THE PEACEKEEPING MISSION IN SUDAN
* The conflict between the north and the south began after Sudan gained its independence in 1956. More than 2 million people have died, 4 million have been uprooted, and some 600,000 have fled as refugees.
* A separate conflict in Darfur began in 2003 when rebels began attacking government targets in the north. Some 2.5 million people are believed to have been displaced; more than 200,000 have been killed.
* The U.N. Mission in Sudan was established in 2005 to help refugees and displaced persons, and to protect human rights. To learn more, go to www.unmis.org.
