First Miss America of Indian Descent Crowned; Angry Tweets Ensue

"I swear I'm not racist but this is America."

Last night, Miss America crowned its ninety-second winner: Miss New York, a 24-year-old, Bollywood-dance-performing native from Syrcause. Miss New York also happened to be Nina Davuluri, the first Miss America winner of Indian American heritage. Immediately following Davuluri's win, racist tweets began pouring in condemning her participation in the competition. Declared one: "And the Arab wins Miss America. Classic." And another: "Miss America? You mean Miss 7-11."

What this country seems to be grossly disregarding is that Davulri is American. She may not look like one of the pageant's favorites, Miss Kansas Theresa Vail, a blonde, tattooed Army sergeant, but Davulri is representative of our nation's diverse culture of citizens. Record producer and drummer Questlove was one of the many viewers who tweeted back in defense of Davulri, and he couldn't have said it better: "i think its amazing that @NinaDavuluri was crowned Miss America. THIS is the american story."
