If you, like me, live somewhere that’s been literally below freezing for the past few weeks, you know: it is hard to get dressed up and still feel cute when it’s cold. I’ve worn my most practical footwear into the ground, and I’m already sick of my warmest coat—which is bad news, considering winter won’t end for another several weeks.

I rely on fun tights to inject a much-needed jolt of energy into my wardrobe when we hit this time of the season, especially on date night. They extend the shelf life of my shorts and mini dresses, add visual interest to my go-to outfit formulas, and generally just make me a little bit happier when I get dressed. (Who doesn’t need a serotonin boost right now?)

And my secret if it gets really cold? Layering a fun pair of tights over an opaque pair in a cozy cashmere knit. You still get the effect, and I promise, it’s warmer than pants.

Keep scrolling to see three Valentine’s Day outfits I’m toying with wearing this year, and the tights that anchor each look. Here’s how to keep the festive spirit alive without getting frostbite.

When your legs are the only things peeking out from under your biggest coat, it’s nice to flash a fun surprise via hosiery: a hint of sparkle, a racy line of crystals running up the back of your calves, or a rose growing up your shin.

Color Drench

Going all-in on one color has been a go-to styling trick in fashion for a few seasons now. It also makes finding the right shade of tights a breeze, and depending on how you style it, it can be subtle or statement-making.

Printed Tights

Personally, a printed tight (especially leopard!) is a winter staple because it can make even my most basic outfit better. Feeling romantic? Go for the vines of flowers or take things literally with a heart motif.
