These Lightweight $75 Sneakers Will Anchor My Outfits All the Way Through to Winter

They lend credibility to even the most thrown-together look.

The Superga Cotu sneaker has been a quiet constant in my wardrobe for decades. These are the sneakers I’ve wandered through Europe in, hot as all get-out but looking chic, logging miles on sweaty cobblestone streets. They’ve seen a lot. Including, notably, my questionable decision to wear them in Paris in December—a truly freezing time of the year—paired with a dress sock, no less. (A look. A choice. One I stand by, mostly.)

I return to this shoe again and again—across colorways and across subtle platform variations (there are three)—because it solves more outfit dilemmas than it creates, which is really the highest praise I can give a shoe. Easy, classic, chic. And versatile: comfortable enough to rack up six-figure step counts without complaint, yet polished enough to hold their own with a slip skirt and a last-minute dinner plan. Not every sneaker can do both. These do.

As my spring wardrobe begins its slow, optimistic thaw, the Superga classic has re-entered heavy rotation. It’s the shoe I reach for when I want ease without sacrificing intention. I’ve been pairing them with everything from vintage-wash denim to tailored trousers, and most recently, my favorite utility pant from Citizens of Humanity. There’s something particularly satisfying about that combination, the grounded simplicity of the sneaker against the structure of the trouser, especially with the ankle-grazing flare I’m currently committed to. It’s relaxed, but not lazy.

Styling-wise, I treat them almost like a neutral punctuation mark. They soften sharper looks, streamline more casual ones, and bring a kind of effortless coherence to whatever I’m wearing. A blazer and trouser suddenly feels less formal (although I do love formal!). A denim look feels more refined. Even the most thrown-together outfit gains a bit of credibility.

Below, a few of my recent everyday looks built around my forever go-to: the Superga classic. Proof that sometimes the smartest piece in your wardrobe is also the simplest, and occasionally, the one that’s been there all along.
