5 Styling Lessons to Steal From Copenhagen Fashion Week Street Style

The result is an aesthetic that feels personal rather than aspirational.

Copenhagen Fashion Week has always operated on a slightly different sartorial frequency—less reverential toward the runway, more interested in the alchemy that happens once clothes hit the pavement. The city’s street style is a study in considered dissonance: gauzy skirts tempered by technical outerwear, louche tailoring interrupted by a performance sneaker, hyper-feminine transparency grounded with a fisherman sandal or deliberately clunky, inelegant flat. There’s an almost anti-prescriptive approach to proportion, where elongated bermudas, cocooning silhouettes, abbreviated hemlines, and (ludicrously) capacious layers coexist without feeling overly “styled.”

That’s precisely what distinguishes Copenhagen from the more codified fashion-week ecosystems of Paris or Milan, and even New York. Danish dress has long been informed by Scandinavian functionalism, but the new guard has complicated that minimalism with vivid irreverence, homespun textures, subcultural references, and a certain studied effortlessness. The result is an aesthetic that feels personal rather than aspirational—less total-look peacocking, more individual emotions.

Even the season’s It pieces are worn slightly askew, mixed with vintage, weatherproofed for cycling, or subjected to an unexpected high-low collision. Copenhagen’s real currency isn’t polish; it’s sprezzatura by way of pragmatism—clothes that suggest their wearer has impeccable taste, but far, far more interesting things to do than prove it.

To celebrate the true essence of the city, I scoured street-style collections for styling techniques that will inspire you to shop not only the virtual aisles but also your own closet. From lace-trimmed silk beneath heavy knitwear to belted balloon pants and tied poplin, these are the Copenhagen styling tips and tricks we’re taking with us. Skål!

Styling Tip #1: Don’t Save the Splendor for Special Occasions

Gleaming sequins, sparkle, and high-shine ready-to-wear and accessories are no longer exclusive to late-night soirees and exquisite gatherings. Instead, showgoers are embracing the preciousness of everyday by wearing their tinsel-clad garments with pared-back essentials, like button-up shirts tied around the waist and preppy polo shirts, aptly left unbuttoned.

Styling Tip #2: Belt the Waist of a Balloon Pant

Balloon pants first emerged (thank you, Alaïa and Altuzarra) as a trend and have since become a mainstay in every soigné person's wardrobe, whether minimalist-leaning or avant-garde. Take note of fashion’s Third Piece rule and add a waist belt over the top of a printed tee and across the hidden waistline of a balloon pant for additional detail and interest.

Styling Tip #3: Layer a Romantic Touch Beneath Heavy-Hitting Knitwear

Come fall and winter, a well-curated edit of sweaters becomes a non-negotiable. They can become a bit mundane if you don’t keep elevating them. How? Layering! The Copenhagen street-style set is an expert in fashion stacking: layer your knit with a lace-trimmed silk tank peeking out from below.

Styling Tip #4: Blend the Feminine with the Masculine

The appeal of a well-executed wardrobe often lies in the appearance of tension: temper silky softness with something decidedly harder. A structured leather blazer, substantial leather loafer, or boxy blouse gives all that fluidity a sharper architecture.

Styling Tip #5: Use a Scarf as a Waist Belt

Consider the scarf the season’s most insouciant alternative to a classic leather belt. Knotted loosely at the waist, a silky square or rectangle adds color, print, and a touch of texture to tailored trousers or a simple dress. In this case, it adds a contrasting pop to monochromatic shine.
