How-To Beauty: Hollywood Looks, part 4 Video
Easy-to-use, keep-forever makeup tips from celebrity makeup artist Justin Henry
As an African American woman, do you find that it's a difficult problem with your skin trying to get foundation and a good coverage?
Definitely. I mean, it's why I don't wear it a lot--
because it's hard to find it.
Exactly. Now, you-- I've never met you before but as you see, I've just pulled out a foundation and just started blending it straight onto your skin. François Nars, whose makeup I find that most people are familiar with, and Naomi Campbell has been using this color Jamaica for many, many years and I think on you, what it's gonna do is just even out your skin tone, perhaps lighten up underneath the dark area underneath your eye, and just blend your whole tone of foundation into a natural skin look that'll just really give you a radiance. You won't feel like you have a lot of eye makeup on, but you will definitely notice is that your skin complexion is far more even. And the great thing about liquid foundation like this, as opposed to cream or powder, is it's moisturizing. Do you find your skin can get dry?
I have really sensitive skin--
Oh, okay. Well, this is a pretty good product in a sense that it's not chemically heavily made up and also, you can paint it on really lightly. If you wanted to, you could actually add moisturizer to a dab of your foundation and just use it as a tinted moisturize, and it's really quick and simple: light dabs like that blending it out and just evening your foundation out. Well, I think a great look for you would be a strong, lip color, [unknown], and what I'm gonna use is something that is in the earth tone, sort of brown brick/plum tone. It's great for summer because it's a full lip look. With modern day technology now-- I'm using actually Giorgio Armani. They make a great line of lipsticks. People like Renee Zellweger, and Salma Hayek, and people like that they like a full lip but don't want that clumpy, thick feel of a lipstick. This is a great new formulation and there's so many colors that actually, for your complexion and for most people's complexion, people like Giorgio Armani and, say, Revlon, they have a great color range in raisins, and plums, and rich earth tone colors, and a lot of girls like that. Do you feel that with lipstick, you feel confident enough to wear a rich color?
Definitely. My mom's beautiful and she always does, so I've been trying to do it more.
And it's actually part of an African culture to wear dark lip, isn't it?
I think in-- in our world, we find lipstick to be something more of an evening, going out thing. But actually, if you wear something like this, you can totally wear it in the morning and just keep your face fresh and natural, and just have a strong lip look. So, [unknown], I'm gonna just-- as your lip is so strong, I'm just gonna start off with a really earthy, shimmery Dior eye shadow; one of my favorite companies in a sense that they have a really varied pigmentation in the color range for eye shadow, lipsticks, and blush. But what's great about this for you, it is because your lip is a strong lip look and it's a full color. I'm just gonna pop your eye with a really simple wash of an iridescent, sort of rusty earth tone. I think that's something that you can relate to. You like earthy colors?
I love earthy colors.
Yeah, me too and I think on your complexion, and in general, complexions in your range, sort of tropically rich and warm, look great with warm tones and you can warm tones, but in light washes. So, it doesn't have to be a big brown eye and now, with modern technology in makeup, you get color but you also get sheerness so you feel like it's still you.
