When you asked five-year-old me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would have said, without hesitation, "Bikini designer." Current me isn't too far off—I am, at this point, a professional swimsuit shopper. It is a skill I have cultivated over many summers on the lakes, many ocean dips, and more online carts than I care to admit. I know what I like, I know what works, and I know what’s worth the price.

With Labor Day weekend around the corner, I'll be at my family's lake house in Wisconsin, soaking up the last of the summer sun—and I already know that more than a few of these swimsuits will be making the trip with me. For wherever your late-summer travels take you, a new swimsuit (or two) feels like a non-negotiable. Ahead, a round-up of my 36 favorite swimsuits on the market, organized into three categories: classic bikinis, high-waisted bikinis, and one-pieces.
