The White-After-Labor-Day Rule Has Outlived Its Usefulness

Three summer skirts, a little strategic layering, and a convincing argument for ignoring the calendar.

Here’s an unsolicited hot take: I’m kind of sick of old-school wardrobe “rules.” We live in a world where microtrends flood our algorithms daily, and the weather can barely decide what season it is, so getting dressed is confusing enough without an arbitrary list of things we’re supposedly no longer allowed to wear.

“No white after Labor Day” is one fashion rule I’m more than ready to discard. I’m firmly in the wear whatever you want, whenever you want camp. In fact, I think there’s something much cooler about taking a distinctly seasonal piece and figuring out how to wear it during the exact opposite time of year—in a way that feels clever and very styled.

My white summer skirts are the perfect example. A lace mini, a pleated midi, and a linen maxi can all work well past Labor Day and even into the end of the year with a few tricks from my styling arsenal. Think cozy monochromatic dressing, unexpected color blocking, and lots of contrasting textures and patterns. If you’ve already mentally packed away your breezy whites for the season, consider this your permission to pull them right back out.

    A White Lace Mini

The hero wardrobe item here is pretty specific, but I think the technique can be applied to just about any white separate. An all-white outfit mixed with more seasonal weights—like my mohair crochet cardigan—and plenty of texture, from a ruffled sock to my secondhand Chanel lace skirt, immediately distracts from the idea that you’re wearing white outside of summer. Instead, it looks like a considered styling choice, which gets at the real secret to wearing white year-round: confidence.

I anchored everything with tan suede, shearling-lined Birkenstocks to break up the monochromatic palette and add another point of interest. But you could easily swap them for another pair of shoes—white or otherwise—and use them as a fun contrast against the rest of the look. The important part is to mix enough weights and textures so the monochromatic outfit feels layered rather than overly summery.

    A White Pleated Midi

A white midi skirt is one of those classic pieces pretty much everyone should own. Mine is a vintage silk Prada Sport skirt I thrifted, and it is a royal pain to keep clean—but no one said wearing white was easy. I love the simplicity of the piece, especially because it gives me a blank canvas to play with color blocking any time of year.

Once the temperature drops and tights weather arrives, I follow a very unofficial formula: three neutral elements (the white counts here) plus three pops of color. It sounds like a lot, but the neutrals keep everything grounded while the brighter pieces make the outfit feel intentional and fun. The result is a colorblocked look that feels right for cooler weather—and lets a white skirt slip seamlessly into the equation without reading remotely summery.

    A White Linen Skirt

Julia Gall styles a long white skirt with warm fall layers

I wrote a whole separate story about this skirt, but I honestly love it enough to wear year-round. It’s a breezy linen, but the fabric has some real weight to it, plus a double layer of cotton that makes it surprisingly convincing as a winter skirt. I also love the fullness of the shape—it feels a little grand and very 90s-ladylike.

For cooler weather, I leaned into pattern mixing with a Fair Isle sweater and herringbone tweed blazer, which immediately took the white linen in a much more seasonal direction. The whole thing felt very Ralph Lauren, especially once I added a few cold-weather accessories to really drive the point home. And I’m pretty sure Ralph doesn’t play by the “summer whites” rule either.

That’s really the trick here: surround something undeniably summery with enough rich texture, pattern, and seasonal accessories, and suddenly the fact that you’re wearing a white linen skirt in cold weather feels entirely beside the point.
