How to Wear Denim This Fall—6 Outfit Ideas to Copy

Street style makes the case for wearing your jeans in a few less predictable ways this season.

There is nothing quite like denim. Boasting an infinite number of silhouettes, sizes, hues, and the like, the sky is truly the limit when it comes to your jeans.

And while denim is always in style, the arrival of fall brings a strong desire to infuse some new life into my go-to looks. At the end of a season, I find myself leaning into uniform dressing with a plug-and-play code that, while effortless and elevated, overlooks the versatility of the heavy cotton wardrobe essential that made me fall in love with it in the first place.

This season, draw inspiration from the street-style looks below. Add varied textures and tones to your Canadian tuxedo, pair sporty elements with tailored details, and make this the year you get just as much wear out of your white jeans in winter as you did in summer.

Below, find the six looks I’m incorporating into my denim outfit arsenal — this season and beyond.

The Athletic Prep

The word “athleisure” often conjures images of leggings, sweats, windbreakers, and the like, but this season, consider going the preppy route. Having worn a uniform at school from Kindergarten through Senior Year, I find myself gravitating towards slouchier jeans that are paired with more tailored athletic staples, like polo shirts, crewneck sweatshirts, and low-profile sporty kicks.

Effortlessly Cozy

I tend to gravitate towards a slim, ankle-crop jean on the regular, but paired with more seasonless basics. Consider, instead, mixing in cozy items like a cashmere turtleneck, suede booties, and a wool blazer to effortlessly transition your favorite summer jeans to a winter essential.

The New Canadian Tuxedo

Canadian tuxedos are a timeless classic, worn for generations and loved by all. But this fall, consider mixing in additional layers to add some texture and tone to the head-to-toe denim outfit, like a slim turtleneck or casual jacket thrown over the top.

Perennial Whites

You don’t have to relegate your white jeans to the back of the closet, come Labor Day. Instead, mix them into your regular cold-weather rotation with pride. I love styling my more wide-leg white jeans with chunky knits as the temperature begins to drop, mixing in tailored accessories like a structured bag and kitten heel pumps.

Contemporary Coco

If Coco Chanel were still alive today, I think she would have loved this new interpretation of her timeless classics. This season, grab a pair of high-waisted, straight leg jeans and pair them with styling pieces that would make Ms. Gabrielle herself proud, like a tweed jacket, ballet flats, and colorful flap bag.

The Elegant Tomboy

If you’re in the mood for a denim skirt, but still want to keep it looking sporty chic, play with contrasting accessories and styling items. Try a Chanel-inspired jacket with classic flap bag, but add flat skimmers, cool-girl sunglasses, and even a pair of over-ear headphones.
