I Finally Found the Best Sunscreens for Oily Skin to Ward Off Extra Shine
Bye-bye, grease and sun damage.
As a beauty editor, there’s a cardinal rule that is drilled into our brains from day one: wear sunscreen every single day. I’ve tried my fair share of SPF formulas—powder, gel, makeup-infused, the works—but as someone with acne-prone skin, sometimes, even the most raved-about product can break me out. So I’ve developed a few key rules for how I shop for SPF, and the best sunscreens for oily skin must meet those criteria.
“For oily skin, I always recommend looking for a lightweight sunscreen that won’t leave behind a heavy, greasy film,” celebrity esthetician Melissa Fox tells me. “The best formulas are non-comedogenic, oil-free when possible, and designed to absorb quickly into the skin.” She also loves sunscreens that offer a soft matte or natural finish, as they help control shine throughout the day without feeling drying on the skin.
Sunscreen truly is a nonnegotiable in my routine—as it should be in everyone's—so I’ve made it a point to research the best formulas for oily, acne-prone skin like mine, and I have to say, I think I’ve created a fabulous master list. Ahead, find the best sunscreens for oily skin that will keep your overproduction of sebum at bay, while still giving you all the protection you need from the sun.
This is one of my favorite sunscreens because it’s specifically made for oily, blemish-prone skin. It has niacinamide and zinc, two ingredients that will help to brighten and protect your skin over time. It’s also a fantastic formula to wear under makeup.
Sofie Pavitt is the queen of acneic skin, so I was elated to try the brand’s recent sunscreen launch, Screentime. Niacinamide, vitamin E, and ectoin, which help to brighten, hydrate, and nourish the skin without clogging pores.
Shiseido is one of my favorite sunscreen brands of all time, and the Urban Environment Oil-Control Sunscreen needs to be in every oily person’s skincare cabinet. Zinc oxide is one of the active ingredients that helps mattify the skin, but it’s combined with others like glycerin and hyaluronic acid to keep the formula and application process seamless and elegant.
Not only does this sunscreen completely mattify the skin, but it also works perfectly as a primer for a lightweight makeup day. It’s become one of my go-to vacation sunscreens for this exact reason.
This matte sunscreen has a mineral formula, which would normally scare me off for fear of a white cast, but this version comes in four shades, and the Sunset shade is fantastic for deeper skin tones. As a plus, it also does a great job of blurring pores, making it a fantastic primer under makeup.
Not only is this sunscreen co-created with dermatologists and perfect for acne-prone skin, but it also helps to regulate oil production throughout the day. It’s also the perfect size to travel with, so you can easily pack it in your carry-on for any summer vacations you may have coming up.
A mattifying finish, water-light texture, and a sun protection factor of 50? Neutrogena’s Clear Face Sunscreen Lotion has all of this and is completely oil-free, making it perfect for people with greasy skin. Did I also mention that it’s less than $20?
Cetaphil will always be one of my favorite drugstore brands, and the Dermacontrol Oil Absorbing Face Moisturizer Sunscreen is one of the main reasons why. The brand uses micropearl technology that leaves skin with a matte finish thanks to its oil-absorbing properties, while simultaneously keeping your skin hydrated with ingredients like ceramides, glycerin, and panthenol.
Clinique is one of the original brands with a matte moisturizer for oily skin, so, of course, the brand has also perfected its sunscreen formula for oily skin. Not only does the UV Solutions Mattifying Sunscreen keep your oils at bay, but it also contains salicylic acid as an active ingredient, which treats acne simultaneously. That’s a win-win if you ask me.
While this Dr. Jart formula leaves a white cast on my deeper skin tone, I use makeup to cover it without compromising sun protection. Still, this formula mattifies the skin via ingredients like silica, zinc oxide, and titanium dioxide, which absorb oil and create a physical barrier.
