In high school, I did no small amount of cross-training. But, it wasn't until I sat down to make this list that I realized I have no idea what term actually means. At the time, it entailed a lot of running. And it turns out this was probably not far off. Cross-training, as I understand it now, includes most exercises done outside the scope of one's usual area of concentration. Since I was a pole vaulter, running forced me to exercise different muscles. I may be the only person to whom this idea was fuzzy. But, there it is...just in case.
In terms of the playlist, I've tried to enable your own cross-training exercise switch by making a couple changes. The majority of "workout music" clocks in around 130 BPM and wouldn't be out of place in a club. In order to mix things up, I've put together a list that runs 155-160 BPM and features a more aggressive set of songs than usual.
You'll still find some exuberant tunes, courtesy of Ash and Hot Hot Heat. But, I've also put in some darker material from Joy Division and H.I.M. that wouldn't normally turn up here. And, if you prefer the melodrama and joy all at once, Andrew W.K. has just the song for you.
