Lorde and her longtime boyfriend James Lowe broke up last year, and the split was a) heartbreaking, and b) served as a partial inspiration for the singer's upcoming album, Melodrama.

"After your heart is broken, music enters you on a new level," Lorde said during a recent interview. "You suddenly find yourself crying when 'Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart' comes on."

"It was my first major heartbreak," she continued, adding that the lyrics to "Green Light" are "really about those moments kind of immediately after your life changes and about all the silly little things that you gravitate towards."

That said, while it's perhaps fair to call "Green Light" a breakup song, Lorde says the album itself is more complicated. "[It's not a] breakup album; it's a record about being alone," she explained. "The good parts and the bad parts."

Just when you thought she couldn't be more relatable.
