We like the way Michelle Obama runs the White House. Like any good hostess, she sets the policy about wearing shoes in her house and she's very understanding when guests need a break from their high heels.
On Friday, at Variety's Power of Women ceremony in Los Angeles, Spanx founder Sara Blakely told Footwear News about the time the First Lady saved her aching feet from heels and let her walk barefoot around the White House.
"I stood in line at an event and they allowed us to get a one-on-one photo with Michelle Obama," Blakely explained. "I waited in the line so long that by the time I finally got up to Michelle Obama, I literally burst out, 'My feet are killing me,' and she goes, 'Girl, my feet are killing me, too.' I asked if I can take my shoes off and she said, 'Yes, and you can tell anyone who tells you to put them back on that Mrs. Obama said you can take them off.'"
This is the very definition of using your power for good. We can only hope, for all future White House guests' sake, that the next First Family carries on the Obamas' comfort-first shoe policy.
