The Boho Movement Is Here to Stay—This Is How I'm Styling It
It's never been just a trend.

Boho chic has never been just a trend—it’s a full-fledged fashion genre. Right now, it's inspiring designers across the spectrum to rethink softness and freedom while inspiring me to loosen up my own wardrobe.
To me, understanding where boho comes from is as important as knowing where to shop it now. Before “boho chic” made a name for itself in early-2000s street style—with icons Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen paving the way—it originated from a more rebellious way of life during the 1970’s.
Just Kids by Patti Smith is a crystal-clear example of boho's roots. (Reading it motivated me to write this article.) In the midst of jaw-dropping recollections of the singer's early life and perseverance, I found myself engrossed in the wardrobes and hairstyles she described seeing while she eked out a living at the Chelsea Hotel.
Smith specifically referenced Janis Joplin, who paved the way for bohemian style in the '70s. She was a free spirit and wore incredible psychedelic pieces, defying societal norms and paving the way for raw individuality. At the same time, Karl Lagerfeld was creating a more romantic form of bohemian-wear at Chloé. His designs were more whimsical and dream-like, but they were nevertheless an important part of cementing boho aesthetics as a fashion industry staple.
Fast forward to the early aughts, and the Olsen twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley, redefined bohemian style for a new generation. They did this by mixing vintage textures and oversized silhouettes in a way that felt both effortless and aspirational.

Last year I dusted off my 2009 Marcie bag in time for Chloé to once again lead the boho charge under Chemena Kamali's creative direction. With her deeply personal, nostalgic approach to femininity, Kamali is bringing new life into the label's bohemian DNA. And as she reclaims Chloé’s roots, other brands are following suit, proving that boho chic is more than a passing trend. It’s one of fashion’s eternal muses.

Of course, brands like Zimmermann, Ulla Johnson, Dôen, Isabel Marant, and Free People have long had boho in their DNA, using vintage-like fabrics, prairie silhouettes, and a carefree spirit season after season. They remain go-to brands for timeless, wearable boho pieces at a range of price points. Right now, I think it's most exciting to see brands outside the traditional prairie-like bohemian orbit leaning into the look with a fresh perspective.
Recently, I stumbled into Sea-NY and fell in love with the below crochet cape. In my opinion, it was a perfect way for this more polished street style brand to lean further into their whimsical boho roots. The sales associate styled me in their best-selling blazer with the crochet cape over it. I was utterly impressed with the result: I could still feel polished and boho at the same time.

A few days later, I was fortunate to attend the LoveShackFancy Spring 2026 presentation and it was everyone’s Western-boho fantasy. Think floral lace, fringe, and a romantic, overall energy that felt both nostalgic and new. While LoveShackFancy is traditionally overly romantic and feminine, tapping into their bohemian roots was effortless and nothing short of beautiful.
