Fashion Forward Michelle Obama

Fashion Forward Michelle Obama

What Givenchy was to Audrey Hepburn, Jason Wu is clearly becoming to Michelle Obama. For a gathering at the Royal Opera House in London this morning, the First Lady chose a dress by the 26-year-old CFDA nominee in a beautiful shade of blue, which she paired with her own pearls and kitten-heel Jimmy Choos. While Michelle has become infamous for her toned arms, she's kept them hidden (for the most part) during this official White House trip, choosing from a multitude of cardigans ranging from J.Crew to Azzedine Alaïa.

This particular morning, however — and perhaps she was inspired by the eccentric wizardry of the reading given by J.K. Rowling from her new Harry Potter book — Michelle sported a decidedly quirky patchwork cardigan from the Japanese designer Junya Watanabe to complement her retro hairdo and more-pronounced makeup. The mostly blue cardigan featured some rather fashion-forward elements, most noticeably the argyle print that was featured asymmetrically on one side. Tiny rows of shiny paillettes, meanwhile, ran up the other side and around the cuffs, which were purposefully slit ever so slightly.

If my memory serves me correctly, this is the first time Michelle has worn a non-American designer.
