Earlier this month, Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo each shared a photo from the video shoot for Maroon 5's 'Animal' on their Instagrams. They were covered in blood, so we thought we were thoroughly prepared for the gruesome things we'd see in the carnal ballad's video accompaniment. Alas, we were not.
In the clip, Levine plays a deranged butcher who spots Prinsloo in his shop and becomes obsessed. He then nosedives into stalkerdom: posting up amidst slabs of meat, taking creepy images of her in her apartment, and fantasizing about the pair fornicating as copious amount of blood are poured on them.
With lyrics like the following, should we be surprised?: "Baby, I'm preying on you tonight / Hunt you down eat you alive / Just like animals…Maybe you think that you can hide / I can smell your scent from miles / Just like animals."
Surprised? No. Disappointed? Definitely. We've always been fans of Levine and Prinsloo, but nuanced or not, this video sensationalizes the act of stalking. Upon first listen, we had a completely different video in mind (well, aside from Levine being shirtless).
