As a beauty editor, it's rare to get really, really excited about mascara. And I mean wax-poetic-to-anybody-that'll-listen obsessed. Don't get me wrong, I have a roster of ones I love—including Dior's new Diorshow Pump 'N' Volume formula with its cutting-edge flexible tube—but Guerlain's La Petite Robe Noire Black Lashdress has a multitasking brush that has transformed application from just another step in my regimen to a sacred ritual. It's like getting your lashes dressed.
The silicone wand, which is inspired by the silhouette of a dress, *looks* intimidating. I myself err on the side of let's-not-overcomplicate-things when it comes to brushes. But each section of the brush serves a specific purpose—the body is held horizontally to add volume, curl, and length, while the round, 360-degree head is held vertically for extra definition and getting to those hard-to-reach places, like the inner and outer corners of the lashline, from the root to tip. It's *especially* useful for the bottom lashes.
A perfect complement to the brush, the intense black formula—made with a slew of bee and vegetable waxes, as well as adherent polymers that add bend to the lashes without clumping them—goes on with ease. You can use a light hand for daytime wear, or layer it on for a serious falsies-like effect at night. It also stays put as the hours wear on, meaning no smudging, lid transfer, or undereye meltiness.
For me, it's been the ultimate have-it-in-your-bag-at-all times mascara because it's easy to apply in a rush, yields wait-are-those-real results, and washes off at the end of the night with just a normal cleanser.
Bonus: The formula is scented with the French brand's dark-and-sweet La Petite Robe Noir perfume and is housed in a beautiful glossy tube topped with a fancy lucite heart, which makes the splurge that much more satisfying.
