Goodbye, Wide-Leg Jeans—I’m Wearing Balloon Pants This Summer Instead

Roomy and breathable, this chic style is ideal for sizzling hot days.

There’s a new style of billowing bottoms heating up for summer. No, I’m not referring to wide-leg trousers, barrel bottoms, or baggy culottes—I’m talking about none other than balloon pants.

Named for its floaty silhouette that expands outward before tapering at the hemline, this rounded design was popularized in Western fashion by French couturier Paul Poiret. Also known as “harem pants,” the voluminous style reemerged in the late 20th century before making its latest comeback on the Spring 2026 runways.

At Altuzarra, bubble-hem trousers were paired with funnel-neck blazers, creating an elevated look that deserves a spot in every nine-to-five wardrobe. On the other hand, Balmain showcased a laid-back alternative alongside seashell-adorned bags and coastal knitwear, demonstrating that balloon pants are perfect for sun-kissed moments by the shore. Meanwhile, Michael Kors coordinated its version with a tank top, a cord necklace, and criss-cross sandals, assembling an easygoing outfit formula that I plan to copy for casual errand runs.

Beyond its runway-approved appeal, these trendy pants are inherently practical. Often cut from gauzy fabrics, they won’t stick to your thighs on sweat-inducing days—and for that reason, they should rank high on your list of summer essentials.

To that end, I’ve curated an edit of balloon pants that you can wear now and throughout the season ahead. Scroll on to discover a range of options that’ll rise to any warm-weather occasion.
