If you’ve spent a marginal amount of time online recently, you’ve probably heard some variation of the idea that leggings are officially out. It’s an arbitrary fashion rule that’s been championed by Gen Zers, according to publications like Business of Fashion, New York Post, and The Independent. But as a millennial, I’ve been around the block enough times to know leggings slander when I see it.

When I was in college, there were several campaigns to varying effectiveness that tried to malign leggings by declaring them “not pants,” and shaming the wearer into something like denim or khakis. However, I’ve always been a firm believer that these types of rules are intentionally reductive and designed to flatten individuality. They’re often made to convince consumers that their favorite pieces are obsolete, so they can make room for whatever is new and cutting-edge.

Over time, I’ve learned to tune out the noise and stick to the styles that actually work for me (i.e. leggings). Plus, I’m wise enough to not let anyone come between me and a comfy pair of bottoms.

So, if you’re also a leggings enthusiast, I’m here to tell you that you can—and absolutely should—wear them. Ahead, discover my go-to leggings outfits that are cozy and chic. These easy-to-style looks are beyond versatile, so they’ll effortlessly cycle through your cold-weather wardrobe.

Unlike baggy bottoms, leggings fit perfectly under knee-high boots. Not to mention, this form-fitting style occupies far less space than a pair of wide-leg pants. Follow my lead and wear your leggings with a button-down top and leopard-print boots that are guaranteed to make heads turn.

I’m currently living in the Midwest, which presents a slew of logistical weather challenges. Given the fact that I’m often cold, I rely on thermal leggings that help me to combat bone-chilling temperatures. I’d recommend double-lined, fleece-lined, or tech-fabric options if you’re also looking to stay warm in style.

Oh-So Retro

Stirrup leggings are perfect for elevating any ensemble. Yes, it’s an ‘80s-inspired look, but are you going to wait until someone says they're Heathers-coded before you decide that it’s okay to wear them? (IYKYK.) Don’t hold off on this style. Instead, get ahead of the trend and copy the formula below.

A Multipurpose Look

Despite what some might say, you can still manage to look put-together while styling leggings. Take, for example, this outfit. It’s what I usually wear while volunteering with kids—and it’s also my post-Pilates uniform.
