Big Girl in a Skinny World: Choosing the Right Pair of Shorts

Hello, Ladies,

As those of you who follow me on Twitter (@ashley_falcon) may already know, I spent a lazy Sunday afternoon in the park this Memorial Day weekend, complete with people watching, book reading, and card playing. But did I mention I was kind of suffocating? It’s official: Summer is here, and boyfriend jeans will no longer cut it. So, as soon as I walked in the door (right after finding the nearest fan), I pulled out my computer and set out to find the best summer shorts. Some of the pairs I loved are available in-store, and others are only available online.

When it comes to buying shorts there’s lots to consider: length, color, fabric, pleats, wash, and pockets. Length can be tricky; too-short shorts are be sure to result in chub rub. And it must be said: White is extremely hard to wear on your bottom half. I’m not saying it can’t be done, but it can be extremely tricky, so approach light shorts with caution! Any shorts that are made of too-thin fabrics will ride up and also be more likely to highlight cellulite-filled areas. When it comes to pleats, keep them minimal. Keep the wash dark, and avoid too much whiskering or bleaching. Lastly, pockets can add tons of bulk, so make sure your shorts lie flat — the fewer pockets, the better!

For some great summer shorts options consider plus-size friendly shops such as Old Navy, Torrid, Macy’s, and Avenue. If you’re looking for a great pair of chinos, consider Avenue’s Cuffed Chino Shorts. They come in a variety of colors (my favorite is the coral pair). They also carry a Denim Trouser Short, perfect for dressier summer events. Old Navy’s Women's Plus Classic-Rise Twill Shorts are perfect for a day at the park, mall, or beach. For another denim option, check out the Women's Plus Dolphin-Hem Denim Shorts.

Do you have any go-to shorts? Any favorite colors or brands? Let me know!

-Ashley
