As a beauty blogger (and constant eyeliner wearer), I'm often asked how to keep liner from running underneath eyes, causing a big, bad smudged disaster!

The obvious answer is waterproof eyeliner, but that stuff doesn't budge no matter how many times you scrub. Since we all know not to go to sleep with our makeup on, nor do we want a big mess under the lids and worse, soiled pillowcases, liquid liner is not the clear solution.

I suggest solving this beauty blunder by swapping out pencil liners for liquid or gel formulas. Pencils tend to be creamy and too soft, prone to melting and causing dreaded raccoon eyes — not sexy.

My favorite smudge-proof eyeliner picks are: Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner, $22; CoverGirl LineExact Liquid Liner, $7; Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips Custom Eye Enhancing Gel CreamLiner, $11; Make Up Forever Aqua Liner, $23.

Worried about achieving a flawless application? The trick to applying liquid or gel liner is to use a dot technique. Pull your top lid tight and starting at the outer corners, apply several dots right on the lash line. Once you reach the inner corners, go back and draw a thin line, connecting all of the dots.
