Chic Office Dress Code

Real women share their secrets to creating personalized wardrobes that work overtime.

Natalie Joos
Director, Natalie Joos Casting

What I do: I am the liaison between fashion clients and model agents. I communicate with them daily, checking model options and relaying them to clients for their runway shows, advertising campaigns, or editorial shoots. I also write a blog about one of my passions — vintage clothing — at talesofendearment.blogspot.com.

What I wear: For meetings and show castings, I always dress up in heels. No one expects this from a casting agent since we're behind the scenes, but I know it's appreciated.

All clothing and accessories Joos' own.

Every woman should have: A gray men's crewneck sweater from J.Crew. It travels with me to snowy — and sunny — destinations. It mixes well with any outfit, day or night.

Three rules to dress by: 1) Don't match — mix prints and colors. 2) Don't wear skirts too short — if you're unsure, wear them with flats. 3) Don't try too hard — or at least look like you didn't.

Style Note: "Wear a pair of socks with strappy sandals to make a color statement, but never match them to your shoes."

Skirt price upon request, Matthew Williamson. Shoes $940, Giambattista Valli. All other clothing and accessories Joos' own.

Isa Tapia
Director of Accessories, Ann Taylor

What I do: I head the accessories team at Ann Taylor. We work on everything from jewelry and bags to shoes, belts, and scarves. It involves a lot of sketching and even more traveling for inspiration.

What I wear: My look varies with my mood, but I always fall back on a feminine dress with a jacket and killer heels.

Necklace $58, ring $48, bag $298, Ann Taylor. All other clothing and accessories Tapia's own.

Every woman should have: An Alexander Wang leather jacket. I wear mine with literally everything.

Three rules to dress by: 1) It's always better to be overdressed than underdressed. 2) Don't take yourself, or your outfits, too seriously. Walk your dog in a gown, or go to a gallery opening in pajamas — just wear something fabulous, like a great necklace or fur gilet, with them. 3) Don't overdo it. Never wear designer or fast-fashion head-to-toe or aim to be perfectly polished.

Style Note: "Balance is key. If you're wearing jeans, wear statement jewelry. If you're in a cocktail dress, go with minimal makeup and messy hair."

Skirt $1,195, Michael Kors. All other clothing and accessories Tapia's own.
