Not Your Mother's Tupperware Party
Brooke Shields hosts a Tupperware Party for Chain of Confidence, a global initiative to encourage female empowerment.
Last night, I attended a swanky Tupperware party at the Manhattan apartment of Law & Order: SUV star Stephanie March (who's married to Iron Chef Bobby Flay). Yep, that's right. A Tupperware party. But we weren't there to dish over the best new ways to store last night's leftovers. Hosted by Brooke Shields and Tupperware CEO, Rick Goings, we toasted the launch of the brand's new Chain of Confidence global initiative to encourage female empowerment. The site encourages women to share their stories and, in the process, link together and draw strength from each other.
I caught up with Stephanie March to find out how she felt about playing hostess: "With having something in your house, you're always a little bit vulnerable," she said. "So I'm a little nervous. But if you care about something enough to put your face on it, you should open your home to it." She also had a little encouragement from co-star, Ice-T, who helped convince her to have the party—he's involved with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, a Chain of Confidence partner program.
First things first: Considering Ms. March is married to a big-time chef, I found the kitchen surprisingly small. (But this is NY after all.) The apartment has a manicured industrial design aesthetic with visible pipes and support beams paired with chandeliers and mahogany. But undoubtedly, the cutest thing in the place would be the wall covered with romantic studio-posed photos of the happy couple.
The View's Sherri Shepherd made an appearance to support Shields, her costar from way back on Suddenly Susan. "It seems like women are going through so many strides but we're going backwards. The fact that other women are coming forward and helping our sisters, I love that," she said. "And I love Tupperware!"
Speaking of Tupperware, it really was the guest of honor. Wine was served in Tupperware glasses. The food was brought around on Tupperware plates. It was even used to decorate the walls. "I thought these sculptures were works of art," Shepherd said. "I was wondering what museum she got them from. My elbow bumped into it and I thought I broke it, but it was two Tupperware bowls."
As for that now-infamous head-butting controversy involving Shields—Kiefer Sutherland was recently charged with misdemeanor assault after headbutting designer Jack McCollough, allegedly in Brooke's defense, at the Met Costume gala after-party last week—she wasn't biting. But Shepherd had this to say: "I love Brooke, I really do. But what the hell are you doing at a bar at 2 in the morning with Kiefer Sutherland? It made her feel hip but it's like me and Andy Dick being out at 2 in the morning. Nothing good happens at 2 in the morning."
Heeding her warning, the event wrapped up around 9:30 p.m. And no Bobby Flay didn't make the hors d'oeurves for the party. But, hey, the food was still good.
