Actress Samira Wiley of The Handmaid's Tale and OITNB fame decamps to the colorful California town to soak up the sun, spicy margaritas, and mountain views. Here, her tips for an amazing desert getaway.
"I started going to Palm Springs four years ago with my wife, Lauren [Morelli]. Normally we stay at Sparrows Lodge. There are only about 20 rooms, so it feels very secluded. On vacation, the first thing I do is start with a cocktail: a jalapeño or habanero margarita with mezcal.
It’s so hot in Palm Springs, people don’t really do much, and that’s why I like it. To be able to sit down all day and get lost in a book by the pool is a real luxury. Bikes are available for guests at Sparrows, which you can use to cruise around town and enjoy the scenery. I find myself meeting the most amazing people from all walks of life, who often have no idea what I do, which is awesome.
I like to run early in the morning, before the sun comes up, when it’s cool outside. The surrounding mountain views are beautiful and make you stop and reflect on how small we are. I feel completely off the grid, like no one can find me.
Local Mexican joint Las Casuelas Terraza has become our go-to, not just for the food; it’s the atmosphere, the people-watching, the whole festive vibe. One night we wandered into Truss & Twine: amazing cocktails and small bites!
It’s not uncommon for it to be well above 100 degrees, so you just need something to put over your bathing suit. Wander into any store in town and that’s the kind of stuff they have."
