Trend Alert: The Leather Harness Is More Wearable Than You Think

This season, designers paid homage to our inner freak.

One of the biggest trends we've seen for fall/winter 2020? Riffs on S&M, in the form of latex looks that walked the runways at Saint Laurent (opens in new tab); PVC pieces at Balmain; and harness clad looks at Gucci, Alexander McQueen (opens in new tab), and Vera Wang—who paid homage to the inner freak in all of us. This runway look is high fashion, yes, but the question remains: Can this harness trend transition seamlessly to your everyday style? Moreover, can a harness be worn at work? The answer is yes, but it has to be done tastefully. Execution is key: Wear with clothing items and accessories that are traditionally professional (e.g. pair over a button-down (opens in new tab), wear under a blazer, or top off with a pair of pointed mules). Below, we show you how to wear a harness like a boss. No whip necessary.

1. Pair With a Dress Shirt

Take your traditional white button-down shirt from plain to wow, just by adding a corset-like harness over it. This piece is fitted and supported, giving your overall ensemble structure. Style with leggings for a softer, laidback look and a cool bag with hardware that mimics the edgy qualities of a harness. Complete with two-toned kitten heel shoes.

Shop the pieces: 1. Fleet Ilya zip corset (opens in new tab), $894; 2. Justine Clenquet earrings (opens in new tab), $75; 3. Aritzia white button down (opens in new tab), $110; 4. A.W.A.K.E. mode stirrup leggings (opens in new tab), $170; 5. Manc bag (opens in new tab), $350; 6. Givenchy heels (opens in new tab), $850

2. Add Over a Blazer

When you're feeling bold, wear your harness front and center over your blazer. Still warming up to the trend? Style it underneath your blazer over a turtleneck bodysuit. The harness will peek out from your blazer for that unexpected accessory look, but won't attract HR's full attention. Brighten up your outfit at work with pops of yellow through a bag or shoe.

Shop the pieces: 1. Matek bodysuit (opens in new tab), $100; 2. Acne blazer (opens in new tab), $750; 3. Alyx harness (opens in new tab), $635; 4. LVIR shorts (opens in new tab), $175; 5. Bottega Veneta bag (opens in new tab), $2,200; 6. Proenza Schouler mules (opens in new tab) $895

3. Wear With a Maxi Dress

For causal Fridays or off-duty attire, use a leather harness to cinch a maxi dress. The leather against the spotted design in this piece provides a nice, stark contrast. Who knew a harness was basically the edgier belt you needed in your wardrobe? Complete with sandals, a white bag, and a simple gold chain bracelet.

Shop the pieces: 1. Ann Demeulemeester harness (opens in new tab), $681; 2. Peter Petrov dress (opens in new tab), $1,665; 3. Maslo bracelet (opens in new tab), $52; 4. Brahmin bag (opens in new tab), $265; 5. Mani sandals (opens in new tab), $790

4. Style With a Matching Skirt

Match your harness with a skirt for a look that is cohesive and fashion forward. A floral top breaks up some of the neutral-tone monotony and adds a feminine vibe to the ensemble. Bring everything together with a blue bag and blue mules.

Shop the pieces: 1. Manokhi harness (opens in new tab), $389; 2. Pringle of Scotland turtleneck, (opens in new tab) $341; 3. Intermix skirt (opens in new tab) , $248; 4. ASOS ring  (opens in new tab)$27; 5. Coperni bag (opens in new tab), $667; 6. Simon Miller mules (opens in new tab), $390

5. Add to a Pantsuit

A buttoned-up pantsuit will give an edgy harness that instant professional lift. Walk into the office Monday morning in this ensemble and you'll be ready to tackle that big presentation with confidence. Stand tall in a pair of comfy mule heels and keep the jewelry simple to let the harness do the talking.

Shop the pieces: 1. ASOS harness (opens in new tab), $16; 2. Proenza Schouler blazer (opens in new tab), $495; 3. Proenza Schouler pants, (opens in new tab) $395; 4. Luv AJ hoops (opens in new tab), $45; 5. Redone t-shirt, (opens in new tab) $75; 6. Uno de 50 necklace (opens in new tab), $215; 7. By Far heels (opens in new tab), $395
