Ever since our dry shampoo addiction was called into question, we've been paying closer attention to our scalps. Turns out they need almost as much cleansing, moisturizing, and exfoliating as our faces do.
How do you buff away dead skin cells up there? That's where scalp scrubs come into play. They get the job done, plain and simple. But because they can be pricey—plus require a whole other step—we don't use them as much as we should. So when we learned that Dr. Francesca Fusco, dermatologist at Wexler Dermatology, had a hack for store-bought scrubs, we were all ears.
"Adding a tablespoon of sugar to a dollop of shampoo will gently exfoliate the scalp and easily dissolve and rinse out without leaving any residue on hair," explains Dr. Fusco. And not only are you removing all the gunk more efficiently, but nixing dead skin cells allows conditioners to penetrate efficiently. So you're getting a deeper clean and better moisture, all at the same time.
(To double down on treatment for dry scalp or dandruff, Dr. Fusco recommends teaming it with a nourishing and moisturizing shampoo like Dove's new DermaCare Scalp Pure Daily Care.)
And how often should you do this at-home hack? As is the case with your face, too much exfoliation can be a bad thing and throw off the balance of your hair's natural oils. Consider giving your scalp a good scrub every 3-5 washes depending on your individual scalp health.
