Even though I’ve had to begrudgingly admit that I have oily skin, I still love a good hydrating foundation. Having glowy, fresh, supermodel-like skin is always my goal when I do my makeup, and the best hydrating foundations are the easiest way to get the look—and makeup artists agree. That said, this formula is more function than fun, especially for people who have dry or mature skin.

“Hydrating foundations typically feature a healthy number of skincare ingredients that allow them to leave behind fresh, dewy skin,” celebrity makeup artist Theo Turner tells me. “They are perfect for dry or dehydrated skin types that want a naturally radiant and plump-looking complexion.”

While my skin is oily, it is also extremely dehydrated, which is why I’ve found this category of foundations to be among the most reached-for formulas in my rather large makeup collection. That’s why I’ve made it my mission to find only the best formulas on the market for anyone who prefers skin that looks like their own but elevated. Think: Paloma Elsesser, Hailey Bieber, or Lupita Nyong'o and the way their skin glimmers at any given moment. Or even the way you look after a fun trip to the Caribbean. That’s the level of flawless we’re referring to here.

Ahead is a culmination of my favorites (application videos included), plus additional commentary from Turner on how to flawlessly incorporate these formulas into your standing beauty routine. My mission to keep the dewy-skin agenda alive starts now.

MAC has been one of my go-to brands since I was a teenager, but it was only within the last few years, when I stopped wearing such full-coverage makeup, that I found the icon that is its Face and Body foundation. It’s been my favorite hydrating foundation for years now.

    Coverage: Sheer

    Finish: Radiant

    Shades: 24

What I Love: Sheer coverage that looks extremely natural; Easy to use as a base-thinner for more full-coverage foundations without sacrificing pigment level; Water-resistant

What I Don’t: Will not cover acne marks or any dark marks

Review for MC: “I’m the biggest fan of this foundation because of how lightweight it is. It’s perfect for everyday use to give your skin a shot of radiance and the slightest hint of coverage without it looking like you have a mask of makeup on your face. Plus, the undertones are easy to understand due to the brand’s naming system, with C standing for cool, N for neutral, and W for warm.” — Ariel Baker, Beauty Writer

Never in my life would I have ever thought that I would fall in love with an almost $300 foundation, but Clé de Peau Beauté has made a fan out of me. Aptly named “The Foundation,” this formula is lightweight and feels more akin to a moisturizer than a makeup product, and the radiance it leaves behind? Chef’s kiss.

    Coverage: Light and buildable

    Finish: Radiant

    Shades: 15

What I Love: Luxury experience from start to finish; The gorgeous glass bottle has its own stand on which it is presented, and also comes with a spatula to apply the product

What I Don’t: Abysmal shade range—I wear the darkest color in the entire line, and I am nowhere near the deepest Fitzpatrick shade

Review for MC: “I am unfortunately in love with a $285 foundation, and once you give this a go, you might be too. This is a fantastic luxury foundation for anyone who wants a “barely-there” feel to their foundation but who also prefers a bit of coverage. I’d describe the coverage level as light instead of sheer, as the brand does, and this formula is also extremely buildable without feeling heavy or looking cakey on the skin. There’s an abundance of ingredients like glycerin and cetyl ethylhexanoate in the formula, which not only make the application experience a dream but also quietly condition your skin when you’re wearing the foundation. I don’t make luxury recommendations lightly, but if you can, you must try this foundation.” — Ariel Baker, Beauty Writer.

Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation Hydration and Longwear - Bd01

Chanel makeup has been having a moment recently, and I’d be remiss not to highlight its complexion products, particularly the Healthy Glow Foundation. The formula is almost half water, and you can tell when applying the product to the skin. It’s easy to blend, even easier to build, and feels good throughout the lifecycle of your makeup, something that can’t be said for other foundations on the market.

    Coverage: Light to medium

    Finish: Liquid

    Shades: Radiant

What I Love: Small bottle that is chic but still easy to travel with; Glass bottle allows you to easily see the color of the foundation inside

What I Don’t: Slight fragrance, so people with sensitive skin should be careful

Review for MC: “Chanel has slowly been climbing its way to becoming one of my favorite makeup brands, and its complexion offerings are largely a part of the reason why. The Healthy Glow Foundation is one of the brand’s complexion products that offers a bit more coverage without the pitfalls of traditional high-coverage foundations. Instead, it still feels easy to blend and is almost serum-like, without compromising the coverage I want when I’m looking for a bit more. It’s always going to be in my arsenal, and it’s one of those rare formulas that I think pretty much anyone will love." — Ariel Baker, Beauty Writer

You likely already know and love this formula, and it’s iconic for a reason. Although it was recently reformulated (more on that here), Armani’s Luminous Silk Foundation is still one of the best hydrating formulas on the market. In fact, I prefer this version to the previous one because it feels more true to skin, which is exactly what the brand was going for. "The driving inspiration was to meet today's demand for foundations that offer an even more seamless, true-to-skin match and act as an extension of one's skincare routine, not just makeup,” Rena Hayashi at Armani Beauty R&D previously told Marie Claire. I have to say, they knocked it out of the park.

    Coverage: Medium

    Finish: Natural

    Shades: 44

What I Love: Glowy finish; Longwear formula

What I Don’t: Shade range can be a little confusing to follow

Review for MC: “I absolutely love this foundation. I was a bit hesitant about the reformulation, but not only does this version glide onto the skin like butter, but it also doesn’t feel overly heavy throughout the day, especially if you use a light powder set. Additionally, the color match is perfect; 8.6 is practically my skin in a bottle, undertones and all. Honestly, I have no complaints about this foundation at all. The packaging is as luxurious as you’d expect from Armani, and most importantly, there’s a pump for easy dispensation of the product.” — Ariel Baker, Beauty Writer

This foundation is new to the market, but I am so impressed that it simply had to make this list. The serum-like consistency makes it an absolute pleasure to wear, and this foundation is the first time that I’ve seen neutral undertones be the basis for the entire shade range. Plus, it’s created by celebrity makeup artist Hung Vanngo, a master at his craft.

    Coverage: Medium to full

    Finish: Natural radiant

    Shades: 38

What I Love: People with neutral undertones are likely to find a great shade match; Serum consistency

What I Don’t: The packaging feels a little less luxurious than I’d like for an almost $50 foundation.

Review for MC: “It’s hard for me to find perfect foundation matches as someone who has a neutral, golden-leaning undertone, but this foundation launch has me feeling hopeful that I’ll be seeing more of this in the beauty industry. In the meantime, Hung Vanngo is leading the charge with an impressive 38-shade line, and the color 24 has become a fast favorite. In short, this feels like a unicorn foundation that I think will become one of those staple beauty products for years to come.” — Ariel Baker, Beauty Writer

It’s the foundation drops heard around the world, and I am here to echo everyone else’s sentiment on this product: It’s incredible. Is the $110 price tag steep? Yes. Does this foundation look like glass skin in a bottle? Also yes. I have been in love with this Victoria Beckham Beauty foundation since it launched because it’s a true makeup-skincare hybrid that I seriously can’t get enough of.

    Coverage: Light to Medium

    Finish: Dewy

    Shades: 19

What I Love: Flexible shades; Stunning, glassy finish on the skin

What I Don’t: Some find the packaging to be leaky

Customer Review: “I didn’t want to love them, but here we are, a serial user and nothing else compares! I love how it feels on the skin; it’s buildable, and you feel so hydrated and natural.” — Victoria Beckham Beauty

What Should I Look For in a Hydrating Foundation?

The best makeup for your personal needs can only be decided by, well, you. However, there are a few things that you can keep in mind if this is your first foray into the world of hydrating foundations.

“The main thing I look for in a hydrating formula is texture and coverage preference,” Turner says. “Think about whether you want a cream, serum, or liquid foundation, then narrow your list down by the amount of coverage that you want.” Additionally, Turner checks the ingredient lists for a few key inclusions. “Does the foundation have hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, which help to bind the product to the skin?” he says. “Ingredients like those also help to keep the product moisturizing and, from a sensorial standpoint, feeling good on the skin throughout the day.”

Can I Use a Hydrating Foundation If I Have Oily Skin?

In short, yes, people with oily skin can absolutely use hydrating foundation formulas. However, the way you prep your skin is really important. “I would use a silicone-based primer in the areas that tend to get oily and let it set before applying the foundation,” Turner says. His biggest tip for people with oily skin? “Don't forget to use a powder to set your face.”
