What we’re all wearing to work has shifted almost as much as how people work. Hybrid office schedules, AI tools, and having several side hustles due to the cost of living are anything but traditional, so a work wardrobe needs to reflect that. Depending on your office dress code, suits and dresses may be easy to put on in a hurry, but when it comes to professional creative expression, separates are boss.

But we’re not talking about stuffy fitted button-downs and frumpy cardigans, but an elevated take on work tops. Oversized proportions, longer lines, flair like a scarf or ruffle, and interesting draping are all cool enough to wear with a go-to trouser or skirt and create so much more impact. Elevated iterations of more traditionally casual pieces, like rugby shirts or knit polos, are also fair game.

The key is always balancing an interesting top with well-fitting, simple bottoms so the attention stays there and the look isn’t too fussy during an important meeting or super busy day. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, you’ll find a boost in confidence to give you more energy during the daily grind. Here are some fresh ideas for tops to liven up your work wardrobe and get you closer to the promotion you deserve—or at least help you look the part.

This one from the Gap in seasonless chocolate brown will be a go-to for sure.

Heritage Western Denim Button Down Shirt
    $56
    SHOP NOW

Alyssa Ruffle Collar Top - Eggplant Plaid

    ASTR the Label
    Alyssa Ruffle Collar Top
    $109
    SHOP NOW

A ruffle neck and a tie neck bring a plaid into ladylike territory, but the print keeps it all pretty grounded and autumnal. It will look just as great with a midi skirt as with your favorite jeans, depending on what’s going on that day.
