Women's Rights Advocates Protest Texas Abortion Bill

Texas abortion news continues! On Sunday evening, Republicans in the Texas House passed one of the nation's strictest abortion bills, which includes banning abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy. The bill, vigorously stalled by Democrats last week, would also "require doctors to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals and limit abortions to surgical centers," according to The Washington Post.

This bill has been hotly contested since its initial introduction, culminating in a protest yesterday of more than 800 women's rights advocates at the Texas Capitol in Austin. Protestors reportedly waved coat hangers — a vividly symbolic representation of illegal abortions — while speaking against the bill; if passed, 37 out of 42 Texan abortion clinics will close, clinics which "cannot afford the upgrades necessary to meet the standards of surgical centers."

The Senate will vote on the bill after it has sat for 24 hours, so MC will have a more definitive response to the result then.
