Inauguration was an exciting and highly anticipated day, and so were First Lady Michelle Obama's fashion choices. We've been on the edge of our seats speculating about what she might wear to the inauguration for months, especially since the daring red-and-black Narciso Rodriguez frock she wore on November 4.
Mrs. Obama brought her fashion-forward A-game again to the inauguration, donning a lemongrass Isabel Toledo dress and coat en route to the White House. The cut of the outfit was elegant and classy without being dowdy, and the unexpected color choice was a breath of fresh air in a sea of neutrals. And we're loving the green J. Crew leather gloves and Jimmy Choo “Glacier” pumps — they were fun and colorful without being matchy-matchy.
But it was Mrs. O’s Inaugural Ball gown that was the most-anticipated fashion choice of the evening — and she didn't disappoint in a stunning winter-white one-shoulder gown from designer Jason Wu. Not everyone loved it, but this dream dress, flecked with organza flowers and crystals, was fit for a queen, and the First Lady looked like she was born to wear it. We could have done without the one-shoulder touch, but we can't fault her for avoiding the fashion nightmare of strapless dresses.
Michelle sparkled in diamonds, in elegant diamond linear earrings and stacked diamond bangle bracelets by Loree Rodkin. "This look is absolutely her own, simultaneously modern in a way that will be emulated by women around the world today, but so timeless that it may very well one day be worn by her own daughters," commented Sally Morrison, director of the Diamond Information Center.
The First Lady was joined by two equally stylish little ladies: Malia and Sasha Obama channeled Blair Waldorf in their J.Crew ensembles, with Malia in a periwinkle coat and matching ribbon at the waist, and little Sasha in a pink coat with an orange ribbon that matched her orange scarf and gloves.
Second Lady Jill Biden was no fashion wallflower — she looked chic in a Milly New York houndstooth rollneck dress during the inauguration ceremony, spicing it up with a red Fleurette coat and tall black boots. She went with red again for the inaugural balls, in a gown by Reem Acra — definitely a bold choice, but her tiny frame kept it from looking over-the-top.
