How to Get the Most Out of a Pro Brow Shaping

Here in the MC beauty department, we’re no strangers to getting our brows professionally shaped. Cleaning up straggly brows is one of the quickest ways to make your face look pulled together, and after more than a few overzealous at-home tweezing sessions (resulting in brow sections that never grew back all the way!), we’ve learned that sometimes it’s best to leave certain beauty rituals to the pros. And like going to a hair cut appointment, it’s best to go in prepared, so here are a few editor tips we’ve picked up along the way.

Full is the word. Even the best brow groomer can sometimes get way into the tweezing zone and go overboard, leaving you with overly skinny (though perfectly shaped) brows. The way to remedy this is to clearly state at the beginning of your appointment (and during if you sense a massacre going on) that you want him/her to keep your brows as full as possible. Say this even if you could use some shrinkage — chances are your brow person will still thin them out, but if you’re clear that you don’t want skinny brows it will keep him/her in check.

Fess up. A good brow person should ask you what skin-care products you use because certain ingredients can make your skin too sensitive for waxing. In case he/she doesn’t ask, make sure you speak up if you use OTC retinol or prescription retinoids (Retin-A, Renova, etc.), or have undergone recent glycolic peels. We’re not kidding — the wax can literally rip your skin right off. YIKES!

Minimize your appointments. Your brow guru might say you should go back every 6-8 weeks, but the truth is, unless your brows are completely out-of-contrizz-unruly, you can get away with having a professional shaping only three times a year. The rest of the time you can clean up stray hairs on your own — tweeze the new growth and use tiny grooming scissors to trim long hairs that stick out.

Conceal it. A lot of brow specialists double as makeup artists, so they’re prepared to hide the post-wax redness with a swipe of concealer. If this isn’t the case, come prepared with a creamy concealer like Laura Geller Creaseless Concealer so you don’t have to spend the rest of your day looking like you obviously waxed your brows.
