I’ve always been a pajama girl. Maybe it started back in my Northeast boarding school days—early classes, icy mornings, and the subtle defiance of wearing flannel pajama bottoms to breakfast. Pajamas weren’t just for sleeping then; they were survival.

All these years later, and pajamas are still my second skin. The first thing I do when I walk in the door in the evening is change into a pair of pajamas, a signal that the day is quieting down. It’s my own personal expression of hygge, that Scandinavian devotion to comfort and calm, and part of why I love winter so much. There’s something quietly luxurious about lounging around the house; hair up, makeup off, a book, a laptop, or embroidery in hand on a rainy or winter-y day, cozied up in my favorite pajamas.

I don’t reserve my pajamas just for at-home wear either. I pair them with cashmere sweaters and long wool coats and wear them out of the house. In the summer and on tropical holidays, pajamas become poolside attire with bathing suit tops and flip-flops. My daughter wears hers on early summer coffee runs—proof that pajama dressing is something of a family tradition. Comfort, but make it chic.

Considering my pajama drawer is so overflowing that I now have two, I feel confident in calling myself a PJ expert at this point. Some of my favorite pajama brands include Petite Plume for its polished classics, Lake Pajamas for its whisper-soft cotton, and Sea New York for its sweet accents. In winter, I live in OnCloudNine striped pants (in the perfect shade of blue) layered with cashmere, and I layer J.Crew pajama tops under sweatshirts to give them a bit of pop for early morning coffee runs.

Pajamas, I’ve come to realize, are just part of my lifestyle—a celebration of comfort as luxury, and my own little practice of hygge wherever I happen to be.
