Tatcha's Latest Skincare Sale Is Giving Lucky-Girl Energy

A deep reverence for Japanese tradition has been at the heart of beloved beauty brand Tatcha since its inception in 2009. Fukubiki literally means "good fortune drawing" and is an ancient Japanese lottery game in which everybody wins. The tradition is thought to have originated in 702, when Emperor Shomu drew pieces of paper for people to win precious prizes. Fukubiki is still played in Japan today, in particular as part of natsu matsuri, i.e. the summer festivals held all around the country.
Several types of fukubiki are popular during community celebrations. Senbonbiki allows you to win an item by pulling the string to which it's attached; sankaku kuji consists of a box filled with pieces of paper that reveal what you've won; garagara is a lottery machine with a ball inside it, and the color of the ball reveals what you've won. Once you've received a fukubiki ticket (typically after making a purchase in a participating store), you bring it to a draw station to find out what you've won and claim your prize.
Tatcha has adapted the lottery concept to their own summer sale, allowing shoppers to win plenty of free gifts with their purchase. It's easy: When you spend $100, you will get to choose two free minis. When you spend $200, you will get to choose four free minis. While traditionally fukubiki prizes are randomly drawn, Tatcha's event allows you to choose your own gifts with purchase, so that you get to build your own ritual and try out new formulas. During the event, Tatcha will also be offering limited-time bundles to make your decision easier, as well as the opportunity to create your own set and unlock 15 percent off full-size items.
