* More than 2 million children have been killed in armed conflicts; another 6 million are permanently disabled. More than 250,000 children continue to be exploited as child soldiers.

* The secretary-general recently listed 40 parties recruiting or using child soldiers in 19 areas of conflict around the world, such as Burundi, Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, and Somalia.
