For better or for worse (okay, mostly for worse), the 2016 election cycle has been dominated by Donald Trump. But there's one person who has been surprisingly silent: Trump's wife, Melania. However, in a new interview with Harper's Bazaar, she revealed that keeping out of it has been part of her plan all along.
"I'm choosing not to go political in public because that is my husband's job," she said. "I'm very political in private life, and between me and my husband I know everything that is going on. I follow from A to Z. But I chose not to be on the campaign. I made that choice. I have my own mind. I am my own person, and I think my husband likes that about me."
Instead, she's focusing on keeping their son, Barron, living a normal life in New York City. In the interview, she absolutely refused to talk about the issues, or even what life in the White House would be like. But she's by his side during debates, and advising him (and arguing with him) in private. "I give him my opinions, and sometimes he takes them in, and sometimes he does not," she said. "Do I agree with him all the time? No. I think it is good for a healthy relationship. I am not a 'yes' person. No matter who you are married to, you still need to lead your life. I don't want to change him. And he doesn't want to change me."
She shoots down any description of her as a wallflower without opinions of her own. And she loves it when Cecily Strong takes aim at her persona on Saturday Night Live. "It's kind of an honor, actually, to have someone play you like that in a fun way," she said. "We laugh a lot about that. It's funny to see how people see you."
But overall, it seems like Melania is a woman with her own opinions, and right now, her opinion is to stay out of all the drama. With all the vitriol surrounding the campaign, can you blame her?
