Teen Sailor Abby Sunderland Found Safe and Sound

Teen Sailor Abby Sunderland Found Safe and Sound

We’ve been chewing our nails down to the quick with worry about 16-year-old sailor Abby Sunderland, who yesterday sent out emergency rescue signals after losing satellite phone contact in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

Wonderful news this morning: A search plane was able to locate her earlier today, the L.A. Times reports. The crew spoke to her via radio and report that she’s in good health, with a space heater and two weeks’ worth of food. Heavy winds had broken her mast, which was dragging with her sail in the ocean, but the boat’s keel, which provides the foundation for the boat and helps it stay upright, was intact.

Abby will still have to wait for the rescue boats to reach her, which may not happen until later tonight, but the good news is that she’s safe. We're sending our thoughts and prayers to her and her family for a safe and happy reunion.
