadium bag policy with an east-west Longchamp Le Pliage tote. Talk about a perfect pair: Le Pliages have been elevating athleisure looks for decades.

It'd be a severe understatement to say Zoë Kravitz is obsessed with cobalt blue track shorts from Adidas. The sold-out bottoms third-wheeled almost all of Kravitz's dates with her fiancé, Harry Styles. Wearing sneakers with the triple-striped shorts would've been too predictable for the fashion girl. So, she stuck to her tried-and-true summer shoes: high-vamp ballet flats.

It's time to add "check Law Roach's Instagram story" to your daily routine. The stylist extraordinaire saves some of Zendaya's best Spider-Man: Brand New Day press tour looks for the most loyal of his two million followers. On July 22, Roach's 15-second clip showcased Zendaya in a knee-length dress from the 1940s, which vintage collector Amanda Suter found on Facebook.

As the founder of Butch Wax Vintage, which specializes in vintage from the 1920s to the 1980s, Suter rarely sources archival looks for herself. The one exception? Anything with spiderwebs on it. Last Halloween, when she still hadn't worn the little black boatneck dress in her closet, she decided to list it online. "[Roach] messaged me immediately and said, 'Girl, I need that dress," Suter tells Marie Claire. That's right, Zendaya's stylist began planning her press tour looks while the Marvel movie was still filming.

"I messaged him, 'Holy sh*t, my god. Pardon my French, but you made my morning," says Suter. Once Roach received Z's approval, he wasted no time purchasing the 80-year-old piece, which featured jet-black rayon crêpe, small satin shoulder pads, a flared peplum waistline, and a sweeping bias-cut skirt. He ended up altering it to a cocktail length but, according to Suter, "kept it era-appropriate."

What drew Roach to the design was the bodice's hand-beaded sequin spiderweb. Aesthetically, it is the perfect successor to the actress's vintage John Galliano and Giorgio Armani dresses for Spider-Man: Brand New Day premieres, both of which likewise boasted spiderweb motifs.

Years ago, when Suter secured the vintage style via Facebook, it didn't have a label. During her research, she discovered that New York designer Jack Herszog created a similar beaded spiderweb motif in the '40s, though she is still not certain of its origins. For Suter, the dress, which was in pristine condition, was an investment piece. "It was pricey at the time, but for stuff like that, I'm just like, 'That's what I save for,'" she says.

This isn't the only vintage piece that Roach bought from Suter's "personal collection" with Spider-Man in mind. He took home another spiderwebbed look from the same time period: "That was another one that [Roach] needed immediately, no questions."

Roach originally reached out to Suter for a different press tour: Ariana Grande's red carpet run for Wicked: For Good. "It was unfortunate because by the time he would ask me [about certain styles] they would have sold," she says.

Much like the Spider-Man and Odyssey press tours, vintage played a special part in Grande's Wicked press tour. Last November, the Grammy winner posed in a circa-1952 ballgown from the designer of The Wizard of Oz costumes.

Suter says that she is grateful that Roach introduced "this really obscure niche of fashion from the '40s to a really broad audience." Let this dress influence fans of Zendaya and Roach to turn on Instagram Story notifications.

Zendaya's schedule has been incredibly hectic throughout 2026. From promoting the final season of Euphoria and the forthcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it feels as though the actress hasn't had a break. Currently promoting Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey alongside husband Tom Holland, Zendaya's press tour outfits have been, quite frankly, phenomenal. And for an evening out with Holland, Zendaya demonstrated exactly how to wear breezy white linen for summer.

Maura Higgins's tennis whites were so perfect for Wimbledon, she might've sent future guests back to the drawing board. Take it from her: The style stakes are higher this year.
