I'm Done Defaulting to Sweats—These 13 Genuinely Chic Pants Are Just as Easy

Because I’m more productive when I’m actually dressed.

I need to confess something: for someone who works in fashion, I spend an impressive amount of time in sweatpants. My Instagram may suggest otherwise—sequins, fringe, dramatic dresses—but the behind-the-scenes reality is me on my couch editing, writing, and taking meetings in the same cozy uniform I’ve been loyal to for years.

This year, I’m trying to quit. The nudge came from one of my favorite TikTokers, Eli Rallo, and the mildly irritating realization that my brain works better when I’m wearing an outfit with even just a hint of intention.

What better way to keep me accountable than writing an entire article outing my worst dressing habit? Consider this my official breakup announcement: in 2026, we’re done defaulting to sweats.

There’s a style reason, too. A friend once told me, "Getting dressed is the first creative decision you make in a day," and that line has stayed lodged in my head ever since. Because it’s true: when you get dressed on purpose—even for a day that technically doesn’t require it—you’re flexing your personal style muscles. Sometimes that choice gives you the exact amount of serotonin needed to kick off a killer day.

But here’s the thing, I don’t want "hard pants" (except for special occasions). I want pants that feel like sweats, but look like I made a decision. The sweet spot is soft tailoring and smart details: a forgiving waistband, a cut that skims rather than clings, fabric that drapes, and silhouettes that read polished even if the only commute on the agenda is from the bed to my laptop.

I’ve been test-driving this goal for a few weeks, and I keep coming back to the same hero pair: red track pants I bought from Anthropologie last year (now, sadly, sold out). They’re stretchy, comfortable, and—my personal north star—wrinkle-resistant. Track pants have been “back” for a while, but I finally understand the hold they have on people: they’re practical, a little sporty, and genuinely chic when you style them with contrast. Think: a crisp button-down, a slouchy sweater, a dramatic coat, or proper shoes if you’re feeling ambitious.

And because I can’t resist a statement, I’m also sprinkling in a few fun pairs—sequins, texture, interesting detailing—because sometimes the easiest way to feel put-together is to let your pants do the work.

Ahead, 13 pants I’d wear instead of sweats without sacrificing comfort.
